ekt_bear: So roughly $800 mil/year? So ~$4-5 per person/year? Seems high, no? How much do other countries spend to collect this information, per person/year?
This stuff is typically expensive:

PoliticsRe: Why Less Northerners On Nairaland? by PhysicsQED(m): 5:50am On Sep 20, 2012
There's a forum called kanoonline that I came across a while back. It's not that active, but there are definitely more Northerners posting there than there are posting on the politics and other non-religious sections of nairaland:

Some interesting threads:

They definitely talk about politics (local, national, and international) on that forum and have other interesting discussions like we do here, but it's not as active as nairaland and has nowhere near as many members. The last post on that forum was in July of 2012 so I don't think it is that active right now though.
CultureRe: Dimka: A Teacher We Must Learn From by PhysicsQED(m): 3:38am On Sep 20, 2012
I meant the poster dimka. It seems that back in nairaland's early days one could be banned merely for "bad belle" and "attacks" and "counterattacks," which is funny to me. I wanted to know who this poster was and what his offense was and I upped the thread in case anyone who joined nairaland much earlier knew.

lol @ how people are always "storming" places. Is it necessary that one write at least one article claiming someone "stormed" a place before one is considered a real member of the Nigerian media?

PoliticsRe: FG To Stop Funding Pilgrimages by PhysicsQED(m): 9:51pm On Sep 19, 2012
I would have applauded this, but I didn't see any mention in there of the hajj. There should be no monetary support whatsoever for the hajj from any sources other than by taxing the Muslims who want to undertake the hajj in a certain state or by the Muslims in a certain state pooling their money together to sponsor other Muslims. Until the government also stops funding the hajj this is only a partial attempt at doing right.
Christianity EtcRe: Your Thoughts On Mountain Of Fire And Miracles Church by PhysicsQED(m): 9:33pm On Sep 19, 2012
Evil Brain: I still remember the first time I set foot in an MFM church. It was way back in 1996 or '97, I was dragged to their headquarters in Akoka by my momsi who had heard about them from one of her born-again friends.

One woman gave a very funny testimony. She was in a bus traveling from Lagos to Ibadan when "the holy spirit" told her that the bus was going to have an accident. So she started praying: "Every spirit of motor accident, fall down and die!" From there, she started praying "machine-gun prayer": DIE! DIE!! DIE!!!. The other soon passengers started complaining that who is this person that is shouting "DIE, DIE" in a bus? They all ganged up on her and made her keep quiet.

The bus then had an accident and somersaulted several times. I'll never forget the woman's next words: "We had accident and notin happened to me. But all the people saying I should stop shouting Die, Die, they rushed them to mortuary. PRAAIISE THE LOOORD!!!"

The MFM crowd shouted hallelujah.

True story, I swear.
Wow. That's messed up.

Foreign AffairsRe: Warships In Persian Gulf As Israel Prepares For Iranian Strike by PhysicsQED(m):
ocelot2006: This proposed air strike against Iran's nuclear site is not going to happen for a number of reasons:
1)The Iranians have learnt lessons from the 1980s airstrike against Iraq's Orsika nuclear reactor. That's why the current facilities are spread out across Iran and heavily protected.
2)As much as Iran's eastern neighbors are weary of it, I seriously doubt they'll grant Isreal access to their airspace. They do that, and they automatically lose legitimacy in the eyes of their people.
3)The Iranians may not have the capabilities to fully block the narrow strait of Homuz. But they can definitely make it very expensive for the West's economy. All they need to do is mine the strait, and undermine Western interest in both Oil-rich Iraq and Afghanistan.
4)An airstrike will NOT end the program, but delay it abit longer. And there's the strong possibility of it finally pushing the Iranians to acquire nukes and the people to rally behind the current theocratic leadership.
Well said.

Netanyahu is just getting fidgety over the shift in the balance of power in the region and he wants to force the U.S. to take action, but there's not really any military offensive that should be taken. The pressure should remain diplomatic and economic.

PoliticsRe: Kano Town Was Founded By An Igbo Trader by PhysicsQED(m): 6:04am On Sep 19, 2012
Dudu_Negro: What does our Sapele mean?
"SAPELE which is today one of the most important industrial port towns in the Western Region of Nigeria was a small village belonging to the people of Okpe in Urhobo country. Sapele, Sapoli, and Sapeli, are the European rendering of the Okpe name of the village which is Urhiapele or Urhuapele. The hinterland Urhobo call it Isapele and the Itsekiri people generally call it Usapele, both obviously after the European rendering. Urhiapele or Urhuapele is a combination of two Urhobo words – Urhie or Urho and Apele. Urhie or Urho means a river or a stream, and Apele is a name of a Juju of the Okpe owners of the village. Urhiapele or Urhuapele therefore means the “River or the stream of Apele."

(This article is from 1960, hence the use of the term 'juju.')
PoliticsRe: Kano Town Was Founded By An Igbo Trader by PhysicsQED(m): 5:49am On Sep 19, 2012
@ Prof Corruption & Eko Ile

The author of the statement claiming the town was founded by a Mr. Okonkwo was Danjuma Azemobo Musa, an Afenmai (northern Edo) Muslim living in the North. You can look him up and find his facebook page to see who he is.
PoliticsRe: Kano Town Was Founded By An Igbo Trader by PhysicsQED(m): 5:45am On Sep 19, 2012
Dudu_Negro: Kwankwaso in Hausa means the lower back. Its use in the case of a village could signify perhaps a junction or cross point serving as important trade route.......or economic "backbone" .

