Afrocatalyst: Just waking up?

Why didn't FG issue the ban when lagos came up with LASRRA and deportation of some people to their hometowns?

Why now that the Imo state government has taken same path.

I perceive cowardice.

My advice to Mr President: do what is right whether you are going to step on toes or not. People are watching and this might be your last chance as a president.

You should have done this long time ago with the LASG.

The bolded is not for deportation but for planning as even indegenes are required to register. Be informed

Well said that means we should mount pressures to the ministry of works and let them do their works. Beside every government need the citizen's supports to progress. Lets us not count ourselves out from our own responsibilities as citizens. And who told you the people have not complained over the years?

Yes it is our responsibility as citizens to report and remind the government the roads that are not good enough to walk on. FG may not be passing every road so they may not know that it is not good for us. Everyone has a duty to do as a good citizen, report any problem you see and the people responsible for solving the problem will do it.

There's a ministry of works, they have an offices in Lagos and have officers to report. If only the the people in the right places are doing their jobs and if they don't do their jobs it rests on the FG to do something about it which wasn't done before now. No Excuse

Your Last question, yes! we need to show them there responsibility. Because its for our own welfare. You stay in Apapa, having delays in going to ur bizness, wasted time and opportunities, stressed out and as a result becomes unproductive etc, the other man is in Abuja (Aso Rock) living a good life. Does not wake early to beat traffic or go anywhere to meet up with appointments etc, and u expect him to no what is happening in Apapa, if u dont tell them, they dont know because they have evil men around them who tell them that all is well just to get some evil money to spend around. SO bro, if u have opportunity of telling them what they need to know, pls do

Those that do are labelled opposition, boko haram, supporter of APC, etc instead of appreciating them and considering their solutions

Does Fashola and Lagosians need to cry out before the FG will do the right thing? Same happened for the Apapa-Oshodi expressway, it took a frontpage report by sun news for FG to give attention to that road and start patching and the took the exposure of watchinglagos.com for them to stop patching and instead, rebuild which has been impressive so far. Must we show the FG their responsibility?

Politics / "Police" Hoodlums Attack Amuwo LG Secretariat In Lagos, Injure Officials by pheesayor(m): 8:26pm On Jul 17, 2014
A gang called “Community Policing Youth Vanguard” in Festac
area of Lagos State on Monday allegedly invaded the Amuwo
Odofin Local Council Secretariat, attacking and injuring
officials of the Local Council on Monday, 14th July, 2014.
The group which is allegedly owned and used by the Area
Commander in the Festac area, ACP Dan Okoro, is said to be
unleashing haphazard mayhem in the area with heavy reliance
on the arbitrary backing of the Area Commander, Mr. Dan
Okoro.
According to officials of the council, activities reported of the
gang in the past had included rape, robbery and unwarranted
physical molestation of residents.
The council Chairman, Mr. Ayo Adewale, said he had severally
reported activities of the group to police authority, but that
nothing had been done to curb them or their police clout, Mr.
Dan Okoro, the Area Commander who invented the group.
He also said Mr. Dan Okoro, in blatant display had threatened
to continue using the group against the Local Council.
In a recent scuffle between the gang and security details of
the Local Council, for instance, ACP Dan Okoro was said to
have brazenly opend restricted roads for trucks and personally
driven with truck owners to use the routes against orders
protecting the roads for maintenance.
With the attack on council secretariat on Monday, the group’s
alleged nefarious activities added another mileage. The
hoodlums reportedly invaded the Local Council office, wielding
bottles, machetes and other dangerous weapons and attacking
employees of the Council Secretariat.
The Local Council Chairman, Mr. Ayo Adewale said he was
their target, but had been rescued by men of the NSCDC and
the Rapid Response Squad, after police details attached to his
office watched the hoodlums without stopping them.
He said the hoodlums numbered about a hundred when they
swooped on the secretariat and overpowered the security
around the council office. He narrated stated that the group
had unleashed a major mayhem earlier in the day and one of
their leaders had been arrested and handed over to the police.
The arrested gang member however, was released upon
intervention by ACP Dan Okoro, following which they struck at
the Council Secretariat later around 5.30pm on the day.
Asides from ACP Dan Okoro’s “police” hoodlums, another
individual identified as Fatai Onifade is said to have also been
inspired by the impunity of the group and had created his own
gang. Fatai was quoted as claiming to belong to Dr. Fredrick
Fasheun’s faction of the OPC. Fasheun had however denied
him, but both hoodlum gangs still walk free and continued
with their activities.
Previously, the Local Chairman said he had led a protest
against activities of the gang, after the Area Commander, ACP
Dan Okoro allegedly spearheaded brazen violation of
Government orders, obtaining illegal money from trucks drivers
and leading them through areas of their restriction.
Adewale suggested that their attacks continued as he had
refused to recognize the “unlawful” group.
“The group is not recognized by law”, he said, adding that he
would not recognize any gang of hoodlums.
He also warned that his life is under serious threats by the
hoodlums.

