Over the weekend, it was reported that some rioters torched a police station in Kusada, Katsina State, leading to the death of one person, because of the arrest of an Islamic cleric who held public prayers on Friday in breach of the Federal Government’s ban on gathering of crowds as a measure to stem the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.

Putting what happened in Katsina in context, it was not strange. Nigeria has three key problems that have bogged it down for decades: religion, ethnicity, and politics. The absence of a structure that puts these issues into cognisance and finds a solution to accommodate them in a positive way has ensured that Nigeria has stagnated or even regressed.


In summary, one can say that religion drives the North; politics drives the West, while ethnicity drives the East. By the East, one means the Old Eastern Region and the old Mid-Western Region.

The only part of Nigeria where the arrest of a religious leader for disobeying a Federal Government directive can lead to the burning of a police station is the North. And in the North, it will mainly be in the North-East, North-West and a small part of the North-Central. In Northern Nigeria, you dare not toy with Islam in whatever form. The passion for Islam is even higher than what obtains in Saudi Arabia where Islam has its headquarters.


In the North, political differences may hardly cause any quarrels. That is why in the Second Republic, Mallam Aminu Kano, with his People’s Redemption Party, controlled Kano State, the biggest state in the region (which then had Katsina as part of it), at a time Alhaji Shehu Shagari of the National Party of Nigeria was the President of Nigeria. At the same time, the Great Nigeria People’s Party, led by Alhaji Waziri Ibrahim, was in control of the old Borno State (which includes the current Yobe State). That did not create any problem or riot in the North.


Last month, the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, was deposed and banished by the Government of Kano State. Some feared that it could cause a riot in the Kano and other Northern states, but nothing happened. The reality is that such a thing does not have the capacity to ignite a riot in the North.

If the Oba of Benin or the Obi of Onitsha had been deposed and banished for speaking against poverty, street children, low illiteracy rate and inequality in their domains or because of perceived political differences with the governor, it would have created an uproar in Edo and Anambra states respectively, with other neighbouring states speaking fiercely condemning the governor. In fact, the governor would not even contemplate deposing such a traditional ruler over such seemingly petty issues for fear of the consequences. An extreme action like that could only arise if the traditional leader is accused of a serious criminal offence like robbery, fraud, kidnapping, or any action that is deemed as bringing his office to disrepute.


Similarly, it will be hard to see the North riot over poverty, harsh economy or lack of employment. But it will be easy for the North to riot if there is any action taken against Islam in any part of the world, be it Denmark, Britain, France or the United States.

In addition, the Boko Haram insurgency, which has its roots in religion, cannot happen in any part of the South. There can be an uprising in the South over ethnic or political issues, but never over religion.


The Middle Belt, which is also part of the North, draws its strength of unity from religion: Christianity. The people of this zone see themselves as united by Christianity in a region dominated by Muslims.

Conversely, when it comes to the Western part of Nigeria, religion can never make it to resort to violence. As I wrote in an August 2012 article entitled, “Religious tolerance: Are the Yoruba Number 1 in the world?”, there may not be any ethnic group or race that is more tolerant than the Yoruba on the issue of religion. Man and wife or twins can be Muslim and Christian and live in peace. A family may have a Muslim father, a Christian mother, a Christian first daughter of a different denomination, an animist first son, an atheist second son, and yet live in peace, with everyone celebrating each religious feast as one family. People can be voted offices irrespective of their religious inclinations. That is why the religious division being created by the Muslim Rights Concern, led by Prof Ishaq Akintola, is dangerous to what the South-West is known for.



However, when it comes to politics, the South-West is least tolerant of dissenting views in Nigeria. That is why the political violence that happened in the First Republic tagged Operation Wetie could not have happened in any other part of Nigeria except the South-West. A Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe from the East can be the presidential candidate of the Nigerian People’s Party while his kinsman Dr Alex Ekwueme is the vice presidential candidate of the NPN under Shagari. Such cannot cause any conflict. It is the same in the North.



