Of course, Igbos are more populous than Yorubas. Every non politicized ethnic group estimation done by the British showed that.

Unless the Yorubas expected that their genocidal intent on us during the Biafran war had given then the upper hand, which it didn't, as Ndiigbo had since replaced the children lost during the war immediately post war, then I see no need for this thread.

Except for here in the UK. You'll think you're in Ibadan in certain parts of south London. Peckham na Ijebu central.

La la la... I'm not in any mood to listen. Biafra is the 5 Igbo states. Any long story is not going to change that. grin tongue

But you're right though about current ethnic identity. Things change over time. I really don't care, really, I just want successful black countries
I don't care if you're not in the mood. Don't come online and post rubbish without expecting people to comment.

I'm Igbo and I'm not nuts for Biafra and I don't claim minorities and force them to side with the "Igbo nation." I can live with an improved one Nigeria. But you're chatting some serious bull if you're discounting the western Igbo and some Anambra communities because of ancestral roots. It's common knowledge that the Igbo don't have any established migratory pattern like other tribes do and we've absorbed a lot of original outsiders into what's now a more homogeneous Igbo community. Having ancient Bini roots doesn't change that.

What about the select Delta Igbos that claim descent from Nri? Are they less Igbo than Nsukka and Enugu-Ezike people of Igala and Idoma origin because their territory is separated from the "core East" by the river Niger?

I know I will get insulted for this, but I will say it anyway.
If Ndi-Igbo want their own country, it should be limited to Anambra (minus Onitsha*), Enugu, Imo, Abia, and Ebonyi.

Yes, people will say: what of Anioma in Delta (from Ika to Aniocha, Oshimili down to Ndokwa)? Igbos are not indigenous to these areas, though there has been migration and settlement over the last 2 centuries. Although I know some misguided Anioma people who consider themselves Igbo (and Igbos claim it), the region is not what Ndi-Igbo call core-Igbo. What about Rivers and Akwa-Ibom? Cross River and Bayelsa nko? Well, Igbos are not indigenous to these states either.

*Onitsha has its origins from Bini people, but like Lagos, and Asaba, Igbos are claiming it as theirs (or at best, no-man's land). Claiming where you migrated to as your own is bad form, especially when those you met are still around. What of all the industry built in Onitsha? Because we don't want to fight too much, we'll let you keep Onitsha since Benin hasn't exerted its influence or developed it since time immemorial.

And worse is trying to misguide people on their heritage so they will be the critical mass for your purposes.

Fire away, I wore my flame-retardent underwear today tongue
You were just about close to making sense in that submission until you went about declaiming Delta Igbo and Onitsha people. I hope you know that most Nsukka Igbo are ancestrally Igala and there’s other communities in Enugu State bordering with Benue that have absorbed people of not Just Igala but also Idoma stock and you’ll even see a handful of them with Idoma surnames like Omege. That doesn’t stop them being Igbo today. Same goes for Aro people and other peripheral Igbos on the southern fringes of Abia state that border with Akwa Ibom that have Calabar roots but are Igbo today. Ancestral origins don’t come into current ethnic identity.

can you say Delta state is a Majorly Igbo state?
Yes, I can. Not majority but majorly. Delta is also majorly Urhobo, and the same goes for Rivers and Kalabari. Note that I said majorly, not majority.

YonkijiSappo:
How can Ikwerre constitute over half of Rivers state? Are you familiar with the demographics of rivers state at all?
Rivers state has Igbos, Ogonis, and Ijaws as majority groups. With smaller groups accross the state as well as Immigrant groups such as Ibibios, Yorubas, Hausas, Urhobos, Edos, Middle belt tribes etc

This was the 2011 estimated population of each of those LGAs

PHLGA - 638,360
Obio Akpor - 548,030

(Mind You, PHLGA and Obio Akpor is a Potpourri of South South tribes and various other groups from accross Nigeria, but I will give Igbos 100% there for the sake of argument)

Oyigbo - 148,560

Opubo-Nkoro is not an Igbo Local government but mixed. But let me give it to you

Opobo-Nkoro - 181,150

Andoni is not an Igbo LGA, and i won't give you that.

Bonny is an Ijaw LGA with some Igbo elements - I will once again give you that

Bonny - 254,000
Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni - 335,790
Ikwerre - 223,940
Etche - 296,250
Omumma - 118,990

TOTAL = 2,745,070

Out of an estimated 2011 Rivers population of 6,162,100

How in the world is a 44.5% a majority? even with all the LG additions I did and the assumtion that PHLGA and Obio are 100% Igbo.
Mind you, in reality, the Igbo population of rivers would be closer to 2.1million or 34.5%, (I added Emohua for u. An Ikweere LGA that you didn't include among the igbo lgas). A similar proportion to their share of population in Delta state.

This number is around the same population of Yorubas in Kwara.
Did I say majority or majorly?

Tai
Gokana

Ikwerres alone constitute over half of said state. Factor in Ogbas, Etches, Omumas, etc., and you'll get your answer.

I think Igbos could also be up to 1 million in Rivers and Kano states too apart from Delta and Lagos. Infact in Rivers and Delta some of the indigenous groups identify as Igbos let alone the population of Igbo settlers in these places.
So, Igbos, both indigenes and non indigenes in Rivers and Delta run into Millions. Other parts of the SS like Edo, Akwa Ibom also have large igbo populations, even in middlebelt areas like Jos-Plateau, Abuja and neighbouring parts of Abuja like Nasarawa and Niger has so much Igbos too.
I'm not surprised about Rivers given it's a majorly Igbo state..

Ya I agree with you except that Igboid diversion would probably be the earliest or first given the complexity of Igbo compared to the more easier Yoruba. cheesy

Igbo and Yoruba are definitely related. I also see the usage of 'o' in both languages as pronouns. For example, he/she has come in Igbo would be 'o biala', which would be similar in Yoruba too.

O na-abia - he/she is coming.

Please give us some examples of similar usages in Yoruba starting with the 'o' pronoun.
What do you think about Nigerians using 'o' as a suffix (e.g., okay o)? Which tribe do you think can lay claim to that one?

I've read recently that Fulani and Hausa people number 19 and 29 people in Nigeria respectively. Igbos have been ranked at anywhere from 32 to 40 million and, while I'm not saying whether the Yoruba population is higher than the Igbo one, can you honestly say that you're not ranking Igbo at no. 3 just to spite Igbos, AkanPhysicist?
