Nigerian youths are not lazy and we always strive for excellence wherever we are. Our parents still think we owe them for raising us. Nigerian students are excelling academically in other countries but the story is different in Nigeria. And those that think the government don't owe them needs to rethink the subject. The government has a right to provide social welfare to its citizens and providing quality and standard education is one of their responsibilities too. I graduated from a state university back in 2004 and I paid #4000 in school fees in my final year. There is a deliberate plan to make public schools graduates invalid, this has worked well with primary and secondary school and I never enrolled in a private school. So, my brother, you are wrong to think that the Nigeria youth is lazy.

Time to deflate this notion that having high fliers abroad means Nigerian youths are generally that good.
There is self-selection at work; only youth that are are hardworking or brilliant get to go overseas in the first place. Why be surprised that they do well?

Earlier in the week, we were regaled by news that Covenant University embarked on a forced hair cutting for its male student population. The video of same also surfaced leaving many to wonder on the appropriateness of this action from the following standpoints

-Personal hygiene and public health, seeing that a single clipper was reused immediately for all.
-Fundamental human rights of an adult in a higher institution.
-The needlessness of the act as the video only showed students with regular moderate hair level being cut down to reveal the scalp.
-The hypocrisy of an older generation of adults to demonize the same hair levels and styles that were the norm in their days.
-The unrelenting demonization of the African hair by Africans and the bald headed.

Based on the last 2 points, I present to you younger pictures of Bishop David Oyedepo who is the founder of the school, to underscore the hypocrisy that history reveals.

Infact, I dare say that the likes of Matthew Ashimolowo, Pastor Adeboye and Ayo Oritsejafor cannot escape a scalp revealing haircut in a school like Covenant University, that has insisted that every male student must carry a bald head like its founder.

Sure, some guys rock bushes in today's world, but Covenant University believes that those who do (especially the unkempt ones) represent a demographic they don't want their students to be mixed up with. I do not agree with that, but it's their school, so there you have it.

I know, as well as you do, that there are wolves all around us, however, if you disdain something that belongs to you, others will trample on it and wipe their arses with it. He enrolled at the University of London as an External Student and graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Commerce (Hons.). He went to the UK in 1944 to study law at the University of London and was called to the Bar by the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple on 19 November 1946.[4][6]

Apart from his face being on 100 Naira notes, some other achievements of the late sage who hailed from Ikenne, Ogun State are catalogued below;

1.) He named Nigeria’s national currency as ‘Naira’ when he was the Federal Commissioner for Finance. The late sage took the name of Nigeria and collapsed it as ‘Naira’

2.) Awolowo introduced free primary education for all and free health care for children in the Western Region.
3. )He established the first television station in Africa in 1959.

4. )He also erected the first skyscraper in tropical Africa:the Cocoa House (still the tallest in Ibadan).

5.) Awo as fondly called was conferred by President Shehu Shagari with the title of the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), the first and only non-president to be so honoured in recognition of his sterling qualities and contributions to the service of the country.

6.) He was the first individual in the modern era to be named Leader of the Yorubas (Yoruba: Asiwaju Omo Oodua), a title which has come over time to be conventionally ascribed to his successors as the recognized political leader of the Yoruba peoples of Nigeria.

7.) The man widely believed by admirers to be the best President Nigeria never had was the first Leader of Government Business and Minister of Local Government and Finance and first Premier of the Western Region under Nigeria’s parliamentary system, from 1952 to 1959.

8.) In 1949 he founded the Nigerian Tribune, the oldest surviving private Nigerian newspaper, which he used to spread nationalist consciousness among his fellow Nigerians.

9.) The party he founded, Action Group was the first to move the motion for Nigeria’s independence in the federal parliament and he obtained internal self-government for the Western Region in 1957.

10.) The University of Ife was renamed Obafemi Awolowo University on 12 May 1987 in honour of Chief Obafemi Awolowo first premier of the Western Region of Nigeria, whose brainchild the university was.

In 1992, the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation was founded as an independent, non-profit, non-partisan organisation committed to furthering the symbiotic interaction of public policy and relevant scholarship with a view to promoting the overall development of the Nigerian nation. CHUKWUEMEKA ODUMEGWU OJUKWU
Emeka Ojukwu started his secondary school education at CMS Grammar School, Lagos aged 10 in 1943.[10] He later transferred to King's College, Lagos in 1944 where he was involved in a controversy leading to his brief imprisonment for assaulting a white British colonial teacher who humiliating a black woman. This event generated widespread coverage in local newspapers.
At 13, his father sent him overseas to study in the United Kingdom, first at Epsom College and later at Lincoln College, Oxford University, where he earned a master's degree in History. He returned to colonial Nigeria in 1956.
Ojukwu joined the civil service in Eastern Nigeria as an Administrative Officer at Udi, in present-day Enugu State. In 1957, within months of working with the colonial civil service, he left and joined the military as one of the first and few university graduates to join the army as a recruit: O. Olutoye (1956); C. Odumegwu-Ojukwu (1957), Emmanuel Ifeajuna and C. O. Rotimi (1960), and A. Ademoyega (1962).
Ojukwu was the Leader of Biafra seccesionist
He had contested as presidential candidate of his party, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for the last three of the four elections. Until his illness, he remained the party leader. The party was in control of two states in and largely influential amongst the Igbo ethnic area of Nigeria.
Ojukwu was named after anambra state university and Memorial International Library and Convention Centre located in owerri.

