GMBuhari:Abia is ever scarcely in the news for the wrong reasons. However, if you check the news you will see that most is due to state government failure. |
Remimadrid1:This is not a dick measuring exercise please. The list is all over the internet, and a simple Google search will give you the answer you need. Thank you! |
aristocrazzy:I cry each time I travel to Aba and see great potentials yet to be harnessed. Abia people are sitting on top of gold mine without knowing it. A forward thinking governor is what Abia state needs to become a great state. It's even shocking that what is required is just the political will, responsibility and passion to turn the state around massively. For God's sake this is not rocket science!! |
Igbos are known to be capitalists and has often been classified as being among the world's 5 most advanced ethnicities alongside the Chinese, Indians, Jews and Germans. Just like these other aforementioned groups, Igbos now control or influence commerce in many areas of Sub-Saharan Africa and beyond. Their cities of Aba and Onitsha have traditionally been regarded as home to some of the largest markets in Africa. However, the problem now is that these markets have largely remained the way they were decades ago. Today, anyone who visits Ariaria will be disgusted at the filth, bad roads, flooding etc. that will assault them. Traders often lose lots of money each time the market gets flooded, and it happens quite often especially during the rainy season. The world has evolved and commerce has become a huge money spinner, especially when it is combined with tourism. Dubai is a model example of this. However, the IGR of Aba has remained appallingly low, not necessarily because the people don't pay tax but but because of cartels that rip-off such monies due to irregularities in tax collection. Abia state government should as a matter of urgency, go into partnership with developers to build the world's largest mall that will replace the sordid Ariaria market. This is a hugely bankable project and investors would be falling over themselves to be involved. Recently, Shell built a dedicated gas pipeline to Ariaria and this would help to make the building of these malls significantly cheaper to maintain and thus make its rent affordable for most traders. The benefits of having such very large malls in Aba will be enormous and it will change the fortunes of the state. Such benefits include: 1. Huge foriegn direct investments will flood into the state, especially from China, India, Japan, S.A, E.U and America. They will come in the form of companies opening assembly plants that will take advantage of such modernized large markets. This is what Dubai has done, and we have the capacity to replicate it here. Even if we are able to get 10% of the sort of investments that has gone to Dubai, Abia will automatically become a very rich state. 2. Increased patronage; Ariaria used to attract buyers from all over Nigeria and as far as Cameroun, Ghana, Senegal, Niger etc. Many of such people have stopped coming due to the disorganized nature of the market. However, not only will all these people return, Ariaria will now be able to attract buyers from all over Africa. 3. Increased government revenue; imagine when Aba has 10 very large malls that will contain an average of 20,000 shops each or 20 large malls of 10,000 shops each. The government will be able to ensure that 100% of the traders are captured in its tax drive and no cartel will defraud it since government knows the exact number of tax payers and can easily monitor compliance. 4. Increase in employment generation; lots of our graduates see trading as a vocation that is demeaning. This is due to the filthy environment where trading takes place. The market roads are muddy and flooded, gutters crisscross people's shops, leaky roofs etc. However, once these large malls are used to replace such dirty markets, many graduates will gladly go into trading and they will bring modern innovations too. 5. Aesthetics; Aba has gained a notoreity as a filty place and this is directly due to the proliferation of all these dingy markets that are found all over the city. Aba is a naturally well planned gridiron city. Once these unsightly markets are replaced with modern malls, the aesthetics of the city will be greatly enhanced and more people will desire to live in the city. I can go on to list several other benefits but lack of space won't allow me. We Igbos don't know the gold we have in our hands by being in control of commerce in Nigeria because it has far greater potentials than crude oil and agriculture. Dubai has no oil but it is richer than the other Emirates in UAE that has oil as well as other oil rich countries. Okezie Ikpeazu should muster the courage and political will to forever change the dynamics of Aba and he will always be remembered. Rochas was able to demolish the two biggest markets in Owerri and relocate the traders, and heaven did not fall. So, Ikpeazu too can demolish Ariaria as well as other dirty markets in Aba and replace them with massive malls. Lalasticala please do Aba a favour by moving this piece to the front page so it can be brought to Okezie Ikpeazu's attention. |

