"major" is not a Nigerian term; it is a Yankee term.

maybe the girl thought you were referring to major, as in being a major in the military, and that she will pursue that path subsequent to finishing her BSc.

After he asked her what is her "course of study" she responded by saying linguistic relations.

Nevertheless, in light of the context in which the poster asked the girl, she sounds like a dumb biatch for not understanding what the guy meant by "what is your discipline?"

Poster too is a wannabe for using American terms within the context of a Nigerian conversation. He probably heard the word "major" used on a youtube video or on an American movie he watched on DSTV.

At some point in time,  A.K.A  Prior to the guy knowing whether she's "playing hard to get" or rejecting.

You even made the point yourself:
He knows which term to use on the girl, only after she tries "to link up with him".
Pretty much what the guys are saying. And this playing hard to get behavior is not comprehensible to a rational human being, only comprehensible to Naija women, especially Yoruba girls.

Some Naija girls think that it is the right thing to do, which may be 50 years ago. But some of these girls forget it is 2011, and the girls who don't play hard to get and who are down to earth are the ones meeting men and getting married. Playing hard to get will only make you lose a guy you cherish, because that guy may not be the one who will continue kissing your arse until you say yes, or you may never see him again to later make a move on him. Bottom line, playing hard to get is pure stupidity lunacy.

BABE!:
Exactly my point. At some point in time, in a guy's dictionary, those two terms are interchangable.

Some females find joy and happiness in making guys look desperate.

There are classier and more subtle ways to form, besides insulting and being impolite. Not everyone is classy, so you should understand.
it is still not interchangeable. A reasonable girl who rejects a guy does not come back to try and talk to the guy. A girl who plays hard to get forms and acts as though she is trying to reject the guy, and when the guy walks away she tries to holla at him or she later agrees when if the guy is persistent.

All you can do is judge me. I don't care to be the nigerian standards. I will not marry 100 men. Only one. I can only be me and that is enough. Most Nigerian men want women that shout  out Jesus and wear weaves. I don't do any of that. If I voice my opinion that means I'm older than 30. Funny logic.
Merge, I am not trying to judge you, but I think I know what your problem is. You have Nigerian parents who are either from the village or are illiterates, and you have never been exposed to a variety of Nigerian people. Your parents were fortunate to get an American visa or won a lottery and stayed in America. You grow up in an environment where you suffered from identity crisis, not knowing whether to embrace your parents village or illiterate way of life or your American way of life. Your parents did not acculture you properly to Nigerian customs and practices; and if they did, it was to the village or archaic way of life. You now fear that the average Nigerian man will be like your village father. You have probably never been to Nigeria before; and even if you have, your parents took you straight to the village, where you were exposed only to palmwine tappers. You now know think you are on some mysterious higher level than Nigerian men because you were raised in Yankee. I have seen many girls like you. Eya? Pele. Sorry sorry oooooo

Prince

Actually, your explaination/terminologies are applicable to a female's point of view.

As a guy, Rejection is the same as Playing hard to get. Coz, at the end of the day, the guy is thinking "This chick, doesn't like me, so she's rejecting me".

The guy wouldn't know that he likes her if she's forming.
Yea, but a guy knows the girl is playing hard to get if the girl ignores after she acts as if she is not interested, then the same girl who had acted as if she is not interested now thereafter tries to link up with guy. Or the guy is persistent and the girl now accepts his advances and wants to marry him. Therein lies the question: why all the forming and attitude in the first place when she is genuinely interested?

Nice-- That's Neat!

You'll get your shoes. No jokes.

Do I play hard to get?  Yh, sometimes. 97% of that time, I don't like the guy, so you can't really call it playing hard to get--I just don't like him.
You lads are confusing rejection with playing hard to get. Playing hard to get means you like the guy but are still forming as if you don't like him, sometimes to the extent of being impolite to him. Rejection on the other hand means you do not like the guy, have no intent whatsoever to engage him, and you respectfully and maturely decline his advances.

I have never rejected any guy like an animal. I'm fairly nice about it. I don't know where you got that from. I have never supported such behavior.  Seriously, I'm not easily impressed by anybody. Plus I don't like cocky/arrogant guys. I'm not like  the women you meet that jump on a guy because of his money or whatever.
I applaud you for claiming to not reject guys like animals, unlike how some other Naija girls do. Just as people do not easily impress you, a lot of girls do not easily impress me, for I am insanely picky about the type of girls I approach, much less date. One thing I cannot tolerate is a girl with a nasty attitude. That is the deal breaker for me. Even if she shows me a nasty attitude, I will dispose of her and will bounce, even if she comes back to beg me later on.

You seem to be arrogant yourself, so it is paradoxical that you do not like cocky, arrogant guys. And a guy who is confident does not necessarily mean that he is cocky. And for your info, I am yet to meet a girl who claims that she is easily impressed by a guy's money or whatever. At the end of the day, there has to be something that attracts you to a guy--looks, money, intelligence, personality, style, manner of dressing, eloquence, etc.

If none of those things impress you, then maybe you are a bicurious female. lol

Merge,

I know you can stay here for as long as you want; you cannot get enough of us, so you are going no where. However, playing hard to get does not mean that the lady does not want the guy; it just means that the lady thinks that she has to play to hard to get for no apparent logical reason.

If a girl does not want a guy, there are matured ways of rejecting a guy, and she does not have to act like an animal to do so. And when a lady plays hard to get, she internally wants the guy but feels she has to play hard to get just because she think it is the right thing to do, and she will go home and start crying at night when the guy abandons her.

