@Malvino

Tell that to the Marines sad sad sad

There are Nigerians in the UK who are successful and they're mostly running their own businesses after working for some years. Wake up from your deep sleep sad sad. In Britain, anything is possible if you've got the guts and winning mentality. I've heard of a Nigerian couple without papers who own 3 solid homes in Greater London. They are strictly into business and ship a lot of stuff to Nigeria to sell. They have good friends who helped them to secure documents they use to get things done. I was told they would soon be given their indefinite Stay for spending so many years in Britain. It all depends on the friends you have and contacts. As much as I don't support illegality, once you've made the mistake of being illegal, you can always find something to do and sort yourself out as time goes on. Cheers.

The title of this thread amuses me  smiley smiley These days, more Anti-Britain threads are popping up on Nairaland.  There is a lot of generalization on Nairaland these days. I love Nigeria and I have always been doing my best to enhance Change in Nigeria. However, I will not badmouth Nigerians living in Britain. The other day, someone on Nairaland said he saw Nigerians looking gloomy in a church in London. It is very bad to always highlight one part of a story without examining the other part.  If Nigeria has been good to someone who returned from Britain after living unsuccessfullly there, it does not mean all Nigerians living and working in Britain are wasting their time there. Britain might not be a paradise but things work there. The Europeans have developed systems that keep their countries afloat despite the recession. There is still racism in Europe but the respective governments of European nations are tackling the menace. Lets look at the pros and cons of living in Britain:

1. EMPLOYMENT: Can anyone tell me any concrete efforts being made by the Nigerian Government to create jobs for the people? Is there any dedicated website for jobseekers in Nigeria? I am talking about a government funded website which has all kinds of information concerning employment matters and jobs. The UK Government has websites that help people get jobs and there are Jobcentres all over Britain. Do the research yourself online.

2. POVERTY:  Though the recession is strong in Britain, it remains the 6th richest country in the world. You might have read reports about poverty in Britain but the reality is that a good number of poor people in Britain live better lives than Middle Class Nigerians. There are a lot of benefits put in place to help the disadvantaged in Britain. Tell me, how much has the Nigerian Government given to you as social benefits since you were born? What has the Nigerian Government really done for your children? For those living in Nigeria, do you know your Local Government Chairman? When did your Local Government Chairman communicate with you last?  Do you receive Monthly Magazines about events in your LG monthly? I need answers to these questions.

3 SECURITY: Crime does occur in Britain but the Police responds 85% of the time when you call them. At least they will get in touch with you 24 hrs after you call, if it is not an emergency. The Police in Britain is well funded and maintained and the officers are paid well. They are also motivated to do their job. What about the Nigerian Police Force? Can you bank on our Policemen to ensure your safety in Nigeria? I believe God is the greatest protector but many Nigerian cops are not well trained and equipped to do their work. SIA workers in Britain earn more than our Policemen.

I could go on and on but lets stop badmouthing a nation that has accepted so many foreigners [ with many of them becoming citizens as time goes on ] and gives them a chance to better their lives. With the likes of Fashola. change is coming gradually to Nigeria. However, we have a long way to go. The 2011 elections will determine whether more Nigerians will keep trying to flee to Europe and America. The system that obtains in Nigeria is bad and out of touch with the modern world. Cheers.

She will be sorted out soon and will most likely be granted legal status in the UK. Her story which was reported by the Evening Standard is very strong [ no matter how fishy it might seem ] and it will hugely help her application. I know her local MP will be interested in the outcome of her application. Hmn.

@nellaluv

You've touched a raw nerve, dearie. Emem Ema is beautiful in her own way cool cool Yeah, she might have some masculine features but she is a woman. Queen Latifah and Nonchalant [ Both American Hip-Hop artistes ] also have masculine features but men still chase them. God created everyone to have a kind of beauty others do not have. We are all unique, you know. Thanks, though. I fancy Emem cool cool cool

I laugh in Ibibio grin grin grin

How can celebrities like Onyeka Onwenu, Olu Jacobs and Joke Silva anchor an adventure like series like the Gulder Ultimate Search? They might have huge personalities but age is not on their side anymore. I guess Rooneyboy is trying to pull our legs smiley smiley