So Orji Uzor is now a monk that all Nigerian politicians now go to his house on pilgrimage ![]() |
Sensational headline. Ebonyi may be educational less developed relative to other SE states but it's not as bad as it is being portrayed. I think the problem is structural and involves many years of being neglected which was worsened by the people largely being less ambitious in pursuing excellence in critical areas such as education, business, vocations etc. and equally a dearth of role models the people can look up to that will motivate them into becoming successful. All SE states have areas of comparative advantage where they excel at but Ebonyi is lacking in that aspect. Agriculture and solid minerals is where they would have had an edge but it's still mostly practiced at subsistence level. Umahi is already doing a good job of providing infrastructure but he should do more by attracting high employment generating industries to harness its agriculture and solid minerals. Up till this moment, Ibeto cement that can employ thousands of Ebonyi people is still not functional. |

iPresh4s:What's your point exactly? If this is how the worst areas of Asaba is, then the city far above average, at least by Nigerian standard. Lagos and Abuja have places that are far worse than this, even Johannesburg has such places. Rubbish and ingredients! |
post=90885416:One thing I like about Igbo cities is their serenity. See how peaceful Asaba looks with everywhere looking fresh and beautiful unlike those waste areas that is always looking dusty with brown roofs. I know call anybody name o ![]() |
Akinboboz:Another NFA on the beat. Your drug Lord is doing a great job or can't you see how he has reduced a former capital and a country's financial hub to a sh!thole, and people like this guy can't stop singing his praises. Iwu ozu wuru awu ![]() |

SW has degenerated to the level of 1940's India. WTF, one cup of garri for each household!? Oh my God, the whole state should be declared an IDP camp already ![]() |
gawu1:Are you that uninformed!? Shell recently built a gas pipeline all the way from Imo state to Lagos. Areas around Ohaji, Oguta, Asa, Obigbo etc. all in Igboland are where Nigeria has its largest onshore reserves of gas, not to talk of the ones in Delta North as well as Anambra that is yet to be exploited. Look at the type of educated people we have in Nigeria today, asking questions a secondary school student wouldn't even ask. SMH! |
DenreleDave:I can get you lands in any part of Owerri, anytime any day. Just tell me the area you want it and I will inform you of available ones, that's if you're serious anyway. At least, this will help to disabuse the minds of your people who always ignorantly say that Igbos don't sell lands to Yorubas. I have never met any seller who had such mindset since all the years I have been selling lands in Owerri. So, put your money where your mouth is! |
Igboid:The Yorubas desire to have Illorin and the surrounding back but they are so afraid and has given up out of fear. Some of their Muslims wouldn't mind teaming up with the caliphate to sabotage them. If their own people can sabotage and frustrate their own well-being and progress, is it Igbos or other Southerners that they won't betray. Yes, granted that the Ijaw appology wasn't sincere, in the sense that their motivating factor was GEJ's reelection, some of their people have realized the errors of their parents. I do encounter them on Facebook. What Amaechi is trying to do is nonsense and should be resisted by all Igbos. Ikwerre people have not hidden their denial of being Igbo. They have always used every opportunity to show it to the world that they are not Igbos. Their Ogbakor Ikwerre is a group that makes Igbophobia an agenda. How can they now start pushing the narrative of Amaechi being Igbo? That rubbish should never be allowed to stand, if they've realized their folly and want to rejoin the Igbo nation, then they should publicize it, publish books, articles and newspaper adverts telling the world that they have rejoined their Igbo brothers. Then Ogbakor Ikwerre should inform Ohanaeze to fix a date when they will be coming to Enugu with massive awareness to meet with them and collapse Ogbakor Ikwerre as a subgroup of Ohanaeze, and afterwards offer a press release to that effect. Anything outside of that is nonsense. Amaechi even used another Igboman to counter Joe Igbokwe's criticism of him, and making it look like it was an Igbo agenda. We would rather support someone from Delta North, at least majority of them accept being Igbo than have anything to do with Ikwerre that believes their origin is Benin. |
