Good news. Kudos to Commodore Osinowo. It's nice to hear something positive about someone in the Nigerian military for a change.

This is really absurd, so the fact that he was born in Edo = Dele Giwa was not Yoruba?
That wasn't what I was saying.

Ambrose Folorunsho Alli was born in Ondo, but was Esan.

Dele Giwa was Etsako, regardless of where he was born.

What's place of birth got to do with your life existence? The man called himself a Yoruba man all his life.
Did he?

The man lived his life as a Yoruba man
I don't understand this.

What does this mean?

ekt_bear:
@PhysicsMHD: For me, Yoruba isn't a race, like most people's conception of white, black, asian.

It is an ethnic group. . . a group of people who share a culture. Sort of like how American identity isn't really racial/tribal/etc, but more shared culture and values.

People are free to enter and leave ethnic/cultural groups, in my opinion.

You don't have to be from one of those sub-groups to be Yoruba. Certainly, at least a few of these Saro returnees didn't know much about those sub-groups.
Well, you're entitled to your definition, but I'm pretty sure most of the rest of the world view Yoruba as an ethnic group.

As for the cultural claiming, I might be willing to concede that Dele Giwa was Yoruba if a picture was produced of him wearing an agbada and abeti aja hat  grin but until I see evidence of his cultural Yorubaness, it just seems like empty claiming to me.

^-- The pictures of the camels that this same tourist took look fine though: http://www.caboose.org.uk/b/archives/2005/09/12/revisiting-sokoto/

This from their website:http://www.sokotostate.gov.ng/investement.html

I don't think those cow pictures are likely to be representative. Otherwise, hard to make sense of that and being #2 in livestock production.
Yeah, but camels don't really get emaciated. They store fat in that hump and then leech off it when they are out of food and water. They are also just really tough animals to begin with so they survive well with very little. For a camel to become emaciated would require extremely unusual circumstances.

Also, I was under the impression that Sokoto state did not have much real vegetation.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sokoto_State

They can't even grow crops.

So is that dry brown grass found in the savanna area what their cows eat? And if that stuff is acceptable for cows, how much of it is there in Sokoto?

You're probably right that that isn't a representative picture because I googled around and found this:

https://farm3.static.flickr.com/2541/4277948963_b006753b96.jpg

http://www.flickr.com/photos/73542590@N00/4277948963/

"Sokoto cow

Fulani herdsmen have a deep and almost mystical relationship with their cows. Each cow has a name and responds to it. Cows are named after their mothers. It is taboo for herdsmen to kill their own cows. I spent a while watching this cow and his herder. They appeared to be communicating in a subtle way, "

But it doesn't resolve the question, as this picture only reinforces the idea that Sokoto is a barren area.

Hmm

How do you define "Yoruba", fstranger?

And you, PhysicsMHD?

Similarly, how do you define "American"?
There are Yoruba sub-groups, right? The Oyos, the Ekiti, the Ijebu, the Ifes, etc.

If one falls into one of those groups, then one is Yoruba.

If not, then one is not Yoruba.

If your area doesn't have the vegetation to support cattle, why keep them?! Those cows are starved.

What are they doing to those poor animals?

They're completely fucked up looking.

Look at their bodies!

Are they feeding them dirt?

This is my first time seeing so much bone and rib through the skin of any animal.

Why all this claiming? What value does it add to you or your group? The man was Etsako. You think he spoke only Yoruba and not Etsako?

You dont get it, do you?

He worked all his life with Yoruba people. He was made in the SW. He became a man in the SW. After his death, where were his people? We stood by him when he was alive, we fought for him in death, and when he was no more, the Yorubas took great care of his family. We will never forget him.

Anyway, that article did not add anything of value to your point.
Nah.

You cant choose where you are born, but who you are and the people you choose to associate with are strictly within the confines of an individual's free-will.

Dele Giwa is Yoruba, culturally, educationally, mentally, and psychologically. Its like saying Dele Momodu is Edo, really?
He associated with his people (Etsako) as well:

This is what I dont get what does buhari concern him? Stick to the things youve been calling for federalism, resource control, regional govt etc.

GEJ being president has blinded these guys.

Trust before you know it GEJ will no longer be president and Niger delta still wont have federalism.

He should be asking Southerners to leave the north and develop their own region, obviously Nigeria is not one. That has nothing to do with Buhari, it has been going on before buhari!
I have to agree.

Most people would probably still opt for regular housing, but for poorer people, this would be a huge step up from the shanty houses and shacks you see in every Nigerian city and by the roadside.

PoliticsRe: Will You Fight For You And Your Future? Nigeria's Oil Bill Faces Major Obstacles by PhysicsMHD(m): 11:19pm On Apr 29, 2011
The NNPC, according to the U.S. strategic consultancy Stratfor, "is widely regarded as a corrupt and ineffective organization that enables a broad patronage network" that's closely linked to the country's volatile politics "with decisive power vested in the president.

"Competition for ever-greater allocations of oil revenue has created an artificial reliance on the central government, with the NNPC serving as the chief enabler.

"Hence, any attempt to restructure the NNPC will affect the country to its core, impacting entrenched political power bases as well as average Nigerians."

The PIB, considered the most ambitious attempt yet to reform Nigeria's oil industry, is intended to create a comprehensive legal framework for the oil and gas industry. Through it, the government seeks to attain several important objectives, primarily increasing state revenues by increasing taxes on international companies, freeing the NNPC from dependence on federal funding, deregulating the downstream sector and developing gas production.

"At the core of the rot in the oil industry is the NNPC, the state oil company, which has become a byword for corruption and inertia," Goldman observed in January analysis in the Financial Times.

"Oil production has been stagnant … for a decade; vast reserves of natural gas are for the most part either wasted or unexploited."

Goldman said Nigeria's "toxic political culture dominated by vested interests" was snarling the PIB.

Yeah, I've noticed this attitude coming from SOME Ethiopians and Somalis, its laughable to me. Even in college, the Ethiopians broke away from the African Students Association (ASA) to form the ESA. Personally, I remind them that just because they came to America on refugee status, does not mean that they can mouth off to me, and I close by reminding them that we fed them and sent them aid throughout the 90's when they were starving. That usually does the trick.
Nigeria sent them aid? undecided
