Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has contacted and consoled the husband and family of Mrs Bolanle Raheem, who was killed by a policeman on Christmas day in Lagos.

Raheem, who was pregnant, was fatally shot on Dec. 25 by a police officer attached to the Ajiwe police division in the Ajah area of the state.

This is as police authorities confirmed they had transferred all personnel in the Ajah Police Station, two of whom have shot dead two Lagosians in recent times.

The family of Raheem, a Lagos-based lawyer, and Gbenga, the husband, have been receiving guests since the unfortunate incident.
Osinbajo contacted the husband and family on Dec. 28 to condole and pray with them, even though aides say he has been away on vacation since Christmas Day when he preached at the Aso Villa Chapel.

The murder of the late Raheem on Christmas day has sparked reactions from Nigerians from different walks of life, including condolences for the family and prayers for the repose of her soul.

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has written a petition to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, demanding for the arrest and prosecution of the Director General of State Security Services (SSS), Yusuf Magaji Bichi.

Emefiele in the petition written by his lawyer Peter Abang wants the DSS DG to be arrested over his alleged role in a failed plot to frame CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, for terrorism financing.

In the petition dated December 30, 2022 and addressed to the AGF, Emefiele’s lawyer called for a full-scale criminal inquiry into the circumstances Ieading to the failed attempt by the State Security Services (otherwise known as the Department of State Services) to frame the Governor of the CBN on allegations and trumped-up terrorism financing charges.

The petition reads, “In view of the above suit filed by the State Security Services, which the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, the Hon. Justice John Tsoho, delivered its ruling on December 9, 2022 , a certified copy of the Ruling is attached and we are by this letter respectfully requesting that your good offices commence a full scale criminal inquiry into the circumstances Ieading to the failed attempt by the State Security Services (otherwise known as the Department of State Services) to frame the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on allegations and trumped up terrorism financing charges as well as other sundry offences.

“We also request that your offices conduct a thorough investigation and ultimately arrest and prosecute all persons and/or parties connected to the failed rogue operation in the overall interest of Nigeria.

“Note that this letter serves as a notice to commence an action for mandamus to compel your offices to arrest and prosecute all persons and/or parties who are connected in the event that you fail at accede to our request within 7 days from the date of service of this letter to you.”

Naija News reports that Justice John Tsoho, the Chief Judge of the High Court, in declining the motion ex parte, filed by an applicant in the absence of the respondent, said the secret police did not provide any concrete evidence to substantiate its claims that Emefiele was involved in terrorism financing and economic crimes.

It was reported that the move by the DSS was greeted by massive protests by human rights lawyers, civil society groups including the Arewa Youth Consultative Movement, which raised the alarm over an alleged plot by the DSS to frame up Emefiele over alleged terrorism sponsorship against Nigeria.

In another ruling the DSS and Police were stopped by a High Court in Abuja from arresting and detaining Godwin Emefiele.
The court had also restrained the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the CBN, who are listed as 1st, 2nd and 5th defendants.

The presiding judge, Justice MA Hassan gave the order while delivering judgment in a suit marked FCT/HC/CV/GAR/41/2022, filed by the Incorporated Trustees of Forum for Accountability and Good Leadership.

An unmarried friend of mine cried out to me for help after an incident made him discover that he is dating a Kung Fu artist. If not that he is my friend, I will think that it was a made up story.

I was even laughing very hard as he was telling me what happened. He said that she did something that angered him and he slapped her twice.

Another thing about the slangs used in Nigeria is that they sometimes have a different meaning in other countries.

Here are five of them.

1... HOW FAR

In many places "How far" means you're asking about the distance of a place. In Nigeria, it means something else. When someone says, "How far?" they could be asking you, how are you, or about a discussion you guys had earlier, or it could even be used in form of hello.

2... TRENCHES

The dictionary meaning of trenches is a long, narrow ditch or a long, narrow, deep depression in an ocean bed. In Nigeria? Trenches means something totally different.

When someone says they are in the trenches, it means they are living a poor life, one filled with sapa. Trenches is also associated with your life in the past where you didn't have good clothes and it could also refer to rural locations.

3... I AM COMING

In the English language, the phrase "I'm coming" means you're actually moving towards the person you're talking to. In Nigeria, it is something different. When a person says, I'm coming, they could be moving away from you and only mean they will be coming back soon.

4... CHAIRMAN

A chairman is someone who presides at a meeting or heads a committee, board, at least that's what the Collins dictionary says. In Nigeria, that is not what it means.


When a person says that's my chairman, the meaning could range from someone who you always ask for favors, to someone whom you hold in high regard to even someone you're romantically involved with.