omoilewa:Lolz, look at their almighty Lagos looking like a sh!thole, yet they always keep mentioning Aba even when Lagos is fast turning into the world's largest slum. Lagos has cornered most of Nigeria's revenue yet nothing on ground to show for it. A drug Lord has kept it hostage. SMH! |
Igboid:Not just the Ijaw, every part of the South that joined forces with the North to fight Biafra, should all be ashamed of themselves for acting cowardly and being shortsighted. Fulani moves to subdue and control the rest of the country had already become evident to every Southerner. Awolowo was already frustrated at how the North was dictating the affairs of the Western region. Now, when Ojukwu declared Biafra, others in the South should have closed ranks with him knowing that Biafra is fighting for the emancipation of all Southerners. Ojukwu even pledged to help the Yorubas reclaim Illorin and all their towns and villages up to Jebba and the River Niger. That was a very selfless offer! Yet those he was hoping would join him now turned around to team up with the same oppressors to fight Ojukwu. Even the Aburi Accord that would have granted them semi autonomy, protection and an opportunity to grow at their own pace was trashed yet they kept mute like obedient slaves. Look at Nigeria today, all the things Ojukwu fought for has come back to haunt them. RUGA, herdsmen killings, Northern control of everything etc. and all they could do is to whine and complain. Despite everything that is happening today, some of them are still willing to close ranks with the North and fight against the interest of the South. The chances of Yorubas ever getting Illorin and the surrounding areas back is almost non-existent today, even if Nigeria up now. The North is greedily taking everything to their region. $2.3 billion to be spent by the Federal government building pipelines all the way from the Niger Delta to the North, if this is a viable project, private companies would have been the ones building it. Airports, rails, roads, oil exploration, and appointmentsy establishments all going to the North. Billions of dollars too are being spent in the so-called fight against insurgency in the North. Billions of dollars are being spent on the NE commission. Every damn thing is being done in the North and for the Northerners yet those in whose lands the resources are gotten are abandoned. Gold is being mined in the North by their elite and not a Kobo from it goes to the central purse but farmlands and streams in the South have all been destroyed. I am bewildered at how timid, naive, irresponsible, cowardly and stvpid Southern leaders are. Spits! |
eduj:Except what they built is plaza, I don't see how shops inside malls can be sold, it is only practical to rent or lease them. Also, sections of it can be partitioned with glass cubicles and made smaller for traders that need smaller spaces who can't afford to rent larger shops. That is why I said the governor can do it in tranches. He can select a particular zone/area, mark it and give the occupants a specific time period to relocate to such malls already built, once that time elapses, he will demolish it and move to another section. For instance, he can build a dedicated mall for cloths/boutiques, once it is completed, he will demolish sections of the old market were cloths/boutiques are sold and selling of such will be banned anywhere else. He should make sure that such shops are not too expensive for the traders. That is why it is important to use glass to create small cubicles that would be cheaper. Since people won't be paying to run their noisy generators or other challenges they experience when maintaining independent shops, the little added money on rent wouldn't be punishing and they will leave quality lives instead of the kind of suffering they pass through at the moment. The state government has not shown enough commitment already. The traders union at Ariaria have no right to resist such and the government shouldn't tolerate it because they are doing so from the point of selfishness. Many of them own many shops they rent to others and so would naturally be against any change that would affect them. However, it is the duty of any responsible government to do what is right for the majority of people. People are now looking down on Aba people after seeing the sort of environment they trade in. We as Igbos have always been pace setters in innovation in Nigeria but we are now seriously lagging behind. |
Flyingngel:Don't mind the mugu talking like a slave. The same money that was gotten from his backyard in the first place is what he is worshiping Buhari for as if it was money he got from selling his impotent cows. RUBBISH! |
