gentlegenius: I was once in Ken's shoes... I dated a young girl about 2 years ago and I was very sure she loved me. But her attitude towards me was very inconsistent. Today she will act like I mean everything to her and she can't live without me. Tomorrow she'll act like I don't mean anything to her or I'm not even part of her life. This got me thinking and wondering what is it that she really wants. Sometimes, she'll behave like we are quarreling when actually nothing gone wrong between us. I used to ask her why she's behaving so warm and cold towards me but she wouldn't have any answer to that. I finally resorted to playing by her rules: Any day she acted warm and loving towards me, I will also act warm and loving towards her. Any day she acted cold and unfriendly towards me, I will simply pay her back with her own coin. With this development, I stopped complaining about her attitude. But I noticed that she, on her own side, wasn't happy to be displaying such attitude towards me, and yet she couldn't stop it. I began to see it as a psychological problem, and I decided to help her overcome it. But unfortunately, she was doing everything possible to prevent me from helping her, and that includes avoiding me sometimes. When her avoidance became too much and too obvious, I resorted back to the rules of the game: paying her back in her own coins. But this time, I went too far... She noticed that I have gone extra miles to show her that I can also avoid her. Sometimes, she'll come to my house with a look of remorse on her face - behaving as if she feels deeply sorry and want to apologize to me, but I will ignore her and continue with the avoiding game. This whole thing baffles me so much because I loved her and I was very sure she loved me. I was always wondering what could make her behave this way towards someone she loved. It was difficult to either continue dating her or let her go. One day, I read Gary Chapman's book 'Things I wished I had known before marriage'. This book opened my eyes and I saw the exact reason why she was behaving that way and why changing her was almost impossible. I learned a great lesson that before a man considers a lady for a serious relationship or marriage, he should first of all find out about her mother's attitude especially towards her father... Just like what happened in this story, I discovered that my girlfriend's mother had a very bad attitude and she was constantly fighting and quarreling with her father until they finally seperated. So, the constant fights, quarrel and sometimes warm, sometimes cold relationship between her parents did not only affect the girls character, but it molded her and shaped her thoughts and emotions to resemble that of her mother; and because it affected her entire being, it was almost impossible for another person apart from her parents to influence or change her. Back to our story, Ken wouldn't have been able to change Grace no matter how hard he tried, but now that her mother is beginning to talk sense into her, and show her regrets for treating her late husband so coldly, it is possible for her to influence Grace and change her. For it is only the same people that impacted us negatively with their character flaws that can easily influence us to correct those flaws and change.
This to me was an important lesson, that's why I took time to write this.
In case you see this as a useless distraction from the story... I humbly apologize. Thanks for this 2 Likes |
