I can tell u now that they are very rare here, though not impossible to find. I can always keep an eye out for it. I am very confident, like i've said before, that being in the West Coast, the weather is a good thing for old cars. They practically stay rust free.

Are u looking for a completely fixed up or u will take it anyway as long as its intact?   Remember there is no time limit on this. I will keep looking "at the corner of my eye"

VW shows and enthusiast exhibition will be a good place to keep the nose on the ground. People tend to let go of their prized possession in this time of recession.  wink  This car will be in the league of a Kharman Gia.

The other day i ran into a "VW Thing" Remember? Let me refresh your memory  cheesy

u didnt mention the car make/model. u might have been buying bad ones. Hows ur fuel filter? electrical system? Where do you get fuel from?

I suggest u try a station thats owned wholly by the oil company. E.g Total owned some stations themselves. not owned independently. Try buying from those. might cut down on issue of fake fuel.

Good luck

Autos07/08 Range Rover Hse Maintenance In Nigeria by promise72(op): 3:40am On Mar 31, 2009
I have a friend who is conteplating on getting a 07/08 Range Rover HSE. Its not a car i would buy myself cos of some questionable reliability issues. Obviously its one of the most prestigeous Jeeps out there.

What i am seeking is feedback(s) from people who owns this vehicle in Nigeria (or if you are close enough to anyone who does). Repairs? Mechanic availability (since its fairly new) and do owners in Nigeria experience reliability issues on these vehicles as here.

Thanks in anticipation.

Car TalkRe: Odometer Rollback: Salvaged Cars: And Ridiculous Budgets by promise72(m): 2:41am On Mar 30, 2009
viperman:
Ok so over the while now we've been having so many VIN officers on here which i'm very appreciative of; But i want tos say something:

POTENTIAL BUYERS!, Please stop calling dealers to get you cars almost 10years old, and expecting these cars to still have mileages below 50-70000KM.
Or calling dealers to get you cars for ridiculous prices. We already are doing our best on here to beat the prices out there in the market by a good margin, so stop pushing us to the limit. we don't steal these vehicles for crying out loud.
For example, someone calls you asking for a 2004-2005 Honda accord EX full option with all the works.I then get one for this client as soon as possble, only for him to say his budget is 1.6M and that my price is too much at 1.9M( At this current exchange rate with the dollar!!!). This is not just one nairalander calling with this same attitude , huh
I don't know, but i think there needs to be an attitude change both from dealers and buyers. If you want a car at a ridiculous rate don't complain if you're given a salvaged vehicle as that's the best you can get with such WONDERFUL BUDGETS!
You can't kill godzilla with a pebble, yes david killed goliath with a stone, but goliath wasn't godzilla.
If you want the best, be prepared to spend for it.
Stop calling dealers asking that you want, for exampli: a 2008 honda accord and you've got 2M for it, for goodness sakes we don't manufacture these cars.
Now on the issue of salvaged titles e.t.c I think soemthing has to be made clear here:
Some dealers here sell for people who import, some others import and sell themselves, some others just sell for people who aren't internet savvy, but need to display their cars on here. So when a dealer posts a car with the VIN, and one of our VIN-police on here checks it out and discovers it's been salvaged, just don't go about insulting the dealer/poster. You either buy or you ignore that car until you see one posted that you want to buy.
Some dealers have the time to check the VINs before posting(sometimes i personally do that, sometimes i don't depending on how busy i am) others don't.

In addendum, we all need to understand that there are different degrees of salvaged titles.
Some are total write offs, some are serious damages, while others are minors.
Inspired and co might be able to explain this further as i've said my two cents and anyone willing to have a say on this should, CONTRUCTIVELY I MUST ADD.

