I've not lived in Lag for up to 1 year but have been stopped and harrased by the cops like 4 times now.

Gave up a certain amt of cash after the first search but nowadays, i go change am for you even before you show me id card finish.

I'll first tell you that this is not original police ID card and that it looks fabricated. This totally knocks them off guard I've noticed.

"my friend, no be so police ID card be. You sure say you be police true true abi shey you wan de impersonate police for Lagos again" I go para you say u be fake police guy.

Most times, when it gets to this stage, one or two backup cops usually joins the scene. Plus a few passers-by and alayes.

And if you ask me what I have in my bag and request for a search. I'll first ask you to identify yourself and provide a stop & search warrant before asking me questions.

At this point, they'll almost always ask me to walk over to their patrol bus (which is usually an unmarked [no plate number] vehicle) and settle with their Oga... this is another major lamba they play to unsuspecting victims to lure them into an enclosed location... and I will reply with a BIG CAPITAL LETTER NO.

Go where? Which car? Which nonsense settle??

...Now, trust me things may get a bit physical now so be prepared.

The cops will definitely want to intimidate me and will most likely do that by laying hands on me. it could be a push, shove, a slap to the back of the head, or jacking my trousers.

And Na that time I go fully CHANGE AM FOR THEM.

If they forceful snatch my baggage and ask for a search, I go de shout on top my voice say make everybody come see o.

Them wan search my bag make una help me de watch because my bag de clean before dem go drop 'Igbo' or drugs inside am. And that is when the main crowd go come gather come witness movie.

By now, I go done dey scream "Na Kidnappers o! Dem wan Kidnap me!"

Me? Enter which bus? For Lagos?? Shey you be ritualist abi Kidnapper ni.

U go see person for road say make him enter car wey I know sabi. Me I go come follow you? Make u kidnap me.

The aim is to never let them get you into their car because it'll be either you bail out yourself (for nothing) or they'll waste your time.

Na before I de form civilised man for police. e get one wey stop me two times under 15 mins. As he approached me he said "guy, you remember me?" Na punch I give am for chest call am kidnapper again before I japa cross express angry

in a Crazy country. you gotta act Loco mehn..

When traveling, I uninstall all SM apps. I dey block my Bank notifications both on SMS and mail (because an an alert might come in during a phone search and they'll most likely want to extort you if you have huge figures in it)

All these shit happens because most times we are scared of creating a scene. In Lagos, we live for crazy moments angry

And if you don't play along, they'll get a court order right there in their office (because they have lawyers on ground) and freeze your acct.

Funny thing is, they won't even charge you with any reasonable offense.

If you've not made contact with the guy at all then chances are he's not with the DSS.

Because they usually let their preys contact a relative.

Get a lawyer and move the case to court ASAP. except your friend isn't so clean.

In court, the lawyers usually push for a bail while investigation is ongoing.

And if truly there's no case to answer then you guys can start out of court resolution.

You just settle once and for all (but you can never tell how it plays out because you're coming from a weak angle when you propose to settle)

how I think it works: someone tips them off esp. bankers who monitor your account for a while. and if you have anything close to 5m and above then you're the perfect prey.