In the South-West, there is usually one mainstream party to which every “true Yoruba” or omoluabi is expected to belong. Any other party is seen as the party of saboteurs, and anybody who belongs to it is viewed harshly and is hardly ever forgiven. Anytime a South-West state is not controlled by that mainstream party, all is not seen as being well until that state is brought back to the fold. The unwritten law is that when it comes to politics, all South-West states must be controlled by the mainstream party of the South-West. Anything to the contrary is seen as an aberration.



In the South-East and the South-South, a different scenario plays out. Religion and politics do not make the people draw the lines. What fires them up is more of ethnic loyalty. Within the zones, you can belong to any political party or religion without much crisis. However, when the people feel that their well-being is threatened, they mobilise and resist such. That was what led to the Biafran War in 1967. The people of the Eastern Region, especially the Igbo, felt that their existence was threatened in Nigeria and resisted it. Before it, the uprising for the creation of the Niger Delta Republic, which was started by Isaac Adaka Boro on February 23, 1966 was for the same reason. Boro believed that the Igbo and the Federal Government were dominating the people of Niger Delta.



Similarly, Ken Saro-Wiwa led the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People because of his belief that the Federal Government was tapping the crude oil in Ogoniland and devastating the land without doing much for the people. That movement ended in the hanging of Saro-Wiwa in 1995. But shortly after Nigeria returned to democracy in 1999, sons of the Niger Delta took up arms against Nigeria, blowing up pipelines and kidnapping oil workers as their way of protesting the neglect of their land. It later ended in 2009 with an amnesty.



These are clear signs that show that what beats the drum to which each part of Nigeria dances is different. The tastes, values, desires and worldviews of the different parts of Nigeria are different. What one part sees as immaterial or insignificant means the world to the other zone and vice versa. That is why it has been disastrous trying to run Nigeria like “one nation bound in freedom, peace and unity.”

The only option open to Nigeria to have a modicum of progress is if it is run like a true federation with each zone given the free hand to pursue its dreams. It is a reality that has been difficult for some Nigerians to come to terms with. Yet, it is a reality that continues to thwart every attempt made to circumvent it.

Coronavirus: Why Buhari Won’t Address Nigerians

In most parts of the world, it feels like the world has come to, or is coming to, an end. Routines have been displaced. Familiar reality has been ruptured. Even habitual perceptions of the world around us are being disrupted. And people are gripped by immobilizing panic and anxiety.

In stressful, uncertain moments like this, people look up to their national leaders for assurance, for psychological comfort, for emotional stability, for guidance, for good cheer. Most leaders have lived up to this expectation. They have addressed their compatriots in national broadcasts and become consolers in chief. Well, except Nigeria’s Muhammadu Buhari.



Amid spiraling apprehension about the new coronavirus and the uptick in the number of infections in the country, there has been unnervingly loud silence from the man who calls himself Nigeria’s “president.”




potentially one of the world’s worst pandemics has been so disturbing that citizens have been literally pleading to hear from the man who claims to be their president.

Even Nigeria’s infamously pliant, “rubber-stamp” Senate, which takes pride in being at the beck and call of the executive, has called on Buhari to address the nation. But one of Buhari’s media aides said such calls from the senate amounted to “populism and cheap politics”!

Why can’t Buhari address the nation? What’s the big deal about a 5-minute (or less) televised address to the nation that someone will write for him? Well, the truth, which I’ve been pointing out since 2018, is that Buhari is too steeped in battles with his own personal demons to care about Nigerians.

Buhari is not well. A televised broadcast, however short, might expose and aggrandize this fact more forcefully than ever before. Notice that in previous broadcasts that his handlers felt compelled to ask him to make, he evinced noticeably low energy and slurred his speech.

On November 23, 2018, I tweeted about my encounter with a doctor who met Buhari in a non-medical context and told me, based on his treatment of and interactions with dementia patients, he was convinced that Buhari has dementia which, as I’ve pointed out before, is often characterized by repetitiveness, unawareness, mental deterioration, impaired memory, diminished quality of thought, slurred speech, and finally complete helplessness.

When I first pointed this out, a few people thought I was being malicious in the service of my opposition to his reelection. Now even close aides of Buhari admit in private that I was right. People who have had a chance to interact with him recently also concede that Buhari appears to be wracked by an irreversible mental decline and loss of control.

