RichDaniels:

The pastor is wrong. Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple Inc is the richest and highest paid person in the world. In 2023, Tim Cook received a salary of over 200 million dollars and has a combined net worth of 1.4 billion dollars. Tim Cook is not a shareholder to any company nor does he own any business to his name. All his wealth has been made from salaries. The same goes for Sundar Pichai (1.2 billion, CEO of Google) and Safari Catz (1 billion) CEO of Oracle.

The bolded is a lie. Tim Cook owns over 3 million Apple shares. As a matter of fact, his net worth is determined by the number of shares he owned not his salary. Same with Sundar Pichai with shares in Alphabet. All the CEOs of the fortune 500 companies regularly receive stock options in addition to their salaries. If you own shares you're a businessman.

This is no competition. We are just sharing knowledge. Let me give you a good example of top level employee getting surprised. Andy Jessy is the CEO of Amazon (One of the biggest companies in the world). In 2022, his total compensation package plunged to $1.3 million annually from $212 million in 2021. That's a whooping 99% drop. Imagine Andy blowing through $212 million in 2021 (don't tell it's impossible to blow through $200 m in a year. You might want to check the price of super yacht first) only to be stung with a 99% salary drop the following year. An employee will always be at the mercy of the employer.

If to employ 200 people maybe as an hotelier with like 4 hotels you have to or you are using huge bank facilities then you are working for other people as well because you are paying back interest. In the system we have currently a man with no money at all can end up employing 1 million people if he understands the laws of money as you said but he will be putting himself as well as others at risk.

You hit the nail on its head. We all literally work for the system and that system is Capitalism. What differentiate a business-oriented individual from others in the system is his or her propensity to take risks.

He has to define what is "rich" here. Those working at NLNG are rich. The owner of Ebeano Supermarket is rich too.

What does he mean by "rich"?

True talk. Being rich is relative. Where some rich men money finish is where some others start.

Do you know any human being who is using his or her own money alone to employ 200 people permanently?. Let me know the individual.

Of course none. Wealthy people leverage on others money and time to make more money for themselves. It's part of understanding the laws of money.

Yeah right. Someone who earns $15 million a year will become broke if they get fired. grin
There are rich salary earners. Full stop. Anyone can become broke if they mismanage wealth. That is not what this thread is about. It's about whether someone can become rich from a salary. The answer is yes. Any other thing is long talk.

https://fadeawayworld.net/nba/20-nba-players-who-went-broke-and-lost-millions-of-dollars

If you check the link above, you would see players that earned up to $100 million in their career declaring bankruptcy, what's $15 million that can't be lost if you're careless. It's not easy to make millions of dollars but it's harder to hold on to it. You think billionaires like Dangote, Musk, Zuckerberg etc are stupid looking for more money despite being billionaires? They understand the laws of money that if they are to remain wealthy, they must obey the laws of money and become master at it. And you can only become a master when you're employer and never an employee.

Footballers, basketball stars, CEOs of companies, and attorneys at large law firms all earn salaries and are rich.
PAs to wealthy people also earn salaries and are rich. Perhaps you're the one who wasted his school fees grin grin

First of all, being rich is a relative term. If you have 100k in your account, you're a rich man to someone that has 1k in his account. However, a wealthy man or woman is wealthy anywhere in the world which is why there is billionaires list. I hope you understand that. Secondly, I see your examples and I giggled. Do you know the number of retired footballers and basketballers that became poor after retirement? Google broke retired NBA players or football players and be amazed. Don't get me started with musicians and artists. An average celebrity is one or 2 mistakes away from becoming poor after retirement if they didn't invest while making the dough. For CEOs, attorneys or whoever is earning salaries monthly, they are just few months from becoming wretched if they don't save, invest or own a business once they get fired from the job.

If you don't know this by now, I'm not sorry to say you have wasted all the money your parents spent on your education. Earning a salary will make you a living but owning a business will make you a fortune.

Thanks for the reply once again. But one last question to you and every elder in Canada ( studying, PR or citizen) because I know you are all busy.

For someone accepted by MA program at Uvictoria of BC(Co-op) and UofToronto(no co-op), with full scholarship covering fees and upkeep, which will you choose or advise to choose, and why? Thank you.