Damn! shocked A coke and a smile grin Sofry sofry o! cheesy

TravelRe: After Ur Bsc, Is It Still Worth It Going Abroad To Hustle? by promise72(m): 11:44pm On Mar 29, 2009
omonua85:
Hi nairalnders, This is my first thread on nairalnad although i have enjoyed reading through threads for over 2 yeras now. I am a 23yr old graduate seeking to live the good life, my dad is late and my mum is classed among the middle class.I have a handfull of younger ones.I am nursing an ambition to go abroad( canada, US, UK) in 2 or 3 yrs time to pursue my masters degree and hustle while doing that so i can support myself and family in nigeria.I am definately coming back to nigeria after masters. After seeing me through school, i am due for NYSC by march and i have already recieved some offers from 2 nigerian banks and 1 microfiance bank( i wonder if na only bank i submit submit CV to) in nigeria.i really want to bless all those who helped me through school in someway.  and i was thinking Is going abroad to hustle still worth it as it was sometime in the past? some of my collegues in school are doing everything to go abroad. Nothing in particular to go and do , just a few are going for academic purposes. With the global financial crisis and tight economy in the world, with countires cutting jobs and some nigerians coming back home. It appears not to be a good move, maybe working in nigeria is not bad afterall. Some of those whom i know went abroad to pick up legal jobs(not fraud) are not necessarily above thier nigerian collegues who got good jobs here in nigeria.Speaking with one of my friend's dad who  lived almost all his life abroad, he  said it was no more attractive going abroad to meet uncertainty and hustling, staying in nigeria and planning ur life well, getting a good job and by God's grace could get u much more. It is now becoming an option only for the uneducated.I will be glad if nigerians abroad could shed more light on this.I want to welcome evryone to 2009ice, cause gongo aso.
YES. At least u will gain a better point of view of life by living elsewhere.

We have idiots who complain about insecurity in nigeria yet whenever they visit they arrogantly "floss" and "oppress" the less privileged and still they get perplexed when the starving youth catch them at an intersection, or their domicile, and rob them of everything they got right down to their socks. Well what the hell do you expect you slowpoke? If you are not sharing people ain't caring.

If you imbeciles take your ostentatious constipated asses back home and try to prove to those with a dire sense of hopelesness that you are the number "stunna" who has just arrived from "God's own country" then don't complain when you get robbed and left with a hole in your physical frame that's big enough to put an arm and vest through because it's all your making you dumbass.

Humble yourself, bring yourself to parity with the commoner, share their pains and give all you can to help. Be simple! and drop the condescending attitude. Do not do stupid sh*t that will attrack envy and jealousy because you will pay dearly and deservedly too.

And to all you fearful b*tch ass white washed negros who feel a false sense of security and fulfilment in babylon, and any other freaking place outside alkebulan(or so-called africa), and as a result refuse to come home to settle and even ridicule the mere mention of it, i say this to you all: do not dare bring your sorry selves back here after the real nagas who courageously refuse to abandon ship have successfully struggled to restructure this criminal private corporate entity called nigeria. If you dare try to regain entry into the very land you have rejected and scorned during trying times, you weaklings will all have smoking red dots on your heads like them hindus.

You choose to reject the land of your ancestors and embrace babylon(west) so i will have you bear in mind that you all are traitors in the eyes of both man and the Gods of our lands.
How many times has ur visa being denied? I bet if u live in the West for 2years all these bitterness will be gone. I pray for u grin
AutosRe: There's A New Sherrif In Town. Oyenit Is The Name. Bigups. by promise72(op): 11:24pm On Mar 29, 2009
Its a funny thing in Nigeria that anyone trying to do a good deed is always under a threat of being run out of town. I am glad that Oyenik doesnt live in Nigeria cos i am sure that ppl will have showed up at his door with thugs if they know where he/she lives.

All he did is post the VIN report of vehicles posted for sale. He didn't make up the VIN. Facts will be facts regardless of if we wanna face it or not. I am very glad that this VIN is not being recorded Nigerians. It wouldn't even worth the paper its written on.

It takes a deliberate and concerted effort to roll back odometer. SOMEONE KNEW WHAT THEY WERE DOING!. I am not even faulting the sellers at this point. Even its possible that the person who bought it in the US was duped too. But as a dealer/seller, the fact remains that YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT U SELL!. Period.! Regardless.

If someone loan you a car and police find drugs or dead body in the boot, the fact remains that you are in possession of that car at that point. You are responsible. The issue is not whether salvage or not, HONESTY about the product is the issue here.

If i am a buyer, i want to know correct mileage cos of maintenance issues like timing belt. Why should i pay like N5m for a car only for timing belt to go in a year cos i am not aware of correct mileage? That will be an expensive fix.