He stays no longer than 10 minutes at Federal Executive Council meetings and goes there only for photo ops to deceive Nigerians into thinking that he is in charge when, in fact, he is a sick puppy. It isn’t his fault that he is sick. Anyone, including me, can fall ill. I concede that. But Nigeria is too complex to be governed by a sick, insentient person.

If Buhari had any honor, he would have declined to seek a second term on account of his health and for the love of the people of Nigeria. But his ambition and greed are greater than his patriotism and integrity.

Now, Nigeria is officially “presidentless” not just because Buhari’s current mandate is brazenly rigged and therefore illegitimate but because Buhari has no mental presence to rule. Abba Kyari, his Chief of Staff, no longer conceals the fact that he is the one who calls the shots in the Presidential Villa—and in Nigeria. A March 10, 2020 news report in ThisDay, for instance, said Kyari was in Germany on behalf of Nigeria to hold talks with Siemens “on improved power” in the country.

That’s not the duty of a chief of staff. But anyone who doesn’t know by now that Abba Kyari is Nigeria’s unelected (perhaps unelectable) surrogate president must be living under the rock. But because he isn’t officially the president, not to mention the fact that he has severe speech impediments, he can’t address the nation.

So the first reason Buhari won’t address the nation is that doing so would expose his state of mental and physical health. A sick, ghostly “president” slurring his speech in a televised national broadcast would probably spook the nation more ominously than coronavirus can.

The second reason is that Buhari is in a grievous bind now. He was supposed to go to London for a medical checkup in February, but the leak of this information on social media and on fringe news websites caused his handlers to postpone it by a few weeks— after, as usual, declaring that the leak was “fake news.”

The halt of all air travel to the UK—and, of course, the fear of contracting coronavirus in London—has ensured that Buhari can’t go to London. This must be one moment when he wished he built at least one state-of-the-art hospital in Abuja.

Given the horrible state of healthcare in Nigeria (which was made even worse by Buhari’s serial neglect of the sector in the time he has been “president”) and the inability to go on medical tourism anywhere else in the world, I would be shocked if Buhari is even remotely in a position to address the nation.

So Nigerians eager to hear from the man who says he is their president will have to contend with dishonest presidential press releases that purport to emanate from Buhari’s words, but which are actually ordered by Abba Kyari. Yemi Osinbajo is of no consequence any more.

Of course, even when Buhari was healthy and mentally alert, empathy, compassion, and fellow feeling were not his strong suits. He is a solipsistic narcissist who has no capacity for vicarious identification with the plight of people who are not directly related to him.

So it’s unfair to implicate only his physiological and mental decline in his insensitivity to the anxieties and dread of everyday people. His ill health only brought his cold detachment from people into bolder, more visible relief.

To be fair to him, though, people who are worshipped by as many stupid people as Buhari has been worshipped most of his adult life tend to suffer compassion deficit. A lot of his worshippers are now realizing that they wasted their emotions on a man who doesn’t care a tinker’s damn about them. But the most hopeless of them persist in their folly.

In Nigeria, the new coronavirus isn’t just threatening people and upending their ways of life, it is also exposing the crying leadership deficit in the country and the fraud that is packaged as the country’s “president.” I hope we all come out of this alive.

In Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State capital, some youths from six States in the Southwest region, yesterday protested against the formation of Amotekun, the Western Nigerian Security Network. 



The group under the banner of ‘Yoruba Appraisal Forum’ that spearheaded the protest, wanted Amotekun scrapped across the six states of Ekiti, Oyo, Osun, Lagos, Ondo and Ogun States to avoid future calamity.

However, it was revealed by the group that they had uncovered alleged plot to use Amotekun to destabilize the South West and ultimately the entire country, in 2023.

They demanded that the entire Yoruba race would be endangered in 2023 with the existence of Amotekun. They even predicted that the network will be hijacked by politicians for insidious mission in the coming elections.





Some of the placards they flaunted read:

"Amotekun Will Turn our Youths to Militia Group”,

"Amotekun Can Bring Proliferation of Arms"

"Amotekun Motive, Shine Your Eyes"




While addressing journalists at Ajilosun area where the protest was held, the group’s coordinator, Mr. Adeshina Animasaun, said the project of Amotekun was a laudable one, but insisted that it has been hijacked by those nursing ambition in 2023.