“May I use this medium to inform the general public that if
anything should happen to me or members of my family,
Emmanuel Onwa, Fatai Onifade a.k.a Apashe, Niyi and The
Area E Commander, ACP Dan Okoro who formed that group
should be the first set of people to be investigated and held
responsible”, he said.

Not to talk of the VAT,corporate taxes ,license fees being carted out of Lagos for sharing to laggard states.
Even after robbing peter to pay Paul, they still send all their responsibilities and poverty to Lagos .
If Fashola talks they say he's talking because he is off the opposition, instead of using brains to check out the facts.

Yomieluv: is the port only the business there,it should be joint effort.other business are there, that the state government tax..

The port is the major constituent of nuisance on that route, they've even spread to Iganmu/Orile axis hereby causing traffic there too
Politics / Fashola Visits Apapa Again, Calls On Fg To Live Up To Its Responsibility by pheesayor(m): 2:34pm On Jul 14, 2014
“Mismanagement of fuel and the Port is destroying Apapa and destroying Lagos; this must stop”, he says.
Keeping faith with his promise to be back in a week’s time to monitor progress in the efforts to address the problem of traffic gridlock in Apapa, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola again visited the Tin Can Port road and Creek road among others on Sunday calling on the Federal Government to live up to its responsibility by restoring the infrastructural damage which, he says, is threatening to destroy the area.
During his visit last week Sunday, Fashola who expressed dismay at the traffic gridlock created by the tankers, especially on Creek Road and other roads leading to both Apapa and Tin Can Island Ports, met with the leadership of the tanker drivers’ association and extracted a promise from them to create at least one lane to enable other road users in the area to access their homes and businesses.
Fielding questions from journalists after the inspection of the Tincan Port Road and Creek Road, Governor Fashola frowned at the deterioration in the area saying the State Government is paying heavily for the damage caused by the mismanagement of the Ports and fuel distribution by the Federal Government.
He told newsmen, “You can see, this is where tankers fall every day, claiming lives, damaging peoples’ vehicles. It is a herculean task everyday that we have to remove one container or one fallen tanker from here all because of the mismanagement by the Federal Government of its Ports responsibility and of its fuel distribution responsibility”.
”Our land has been desecrated; you can see the destruction, people living on the road simply because the Federal Government cannot manage the distribution of fuel. People are defecating in open drains, all the drains here have become refuse dumps all because the Federal Government wants to give us fuel”, he said.
Pointing out that the State Government does not benefit from all the revenue generated at the Ports and from the fuel distribution, Fashola noted, “The Federal Government wants to run a Port. Look at the roads here, they have all gone. And we don’t get derivation from oil but we pay so heavily for the distribution of fuel”.
“Residents must know this is a Federal problem, it is not the State’s problem; the distribution of fuel is a Federal problem. The Federal Government must get up now and change the game and live up to its responsibility. Its mismanagement of fuel and the Port is destroying Apapa and destroying Lagos; this must stop”, the Governor said.
Asked what option the Federal Government should adopt to solve the problem, Fashola said, “Well I don’t know what options the Federal Government has but clearly road haulage of fuel by tankers and containers is not going to work. The roads cannot stand it no matter how hard you build them. So, instead of its slogans and propaganda about transformation, this place needs to be transformed”.
The Governor recalled that when the State Government started the work to improve the situation at Apapa, the Federal Government came and indicated its intention to work with the State Government but added that one year after that expression of intention, the Federal Government has not shown up.
“We started this work; they came and said they wanted to work with us. We have not heard from them over a year after that. This place has returned to a worse state from where we pushed it when they came”, he said.
Speaking to some leaders of the National Road Transport Owners at the Apapa Ports entrance, Fashola said everyone, including the transporters, the cargo owners and other stakeholders, has a role to play in the effort to restore sanity in the area adding that the State Government is ready to work with other agencies to make things better.
He told them, “I promised to be here this week and I am here; and as you have acknowledged, we have at least achieved some progress over one week. Although it is not all yet done, we have established one lane compliance from two, three lanes on this Creek Road and access to the Port”.
Noting that Apapa is the nation’s oldest industrial Estate, Fashola declared, “What I don’t understand is how this Federal Government left the Apapa Port and fuel distribution to deteriorate like this. Because this is the oldest or one of the oldest ports in the country and if this is the largest contributor to the economy of the country, I think there should be a more responsible management approach to this Port by the Federal Government”.
“All the roads here are Federal roads; I have just passed the Apapa – Oshodi Expressway leading to Tin Can Island and what you see there just makes the heart bleed. By mismanaging the Ports, by mismanaging the distribution of fuel, the Federal Government has just paralyzed the Apapa Industrial Estate and the GRA”, he said.
He described as tragic the fact that the distribution of daily good and the distribution of fuel which, according to him, “many countries have taken for granted”, has become a big problem for Nigeria adding, “We are at the point where we must choose between our life and fuel”.
The Governor, however, promised to continue to work through the agencies of Government to improve the situation in the area adding that he would continue to monitor the progress while the State’s Transport Management Agency, LASTMA, and other law enforcement agencies of the State would be deployed to assist in bring sanity to the area.
Earlier, the President of the Maritime Truck Owners Association, Mr. Remi Ogungbemi, had thanked the Governor for his continued effort to bring sanity into the traffic situation in the area saying the major problem was that while many businesses have come into the estate in the last 40 years, there has been no corresponding increase in infrastructure adding that the places designated for parking vehicles have been taken over by other businesses.
In his contribution, the General Manager (Admin) for the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), Mr. Aloga Ogbogo, also thanked the State Governor for his continued intervention at the Estate in spite of the fact that the Federal Government owns the businesses there.
He, however, appealed to the Governor to assist in an ongoing negotiation between the association and landlords of a 61 hectare land area around Mile 2 saying if the association could acquire the land, it would solve the problem of parking space for all the tankers and trailers presently causing traffic gridlock in Apapa.
Politics / What Will President Jonathan Tell The People Of Borno During His Campaign? by pheesayor(m): 6:36pm On Jul 11, 2014
#BringBackOurGirls: What Will President Jonathan Tell The People Of Borno During His Campaign?