Genevieve is alright for the role she has been chosen for, though I prefer Emem Ema [KUSH] to her. I'm sure no one will mess with Emem when she issues orders because she knows showbiz like the back of her palms. Emem is a thoroughbred in the entertainement world. However, I believe Genevieve will rise up to our expectations. Afterall, what do shows have producers for? Cheers.
TV/MoviesRe: Genevieve Hosts "Gulder Ultimate Search Celebrity Showdown" by Redman44(m): 12:00pm On Mar 03, 2010
@Rooneyboy,

The celebrity participants will undergo some training and fitness classes before the show begins.  However, who else can be fitter than Obesere with all the energy he expends on the stage while performing cheesy cheesy? Anyway, I know the organizers know what they are doing. Cheers.

@All Threaders,

Genevieve Nnaji will do well as Anchor for the show. She's not a small girl and she's articulate enough to handle the responsibilities given to her. We need to water down the Omotola-Genevieve rivalry on Nairaland sad sad. Cheers.
TV/MoviesRe: Genevieve Hosts "Gulder Ultimate Search Celebrity Showdown" by Redman44(m): 11:02am On Mar 03, 2010
@Rooneyboy,

The organizers of the show know what they're doing. They chose the celebrity participants to appeal to different segments of the society smiley smiley Abass Akande Obesere will appeal to residents of Mushin, Ibadan and Fuji music lovers all over the country.  Fuji Music has a huge following among Muslims in Southern Nigeria. Daddy Showkey was chosen for obvious reasons- his personality and roots [ which will attract a lot of viewers ]. Daddy Showkey and Obesere are very funny artistes even in real life. They will add a lot of comedy and flavour to the show. I just hope the Gulder Ultimate Search Celebrity Showdown Production Crew will be able to tame the egos of the celebrities who'll be participating.  They all have to be briefed properly before the show starts.

As an afterthought, I feel Nigerian Breweries should have considered throwing Don Segun Arinze and  Chidi Mokeme into the mix. The two of them would have brought a lot of deviousness into the show.  They are both hard guys, you know. Anyway, the show goes on.  I want Obesere to win cheesy cheesy cheesy
TV/MoviesRe: Genevieve Hosts "Gulder Ultimate Search Celebrity Showdown" by Redman44(m): 1:44am On Mar 03, 2010
It seems a lot of Company Directors and big wigs visit Nairaland or are even forum members. My idea for a female anchor for the Gulder Ultimate Search was lifted from Nairaland. Some of the names I mentioned i.e Funke Akindele, Genevieve Nnaji et al are even going to participate in the reality show. Genevieve Nnaji is okay as the anchor but to me, Emem Ema [ Ex KUSH member ] is the best female personality that can play the anchor. She's got all it takes to excel in the role- intellect, diction, courage, carriage, personality and knowledge of the Media Industry. Hmn.

NIGERIA BREWERIES cool cool cool You need to pay me for my ideas you lifted, you know.

Cheers though.

This is really Baaaaaaaaaaaaaad sad sad sad It just goes to show that no condition is permanent in life. I feel it is high time for those who are still in the university system to start thinking of becoming entrepreneurs when they graduate. Youths should also learn to acquire skills that will be useful to them later in life. These are skills they can make money with e.g, Computer Graphic skills, painting, Adire making, Animal Husbandry [ Breeding Rabbits, Cockrels and Layers, Pigs, Turkeys, Fish etc ], driving skills etc etc. A word is enough for the wise.
TravelRe: How Bright Or Bleak Is Overstaying On A Visiting Visa In The Uk by Redman44(m): 6:32pm On Feb 24, 2010
So this thread still continues cool cool Let me just add this:

I remember those days in the late 80's and early 90's when the phrase '' Bobo ti ja '' was very popular in Nigeria. In my area of Lagos then, Ikeja/Omole to be specific, it was common to hear of one of the guys in the area who had travelled to Europe or America. As soon as a dude travelled out, the news would spread around the hood. From Barber Shops to Snooker joints, guys would be discussing how Ben Or Fatai was hustling in Germany, England or Spain. Poverty was hammering guys and their families then. I remember those days of pain and hunger. Everyone was looking for a way out of the crazy situation. Before you know it, some of the guys who travelled out will start helping their families. I don't how they got to Europe sad sad That's not my concern here, but I usually notice that their family houses suddenly gets a new coat of paint. Then two good cars would appear in the compound. Ben's dad will suddenly start to cruise around the neighbourhood in a Mercedez Benz V-booth or Clean Toyota Car. Fatai's dad will soon become the talk of the area as he starts building another house in their compound.

