Yes, Linux can run on less, the issue is things like VSCode and npm but you will have more ram to use than Windows

It uses a dual core pentium(r) cpu with 2GHz processor and about 300Gb HDD. Originally came with 1GB RAM, so I had an extra one added to make it 2Gb. I'm only now realizing that it may be of more lower spec than my old one that got damaged. Was thinking about swapping the RAM, but this one is a DDR2 whereas the old is DDR3, so not compatible. By the time I open firefox, notepad++ or maybe visual studio and connect to the internet, it starts slowing down.

Yeah this is low especially the ram, if you had 4gb I would had advise to move to Linux, it is lightweight and good for programming.