Animasaun appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to rejig the country’s security architecture to prevent resurgence of what he called ‘militia groups’ with tendencies to pose dangers to the lives of the people.

“We call on President Buhari to use his good office to call the Southwest Governors to order by prevailing on them not to sign the Amotekun bills into laws yet, until proper checks about such security are done”, he said.

The group faulted the hurried manners at which the governors conducted the public hearings leading to formation of Amotekun, saying: “it ought to have been done senatorially, rather than bringing few people to the state capitals to contribute in a programme that lasted for 30 minutes”



“The Southwest governors should be dissuaded from innocently equipping and funding a security outfit that some unscrupulous and wicked individuals have planned to use against the same people the governors have sworn to protect.

“The governors should be made to realize that they should not allow themselves to be railroaded into taking an action they will regret later.

“The nation’s security agencies like police National Intelligence Agency, Defence Intelligence Agency, Department of State Services (DSS) need to profile the current promoters of Amotekun security outfit with a view to ascertaining its real membership and their original intention”, he said.

The group urged the handlers to take note of the warnings issued by Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, former Kaduna State Government, Balarabe Musa, and the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore and others about the hazards inherent in Amotekun.

Having said that, I want to commend Enugu State Government for her security initiative. Fulani herdsmen and bandits v taken over every where. Some of our elites v refused to speak out because of their interests in a nation where some people r untouchable The government can engage the youths in security and community policing. Also, research should be embarked on to discovered or done to get crops that r unfriendly to the fulani cows. I believe the igbos v the potential to develop a crop that if spread or planted as a Defence crop and the cow goes close to it it will run mad and berserker. Imagine when this crop is spread using drone on a way or farmland, no one will advice the fulani to change location. Because you will see cows dieing in 10s.This is a simple way of managing these people

Enough of the noise on the civil war museum. When people are talking about the millions of people that were killed in the war, innocent civilians, we r here elevating genocide by shifting attention to technology. All you see about the museum were efforts by the people to resist the pogrom in the vicinity. If we say "Never Again", then we need to look into the atrocities that were committed by Nigerians against this people. As I speak, many young girls were kidnapped and taken away without any trace. Little girls raped, and young boys killed just at any slight issue. The Holocaust is being remembered today not on fake technology but on the inhuman treatment meted to innocent Jews. This should be the Biafra narrative, and not some foolish war museum.

Ever since Amokekun issue came up, SW Muslims have directly and indirectly kicked against it without considering the reactions of some of us Christian Yorubas..

SW muslins have once again proved to us that religion plays a very strong role in Yoruba land.. They will always tell you that Yoruba is Yoruba if things are going their way, but quick to bring religion when they think that things are not going the way they wish ..