Fatai and Ben will out of love drop their numbers with some of the guys in the area. Pronto, dudes will call and ask Ben and Fatai how they did it. Then some months later, we would wake up to the news that Femi and Shina had found their way to Austria and Belgium cool cool Other guys in the area will start planning their own departures. Some will place their hopes in the Green Card lottery with fasting and prayers.  A few of the guys who were university and Polytechnic Students got killed due to cult activities. After about 5-6 years, Fatai and Ben will suddenly reappear in Nigeria. They have changed physically and speak with a strange accent. Fatai came back with a white wife and mongrel kids. He has gotten his permanent residence in Holland. Ben on his part had claimed asylum in Spain and had been granted Spanish papers. Femi and Shina were still battling their way out in Europe with Shina moving to Ireland to get his papers there.  Some guys got deported and a few were jailed for drug trafficking in Europe.

These days things have changed and the Embassies of European countries have toughened up their visa requirements. Oluwole documents are not helping much these days. One thing I noticed is that there is much awareness about travelling nowadays. I meet guys that travelled back in those days from time to time and they are doing well now. Some of them are now British, Irish, Spanish, German and Austrian citizens. I also know some dudes that did not leave Nigeria but they are successful businessmen and professionals in Nigeria.  I also happen to know guys who are in Europe with permanent residence and EU status who are not doing well at all. They're  fathering children all around England like rabbits. Some of them have spiritual and mental issues.

The painful thing is that Nigeria today is in a worse situation than the Nigeria of the 80's and 90's. The standard of living of Nigerians is not getting any better.  That is why I think the exodus of Nigerians to Europe and North America  will at the end of the day turn out to be a blessing in disguise for Nigeria. We just need a good leader who wants to change things and who has the support of the Governors and Ministers. If the electricity and security problems of Nigeria is solved, half of Nigerians abroad [ irrespective of their status ] will jump on the next flights home. What we should be thinking of is how to use forums like Nairaland to bring a change to the Nigerian polity. Do you know the change we can make if 60% of Nigerians abroad can donate £20/$20 each to Pat Utomi's campaign machine or to a serious party that wants to change things? This is how the Iranians and people of Tibet are helping to bring democracy and autonomy to their countries. These are issues we need to start thinking and debating about on Nairaland.  God bless us all wherever we are. Amen.

My last post here:

I'm playing the devil's advocate. The poster should not come and overstay in the UK. However, anyone who is on this thread and has overstayed due to one reason or the other should not give up in their bid to get their papers. If you don't have papers to work, do some trading online [ E-bay, Alibaba ]. All you'll need is a relative or friend to help you out with a bank account you can link to paypal. Sniff around and you'll notice moneymaking opportunities. Above all, you've made a mistake by staying back, but don't hang yourself. God knows what you're going through. And he'll surprise you if you cry out to him. I'm outta here. Cheers.

Dodgy Asian friends? Who is honest these days? Is it the politicians who are milking the people dry? I'm laughing in Bangladeshi grin grin grin You need to hear stories coming out of the town halls across Britain. Let the Conservatives come in in a few months time and you'll know what being dodgy means. Come and see how Britons are longing to go and work in their Embassies all over the world. Check out the good life they live in Lagos with money they've gotten from visa applications. They've even hired Nigerian staff to make their work easier while they just stick in the visa in the passports. They don't pay tax as consular officials and they live like Kings and Queens in African nations.

@Justwise, every situation in life has roots in other situations. Broaden your knowledge and you'll get my drift. No one should have the aim of coming to the UK to overstay. It could be a suicide mission. At the end of its sojourn abroad, the dog will find its way home one way or the other. Let the dog gnaw.