I don’t know if Mr. President will be contesting in next year’s presidential election but there are indications that he will. I have seen some adverts showcasing his achievements so far. One advert even compares the president with Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr., Lee Kuan Yew, Barack Obama and probably others. That particular advert is indeed an audacious one but I don’t think it has achieved its purpose because I have observed that whenever the advert is aired on TV, those I am with almost always are not amused. So it may be safe to conclude that the adverts are part of the moves being made to secure re-election for the president. I don’t know if the president, his advisers, his party and political associates have ever thought that the current Boko Haram crisis may be a moral and political burden for both the president and the PDP.

It’s over 80 days now that the innocent school girls were abducted form Chibok and the government has failed to liberate them. It is reported that seven among the parents of the girls have died. All the government has been able to do since the event has been to assure Nigerians that the girls will be rescued. The Chibok abduction has gained worldwide attention, and all over the world, the kidnapping has been condemned with passionate rescue the girls. There is even a dedicated Wikipedia page for the kidnapping:

While some Nigerians have taken it upon themselves to pressurize the government on a daily basis to secure the girls’ freedom, the government has not demonstrated to Nigerians its seriousness to bring back the girls. In fact, the (in)actions of the government has brought opprobrium to our nation, going by the comments of foreigners who seem to be more concerned about the safety of these girls than our government and sadly, some Nigerians. These are some of the critical comments that have been made concerning the abduction issue:

Boko Haram’s strength “appears to be increasing. The government’s ability to provide security to its citizens appears to be decreasing.” – Former United States Ambassador to Nigeria, John Campbell

“If (the U.S.) knew where the kidnapped girls were, I certainly would send in U.S. troops to rescue them, in a New York minute I would, without permission of the host country. I wouldn’t be waiting for some kind of permission from some guy named Goodluck Jonathan.” – Senator John McCain