You would lick my feet if you met me in person, for I am the type of dude who will put you in your place. I am the guy you dream about all day. Trust me, I know.

at the end of the day, some men also have their share of the blame. These men keep approaching these ugly girls or dealing with their playing hard to get. If men abandoned all these women who are playing hard to get, especially the ugly ones, these girls will learn the hard way. at least that is the way it is here in Yankee, where you have options.

In Naija just go for the down to earth chicks and ignore these girls who play hard to get; let them die childless or husbandlesss or go to a sperm bank to buy sperm. It is not by force.

Omoba, ori e pe! Exactly what I meant. The moderator modified my question actually. If the original statement had not be so starkly modified, my message would probably have been clearer. The moderator may have done that to avoid trouble, because I was particular about the Yorubas' female yabbing attitude especially.
ose gan. Yoruba girls are insanely guilty of making shakara when a stranger approaches them, absent any flashing of money by that stranger. Yoruba girls especially feel that it is necessary to make shakara or sometimes have an attitude for no logical or justifiable reason that is comprehensible to a rational human being; I guess they feel not displaying an attitude makes them feel less of a woman (ori won ti daru).

Another game that especially Yoruba girls play is beyond me. Say Kunle, who is a stranger who has not flashed any money, approaches Bisi in a neutral environment, Bisi will most likely play shakara and yanga, even though in Bisi's heart, she is attracted to Kunle and Kunle meets all the initial criteria in a partner she is seeking.

Same facts above, but this time around, say Bisi's friend introduces Kunle to Bisi, and says that Kunle is a Doctor who is loaded, you will see how Bisi will now open her nyansh ayakata for Kunle to tear, and how she will want to marry Kunle within the second week of meeting him.

The problem with especially Yoruba girls is that they do not have one ounce of rationality in their brain. Had they did, a girl like Bisi above will take time to talk to Kunle, even though he is a stranger who has not flashed money, and find out what he is about without the attitude, yanga, and shakara.

Wallie:
So you walk in on someone standing over a dead body holding a bloody knife. Is the person guilty of murder?

It is the prosecutor’s job to prove that the person is guilty of murder. If he his guilty, was it premeditated (1st degree murder), accidental, or in self defense? Is there another plausible reason the guy is holding the knife? Could he have walked into a room seeing the deceased stabbed and he tried to help by removing the knife?
I am glad you explained it to them. Lawyers don't lie, and the consequences for lying can be dire. In America, for example, a lawyer who has been convicted of a crime involving dishonesty may be (and most likely will) denied admission to a state bar by the Supreme Court of the state in which the lawyer seeks admission. The primary reason is that lawyers are considered officers of the court and should therefore be held to the highest standards of honesty.

Also, are you a lawyer in Yankee? I am also a lawyer here in Yankee, too. Let me know maybe we can network. I focus on all areas of intellectual property law, particularly patent procurement and litigation, immigration law, and energy law. I will do personal injury if the injuries are severe enough that will provide for a large contingent fee, and liability of defendant is almost clear.
RomanceRe: Why Do Nigerian Women Like To Play Hard To Get? by Princek12(m): 1:31pm On Aug 26, 2011
Maybe the poster means that Nigerian girls play hard to get because of the initial shakara and yanga they normally when a guy approaches them. Fine, Naija girls will open their legs ayakata within a heart's beat when they know you are a rich guy, but the problem with Naija girls is that when you are a stranger they normally play shakara and yanga.

But when they know your levels, they are dirt cheap like a recharge card or a bottle of Guinness. Most of Naija girls' problem is their attitude towards strangers who have not flashed any money--all the shakara and forming. That stranger may be rich as hell, too, and have his poo together. But when you flash that money, chei, see as Naija chikalas will start chasing after you like police and thief.

Just put yourself in the shoes of the girl and try to think about it and you will realize that it is very rational.
In the western world, many women date just to date or have fun. in that sense, they will date any guy that catch their fancy.
for Nigerian women, they date in order to eventually get married. not to be used for a ride. consequently, the criteria is different.

next!
so do you mean playing hard to get will Nigerian women get married? how come they are all in churches at age 33 and up praying for a husband after playing hard to get?

bottom line is you have to date multiple people before you eventually find the right fit for you. dating is a trial and error situation.

if you dislike the attention you are receiving because of your huge backside, go and see a plastic surgeon and have them removed. then come back to Nairaland and rant about the lack (or diminished) attention you are now receiving from men. Why do you women complain for God's sake? God has given you an asset that other women with flat yansh pay sometimes tens of thousands of dollars to have a butt augmentation, yet you are here lamenting about having a huge butt.

Do you want to experience how life may be hard if you had a flat butt? Ask the legions of Naija women with flat butts, single or married, and they will tell you how life has been hard. That is why the husbands of flat nyansh women cheat on them with a girl with a big butt.

moral of the story is that crave the attention and use as means to select the guy who is good for you. Imagine you were not getting attention from men, how will you find a large selection of guys from whom to choose?

very funny! I am not thirsty for kwashiokor, flat-yansh, worwor looking girls. My point is that you girls talk about how we bash Naija women, and my point is that there is no bashing going. We are mainly speaking the truth.

The girls said they did not post their pictures because they did not want to disclose their identity, and I said you can always post pictures in which your face has been blurred or post regular pictures that show your body, not your face.

I guess the majority of girls know themselves that their body is too kwashiokor, so they have refused to post pics. I even said that they can find pics of other Naija girls online and post it. But majority of those girls have kwashiokor bodies, too. No one has thus far proved me wrong.

I was saddened when I read that Mercy Johnson is one of the sexiest girls and Omotola are among the sexiest girls in Nollywood. If you do the math and extrapolate the sexiness of the average Naija girl, it is not looking good. In Yankee, Omotola or Mercy Johnson don't even look as good as a regular girl in the projects.
