@crazyT

There are many things that kids need to succeed in life and I believe it is necesary for kids to be well rounded.

I belong to the school of thought that believes children should spend more time playing with ideas and socializing when they are young. Give them room to realize their potentials before you try starting to comform their behavior.

I don't want my kids to start learning about the stock market at 11. I think they might miss out on some more important things which is only available to them at that age.

You can teach them basic stuff like savings or even simplistic investment for instance but the stock markethuh I don't think so.

Hi guys, I learnt from you all how important it is to teach your children about trading in stocks at an early age.

So I am planning to call my boys (11 and 8 years respectively) to a round table discussion today about stock market.
Can any one of you help a brother with tips on how to explain stock market to kids?

The idea just hit me now after calculating how much we spend for their birthday presents just last week (about 1200 Euro) The bithday parties (both at home and schools not included) so I was planning to use that as an example and show they what would have happen to the same money had it been it was invested in Capoil or any of the penny stocks.

Or am I going too farhuh
Going ke?? I think you already gone far far out grin grin grin.

Chei, stock trading for kiddies.

@All

GT Bank Result. someone mentioned they can still make 21Bn full year PAT on this thread. Given they made 11 point something bn so far how are they going to make another 11bn only in the last quarter of the year? I don't think Banking business is such seasonal for such performance. And I seriously think if they do make 21bn eventually, one needs to look beyond the surface.

Anyone one agree? 21bn Full Year PAT possible?
I don't think this is the point that is being made. The Accountants can help. Companies have different ways of recognizing revenue.  Revenue generated in Q-1 to Q-3 which has not been recognized may eventually find it's way into the full year results.

As an example revenue can be recognized once a sale is made (just signed contract, no payment from customer yet) or it can be recognized based on the percentage of completion.

The treatment of expenses presents the same issues.

You see it puts a lot in perspective.
Have you used the price history?
Have you used the closure date section?.
I can get all these information from other sources.

I can get price history on cashcraft and get closure date information on the days they are announced through meristem and I store all these information for easy retrieval at any time.

The cscsnigerialtd site is not always up to date. A few months back they did not update the closures information for almost a month and the site has this bad habit of being down when you need to access it.

The price gainers/losers information only reports the absolute values. I need percentages which tell a better story. This is also available from other sources.

I don't have an account though I can view my portfolio there by navigating through my brokerage account.

I need clarification - I have looked at cashcraft and FSDh - they only record the high, low and closing prices

no opening prices-- can I still chart RSI based on these alone or what can I do?
Same question I wanted to ask. Where do we get opening prices in FSDH format??

to pumping,

about your question if you should cash out that kind of money to go trading  in Nigeria. You could make a kill and on the other hand you could end up in a pyscratic ward. Volumes moves the market take a stock for AGLEVENT the highest trade this year is on a single day is 1.7m units the lower limit of its intrinsic value is N6.50 while the upper is about N9 but it is all dependent on the performance of the company now knowing this you decide to place an order for about 100m units what do you think will happen. You would have tilted the market. The wise ones acquire over a period of time and then place this kind of order on daily basis mopping up the excess. Then when band-wagon effect has caught on they offload the ones the had bought earlier. This ploy was used on AFROIL, IPWA etc and believe me boys have cleaned out. If you want to do legitimat trading with that kind of money, I would think that only the banking sector can afford to move volumes without raising much of an eyebrow anyway let me not bore you guys too much
I definitely like this technique. One can always still make a kill even if the volume is low. No need overheating the market by trying to offload a large volume of an illiquid stock.

I have used considerable credit in both the UK and US, but have found the Nigerian credit more appealing, because it makes me sleep better at night, high interest rates notwithstanding.  Anywhere I invest, I try to keep the asset/liabilities as local as posible to avoid risk cross-overs.

Take a simple scanario. Managed to invest 18M of credit in Access bank 2-3 weeks ago. Sold 1 week later with a 1M profit. Bought it back at N3.3  less few days later. Now approx 5% growth. Do I care if I'm paying 1% to the bank? Not really. At least no-one is asking for a £800 monthly charge for credit on credit card in the UK.  Many of these opportunities abound in the NSE. The Nigerian market is a growth market. As long as the stocks selected are of fundamentally sound companies, worst that can happen is that it'll take a little longer to materialize if an expected pattern unravels.
Chei. Na you dey move the stock  grin grin grin

I'm with you here sha. Credit never dey spoil for Naija to the extent that it is irreparable. No CCJ ke.

Cool it down ooo!!.

I did not say 1 bank - did I? Remember when you are married and both are working is another ball game from single person ooo.

An average person I have met since my short time here has as many as 3-5 credit cards

at least 1 amex, 1 mastercard and 1 Visa.

Then there is line of credit and you can have unsecured line of credit as much as 100k - depends on your relationship with your bank and whether you have other investment vehicles with them

When you combine all the credit limits of both partners and line of credit - bam -----

Remember - the key word established. I have learnt that everything is strategy.

I have also met people here that have lived here for 3 years without a credit history - they do not understand what other peoples money can do? They are afraid of credit card spending and interest. They just allow their savings of 20k lie in the bank for nothing

I only buy what I want to buy - no temptation can catch me as far as I know the purpose for me having credit - chikena.

Except you have a credit history Bank no send you!.
I've lived for fairly long periods (working for the same company for 8 years)  in the UK, Ireland, Germany and now in the US and I have impeccable credit all over. In the UK alone, I have credit cards with total credit limits over £100K (2 cards alone make up almost £50K). If I combine the credit on the cards I have in these 4 locations, I'll be looking at over $500K. Do you expect me to cash this out and go stock trading in Nigeria??  huh huh

What will happen to my credit here if this go wronghuh CCJhuh Bankruptcy??

