Thanks for that, bruddah!!

Yes, we get that money and ain't no one stopping us!!

You see, Ijebu's are very rich is all I hear all the time, hence why I'm trying to be an empire bigger than the British empire. Tryna make riches the tag of the Ijebu's on a global scale. cool

Best of luck on your journey to set history. I'm also on similar mission

One good thing about Ijebu is that history has shown that Ijebu people are relevant on global scale.

We've had the likes of Awolowo, Tai Solarin, Okunnowo etc. the list is endless in the past

In the present we have people like Wale Adenuga, Folorunsho Alakija, Otunba Subomi Balogun, Otedola, Prof Wole Soyinka etc this list is also endless

As a matter of fact, the Ijebus own what is now known as lagos. I also need to point out that the worldwide known Eyo festival originated from Ijebu

shymexx: Darn!! I wish someone can just write everything in this oriki down and break-down the complex Yoruba they used.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egMSkD_yAmk

@Shymexx U have given me a serious work to do.............By hearing this made my head swollen, I just have to translate part of it to the best of my ability for people that don't understand to see. I could only do translation for the first 1 min 30 secs now. I will get back to it later.

Ijebu Oriki from the youtube video

the opening song: We are going out to celebrate with the celebrant, we are going out to celebrate with the celebrant, good celebration.

The Oriki proper

Let's all go to Ijebu
Let's great them gently, let's great them well
Obanta's children how is the weather?
Ijebu the children of Alare (nickname derived from how we greet ourselves), children of Alagemo (Ijebu's deity) that bless abundantly
Ijebu has stepped beyond just a community, it has become a big region
They have expanded beyond boundary amassing wealth from both inside and outside
Children of Abulesowo (literally mean one's that makes money from cutting land)
Ijebu children are kind and generous
Ijebu ode is Ijebu
Ijebu igbo is Ijebu
Ijebu Iperu, Ishara, Sagamu all belong to Ijebu
Ikorodu at the edge of lagos, Ibefun is there that accept people
Ewesooooooooooooooooooooo (form of greeting)
I great you Ijebu children
Children of Abulesowo, Children of Alare take it gently
The Children of 16 Alagemos
The rich people of shillings (old money of pre-colonial era)
The small Ijebu is money
The big ijebu is money
Ijebu male is money
Ijebu female is money
You are the children of knowledge that intelligently and calmly engage in battle
Ijebu the children of Alare, the children of Awujale (the king)
The Children of Obanta (literally the king is outside)
The children of blessing dieties I greet U
The child that see big container to carry money
The child that spray money like spraying water
Ijebu the children that use unity to quench enemity
The one that use unity to quench enemity when talking about Ijebu where the children of the enemies start shivering
The children of blessing dieties, the owner of this house I greet you
The child that use wisdom to cover his head
The children of ijebu are good people.......

sambroose: Stupid thing, no security nothing nothing, my cousin was nearly killed in that ceremony last year .....ijebu people are ritualists, yes I said that.

Maybe your cousin was mingling in the lowest class where there were cult boys. Surely U can't take away the presence of thugs in a citywide festival. But to say there is no security is a codswallop.........U have never been there, and U shouldn't make such irrational conclusion.

Idowuogbo:

OAM4J
Ojude Oba literately means the kings's front-yard. It is an annual event when the citizens and well wishers of Ijebuland pay homage to their king (The Awujale of Ijebuland). It was fixed on the 3rd of ileya because then many citizens (Muslims and Non Muslims) often travel home for the Ileya festivals...even though the event has become very popular and big that many now go home for Ileya because they don't want to miss Ojude Oba.

Before now the event usually takes place in front of the King's palace and we used to have many titled chiefs on horses giving lots of entertainment to spectators. I remember growing up, we don't want to miss the horse entertainment of the likes Chief Kuku, Chief Kuye, The Baloguns and The Alatishes. Many of these notable chiefs are dead now.

Years after, the Awujale asked many of the Ijebus to form various social associations with approval from the Awujale's palace..of course with regular 'isakole' (royalty) paid annually ( The king must chop na). That took Ojude Oba to a new level. We have thousands of like-minds associations in Ijebu today... of course each association get level o... depending on your class in the society. So yearly each recognized association come to Ojude Oba to pay homage to the king with their Musics and dances.

That is not all. The main thing is the parties after the Ojude Oba entertainments. Each Association has their party place where they eat and drink to their fill with their friends and families. Some of them engage live bands to play for them while they dance and party, others make use of DJs and party till dawn.

The fun on this day is unlimited with unlimited food, drinks, music, money, girls for boys and Aristos and boys for madams and Sugar Mummies.

Rightly said. Ojude oba is an annual festival celebrated by the indigenes of Ijebu and their friends. Though this is celebrated 3 days after Ileya festival, it is not a religious festivity as anyone is welcomed irrespective of their religion. Muslim, Christian, Traditionalist or Atheist. It is an avenue for the sons and daughters of Ijebu to pay homage to their paramount ruler the Awujale of ijebuland. People from all works and everywhere in the world come for this festival. If U are the type that is materialistic don't be surprised to be intimidated by the wealth of some people. The horse ride kicks off the day with chiefs of some royal and prestigious houses (families) representing their people. Thereafter different associations mostly in the same uniform (Aso Ebi) come to pay homage to the king. I must tell you this is a sight to behold. There are different levels in the associations and the top associations have high calibre people as members; and U have to be someone of substance to become a member. One association I remember vividly well is Egbe Bobakeye (Literally meaning "Rejoice with the king" association) one which KWAM 1 is a member. After this, then there is celebration galore all day till the dawn.

rudedough: Seriously dude, I am igbo too and to be sincere, Fashola is doing well as a Governor. If we see the truth let's say it and stop being tribalistic about everything. "The Yorubas killed our forefathers" "The Igbos are ingrate and should be deported to their dry land" and all those tribal slurs you guys spew on Nairaland, it disappoints me because I never knew how tribalistic our people are until I started reading News from Nairaland. Those wars were fought by our uncivilised grand parents who couldn't settle their dispute without shedding blood. Now we have Internet, computers, cell phones, we are more connected to each other and we know better.

Growing up in Lagos, I have never met anyone who has lured tribal slurs at me, I used to think that Lagos was a home to all (And I still feel that way) until I travelled out of the country and in my search for Nigerian news I found Nairaland. To be frank, anytime I see those tribal slurs, one thing comes to my mind, that those tribalistic bigots are between the ages of 40 - near death. They're still hurting from their losses in the war. We do appreciate that you had to fight for a "just" cause but please attend to your problems and stop involving we the youth in your predicament, we have our own problems and this is not the 80s anymore.

Thanks

Signed: A concerned youth

Thanks for this comment..................If we don't see the strength and advantage in our diversity, and work together to eliminate tribalism, nepotism, ignorance and hatred for others, I don't see Nigeria going forward.

In a country where a man's or woman's success is calibrated by the amount of cash he/she can amass, then morality of protecting one's dignity is not a 1st consideration for many.

Corruption is Naija number 1 enemy