I assume you have full scholarship for both programs. If so, in as much as U of T is enticing (being the top Uni in Canada), I will go for U of Vic. The reasons are, 1. The U of Vic program has a Co-op, with this you can continue working with the company after graduating, and if unfortunately you aint retained, at least you would have 6 months of Canadian work experience which gives you competitive advantage in the labour market. 2. Comparatively, the labour market in Victoria BC is less competitive to that of Toronto. 3. Though Victoria is the capital of BC, it is a smaller city with serene and calm environment compare to crazy big city environment of Toronto. 4. BC is just one hell of beautiful province smiley

Thank you for the reply.

You and other founding fathers dwell a lot on the PR and citizenship back then. Am opportuned to read it. Co-op program was also talked about then and Second-tier citizenship I guess. What role does 6 month co-op play in applying for PR immediately after study?
Is the second-tier citizenship still on and any limit to benefits they enjoy?

With 6 month Co-op program, you can get employed by the company after you finish. And you need a permanent full-time job when applying for the express entry program.
About the 2nd tier citizenship, it's called bill C-24. The essence was to stop terrorists from using Canada as a safe haven for their devilish act. The government realize that there are some immigrants and children of immigrants that have dual citizenship, and because of this, they join extreme terrorists group believing that Canadian government will fight on their behalf when they get caught. Hence the government passed a bill that if you have dual citizenship, and you commit a terrorist act, your Canadian citizenship will be revoked. Apart from this, you have every single right and benefit as any other Canadian. In honesty, Canadians are very hospitable and open-minded.

You are highly welcome. Congrats on your PR. We hope to celebrate your citizenship in 4 years time I guess. Abi how many years between PR and filing to Citizenship? Also why did it take that long to get your PR or that's the norm? Did You enter through PhD?
I hope to we get to learn from your experience. Also, kindly share some of your falls and ups during study and towards getting your PR and what you did to come out strong. Thank you.

Yes you are right, you have to be physically present in Canada for 1460 days after PR. Considering that I was in school for 1 year n half then work for another one year before applying, 3.5 years is not long.
I believe studying in Canada is not that hard, though you may have loads of course work, but the professors are always willing to provide assistance. On getting PR, you need to finish your school program first, then get a skilled work.
There are different streams you can apply through, but the fastest is the Express entry. With Canadian educational qualification and skilled job experience, the chance of getting enough points for ITA (Invitation to apply) is high.

Wow! This thread is going strong by the day.
Joined this thread when it was part 2, followed info from experts. I've been in Canada for over 4 years now, got my permanent residency earlier this year and counting down to my citizenship.
This is the kinna thread that makes you thank God for the day you joined Nairaland. Not the snake killing, pre-wedding shooting, tribal bashing threads that are now order of the day on Nairaland frontpage

I like this thread.

If there is one thing I really wish I know before leaving Nigeria, it's surely technical skill such as carpentry, welding, autobody, plumbing, auto mechanic etc. During economic downturn, people with these skills still get jobs.

@OP, the job you have learnt and graduated from is known as Glazing here in Canada. As a matter of fact, an average income for a Glazier is about 44k canadian dollars annually before tax. I saw in your post that you gained admission to study criminology at NOUN. Do you want to do the program because you want to have BSc just like everyone else or you like it. If you do like it, go for it, you will always have glazing to fall back on if things get hard in the job market. If not, I will advise you to continue with your glazing and get formal education in the skill from a certified technical school. With hands on experience and formal education, sky is the starting point for you my friend. I must say you write pretty well too.

We live in sham believing we are one in this country.

I don't preach separation but I know that if you go to the north, you will be denied certain privileges cos you're from the south and same happens in other regions.

we should as a people,do this:
1. abolish state of origin
2. rotate presidency amongst all the regions or better still implement true federalism.
3. implement PIB

Trust me,the best way to bury Biafra is regionalism but I wonder why the Nigeria govt after saying the east has no natural resources and are ravaged by erosion still don't want regionalism. Bring regionalism and let those easterners suffer if you feel your claims are right.
