There is no constitutional provision for Mayor. The Obiano government started well by creating the Awka Capital Territory Development Agency but then did little to staff it or even fund it. I said a long time ago that you need Development Boards or Agencies to manage major cities from which all key projects should be run - Transport, environment, sanitation, roads, water, healthcare. Staff them with qualified people to get around a lot of the incompetent civil servants that have entrenched themselvves in the ministries of works, health, transport, etc. With them you could even get experts from development agencies (UN, world bank, etc.) to work there funded by external orgs.

Project-driven Agencies are well known to be far more effective than the morass that is state civil service.

He could create a management agency, like he did for Awka. From my understanding, the ACTDA only operates within Awka, so Onitsha is left out. Onitsha generates more revenue, so it'd make sense to ensure it's being properly managed, that building regulator systems are being enforced, that roads are being swept, that standards are being kept (i.e. pavements, underground drainage, bins, enforcement against garbage dumping and defacing structures with posters). Because as far as micro-management is concerned, that's an impossibility. No governor can manage large cities, while governing the state in its entirety.

And if you say a Mayor isn't part of the constitution, because it was, in 1966, then it means Nigeria's constitution also needs reforming.

Onitsha is what happens when you allow the small man total freedom. Everything smacks chaos and lawlessness. Just look at how buses load on the side of roads, Keke everywhere, wheel barrows everywhere. Side shops, hawkers. Onitsha is disappointing in that as a city it offers the opportunity of scale but then wastes it by failing to scale. It is like Lagos Island without the big companies and businesses. Primitive markets everywhere.

The next government needs to bring order to markets and transport in the state. They have to put an end to anybody just buying a shuttle or keke and plying the road looking for passengers. Intercity transport should be run by government with routes and scheduling. Bus terminals need to be built for inter and intra state bus movement.

Markets need to look like real wholesale markets with enough parking, conveniences and modern facades not 100s of unpainted shops littering a place.

The major roads of cities should be decongested from primitive retail. Onitsha downtown harbors the very ugly Ochanja which should have been relocated just like Zik Avenue in Awka with the ugly Eke Awka market.

You can't expect the Governor to micro-manage Onitsha, that place needs a Mayor.

No need to panic and start calling Governor as if he didn't know the system already. This method did not start today. It is the irony of always "cleaning" gutters and leaving the trash on the edge of the gutters, then street sweepers and rain dutifully return all the trash back into the gutter. Moreover, if the drainage was underground, then no one would need to clean it. On the surface, it may seem cheaper and more convenient for the governor's to build cheap roads with big pits on the sides of the roads, but in the long run, it ends up costing more.

Better to build 5 high quality roads with drains and pavements, than 50 cheap roads, with side pits, you guys refer to as drains.

Abia is the dirtiest Igbo state not the dirtiest Nigerian state, there are tons of states that are far worse, in terms of hygiene. In terms of development, Abia is ahead of 90% of Nigeria's states, with industries and businesses to boot. There are many millionaires and billionaires in Igbo land, and they didn't acquire their money through theft, like those in the North. Unlike them, they have the companies to support their wealth, such as Zinox and Innoson to name a few.

You can keep denying that the civil war wasn't a genocide, when it was. The entire world saw and interpreted it as such. Why do you think there was so much outrage? Angola had a 32 year civil war, do you hear anyone talking about it? Of course, until people like you stop being evil, Nigerians will continue to suffer. When calculated along geographical location, it can be seen that South ruled for almost 24yrs while North rule for almost 36yrs.
Yoruba ruled for approximately 12years, Fulani ruled for less than 11yrs, Angas ruled for 9yrs, Igbos ruled for 6yrs, Ijaw had 6yrs, Kanuri had 5yrs, Nupe had 8yrs, Tuarek had 2yrs while Hausa had 1year only.

First is that Igbo people do take people from other communities.....but often it is a futile effort.

People from other nations don't want to subject their children to the training due to its duration. The boys of other ethnic groups often don't accept the habits and culture the training instills.

It's not the responsibility of Igbo people to incorporate others into their culture, just as it isn't for every other ethnic group in Nigeria.

I'm not advocating anything, I'm just answering the question. How do you fix things? Well, you don't fix things by doing the same thing over and over and over. And asking people not to be corrupt, is doing the same thing Nigerians did 20 years ago, and what those Nigerians did 20 years before that. It doesn't work. The only thing that will work, is if Nigeria operated as it was initially intended. As a country of many nations. If the various ethnic groups are only able to affect the lives of their own people, then it'd eliminate the do or die affair which is so prevalent in Nigerian politics.

There's nothing special about you or anyone else, the way you think, isn't any different from the average Nigerian. The problem with Nigeria is that Nigeria isn't a real country. There's nothing to quote. The Nigerian economy retracted over the period of 1960 - 1999. Nigeria had a Per Capita income of $10,000 in 1960, by 1999, it was $900. Nigerians were 900% poorer after 30%+ years of military governance.

What infrastructure projects are you talking about? Most of Nigeria's infrastructure was built in the last 20 years. Nigeria was a heavily indebted country by 1999, owing over $20 billion dollars, with a GDP no larger than Ghana today, with over 120 million people in it. Imagine if Ghana (today) had a population of 120 million. That's how bad the situation in Nigeria was.

The military only gave the nation over to civilians, because Nigeria was on the brink of total collapse.

It boggles the mind how anyone can rationalise that a nation is better run by trained killers than actual educated people.