ChimaAdeoye:You're right, Aba used to be about the most important city in the whole of the old Eastern region. Many people elites were even living in the city then including the likes of Margaret Ekpo, Dennis Osadebe and several others but today, the elite and the proliterates have all ran away leaving only traders, even graduates hardly return to the city on leaving school. It's quite sad. |
eduj:This is good! Aba needs to regain its position as an industrial city. The state government should ensure that roads are in good condition as well as proper waste disposal. Also, I don't know why Ariaria market and others in Aba have remained the way they were since 1970's. Abia lacks sophisticated thinking governors otherwise, they would have modernized the markets in tranches. For God's sake this is 2020 and we should be thinking of building mall-like markets. When commerce is integrated with tourism it can yield massive revenue. That is what Dubai and China has done and Aba and Onitsha should be thinking in that direction. Now that shell is supplying gas straight to Ariaria, it is now easy to build massive malls to replace those archaic shops. With a dedicated gas supply, there can be 24 hours light and central cooling systems without the sellers having to pay through their noses. Who needs to go to ShopRite when Ariaria is just like it selling everything cheaper. I don't know why we have mediocres as governors, these things won't cost much to build but the multiplier effect can be massive. Having thousands of shops with all of them using generators, with leaky roofs, gutters in front of shops and flooding whenever it rains is nothing but madness. Anybody who is close to Okezie Ikpeazu should tell him to replace all those old shops at Ariaria with massive malls, if the state does not have the resources to do so (which is not possible) then he partner with private developers. The rest of the world is living us behind and we shouldn't allow that. |
helinues:You seem to be blaming the victim and even defending the account number used in the fraudulent activity instead of consoling her or better still offering advice on how the criminal could be apprehended, is it because the fraudster's name is BALOGUN? To the op, go to the police station along with the fraudsters phone number and account details. They can give you a report to present to the bank so they can blacklist the account. Whenever the fraudster goes to make withdrawal, they will apprehend him. |
helinues:Why did you leave the message to attack the messenger?? Aren't you the one that need to grow up, dude ![]() |
I watched this video earlier, and I found it so disturbing. People we're stampeding just to collect a plate of food Are these guys that poverty stricken and hungry to such extent?? |
martineverest:Would you have said that if it was Osun or Ekiti? Stop hiding your envy and jealousy under the guise of being altruistic. |
catfrog10:WTF did I just watch Tomorrow Yeye Kale will console them with a fake statistics about how they are the richest region. Audio people ![]() |
DenreleDave:Lol, I can feel his anger and frustration on those clueless past and present governors of Abia state, but wishing him death? That's extreme man! |
humilitypays:Yes, you're right. You will hardly find any enlightened and rich Igboman who will stay anywhere in the North beyond Abuja except those working with Federal government or as lecturers. In the past when Abuja was not yet built and when there was no internet and telephones to co-ordinate things virtually, many wealthy Igbos lived in the core North due to their businesses there. However, since Abuja came on board with ease of remote communication, those wealthy Igbos now operate from Abuja and Jos. There are still lots of Igbos in the core North but they are mostly hustlers and people who can't compete elsewhere in the South and can't resist the lure of cheap housing and food with near monopoly in business. Even when some of them come back to the East and discover how much they are lagging behind their kit and kins back home, you will see them return to the North. This may sound annoying but anyone who is naturally lazy and laid-back will find the North irresistible and that is why you see some people defending it despite all the risks. I can't live in anywhere beyond Abuja, even if you will pay me 1 million naira monthly. How can I have rest of mind in an environment where you can lose everything in a twinkle of an eye! So far there are still millions of almajiris roaming around, almost 90% illiteracy and poverty rates, coupled with religious intolerance then no Southerner can ever be safe in the North. That's a fact and anyone arguing it is living in a fool's paradise. |
Arrewa:Jesus Kristi, this guy is wicked This is what we call brutality during the era of mortal Kombat. Finish him! ![]() |
