Unfortunately, Nigerians stick to unitary government system which breeds and feeds corruption in Nigeria.
Today, many foolish Nigerians believe that Buhari your ex-colleague shall stop corruption in Nigeria governed under the present lopsided political structure and unitary government system. Sorry for them.
Truth is that until Nigeria embraces fiscal federalism, corruption must continue to eat deeper into the country. Good one. They are just wasting their time. We know how this country works and what breaks it down constantly. |

In the event that there isn't a clear policy direction by the incoming government no one will import the stuff. Simple. On a wider scale if there was no subsidy, government come, government go, no one cares. If government had removed the thing like 5 years ago we will have benefit from the drop in oil prices. |

Why can't they simply import the product since the pricing regime is fully deregulated and they consume the stuff in extra large quantities. These are the reforms needed to break the monopoly of the cartels. |

Horlufemi: a Maize farmer harvested hectares of maize and sold all his harvest.
He then went to the market to buy pap(ogi), corn flakes, boiled corn and roasted corn to feed his family.
That is quintessential foolishness.
That is the case of Nigeria. The farmer is Nigeria, the maize is crude oil.
We are in trouble. That is not foolishness, it is wisdom. You are the one who needs wisdom. This line of jaundiced thought is so typical of Nigerians with their 'entitlement' mentality that robs them of the attitude of responsibility necessary for development. You my friend are not a farmer nor have the attitude of a farmer or businessman. When you start your business kindly do not pay market prices for the goods and services you consume from your enterprise and let's see whether you will not end up like Nigeria. Reprobate people. The US is the largest producer of wheat. They formed the NewYork and Chicago mercantile exchanges which essentially sets the world prices of wheat and other essentials meaning the average US farmer knows that he gets international prices for his wheat and the US Confec. Industry buys there. Americans pay for American produced commodities at international prices. It is the producers that are incentified to produce more. Consumers are taxed upon the 'real' prices they pay. That is how to develop. So go farming the right way pal. Shell's refineries in the US buy crude at international prices even though the US is the second biggest producer of crude. Why don't they subsidize. Black man and his ways. Chop, clean mouth and blame everyone else for tomorrow's poverty. Bloody entitlementists. |

hansad: And when knowledgeable people suggest to restructure Nigeria politically in a democracy for equitable political representation to enable the emergence of quality leadership - or return to fiscal federalism - the north refuses fiscal federalism which may reduce its oil earnings, the SW and north refuse political restructuring because they believe it may give people of southsouth and southeast equal rights to the rest of Nigeria.
So the sufferings from leadership failure continue in Nigeria. What more can I say after so many, many years. The only light at the end of the tunnel is that our suffering will be hard enough to make us want to leave Egypt enmasse no matter what the Pharoah's think. |

The ghost of our foolishness will haunt us for long.
A people that cannot endure and sacrifice for a while will forever live in bondage! QED!!! Well said. I could remember trying to get the point across on this forum time and time again on the need to end this subsidy thing, few accepted. Three years and trillions down the drain, we are now wiser, better prepared and ready to let our pet sins go. What a pity. This is the same pity every well meaning foreigner I spoke to felt for this country then and I'm so certain now. I keep on saying it, the biggest problem this country has, an anchor to its development, remains its people. All great nations are truly born in the crucibles of great suffering and immense tragedy. It was my conviction over a decade ago that any pacifist government was simply the enemy of the country and its people because Nigerians need a serious hard time to elevate our thinking. In this I commend the out-going government. NOI and SLS warned of all these things today and we still walked into the wall with our eyes wide open. What a reprobate people. |

coolzeal: Isn't it insane that Nigeria cannot refine its crude oil after decades of discovery? This is madness. The reason we cannot refine our crude is simple, we expect to pay less than what it is worth. In any system, when you attempt to get out more than you put in you kill it eventually. We didn't realise this in the seventies and eighties when we had a population of 70 million and 5 to 10million cars on the road and 2 million generating sets. Today this demand has doubled and in some cases quadroupled partly because the price of fuel has remained low, almost static (in dollar terms) while the price of crude has spiked to unprecedented levels severally over the years. What Nigerians have been enjoying is having our cake and eating it. You simply cannot seek the benefits of high oil prices and low fuel prices at the same time. That is cheating nature and is bound to backfire sooner than later. Who do you cheat as a yam farmer if the prices of yam goes high in the market and you are just eating the yams anyhow at home. No one but yourself. That is the history of Nigeria, a waster of her resources. That is why when it rains in this country, it pours. The gains of years of high crude prices have been thrown away. Now our lazy backsides cannot adjust to the realities that yams are no longer trending. Irresponsible people. And irresponsibility is the number one vector for poverty. Good thing Buhari is a man that will say it as it is. He only needs sound advice. |