I am not supporting people overstaying their visa but sometimes strange things happen in life. Some people are destined to become great irrespective of how they got to advanced countries. All what destiny was waiting for them to do was to find their way to Europe or America. Then destiny takes over the rest. Life is strange and what happens at the end of the day is manifest destiny. I've heard of a case where a guy was grassed on by another African living in the same house. The Congolese guy snitched on the Nigerian guy to the Home Office. Pronto, UK Border officials came to arrest him in the house. However, I feel something happened while the immigration officers were on their way. Maybe they decided to leave the guy alone or after checking his room and questioning him, they found out that the guy was intelligent or has a sort of skill. Anyway, they did not arrest the guy. According to the story, the immigration officers were looking at each other somehow and were puzzled. They later left in their van. When the Congolese guy came back at night. He was shocked that the Naija guy had not been arrested. We live in a strange world and when destiny has a plan for you, no one can stop it. I don't support Illegality but let the little dog gnaw. Cheers.

@Justwise,

I'm not talking about illegal working or workers. Have you been in a meeting where Asians are discussing? First, all the women will be sent upstairs and the men will remain behind. Then you will start hearing about how the newcomer will be helped. Or how Adil or Depak Mansoor needs a loan to buy the next house to his shop smiley smiley I just admire the bond between those Asians. There are always exceptions to the rule. I have Asian friends. Siddon there and keep displaying your ignorance. You're too small to battle online with. Its better you go to bed. Cheers.

@justwise

Siddon there and keep asking how someone without papers will survive in the UK sad sad So you think everyone in UK is working with their NI? I don't like ignorant people and I'm not ready to go into long debates with you because you'll be floored. Do you know how many markets there are in UK? I'm talking about the open markets. Go and talk to those selling stuff there. You'll understand what I'm saying. Go to Tilbury Port in Essex and see the loads of money being made there. Investigate the immigrant status of the Blacks and Asians controlling the place, if you can. I have a Bangledeshi friend who runs a restaurant in East London. I did some media work for him in the past. He gave me a ride one day and told me his story. How he entered Holland without papers, how he got his papers and how he moved to England in 2005. This guy was practically doing business in Amsterdam without papers before getting his stay there. He was running the show while the white Dutch guys were bringing business to him. Now he's in Britain legally and he has a cool restaurant he's running. Three other Indian-Bangladeshi guys are working for him. I know his assistants might not all have papers but they help themselves. They are all nice to me because I give the guy tips on how to boost sales at the place. Guys, the illuminati run the show. The taxes are there to be collected from all these businesses with faceless owners. Houses and rooms need to be rented by immigrants [ and most of the landlords don't really care about status. They want their money ]. The economy benefits more in the end. The people in power are controlled by the guys behind the curtain. I hope you get my drift. Cheers.

I don't know what Nairaland is turning into these days.  Look I'm not supporting the breaching of immigration rules and laws in Europe or any other country. However, why do Nigerians like washing their dirty linen in public. You will never find sensitive threads like these on Indian or Brazilian forums. Sincerely, do you know the number of Asian overstayers in Europe? They are even more than Nigerians but they know how to sort themselves out without letting the world know what they are up to sad sad sad  Everyone in life has a manifest destiny and no matter what situation one finds him or herself in, the will of God will be done. However, what pisses me off is the way we show off our unclothedness to the world. Haba, we don't even assist ourselves in foreign lands like the Asians do. That is why they're progressing at a faster rate than Nigerians. Is it not the bible that says we would see kings walking on foot and slaves riding on horses? Is it not happening in Britain where some people without papers are living like kings [ not doing fraud or crime ] while those with documents are still doing 9-5? Go and ask those Asian shopkeepers and Pizza shop owners their history in Europe and you'll be shocked with what you'll discover.

The bangladeshi people are opening solid restaurants and making cool bucks while helping their own people [ Papers or no papers ] while we love coming on Nairaland to tell the world what we are up to. Call me what you want to call me, but I've told the bitter truth. You won't find this kind of thread on Asian forums.  Is it not the same Nigeria where 1000 people have been sacked by a bank? I'm not supporting overstaying but the poo happens sometimes. The little dog might have misbehaved but it deserves a chance to sort things out. Let the dog gnaw!!!