My point is this. If you have $500K line of credit, please don't take it all. Maybe take 10%. Caution. Oyinbo credit is very much tied to time. If you payment is late by one day, na wahala. It is called irreparable damage.

I'm just saying it is not as simple has you have put it.

If you want to proceed this way, you have to device a better way of taking advantage of the credit system.

In my own case, I sold one of my properties in Ireland (After 200% appreciation Ireland good o) and moved the funds to Naija this year. No headaches. No sweating.

I think this guy pumping has his body in the US and his soul in the NSE.
You're studying the NSE book on your own and getting it.
I heard you say you were lurking for beta glass the other day.I laughed. If you had struck on the Thursday/friday days i told you about, you would have been 10% richer today. Now look two weeks back from 7th when Beta glass hit its last low,it was a friday again. Now this is were volume (trading wise comes in for me).Its RISKY though but forget that i've talked about 25% many a time.I usually use N6m or a little less to get 10% in one week and after my broker commission,i end up with N360,000 in 1 week.
@Windywendy

I'm really impressed with your bravery oh for a lady. You're my second sister after yodiyokun.
NSE has habits and these old habits just don't stop.We human beings behave continuosly in particular ways and patterns by which we can be easily identified.
I'll explain some things later in future sessions.Examples will pop up.
Trust that I already told my broker that my trades can only be executed on Thursay or Friday Just joking but frankly I've stopped trading outside this window.

I think you have access to my portfolio grin. My Beta Glass is looking at me with 10% interest. However, caution got the best of me. I only bought 50k units sad sad

In fact you are very right but not about the deep pockets part

I use good PO/IPO opportunities to take care of my long term investing while I see how this momentum based trading goes. My limit remains that I won't buy a stock without good fundamentals. I don't care about any momentum then. It means I will miss out on some juicy opportunities but no problem. I need to preserve my funds.

I have a problem with this ! it can be argued either way - high volume traded could mean many people are selling - because they want to take profit or people ar ebuying because its a good price to enter.

Can we say the turn of the volume treand could mean a reversal in the current price trend? is this the case

Volumes requested is diferent from the volume actually traded. - Please explain how all this works!
Actually, let me give one example.

Very High Volume and 5% gain in price will normally translate to a bull run.
Very High Volume and 5% drop in price will normally translate to a bear run.

These are very simple scenarios. It does not require any chart. Now factor in the trading pattern over the last few days and you'll be amazed at the trend that can come to light.

Who says you can't do both? wink trading and investing that is
I combine both methods in my own case but the arguement is with folks that think only stocks with high volumes are worth investing in.

I do Low volume, High margin or
High Volume, Low margin

Either can be very profitable.

With access to cheap funds here in the States (which I presume you reside), margin trading can be VEEEERRRYYY rewarding. You might want to give it a thought . . .
The problem is not the funds. My portfolio right now has about 40% in cash. The problem is the risk appetite. I've only started trying it out, so I'm threading with caution.

Hmmm, can you explain that further could perhaps be another addition to my chest of strategies  wink smiley
All the charting that is being done in technical analysis is really only trying to predict the future behaviour of majority of traders based on what has happened in the market in the past. Most folks see all these charts as some mathematical jargon that gives rise to some magical decisions. However, these are just mathematical ways of determing what the mood of the market is likely to be.

So for instance if more than 50% of the outstanding shares of a stock were exchanged at an average of N50 in the last one week, what is likely to be the trend of the price next week? These are really the sort of questions these technical analysts are trying to answer and it makes sense.
InvestmentRe: Stock Market Tips For Nigerians by pumping777(m): 7:49pm On Dec 13, 2007

@yodiyokun, volume is everything in the stock market. Some trend watchers pay very firm attention to volume as this has a big story to tell about the availability or otherwise of any particular stock. High volumes suggest availability while low volumes suggest scarcity.
Also a stock that is sparsely available will experience scarcity immediately large volumes are requested. Some traders love this a lot. Used it myself immediately I found out the number of shares that Nig german has. I saw that only about 30 mil units will form the basis for availability since others are held by top directors and institutions.
Hope this helps.
Now, this is the crux of the matter. A margin trader will not consider NGC but investing in such a stock over time can still be very rewarding. Chellerams is another example. Scarcity can also mean you stand to gain a lot, provided you have the stock.

My thoughts EXACTLY!
I never start serious margin trading at all. It is not my forte yet and I'm threading with caution. Unfortunately I frequently end up with unused cash in my portfolio.

So far I don't have any stock that is more than 20% of my portfolio. It used to be worse becuase I used to have stocks that formed 1% of my portfolio grin. Now the limit is 10% and rising.

Ha, Julius Berger. Anyone noticed how the stock silently made millions for people in the last 4 months?

This is what I meant by missing the bus if you are waiting for a stock price to fall too low and it refuses to get there. I bid for the stock around September for N54. My broker did not get and I refused to up my bid even though it was just about N55.

It was N90 last month. If I still bought at N60, I would still have made 50%.  angry angry angry

According to Costain's prospectus, the proceeds of the hybrid offer is expected to be available by December, 2007. I suppose this was the plan before the delay due to some issues with NSE regarding the original offer.

So to Yodiyokun's point, I also think, it may be a challenge adding so quickly to the bottom line in 2008.