May be the sellers should do a good job of checking before posting vehicle. Nairaland auto section didnt get here one day. WE GREW TO IT. Requesting VIN wasn't a criteria before until,

So as double checking VIN wasn't the"in" thing before but it will be in a minute. Everybody don shine eyes  wink

So back off OYENIT. Hes doin a fabulous job. More blessing

Hello Sienna, i don't agree with u that bmw don't run a v6 engine. You can  visit this link http://www.car-buying-strategies.com/2003-BMW-325.html to get a full review of the 325 bmw. And beside this a quota from under the hood of a 325 bmw "All the 325 models have one thing in common and that is an inline V6 engine. This 2.5-litre powerplant is highly efficient and it pumps out 184 hp at 5500 rpm, 175 lb-ft of torque at 3500. It can be equipped with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic transmission and it is capable of 20/29 mpg (city/hwy)".
I think theres just a error on the part of the editor of that article. I am not sure if an engine can be "inline" and be a "V6" at the same time. That wher the "I6" sienna was talkin about means.

"Inline" means that all the spark plugs follow each other (like Nissan Laurel Engine) "V6" means 3-plugs on one side, the rest 3 on the other side (Like Nissan Pathfinder). It can only be one or the other. Not both at the same time.

If your connection to the bank is good anything is possible. The banks/insurance companies don't keep these vehicles especially when they have been paid for. Note what I said above, these vehicles used to be given away, or cleared.
I am unsure where u are getting your info from. Here's how salvage vehicle thing works:

Any car(s) thats fully insured after getting into an accident will be towed to a body shop. An adjuster from the insurance comapny will work with the body shop to determine if the car is "viable" to be repaired.

If yes. Car is repaired. If not, the value of the car will be paid off to the owner (finance co/Bank). The car at that point belongs to the insurance company cos its paid for.

Vehicle is then sent to the auction for sale.

My question to you then will be: As a business wouldnt it make sense on the part of the insurance company to get as much for the damaged car as possible? Granted they already lost on the car cos they cant get as much as they already paid/settled on the car.

Why would the be making a "backroom" or "side-side" deal with someone only to pay $50 for it? Also the potential for abuse by the employee. They can give it to relatives etc cos u can easily sell the parts on the street for higher prices.

Mind you, other expenses that will be incured are:

Towing the car to bodyshop

Sending their employees out for estimate(adjustment) on how much it will cost to repair the car to see if its worth it to repair.

Car rental for the owner of the damaged car pending any determination on car (i got $20/day for 30 days in my case years ago)

The body shop might possibly charge storage fees if the vehicle was not eventually repaired there. (Some dont, but most do)

All these done for a measly $50-$100?  undecided

AutosWhats The Point Of Cotonou Cars If Your Car Can Be Siezed By Customs? by promise72(op): 6:44pm On Mar 28, 2009
I am not sure if i am naive or so. If what i am reading is right, it looks like the Customs are seizing vehicles now if the Customs paper are not in order. Thats kinda frightening and sort of counter productive at the same time. Why do people still insist on getting cotonou vehicles when it can randomly be siezed.

How does it really work. I will like the forumites to shed light on this. Can the customs paper be requested at random? Also beware of Clearing agents who do arrangee and get vehicles out without proper documentation even from Lagos port. It can still be seized, as i understand.

thats why i often advice my clients not to go across customs checkpoint when papers of the vehicles are still new and they do not have their original custom papers.customs use that as a revenue to extort as well.they tell u to pay the duty after seizure.but to avoid their harrasements,if you buy a dutable car and you want to be travelling with it often and often, pay the duty.but for non dutable cars, when the car is delivered to you, just make sure that in the next 6months you dont take it across their checkpoint.some can be lucky attimes though.

FIRST POST

@Mr monitor_1

whhy are we trying to make a turn around on the rules in the auto sectionhuh?your thread link you posted was put up by Seun(the admin) on the 30th of July 2005,that states in very simple words the rules that guides the forum,Jesarmy came up with the suggestions on the Auto section and there were some rules also listed so as to guide the auto section, which was accepted in general by everyone.it was openly agreed that there should be no derailment of threads and if you read this, please maybe there is a speck in my eye, but i know there are planks in other people eyes,

Dear Nairalanders,
May I seize this opportunity to appeal to everyone in the house especially those who are in the habit of derailing car adverts intentionally cum unintentionally, truth is the advert is derailed all the same.
My proposition would be that when an advert is posted and the seller have included the vin# of the car,if on checking the vin report of the vehicle we notice a discrepancy on the vin report and the seller's advert,I think the first point of call should be to email the seller on the discrepancy and give him or her a chance to rectify it before bringing it to the open forum.
I believe it is a good thing to protect the buyer but at the same time we should not do it in a way to pull down the seller's business. Please let us be our brother's keeper and go about correcting each other in an atmosphere of love and mutual respect.
Thank you and God Bless,