On a different note, now that we are talking bout settlements, I have often wondered how SAPELO Island in coastal Georgia, America came to be. Could it be linked to the Itsekiris? I once listened to a taped conversation in Gitche language (coastal Carolina, Georgia, Florida descendants of slaves) which no one understood but I could make up many words out of it. It was a recordings of slaves narrations.
Thanks for the explanation.

On Sapelo, I don't know how the name of that island came about. I'd have to look into that, but on the surface it does seem possible that there's some kind of Delta connection there.

PoliticsRe: Steer Clear Of Orient Petroleum, Anambra Youths Warn Kogi, Enugu States by PhysicsQED(m): 10:50pm On Sep 18, 2012
billante: You guys should stop being childish for once and look at dis issue critical and mature! Even obi is being childish about this!
Am anambarian to start with and after studing dis issue for a some time now, in all honesty these are d facts I have gotten from d whole issue.

1. Orient petrolume was given an oil prospecting license by fG that covers the almost d whole anambra basin, this basin covers anambra enugu kogi delta and edo states.

2.Orient is fixing a modula refinery at aguleri-otu which is in anambra state (not yet completed)

3.Orient has been drilling oil wells all over d basin i mentioned above...they are currently working on five wells 2 in anambra state 2 in enugu state and 1 in ibaji in kogi state.

4. The one dat is presently produce about 2000 barrels of oil daily is the one in ibaji in kogi state, the other wells are still being explored but haven't started gushing out crude oil.

5.Orient is currently storing these oil produce in d ibaji oil well in barges at d banks of d anambra river in anticipation of refining them once the modular refinery they are fixing in aguleri-otu is completed, they are also planning to start selling d oil if more are produced from other wells dat are being currently explored.

From d facts I listed above you can honestly without ethnic baised mind say that anambra is not yet an oil producing state! Kogi state is,
Anambra and enugu state will soon be cause there are oil in their wells but they are still being worked on to start producing.

So in tecnical terms the president declared the wrong state an oil producing state on the 30 august 2012... for the argument that because anambra people/govt has being the only people that has invested billions in orient doesn't make them oil producing yet, they will be but not yet! Another thing is that because you help your landlord renovate or reconstruct his house doesn't make u the owner of d house.

Oil is on d exclusive right of the federal govt and 13% derivation fund of d 2000 barrels being produced in ibaji oil well should rightly be paid to kogi, and not forgeting, kogi should have being the one declared oil producing state by the president on the 30th aug.....the only money dat anambra should be getting from the ibaji oil well is the percentage profit they are entitled to through their investment in orient petrolume. Because orient is suppose to be getting 45% or 55% of d oil sales depending on the oil sharing plan they entered with the federal govt.

Solution:

Whether anambra like it or not, kogi state is the owner of d oil being currently produced now and are entitiled to 13% derivation fund and should also be decalared oil producing state whether they have invested in orient or not....a simple case is, bayelsa is entitiled to oil being produced in their land and recieves money without investing one kobo in agip or shell.
Hmmm. . .interesting post. So how are people privy to what is or isn't being currently produced at certain wells at the moment? Have people been asking Orient directly or did people go to the different oil wells and inspect what was going on there themselves?

Samuel Okoye (Nigeria's first astronomy professor) was a Carnegie Foundation Fellow at Cambridge in the 60s. I know that's a different thing, but you get the point - these kind of achievements aren't exclusive to any ethnicity.

shymexx: Not really... She looks proper light skinned, and apart from her broad nose - her features aren't really African..

Is she mixed race?
All the mini bios of her online say she was born in the Congo to Nigerian parents, so no, she wouldn't be mixed.

On her features, I guess we just disagree then. Her features look African to me.

shymexx: Light skinned, thin lips, and size 0...

We complain about lack of representation of black beauty in the media yet we judge black beauty based on other cultures..

Africans have big bones and our food contains more carbohydrates...
I don't think Oyebade has thin lips though.
CelebritiesRe: Toolz Flaunts Curves In Promo Shots For Her Website by PhysicsQED(m): 9:19pm On Sep 18, 2012
shymexx: To be honest, Oyebade represents the European/Caucasian standard of beauty...
In terms of her body, probably. In terms of her face, she might be paler/yellow but her features are just as African as Toolz' features.

Oyebade is a like a 7 at most facially and a 5 for her body...

Toolz is 6 facially and 8.5 body wise...

I know what you're talking about as far as the mouth, but even with that, I think she's still good looking and better looking than Toolz.
CelebritiesRe: Toolz Flaunts Curves In Promo Shots For Her Website by PhysicsQED(m): 8:42pm On Sep 18, 2012
shymexx: Toolz is better looking than the other chic... The Oyebade chic is basic - I see the 'Oyebades' of this world everyday, but there aren't many chics with Toolz' body out there...
Sagamite: I would put both their faces on par - average.

Bodywise, Toolz will body slam her. No contest in that department.

Toolz all day, every day.
Alright, well I think one woman is significantly better looking (facially) than the other and like I said, I'd go with looks first, but that's just me. I can understand how some would prefer Toolz though.

Already did. It was good, although not really amazing or anything. I liked "Daughters" and "You Wouldn't Understand" especially. I don't know why he left "Roses" and "Where's the Love" off the regular version of the album though. I think people who got the regular version kind of got cheated.
