One of my favourite quotes is by Myles Munroe who said that the poor think of money, the rich think of things, and the wealthy think of ideas. Money is important, however, I believe there are other assets that are more valuable.

Time is one of those important assets, and this is why most people work hard now so they can retire early and rest more comfortably. A person's time is an invaluable resource, and once they have gained control of their time, they are likely to have control of practically every other aspect of their lives as well.

Physical wellbeing is another valuable asset. I believe that no amount of money can substitute for good health. As you already know, there have been many illnesses that have defiled even the largest sums of money. This is why it's important to pay a closer attention to your health.

In my opinion, the most valuable asset is relationship. Assume you are the richest person in the world and there is no one else besides you. The money will be worthless and life will literally be meaningless without other people. For this reason, it is necessary to intentionally establish relationships in order to achieve success. People are valuable regardless of their age, wealth, education, or status.

Although these qualities may appear basic, they can have a profound effect on many people once they are properly understood.

This term is used (by Nigerians) for people who have left their home country to a different one in search for better opportunities.

From my experience alone in the last 5 years, about 150 professionals have migrated from my former office back home (in Nigeria) to a different country. This number is from one office alone. Majority of these people are doing the same work they were doing back home while a very few others are studying.

While the numbers can appear staggering, I believe this is an advantage for not just the individuals involved that have migrated but also for their extended families and loved ones, the company they left and the country at large. How? See some advantages below.

1. These professionals get better quality experience and exposure. For any professional, experience is everything.

2. Their families are better off because they're in a better place to provide assistance - black tax.

3. The company they left can tap on the power of alumni to increase their bottom line as well as get referrals from them for good replacements.

4. The country enjoys funds repatriation and increase in employment for its teeming unemployed population. From what I hear, the high standard entry requirement for entry level and experienced professionals is now lowered and these replacements are thriving.

Are there negatives? Maybe. But when next we think of Japa, let's think of the positives because it's the only way to take advantage of what we can do little or nothing about. People will always migrate to where there are better opportunities.

A couple of years ago, I applied for a HSE Manager role in another African country. Received several calls from the UK and UAE during the interview process and I did very well. We negotiated remuneration (in USD) and came to an agreement.

All that was left was for me to receive the offer within the week- but I didn’t. The recruitment team stopped responding. After a few weeks, I gave up- disappointed and downcast.

A month later, terrorists raided the hotel where the company’s foreign workers, along with others, were permanently lodged for the project. About 50 foreign workers in total were killed in cold blood, including the company’s Country Manager.

I was in shock for days.