“We have never called the United Nations to guard our security. Me, Yoweri Museveni to say that I have failed to protect my people and I call on the UN: I would rather hang myself. We prioritized national security by developing a strong Army, otherwise our Uganda would be like DRC, South Sudan, Somalia or Nigeria where militias have disappeared with school children.” – President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda

The major aim of this write-up is to ask President Goodluck Jonathan how he will go about his campaign for president if he fails to bring back the girls. Will Mr. President go to Borno State to campaign? Or will he stay away from the state? If he stays away from Borno, how is it going to look like? If he decides to campaign in Borno, what will he tell the people of the state? Even if the girls are found and brought back, knowing what they would have gone through, will the president have the moral justification to face the people of the state to ask for their votes? What will he tell them? Will he tell them that if they vote him in for a second term, he will ensure that the girls are brought back? Or will he tell them he deserves a second term for bringing back their children after many days in the bush? How will the president go around the nation with the Boko Haram albatross around his neck? Will he be able to convince Nigerians that he will be able to protect the territorial integrity of our nation if a well-organised foreign army comes against our nation? Does the president ever think about how much damage the Chibok school girls abduction has done, is doing and will do to his campaign? Does he think he will win in a free and fair election?
Whatever the president’s answers to my questions may be and whether he will contest for a second term or not, he should please #BringbackourGirls.

Thanks a lot, I'm looking at the discomfort of smell of garlic, especially with colleagues at work. I will stop white rice, I've replaced white bread with wheat bread, whole cream milk with skimmed milk (mostly dano slim), sugar with honey. I can't jog due to fatigue and palpitations but I've very comfortable with cycling. My meal now constitute mainly of blended fruits (most time pineapple and water melon), am I on the right track?

armyofone: Start adding garlic to your meal. One glove daily. Peel, chop and leave it for 10 minutes. Then add to your dinner. Don't warm it with your food... just chop, leave for 10 mins then add to meals.
Stop eating white rice...especially at night time. Eat brown rice more than white rice. Eat more fish too...
Again start adding garlic to your daily meals, it helps.
Don't forget to walk, jog or run at least 5 times a week for at least 30 minutes.

Health / Lagos Opens Ultra Modern Cardiac And Renal Centre by pheesayor(m): 9:32am On Jul 09, 2014
SIGNS CONCESSION AGREEMENT ON MANAGEMENT OF THE FACILITY

Lagos State Government has opened for the use of the public the first ultra modern cardiac and renal centre at Gbagada area of Lagos.

This is in a bid to stop the spate of medical trips abroad as well as build local capacity especially for ailments that could be treated locally but for the absence of expertise and facilities.

The facility which is designed to handle heart and kidney related diseases also offers out-patient services, diagnostic services, ultrasound, CT scan, Echo cardiograph, Stress Electrocardiography, laboratory services, fluoroscopy, ocular investigation for complications from hypertension, diabetes and renal conditions, haemo-dialysis for acute and chronic kidney diseases with 24 dialysis machine, admission for all cardiac conditions that requires hospital stay, critical care in intensive care unit (ICU) and high dependency wards, cardiac cauterization, non invasive cardiology, open heart surgery, renal surgery, nursing and diabetic services, rehabilitation services and corporate wellness program.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris while giving reasons for embarking on the project noted that the State government through the Ministry of Health considers it appropriate and timely to have a befitting cardiac and renal centre due to the increasing number of patients presenting with end stage renal failure adding also that the lack of a purpose built renal specialist centre, the periodic nature of the cardiac and renal missions which has limited the number of beneficiaries and the need to conserve the financial resources currently being expended in the management of patients with renal and cardiac diseases in foreign countries are key reasons for building the facility.

He noted that cardiac and renal diseases constitute a growing health burden globally stressing that there is what is called a triple jeopardy in the health sector especially in Lagos and Nigeria which require efforts of stakeholders in State health system to address.

Said he “we have what we call double jeopardy but now it is triple jeopardy in the sense that we do not only have problems with communicable diseases, we are now having problems with non-communicable diseases, and the third one has to do with mental health. But this project is trying to address the major aspect of the non-communicable disease burden”.

Idris added that the non-communicable disease burden prompted the State government to embark on the screening of people for hypertension and diabetes which are major contributor to the cardiac and renal ailment burden as part of its preventive and health promotion strategy stressing that the study from screening conducted State-wide showed that roughly 20% of the people who were screened were hypertensive and between 5 and 6% were diabetic.