hucienda: So why were people protesting back in 2012? Their eyes finally 'open' to the truth?
We now see for a fact that this subsidy may hold the fort for the short term but is definitely not sustainable long term.
We need working refineries in-country. Even if you have a hundred refineries working if you sell below international rates as we are paying now, the cheap fuel will simply find its way to international markets and we will end up subsidizing the world a.k.a throwing our resources away. And by the way it will still be scarce at home. We will remain as thin and haggard as subsistence farmers who cannot afford to eat their produce. The decision of the out-going government to indirectly force the subsidy issue to the front burner is a commendable one. The government has no beauty contest left to attend. It can say it as it is. This rot called subsidy just has to stop. The public must realise it is short-changing itself and right pricing is the only way to slow the bleeding of the nation's treasury. We must understand that in times of lack whether on a personal or national level you don't pamper yourself with excesses, you work hard, make sacrifices and most importantly drop bad habits of which the fuel subsidy regime is perhaps the worst. |

Akwaibom state budget for 2015 is 462 billion naira...
That's 370 billion dollars more than my state n u expect us to use our wealth wisely!!!
What's happening in Akwaibom ain't magic or hard work. It is not the quantum but what the money is used for. Poverty is caused by misappropriated wealth at some stage in the life of a man, family, community, State or Nation. Give Dangote that 93 billion and watch how he will create wealth and opportunity. That is what governors should be doing, running their states like businesses with a human face but I'm sure his convoys and entourages are as big and flamboyant as Akpabio's. In things like that he will conveniently ignore his smaller budget. |

But unfortunately it won't happen. The Hausa-Fulani/Yoruba hegemony of the old Nigeria hitherto thought dead is back alive and kicking. It will ensure that a President will never again emerge from the minorities no matter how competent or credible he or she is. That's our lot in Nigeria. Moving in circles. Flets: The Lower Niger just missed a massive opportunity by a hair strand.
Uyo has been upgraded and positioned the next economic hub in West Africa. Akpabio succeded in putting up all major infrastructures required for a thriving metropolis..... and just one more thing was required......... sign the Ibaka seaport project and concession and Akwaibom would have taken Africa by storm.
GEJ was playing it cool not to offend the south west who believes the port business is their resource. He was just waiting to get back in 2nd term to kick start the project. The south west and North saw this and had to fight as hard as they could.
However common sense can only be delayed and not denied. Why does Nigeria despite having over 700km coastline still operate only one Port only in the Lagos the south west?
Why was Atiku allowed a concession on Intels port in rivers state with import rates way higher than Lagos and only economical for oil and gas businesses?
Why has NPA refused to renew the dredging contracts for the ports in delta and crossriver state?
Why was a yoruba man few weeks back complaining that the NPA chairman position was the birthright of the southwest.
Nigeria remains a zoo and cesspit. Just because of the interest of a few yorubas, the economic potentials of a region is sidelined against common sense..... which will also help decongest lagos.
Some day that port will ressurect and population of lagos will be halved. That is the Nigerian State for you, sabotaging itself. The same people will then turn around and complain about bad interstate highways out of Lagos. Our problem remains structure. Re-structure, re-balance this country and you have effectively tackled 90% of our present and ever daunting challenges. |

Despite the undeserved high income from the government, the northen part of Nigeria still has the worst per capita income in Nigeria, which is telling. They are aware of this, and will try their best to oppose fiscal federalism. This just makes the future of Nigeria really bleak, socially, politically and economically. Now thy eyes are opened. So change government till eternity. As long as the structure is faulty this country can never develop. Nuff said. |

All those who bought into the privatisation are millionaires and billionaires in dollar terms (albeit through the black economy) so the money is not the problem but the framework of the entire process and the flawed philosophy of our energy industry that is heavily skewed in favour of oil and gas of Niger-Delta source.