Sincerely, it is not really possible to point at one university in Nigeria and say it is the best. However, some universities are consistently in the news and they've got a solid pedigree. OAU and UNIBADAN are outstanding universities in Nigeria. I don't know the state of UNILORIN'S Halls of Residence now, but back in 1999 when I visited the school, their halls of residence was nothing to write home about cry cry. UI used to have the same problem of congestion and poor facilities concerning its halls of residence, but in 2001/2002, all the halls on the UI campus were renovated with a 500 Million Naira grant from the Federal Government. Peeps should give UI her respect!!! I make bold to say there is no Female Hall of Residence  in Nigerian Universities that beats UI's Queen Elizabeth Hall cool cool The Hall is the first Hall of Residence you'll see when coming into the UI Campus. Its architecture is splendid.

To me, OAU structures and buildings are the best in Nigeria. The guys that designed the infrastructure of OAU are geniuses.  However, UI has some solid buildings too. The Social Science faculty of UI is really great in design and facilities. What about the new law faculty theatre or the Faculty of Engineering lecture theatres smiley smiley UI has a Zoo that is getting better yearly. There is a village on the Northern part of the UI Campus that has been there since the days of Alaafin Sango. So when people are talking of landmass, I'm just laughing grin grin grin . UI is the only university in West Africa that has an American Library section on its campus. There are different books on America in the place and the US Government is interested in the project. I saw UNILORIN'S Department of History offices and I'm just laughing. UNIBADAN'S School of History [ University of Ibadan's History Department ] is the best in Africa. Look at the scholars we've produced and they're still teaching @UI:

Prof JF Ade-Ajayi [ World Renowned Historian and Researcher]
Prof Toyin Falola [ Great Scholar now in the USA ]
Dr Kingta Princewill [ Genius ]
Dr Christopher Ogbogbo  [ You need to hear this man speak and lecture ]
Prof Bolanle Awe
Late Pastor Bimbo Odukoya et al

I'm also a product of the Ibadan School of History and I can hold my own anywhere in the world. Each Nigerian university has unique students that are good irrespective of the ranking of their schools. However, some schools are just outstanding. Cheers.
EducationRe: Unilorin Leads Nigerian Varsities In World Ranking by Redman44(m): 6:11pm On Feb 22, 2010
@baslone, have you been to UI recently? UI is not a state university, mind you. I graduated from Unibadan in 2005 and while I was writing my Long Essay, a lot of developmental projects were embarked upon. I don't believe in the rating that placed Unilorin above the likes of UI, OAU and UNILAG. Fine, UNILORIN is a good school but which univeristy won the Zain African Challenge? Students from the University of Ibadan beat all comers to the title smiley smiley smiley Where was UNILORIN during that academic and intellectual competition? I served in Akure, Ondo State, and I came across many UNILORIN graduates. I'm sorry to say many of them are not really good. They learn and study by rote [ studying for academic purposes only ] and not for personal development. We did not have many UI Corpers in Ondo State, but as few as we were, we made a huge impact during our service year. On my floor alone in my hall of residence [ Zik Hall ], we had five 1st class graduates cool cool cool, not to talk of the whole hall.

@becomrich,

Na wa for you o. When did the size of a university make it better than others? UI is also a big university with a dam and a village in it. It even has a functional zoo and swimming pool. Abeg, leave matter.

I and my UNIBADAN camp mates used to laugh at them. The University of Ibadan might have old buildings, but the products of the institution are mostly intelligent. And these days, the current VC of UI is changing the landscape of the university. Things are looking up at UI. Cheers.

We don't need Trappatoni as the Eagles coach. He can't lift the standard of Nigerian football. I just pray the old man will not meet the waterloo of his coaching career in Nigeria. NFF have started dropping names again. The men at the glass house are not serious. It just shows that the NFF does not have a research unit that monitors coaches in different parts of the world. We need a coach that is technically gifted and very disciplined. He does not have to be a popular coach, but he will be a coach that knows what he's doing. The kind of coach we need might be coaching teams in the Brazilian or the Dutch league [ Eredivise] and must have won some competitions like Copa America etc.