For anyone to compare the two people above needs his or head checked. They are not mate, and can never be mate. Awolowo achieved many things, What did ojukwu achieved? He even lost election even in his hometown. Thanks.

Apologies to decent ndigbo for generalizing, but a large enough sample size from Nairaland and real life supports the following:

You Igbos are your own worst enemies. Most Igbos (that I know) are hardworking, and enterprising (often to a fault). Many are also smart. However, most of them also have what I believe it was the late Sardauna who described as "the will to dominate".

This is what leads to crises within their ranks and with host communities. It is, to simplify the narrative somewhat, a great part of what led to the pogrom that preceded the Civil War. It is what is leading to crises in so many parts of Yoruba land.

You folks are quick to make everything about yourself, and in the process, make enemies. I am one of those who lambasted the Lagos government for this new law, but having reviewed the backstory and the rhetoric from the Igbos over the last few years, I now realize it was inevitable. What led to this law is not your success, it is your apparent belief that you can ride on that success to lord it over your host communities.

Take the Jonathan saga. I am one of those who strongly supported the man in 2011. When he fumbled, I decided it was better to take a risk with a man we had previously rejected three times (of course, history has shown that Buhari is a fumbler too, but that is another story). On this, my views were similar to most Yorubas. We supported Jonathan in 2011, but not in 2015 for no reason other than poor performance. However, as usual, (most) ndigbo madeit about themselves.

I won't ask a whole tribe to change. I will instead ask the rational ones among you to look inwards for the solutions to the constant crises with your hosts, rather than lashing out.

I am getting uncomfortable with the frequency at which I am forced to defend OBJ. I feel compelled to do it because a citizenry that is too dense to see things for what they are can never break free of the shackles of oppression. OBJ is no saint. He is possibly just as corrupt as any Nigerian politician (although I see no *evidence* of that). Has a reputation of sleeping with anything in skirts that moves. Vindictive. Ugly (OK, that's a low blow, especially for an energetic octogenarian). But we need to recognize that he remains our best president to date. This is an amended version of some previous posts on his achievements:

1. 2000% increase in foreign reserve.

2. Secured unprecedented level of debt relief (unprecedented==unheard of. Anywhere in the world. Ever.)

3. More than ANY other Nigerian president, OBJ was a man who knew how to put structures and institutions in place. ICPC, EFCC,NAFDAC,health insurance, pension reform, NDDC, telecommunications. Say whatever you want about him using EFCC/ICPC as his personal bulldog, but history says no other Nigerian president did as much to *systematically* fight corruption.

4. Outstanding headhunter. Excellent at seeking out top minds, and had the intellect and ego to stay in the same room with them (unlike someone like GEJ, who seemed easily cowed by intellect, OBJ could slug it out with the brightest mind). He followed talent wherever (tribe or sex be damned)it led, and ended up with brilliant minds like Solude, Okonjo-Iweala, Akunyili etc.

5. Say whatever you will, but he was probably our most de-tribalized president. Notice how so many of his top performer were Igbos?

6. Introduced system of allocating cabinet slots by state (a system that certainly has its flaws, but which was not as abused under him).

7. In keeping with his strength as a visionary who put structures in place, his government launched Nigeria's first satellite.

8. Ran (up till that point anyway) certainly Nigeria's most gender-balanced government. He wasn't scared of powerful women like some of our friends. He did not care about your sex (ahem; I know, I know. He was notorious for ahem PG18..., but that did not affect his performance as president, and that is what is before us).

9. People talk about the "progress" being recorded in the power supply and generation system. They are still following (amended versions of)a blueprint he put in place. Ditto for the national railway networks.

The supervisor's responsibility (and liability) is spelled out in the page on which he signs (the Certification page). To help you, I'll write out what my university's theses have:

This is to certify that this is an original research work carried out by .... in the Department of ... under my supervision.

That page exposes the hypocrisy of supervisors harassing students over their acknowledgement.

I beg to disagree strongly sir. The supervisor's signature makes him responsible for the academic content of the work, and not the living conditions or circumstances under which the student conducted the work!

I know assessors and supervisors all have their pet peeves. I know one who will throw a fit if he sees God anywhere in the thesis. But it's wrong. As I said, a student doesn't have to (pretend to) adopt your values just because you supervised him.