“Not only that, we also do know that these two diseases jointly cause serious complications in people who have these problems; and once you have these problems, you have them for life if they are not properly treated”, Idris explained.

The Commissioner also noted that State government had over the years earmarked as part of its free health policy quite a huge chunk of its budget to sponsor people abroad on various medical problems that could not be treated in the country where the needed expertise and facilities are not available stressing that it is the copulation of these factors that prompted the State government to build the cardiac and renal centre.

“A copulation of these factors prompted the need for us to build facilities locally, find a way of staffing them locally to provide the needed services to treat people of these ailments, reduce the number of money we are spending to sponsor people abroad, and more importantly to build local capacity, he stressed

Idris also opined that setting up of the facility will help bring back home Nigerian medical specialists referring to it as a way of ‘brain gain’ to defeat the ‘brain drain’ phenomenon stressing that over the years quite a number of indigenous medical personnel have left the country for greener pastures outside of the country due to lack of infrastructure and facilities with which to exhibit their skills.

“We have over 2000 specialists in the United States, similar number in Europe and Canada. And this is one way of brain gain instead of brain drain because if you established a facility with the right equipment and infrastructure, we can use that to attract the specialist abroad back home where they can exhibit their expertise and at the same time build local capacity here. That was the basic underlining reason why we decided to embark on this project.he said.

The Commissioner explained that the cardiac and renal centre building project started in 2008 when the award was made to Messr Deaux project Limited stressing that facility which was also equipped by the company will be managed privately through a five year operation and management concession by a suitably qualified competent consortium of medical professionals renewable for another five years term subject to satisfactory performance and mutual agreement of the parties wherein the proponent will provide all the health care services; clinical and non-clinical and total facilities management required for the value-engineering Renal and Cardiac Centre.

He noted that the need to get a suitably qualified competent consortium that has the needed requirement to run the facility prompted the state to opt for a public-private partnership agreement through the office of public-private partnership adding that this aim results in the appointment of Renescor Health Limited Liability Partnership to run and manage the facility.

Idris listed training of local medical personnel especially the establishment of a state government sponsored foreign capacity building for medical personnel as part of the concession agreement aside the operation and management concession.

The Commissioner for Finance who doubles as the Supervising Head for the Public-Private Partnership Office, Mr. Ayo Gbeleyi noted that the reason for opting for qualified competent consortium of medical professionals to manage the facility through a PPP initiative was due to dearth of appropriate competent staff in this environment and the highly specialized nature of the equipment and services to be rendered within the facility.

He added that the PPP office is quite convinced of the capabilities of the private managers stressing that they are expected to provide quality services in line with international best practices, promote medical tourism, provide training field to develop the capacity of state’s own health personnel and facilitate a gradual paradigm shift on dependence on foreign expertise with the skilled empowerment of local professionals.

The Managing Director of Renescor Health Limited Liability Partnership Dr. Ladi Awosika who was present at the event to sign the concession agreement gave kudos to the State government for building the state-of-the-art facilities which he described as first of its kind in sub Saharan Africa taking out South Africa and Angola.

He added that the cardiac and renal centre has been built to very good specification that specialists who have signed up with the company attest to, stressing that the centre has facility for telemedicine which will make every procedure going on in the facility to be reviewed by colleagues anywhere in the world thereby ensuring that training and cutting edge facility therapy will be available at the facility.

Awosika explained that Messr Renescour is made up mainly of Nigerian specialists in Diaspora who could not get any space to work in Nigeria stressing that when they saw what was on ground, they pledged to contribute their quota through the facility.

“As at today we have about 200 Nigerian specialists who have signed on to be a part of this. Some of them have decided that it will not even be for money, rather they will take one or two weeks vacation to be at this centre to impact their knowledge and skills to the people of Lagos in particular and Nigeria in general”, he said.

Awosika noted that more facilities of the magnitude of the cardiac and renal centre is required in the State to be able to satisfy the demand of more than 21 million residents of the State and promote medical tourism in Lagos. He thereafter pledged that his company will not let the down.