Above all, the problem of Nigerian football transcends the issue of hiring a coach. It is a systemic problem which has roots deeply embedded in the Glass House. We need to bring in men of vision into the Glass House. Cheers.

SportsRe: Nigeria Sack Amodu, Draw Up Hiddink-led Shortlist by Redman44(m): 11:04pm On Feb 06, 2010
Below is my blueprint for Nigerian football:

South Africa 2010 World Cup: Samson Siasia and Austin Eguavoen should be appointed coaches of the Eagles to the World Cup. The NFF should give the duo the target of getting at least to the 2nd round of the tournament. We should not expect a great outing at the mundial because we do not have a good team and committed players.

Super Eagles Technical Adviser and Coach: Hiring big names and celebrity coaches will not help our cause. Clemens Westerhof and Bonfrere Jo were nobodies until they came to Nigeria. Yet these dutchmen played a big role in the development of Nigerian football. Westerhof unearthed unknown players like Finidi George, Efan Ekoku, Isaac Semitoje [ he's better than the defenders we have today, yet he was spotted in the local league ], Moses Kpakor, Ben Iroha, Friday Elahor etc. Bonfrere used his intelligence to help us win Olympic Gold in 1996. We need a  foreign coach who's good technically and is development oriented. He should be able to build 3 Super Eagles teams from the scratch.  The coach should be very strict like Fabio Capello and should be able to comb the local league for good players. This foreign coach should be ready to spend most of his time in Nigeria. He'll be allowed to take his annual leave but Nigeria will be his home during his tenure as coach of the Super Eagles. I'll prefer it if this new coach is from Italy, Holland or Brazil.  It does not matter if he's coaching a Division 2 club, what matters is that he has a blueprint for Nigerian footie and he is really good at what he does.

Tapping Into Our Diaspora Talent: It is high time we start combing Europe and America for more Osaze Odemwingies. There are many players of Nigerian origin in Europe and America. Some of them are children of Nigerian parents or one of their parents is a Nigerian. However, they were born in foreign countries. They might not have come to Nigeria before but they are somehow Nigerian due to their origin. If they're gifted, we need them. These players could prove to be an asset to us.

Disbanding The NFF: Yeah, FIFA might be protecting Sani Lulu and his gang, but Nigerians can demonstrate against this inept bunch of administrators. We need fresh hands in the Glass House. We need men who can see visions and who have ideas. Kojo Williams has to come back. We need people like Waidi Akanni, Mutiu Adepoju et al in the NFF. God help us. Amen.
SportsRe: Nigeria Sack Amodu, Draw Up Hiddink-led Shortlist by Redman44(m): 9:08pm On Feb 06, 2010
Okay, they've gotten rid of Amodu Shuaibu finally smiley smiley. And I can see the names being bandied around- Bruno Metsu, Louis Van Gaal, Guus Hiddink et al.  Even the combination of these three coaches will not save Nigerian football cry cry. We have a systemic problem that needs to be sorted out first.  A panel enquiry has to be set up to look at what got us to where we are at the moment. Our problems started after Mali 2002 African Nations cup. It was this same Amodu Shuaibu that has just been sacked that was at the centre of the controversy. The fallout of that crisis led to the players like Victor Agali and Sunday Oliseh quitting the National team. Oliseh could have gone on to become a great captain of the Super Eagles, but that dream and build up was terminated by strong politicking and rash decisions taken by the NFF.  We should just go to the world cup with Samson Siasia and Austin Eguavoen as coaches of the Super Eagles.

After the World Cup, the search for a foreign coach with developmental instincts should start. We don't need celebrity coaches or big names. Hiddink will most likely sign another long term contract with the Russian football authorities in a matter of days. What is Bruno Metsu's pedigree currently? Metsu did well in Japan-Korea 2002 because Senegal had a golden generation of footballers then. Nigeria does not have up to six world cup class players currently. Lets stop fooling ourselves. We need a coach that will come and live in Nigeria, mix with Nigerians, attempt to learn our languages and get to make forays into our local league. We need a coach that will spot gifted players in obscure places in Nigeria. We don't want a short term thing. We need a coach that will tutor the Super Eagles for at least 4-6 years.  And I'm suggesting that the coach should choose Samson Siasia as his assistant and head scout.  Cheers.
