Does this mean Nigeria wasn't in existence then or that the British own Nigeria? The Binis were the first to set up centralized Government as( a vasal state) in Eko but the place was already inhabited by the Aworis. The Aworis are not Yorubas. |

No matter how you tell SOME, they seem not to understand we have 3 "major" ethnic groups, that major is understood as "only" which makes me tired of explaining to those that even went to school..... These days, I silence them by asking if a man from Cross-river state is an Igbo man too, they look dumb with that question? Or can 2face be said to be a Hausa guy since he is from Benue? These questions end their yeye talk. See how dumb you sound. The opposite of Cross River state is not Igbo. For your information, there are Igbos in cross river state. |
Politics › Re: Ikwerres Went Against Igbo Colonisation In Elechi Amadi's Autobiography by PFRB: 9:52am On May 06, 2017 |
HopeAtHand: You've written very well.
As an Ikwerre, i have to add that ancestry is the primary distinguishing factor between the Ikwerres and the Igbos. Our forebears have passed down our oral history, the story of our origins and it is exactly what we pass down to our kids.
While Igbos claimed to have migrated from Isreal, and settled in Nri, the Ikwerres have the story of Akalaka and his sojourn away from Benin to our present location. Igbos in their usual nature will not accept the Ikwerre history, but we dont care, as we are not minutely bothered by how they feel.
There are germans who after WWII, travelled to Brazil, settled there and became assimilated into Brazilian culture and language. After 70yrs, if you see their children and grandchildren, you'll refer to them as descendants of the portuguese but if they told you they are germans by ancestry, you'd have a hard time believing it.
Obviously, Iwhnrohna settled with his young family in an area where he was greatly influenced by Igbos, as visible in words and some aspects of culture. But No matter the level of assimilation, our ancestry is the reason we set ourselves aside and chose to be recognised as Ikwerres. It is something we have pursued and achieved.
Again, we do not care if Igbos aren't comfortable with our history, they can do absolutely nothing about it. He settled in Igbo land. Say the truth and shame the devil. |

My comment: Anybody who declares Biafra is an authentic enemy of the Igbos. He would have sent them and I mean millions of them to their death. Declare Biafra on which structure and on which coercion or consensus? Declare Biafra( Which is a wrong phrase in the first place) and send our igbo brothers to an eternal civil war. Civil war with who? ? ? ? ? |

momonny: king jaja was the only ibo man in that entourage. There were 4 chiefs that went with him . These were, Ubani, Obomanu, Uranta and Ogolo. Some historians add Minimah but minimah was not a chief then. Maduka remained in Bonny. |
Politics › Re: Opobo And Bonny Are Parts Of Igboland. by PFRB: 11:29am On Apr 29, 2017 |
amInigerian: Please provide credible sources when you put stuff here. I put credible sources here. It is a fact that Opobos broke away from Bonny led by Jaja, who was given land by the neighbouring Andoni leader, with which to establish his kingdom of Opobo
Jaja was himself an Igbo slave bought into Bonny and who was given his freedom according to the Bonny customs which included ceremonies which involved public head shaving.
Bonny grace made him a free man and he (and all the other Igbos the Bonny kingdom declared free) became Bonny people.
Naturally, because of the embrace of their new found identity, culture and value system, Jaja and his followers preferred the new identity conferred on them by the Ijaws as Ijaws. In line with the practices in Bonny, Okrika etc, they (Jaja and his followers) established a monarchy (not an indiche or any other igbo hierarchical system).
They speak the native language of Ibani and Ibo in Opobo too.
The point I am trying to make is that Opobos cannot deny their connection to the Igbo ethnic group (they are not even trying to) because when you are influenced by this part of the country, you have an appreciation for history characteristic of the Ibanis (Bonny people), Okrika, Kalabari, Nembe and Ijaw people in general who keep written historic records. They learnt to read and write in English very very early.
That being said, they (Opobos) don't appreciate other people trying to declare for them who they are. They know it is their own prerogative.
You did not get sold to Bonny chiefs and kings and stand the chance to go into the ships to the point of no return with them.
You did not get sold to slave dealers and get displayed like a commodity by fellow igbos in the Arochukwu slave markets before being carried to the Ijaw regions of the south to be sold to the Ijaws.
You did not after being granted your freedom by the Bonny kindgom, grow your way into relevance by serving a chief and then going out on your own. You did not get denied the chance of being a chief of a major house of Bonny because you were reminded of your slave origins.
You did not therefore have to fight a war with the Bonny people to establish your rights to traditional leadership in Bonny.
You did not suffer the bitterness of defeat in war as Jaja did, before he was given the expanse of land he was given by the Andoni leader, with which to form his own kingdom and dynasty.
These Opobos, many but not all of whom can trace their origins all the way back to being sold as items in a slave market, do not appreciate other south easterners who do not know what it is to go through what they went through as a people to feel that they are in any position to mindlessly declare an identity over them. They would not consider this fraud, but just a crudish engagement of history and an unrefined approach to inter-ethnic relationships.
They would not consider this fraud , however, the Igbo man who is perpetually fraudulent by nature attempted to claim that the kingdom that gave them (Opobos) their freedom by exempting them from the white man's ships, taught them new ways, allowed them to accumulate wealth if they wished through engaging in the same trade the indegenes were engaging in, taught them societal structure and organisational power, taught them to read and write, (these people with whom they lived and died) the Igbo man has attempted to say that that these pple, this kingdom of Bonny was actually Igbo.
When they look at you as stupid people how will you blame them? If they don't want to be assocaited with you because of your behaviour, who will blame them? In what culture is this behaviour by the Igbos not a disgrace?