5... BREAKFAST

Breakfast is supposed to mean the first meal of the day. More recently, it is used in Nigeria to refer to getting a heartbreak.

So when person A ends a relationship with person B and person B is left heartbroken, it is said that person A has served person B breakfast. Now breakfast in this situation could be hot or cold depending on the level of pain experienced by the receiver.

Resident storms PHCN office to complain about poor power supply only to find them preparing to put on generator (Video)

A resident of Ikeja, Lagos state has shared a discovery he made after visiting the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company, (IKEDC) to lay a complaint.

He wanted to express his grievance with the fact that they have not been getting power supply in their area, however, when he reached the office, he saw that they also did not have power.


While waiting to be attended to, he saw a staff and security official pouring petrol into the officer generator in preparation to put it on and power the office.

He was baffled by what he saw that he decided to record the moment they were pouring the fuel, and he showed the IKEDC signboard.

The hearing in the judicial review challenge against the Foreign Secretary, brought on behalf of separatist leader, Nnamdi Kanu, took place on Tuesday at The Royal Court of Justice London, United Kingdom (UK).

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Kanu is the British-Nigerian leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), an outlawed group that calls for self-determination for the southeast geopolitical zone.
In June 2021, Kanu was arrested at an airport in Nairobi, Kenya by security services and was detained in the East African country. He was then flown on a private plane to Nigeria.

For the past 18 months, he has been held in solitary confinement in a cell at the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters in Abuja. Kanu had reportedly travelled to Kenya on his British passport.

Since his detention in Nigeria, Kanu’s family have been asking the British government to take steps to secure his release on the grounds there was no lawful basis for bringing him to Nigeria, and he was, therefore, subject to what they tag as “extraordinary rendition”.

Kanu’s family has also argued that his ongoing detention is arbitrary. However, the Foreign Secretary has, to date, failed to reach a firm view on whether Kanu was subject to extraordinary rendition.

The family’s legal team brought the challenge on the basis that reaching a firm view is necessary to lawfully determine what steps should be taken to assist Kanu.

During the hearing on Tuesday, Charlotte Kilroy KC, acting for Kanu’s brother, Kingsley ‘Kanunta’ Kanu, highlighted that the IPOB leader has been the victim of a brazen and violent extraordinary rendition.

She stated that this is not the first time that the Nigerian government has tried to harm Kanu.

In September 2017, when he was at his home in Nigeria, the Nigerian military launched a violent raid on his house and killed 28 members of IPOB in the process.

She cited a Nigerian court judgment in which the judge described the Nigerian government’s agents as ‘[setting] out as pythons to terminate the life’ of Kanu.

She then outlined the evidence that Kanu has been subject to extraordinary rendition, noting that the Nigerian government itself has admitted in domestic proceedings that it transferred Kanu to Nigeria without any lawful warrant for arrest nor any extradition process.

Moreover, the Nigerian Court of Appeal ruled that Kanu was subject to extraordinary rendition, a position she said the Federal Court of Nigeria subsequently adopted.

She explained that given the danger Kanu faces from the Muhammadu Buhari administration, it is incumbent on the British government to assist him.

She referred the court to domestic policies that evidence a clear acceptance by the British government that it has a role in protecting its citizens abroad, where there is evidence of a miscarriage of justice, and various instances in which the British government has publicly condemned the actions of other States or called for the release of its citizens where they have been arbitrarily detained abroad.

She argued that the evidence of Kanu’s “rendition” has been clear and overwhelming for some time.

In response, Sir James Eadie KC, acting on behalf of the Foreign Secretary, stated that reaching a firm view on whether Kanu was subject to extraordinary rendition was a matter of foreign policy in which the courts must not interfere.

He added that there was no legal basis for the court to require the Foreign Secretary to reach a view, and that Kanu’s challenge was ‘pointless’.

Following the hearing, the parties are now waiting for the court to provide its ruling.

Reflecting on the hearing, Kingsley Kanu, who brought the challenge, said: “It is well known that the Nigerian courts are heavily influenced by the Nigerian government.

“However, they have been brave enough to take a firm stand and rule that my brother was subject to extraordinary rendition at the hands of the Nigerian government.

“If the Nigerian courts can do this, it is not clear to me what further evidence the British government needs to reach a firm view.

“I hope that the UK court will now require the Foreign Secretary to reach a firm view.”

Shirin Marker, one of the Solicitors representing Kanu said: “Kanu is a British citizen, who has been subject to one of the most serious and egregious breaches of human rights.

“The government’s position in refusing to reach a view on whether he has been subject to extraordinary rendition amounts to a refusal to condemn this breach.

“If the courts allow the British government to take this position, this sets a deeply troubling and dangerous precedent for any British citizen, who might find themselves at risk abroad.”