Politics / Fashola Inspects Traffic Gridlock Points In Mile 2, Apapa by pheesayor(m): 3:15pm On Jul 07, 2014
FASHOLA INSPECTS TRAFFIC GRIDLOCK POINTS IN MILE 2, APAPA, ASKS TANKER DRIVERS TO EASE TRAFFIC IN APAPA WITHIN ONE-WEEK

As Governor appeals to citizens to bear with Government on road construction, repairs

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), Sunday inspected the traffic gridlock points at the Mile 2 under bridge of the Lagos – Badagry Expressway undergoing expansion and Creek Road in Apapa, extracting a commitment from fuel tanker operators to ease traffic on the roads leading to Apapa within one week.

Residents of the two areas have in the last few weeks complained to the Government over the pains of traffic gridlock on the Mile 2 Road caused by a combination of continuous trading on the road and dumping of refuse in the drainage; and the Creek Road and adjoining areas in Apapa rendered made impassible by fuel tankers seeking to load fuel from the tank farms in the area.

Fielding questions from newsmen after the inspection of Creek Road which has been taken over by the fuel tankers, Fashola said government was prepared to wait for a week as promised by the operators to organize the parking of their tankers in a way that traffic could move on the road adding that if they complied voluntarily there would be no need for enforcement.

He told newsmen, “It is when people don’t comply voluntarily that you need enforcement. When people comply voluntarily, there will be no need for enforcement”, adding that Government only intend to make the tanker operators realize the amount of pain they are causing residents and other businesses in the area by their operations.

“What we intend to achieve here is to make the tanker operators here, NUPENG and their affiliates, to understand that their business operation is inflicting pain on residents of Apapa and once they understand that, it is important then to see what kind of empathy that they bring to the business”.

The Governor said the operators had agreed that they would make some changes within one week adding, “It is easier for me when a man says I am willing to change my ways that is hurting people. If we don’t see that change, we know what to do on behalf of taxpayers and on behalf of the people who we represent”.

Expressing the determination of Government to ensure that other businesses survive in Apapa, Fashola said owners of the oil companies that have tank farms in Apapa would visit the area in the course of the week as a group “to see for themselves how they make profit and the cost of that profit on ordinary citizens”.

“I think once they see this I am sure we will begin to see some organization and some empathy. Thankfully I have one of them with me here and he has also seen for himself what the people acting on their behalf are doing here and he has given me his word that in the shortest possible time we will begin to see changes”, the Governor said.

He, however said easing traffic on the road would only constitute a temporary and relieving measure adding that some of the questions that should be asked included what kind of business and economy we want to run as a country and why is fuel being distributed with so much pain.

Fashola asked, “Is it a business and an economy that causes pain? Why is this the only place where fuel is being distributed with so much pain? So what are the NNPCs of this world doing? Where is all the money that is coming out of this port going? At some point it was reported that in half a year this port made N1.4 trillion’ where did the money go, why didn’t we put it back into this business?”

The Governor continued, “Why are we transporting fuel by road, why can’t we do it by rail? Now make no mistake about it. There is a side of their business that we must listen to. We are the ones using the fuel and about 3,000 trucks load here every day and they have to come here. So this is the place we put fuel, why can’t we pump fuel across the country, from Atlas Cove to Mosinmi and all of that. Why are those facilities not working, what has happened to them?”

According to him, “Those are the questions that if we ask ourselves and if we tackle them, will provide a final and long term solution. So it is us really that are the problem and if we sit down and think about it and the agency of the Federal Government, managing the port, managing fuel should also get up and see what is happening”.

“It is not enough to sit down and place adverts to say there is fuel at a pump price. What is the cost of taking that fuel to the people? What is the real purpose, why do I have fuel if it cannot take me to my office? So it is a really hard choice for government and the citizens, but I am sure we can do it”, he said.

Earlier, at the Mile 2 stopover, Fashola said he chose to inspect the places and see things for himself because of the incessant complaints by the citizenry in the last few weeks over the traffic gridlock in the area adding that the main cause of the Mile 2 problem was that the contractors have to work while the people use the road.

“There are so many issues involved, if you go there now you see that our contractors are working and that is consistent with the commitment of government to continue to provide service. Citizens want roads built and upgraded and already this is not a virgin land, it is a fully built-up city”, he explained.

Noting that it would have been easier for Government to shut down the road for say two months while work was going on, Fashola declared, “But it is not possible. So this is part of what causes the inconvenience, we have to build while citizens use the roads”, adding that the major places where the complaints are highest are Mile 2 and the Apapa area.