The Coalition of Progressive Yoruba Islamic Groups,
(COPYIG), has accused the leader of the Muslim Rights
Concern, (MURIC), Prof Ishaq Akintola of desperately working
for Fulani Caliphate to destabilise Yorubaland and spur the
region into an inter-religious conflict.
The group said Akintola has dedicated his entire lifetime to
the promotion of religious distrust, cruel hatred, violence,
armed rebellion against Yoruba people and their history and
religious bigotry.
The group in a statement on Monday signed by its National
Coordinator, Mallam Mukthar Abdullahi Okunade said Akintola
has no other agenda except to set Yorubaland and Nigeria on
the path of blood letting and primitive trend of avarice.
"It is unfortunate that one Akintola who leads MURIC has
consistently fan embers of disunity in Yorubaland hiding under
the guise of Islam to set brothers against brothers,
communities against communities and men against women.
His thoughts are nothing but a "reflection of the ideology of
Daech" the coalition stated describing him as a shameless
paid agent of the Fulani caliphate.
The group said Akintola is a big threat to the Southern Nigeria
expecially the Yoruba, Igbo and South South who owes the
key to the liberation of Southern Nigeria from Fulani
stranglehold"
Okunade said Akintola appears to consistently raise funds
from Fulani extremist groups who bankroll all his press
statements and his evil plots adding that his lifetime wish is to
see Yorubaland turn into another Lebanon.
'Akintola has no followers. He is an extremist and a sadist. He
appears to have s*icide instint. We urge him not to attempt to
drag the entire Yoruba along on his pathway of mischief and
treachery against the Yoruba people".
The group asked the Lagos State University to sack him
saying that his ideas are injurious to the search fod
knowledge in any decent society.
The coalition said Akintola has been promoting the invasion
of Yorubaland by armed gangs and potential t*rrorists all for
personal financial gain.
The group said Akintola lacks the capacity for clear and
logical thinking and that his ability to reason in an orderly
manner is a big problem to him.
"In his riotous mind, blind rage and in a show of complete
lack of wisdom, he claimed Amotekun is a Christian outfit.
This shows how shallow and irresponsible Akintola is. The
head of Amotekun in Ogun State is a retired AIG, Subair; the
man in charge of Amotekun in Ondo State is Aliu Tijani, a
retired senior police officer, the person in charge of Amotekun
in Ekiti State is Chief Jinadu. Aare Ona Kakanfo Iba Gani
Adams who has been supporting Amotekun is a Muslim. THE
Alaafin Oyo who backs Amotekun is a Muslim. We caution
Akintola to halt his hatred for the Yoruba Nation.We urge him
to learn to read books and bail himself out of his state of
psychological disorder."
The group added "If he fails to repent, the God of Yoruba
Nation will seek revenge against his plot to distort Yoruba
civilisation."

We yoruba moslem are majority in yoruba land. For many year we v been marginalized by the Yoruba christains but thanks to President mohammadu buhari for listening to our voice. You r a big liar if you say there is nothing in the south east. The interiors of South East are far better than that of South west. Though the infrastructures r individually established but the feelings between those in the city and the village people r the same. Apart from Lagos, no place you can stay in South west. But in South East you see Aba, Umuahia, Owerri, Onitsha, not mentioning Nnewi, Nkpor, Enugu amongst others. Notwithstanding the rate at which Igbo people travel, their interiors are like cities. Good houses, bore holes, electricity etc. I v gone to the south east and South west for works, honestly they r poles apart. Yorubas r hardly visit home, only the old people r there, with subsistence farming as occupation. The young ones r in UK or Lagos. This is fact.

You r right my brother but that will come later. Once we v been able to establish a nation, igbos will reduce their habitation in remote areas in the world. They will remain in big cities and establish whatever they want. If they happen to go into remote areas, it means what is taking them there is big time. Waiting for igbo nation is a process, however we need to develop our communities. I grew up to discover that igbos v always done things on community basis Community secondary school, Community square, Community primary school, Community land, Community security, Community service. It was through this means igbo and igbo land got developed. Also our governors should be opened to innovations. As one of the most traveled tribes in the world, we should bring home the experience we got outside. Our governors should collaborate on infrastructure. Are you saying no igbo student can build a CCTV camera that will be mounted high to oversee a large area? Are you saying we cannot build a satellite base? Amotekun? Who is going to finance it? Is it Lagos or oil money from South South and South East? If the Yorubas will be fast in buying cars and providing facilities to an illegal organization, I think they should channel same support to the Nigerian police, Army, DSS and see if crime will not disappeared.

While I feel your pain and that of the entire yoruba people, I want to tell you that igbos will and can never suffer. Some of us v been saying some things on this forum regarding yoruba attitude. Yoruba cared less about the fulani killings in Enugu, Agatu, Plateau, Southern Kaduna, Benue and Taraba States. When these killings were on, other tribes lamented buy yoruba politicians were busy strategizing for politics and enjoying the available slots for appointments in the govt. Surprisingly, Tinubu and Osinbajo, as well as Yoruba pastors berated others who complained. They even said Nigeria was OK and need no restructure. The worst hit were our igbo brothers who v been shouting and fighting on these course. Now the her has come home finally. Yorubas can no longer pretend to live in denial of the killings in their domain. Fulani kidnapping started early in yoruba land but for political sake, the people kept quite. Where is Olu Falae? No one attacks him, and he now knows that the rain doesn't fall on him alone but on everyone.
Well, better to wake up from sleep any time than not to wake up at all.
