Anyone who will stay in Nigeria because of a higher salary is quite confused about the logic and purpose of their japa. This is basic maths, but nobody pays attention in maths class these days. To be honest, alot of Nigerian's leaving the country is for a better life standard, and not necessarily money, people are seeking for safety, good health care system, quality education system etc. Trust me with your money in this country you can't afford those, you can't buy safety (ask some generals in the army why their kids are abroad & why they relocate after service and you get the answers you seek) , these are functions of government responsibilities, which they have failed without any form of remorse. Nigerians are no longer safe in their country, you have a good job, you are prone to be kidnapped, you drive a good car, you can be robbed and killed, kids are spending close to a decade in public universities for a 5years program. The exodus campaign out of the country is based on having quality lifestyle, Nigerians are simply tired of not been safe in their country anymore. The good Job comes with its inherent risks of been killed, robbed, or kidnapped, so trust me is beyond the salary to stay back in a system designed to shorten your life span. fix the country and Nigerians will stay back. it is not a salary issue. Are you aware there is no middle class in Nigeria again?, a good number of Nigerians are one chronic disease away from poverty. Have we not seen someone that returned back to Nigeria to work at the rate of same salary structure. This case here depends on the person skill-set, and how important such person is to the firm. Average entry level salary in UK is $32,500 = ₦14,428,050.00 yearly. Let's break it down. $32500/12 = $2,708 making ₦1,202,189.52 monthly. (Subjected to all statutory deductions) In short there are many companies that can afford this in Nigeria depending on how skilled you are. Note: it's not bad to japa and it's not bad to stay back, but it's depends on your purpose. Let me stop here. |

Recently I was informed of a case where an employee was accused of stealing. His department has no direct dealing with funds, and one wonders how he carried such an act. He was suspended immediately without any evidence, the investigation process was shady, and after two days he was arrested and told to provide the money he stole from the organization, or else would be charged to court. He maintained he did not steal and the organization should carry out a proper investigation as he has no idea what is happening. While he was arrested they called in an expert to check his mail and other links for evidence and found nothing. He was locked up in the police cell for two weeks and was only released because the MD requested he resume work immediately. Upon resumption, he was invited to the MD's office for an apology as their investigation showed the money was not stolen but the proper account was not done. Now, he wants to sue the organization for unfair treatment and they are pleading for a settlement outside the court. Should he listen to them or go ahead with it? The negligence of proper investigation led to him being locked up in the police cell for two weeks with torture and humiliation. Also, his goodwill in that organization has been tarnished. All of this could have been avoided if a proper Disciplinary Investigation was carried out. During disciplinary investigations do not assume what the resolve is until you investigate and have facts with evidence. Despite every effort, even the best-run businesses may encounter disciplinary problems with employees from time to time. There is no perfect organization, hence the need for policies and procedures that aid best practices. Although it is always best to focus on effective management practices and preventative measures, having clear and fair disciplinary procedures is a good first step in avoiding difficult employment tribunals. It is advisable to have a detailed policy in place to address various disciplinary issues, and when there is an issue, especially a case or Gross misconduct, The HR Head should ensure due diligence is carried out to the letter so that no one is accused wrongly. Please let me know your thoughts on the previous story of the young man accused of stealing would you advise him to settle out of court or sue the organization? |
Diary of a Naija Job Seeker What I learnt during my recent job hunt 1. Be very objective about your reason for a new job 2. Don’t burn bridges when an interview doesn’t go as you please, still keep in touch with the human resource manager, you never know what opportunities may be available in the future. 3. Don’t shortchange yourself, call the salary you want to earn confidently, I mean do it confidently 4. Don’t just be willing to accept offers that come in quickly, weigh your pros and cons strategically 5. Look for people or friends looking for job during the same period as you. Nothing beats have a community of people around you that can share your win and loss and also understand what you are going through too. 6.Job search is a job on its own, it’s not for the weak, be resilient and consistent irrespective of the number of rejections or ghostings you get. 7. As you are being interviewed, interview the company too if it’s a place you will fit into, their culture and work environment. 8. Let your networks know you are looking for job so that you can be referred for opportunities they come across. 9. Take a break , it can be overwhelming at times, you can choose to take a break if you aren’t getting responses and invites.10. Harness LinkedIn , reach out to HRs, staff of the company you will like to work for, etc Also send them mail on the career section of their company website. If you need a job today, you should have started searching several months ago ![]() Success to everyone looking for better opportunities this period ![]() |