The Governor appealed to the citizens not to contribute to the problem by trading on the road pointing out that the problem of traffic was equally being caused by those trading on the road and even those making their purchases on the road as well as those who throw refuse into the drains.

According to the Governor, “The main problem that we have seen here is that the drain has been filled with refuse, nylon, pure water sachets, by people around here. The consequence of all this is that on a road that is vulnerable, we have had rain everyday for the last two weeks now, there is no way for the water to go”.

“So we have called the contractor in, they have to evacuate the water to drain into tankers in order to provide some relief. You can see now that it is moving. But no sooner we leave here than trading will start again. They will start dumping refuse, waste, biscuit paper, bread paper, orange pearls into the drain. If we enforce, they say we don’t like the poor but it is the poor that inflict this pain on all of us as it were and everybody suffers”, he said.

He appealed to the people to restrain themselves to do things the proper way adding, “People should stop dumping refuse into the drains; we have said this over and over again. It has been our message every time the rains come. Rain is part of our weather and if we don’t prepare for it we will feel this kind of pain”.

Appealing to the residents to bear with the Government over the inconveniences they suffer as a result of the ongoing construction, Fashola noted, however, that the citizens want government to build roads and government is responding to that demand adding, “During the period of construction there will be some inconvenience; inconvenience because we want to make it better”.

The Governor said a more important aspect of the problem was the fact that Lagos roads are subjected to very unusual tonnage adding, “There is no part of the world that I know where they are moving 3,000 tankers everyday on road. Every day, it is one container falling down or one tanker exploding and these are matters in which the State has no control”.

“We don’t control the Ports, we don’t control fuel importation or discharge; these are Federal Government responsibilities going on through our State. Now trillions of Naira is being made at the Ports, why is the money not being put back. Why is the money not being invested in rehabilitating the existing rail route? There is an existing rail from the Port out of Lagos, why can’t we rehabilitate that and put these containers there?’ he asked.

He said part of the problem that Apapa is facing today is that government is responding to the demands of citizens who want their roads upgraded adding that while the Federal Government contractors are working on the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, the same contractor is working for the Lagos State Government inside Apapa on Warehouse Road, Marine Road and Creek Road.

“But in all of that we are carrying by tankers and by trailers. They should go on rail. There is an old rail route there that the Europeans built, it can work. So we can concentrate out energy on it so that these roads will last. They will not last if we build them and subject them to this tonnage”, he said.

On the tendency by some stakeholders to also blame the gridlock often recorded on the Apapa- Oshodi Expressway on the State, Fashola, who exonerated Lagos State from any blame declared, “That road clearly is a Federal road and until they hand it over we cannot take responsibility for it. This is something they budget for. It is not part of our budget”.

“Ikorodu Road used to be a Federal Road until we took it over, it was released by the former President and you can see the work that we are doing there, the work that continues to go on there. So these responsibilities are clearly defined. Apapa-Oshodi Expressway is a Federal Road even the Lagos - Badagry Expressway is a Federal road but we are intervening because our citizens use them”, the Governor said.

According to him, “We can’t intervene in all Federal Government roads because we just don’t have the capacity. The Federal Government takes 52 percent of this country’s revenue, we take one over 36 of 21 percent of the nation’s revenue which the 36 states share. That is how onerous our responsibilities here is”.

Noting that people have the impression that Lagos is rich, , the Governor declared, “Add our meagre allocation from the Federal Government to the internally generated revenues and add the population and divide it. The reality is that we are one of the poorest states”.

“States that have three million, four million and five million people get more than N30 billion a month and some of their people are here. We are happy that they are, they are part of our citizenry, they are part of our residents. But the responsibilities must be honestly and appropriately allocated”, he said.

Appealing to the citizen to bear with Government in the process of giving them service, Fashola, however, noted, “But we work within a limited budget and if you make a budget and you cannot fund them it is as good as not making a budget. So our total, budget for the year is about N496 billion and the Federal Government budget for the year is about N4 trillion”.

Highlight of the inspection was the Governor’s dialogue with the representatives of tanker drivers Association and NUPENG officials, business owners and some residents of Apapa during which the Governor extracted a promise from the tanker operators to leave one lane free on Creek Road to allow traffic to move within the area. The operators gave a commitment to do so within one week.

With the Governor during the inspection were Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat and his Environment counterpart, Mr. Tunji Bello, the Special Adviser on Works and Infrastructure, Engnr. Ganiyu Johnson among other officials of Government, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Oando PLC, Mr. Wale Tinubu, the Publisher of Business Day, Mr. Frank Aigbogun, while members of NUPENG, some residents of Apapa and a representative of the tank farm operators met the team at Apapa.

Politics / Lagos APC Youth Leader Condemns Carnage By Nigerian Army In Lagos by pheesayor(m): 3:06pm On Jul 07, 2014
The Lagos APC Youth leader Mr. Omotayo Sanyaolu, has strongly condemned the Friday morning carnage perpetuated by men of the Nigerian Army on Ikorodu Road, Lagos.
A terse statement from the office of the APC’s Youth Leader reads, “The destruction of state-owned property by men and women, who ought to be prepared to die while safeguarding our collective existence, is incomprehensible. This has again raised salient questions begging to be answered; who is the Nigerian’s military serving? Do they represent the interest of the Nigeria people or a certain section? Is the Nigerian Army serving the interest of those who are bent on ‘capturing’ Lagos come 2015?”
“It’s day 81 today that our sisters have been kidnapped from Chibok, yet there is no hope of bringing them back alive. If men of the Nigerian Army feel the urge to unleash violence, their services is urgently needed in Sambisa forest where members of the Boko Haram terrorists are hiding.
“As much as the Youth in Lagos understand the angst of the soldiers whose colleague was alleged to have been knocked down by a BRT driver, we disagree that the incident excuses the mayhem that followed. The impunity with which those buses were burnt and others ruthlessly vandalised cannot be justified. There are procedures to be followed. In such a case as this, the RULE OF LAW requires that the driver be handed over to the civilian authority for prosecution in a civilian court.
“The Nigerian Army must understand that this is not military regime. They must remain in their barracks except a democratically elected authority request their services in quelling unrest beyond the capacity of the civil law enforcement agencies.
“Therefore, I call on the President, Chief of Defence staff and the Chief of Army Staff to see that justice is done in this matter. A failure to properly and conclusively probe today’s events can have devastating consequences on our young democracy. A return to the dark days, which the young are happy to have missed and the old are eager to forget, is in no one’s best interest.
“I also want to thank the ever-vibrant and indefatigable youth and people of Lagos for showing restraint in the face of today’s unfortunate happening. Those who were physically manhandled and made to perform degrading acts of punishment are encouraged to seek legal redress.
“Ours is the State of Excellence and those uncomfortable with the peace and prosperity we enjoy are free to express themselves, but with less abrasiveness.
“Eko Oni Baje o!”

bootstrap: Funny thing tho.. if you wnt to blame anyone, I guess u shld blame God...lol

Seriously tho. . It is, and will always be in the human nature to wnt to be associated, to dominate, to hv sm sort of "sacred-ness". If you hv ever attended any decision making meeting befor, especially being a member of a small group late at night, you will understand.

Frm a special church comitee membership, to a political party caucus or to a school comitee. Everybody hv the inate craving to wnt to be amongst an "elite" group. To yield power (ask our politicians)

Fraternities exit all over the world, different motives tho. But with the underlying aim to dominate and to be shapers and directors.

Cultism in our high institutions same as a lot of vices in nigeria cannot hv a single blancket reason. But on the face of it.. I will atribute it to the high level of INDISCIPLINE in Nigeria. Parents are bad examples to their kids, politicians are no better. We hv all sacrificed dignity, responsibility, dedication, love for our fellow man on the alter of greed, pride, fame, furtune and oppression.

Christian dislike/distrust muslims and muslims with equal passion against christians. Opposing Political parties hating and killing one another and the gov? Continiously f**king the citizens. These traits rub off on our kids and they grow, get to high institutions and are no different.

Finally, in my opinion to solve the cultism issue on our campuses, cultism (fraternities) need to be legalised. It shld be registered on campus, members shld be known, and then held responsible for any of their actions. Pple generally tend to drift towards things wrong, things outlawed, things considered secrets. Let every one be free to associate, so long as they are ready to be identified and held responsible for their actions.

The bolded is what government over the years have ignored, you CAN'T eradicate campus cultism with the kind of root is has grown (even outside school to residential areas). Let them be registered, their members known so whenever there are issues, you know who to tackle. But no, government keeps living in denial because these cultists (the violent ones) are useful to them from time to time.
