Politics / Re: Bombshell: South West Betrayed Awolowo In 1979-balarabe Musa by revomind(m): 7:01am On Sep 26, 2010
Akin-Egba:

What do you foresee as Jonathan has discarded zoning?

If the zoning is discarded, it practically means the North will continue to rule.

How will that happen?

Ok, let us go back to what gave birth to zoning. It is because the North dominated the presidency simply because of its number and its capacity to manage the federal character of the country. Let me tell you what happened. In 1978, the South, I mean the core South, decided that presidency should go to the North. Do you know why? Let me tell you, it is because the southern bourgeoisie saw the prospect of being rich because of the oil and they didn’t want the military to come back and deny them that opportunity to make money out of the oil, as it was all over the nation. They reckoned that to prevent the military from coming back, they needed a northerner to be the president. Do you know why? It is because they knew that a northerner has a greater political base than any other region to restrain the military from taking over. What happened was that the South forgot the dichotomy between the North and South. So, the South West and the South East, in particular, felt that the North must have the presidency.

And they brought a northerner that even the North would not reckon with. The South West, in particular, using its media, campaigned for Shehu Shagari, who didn’t see himself being anything more than a local government chairman. They made him beat Awolowo. The South West media ran down Awolow; the rich and powerful people of the South West ran down Awolowo to favour Shagari; the election was rigged in favour of Shagari.

We ought to have gone to a second ballot, as Shagari didn’t qualify, according to the constitution, but Richard Akinjide and his loyalists from the South West went to court and produced a two-third majority made in the court, which made Shagari president. In fact, what should have happened was a run-off between Shagari and Awolowo and Awolowo would have beaten Shagari because even the North would have voted for Awolowo because they knew Shagari could not make it. It could have also been a run-off between Waziri Ibrahim and Shagari, but instead of that, Obasanjo installed Shagari and the North East, South West, and the South East agreed because it was the decision of the South West bourgeoisie that let us put this man who has the constituency to restrain the military and who we can use because he didn’t have the intellectual capacity or something like it. The southern bourgeoisie didn’t want the like of Adamu Ciroma, Maitama Sule because they were intellectuals. Before this happened in the 50s, didn’t we have a situation whereby, because of the problem, Zik and Tafawa Balewa were fighting. Zik refused to recognise Shagari, but because of lobbying by the South West, Zik had to withdraw his objection and Shagari became the president. When it suited them, didn’t the South East and the North conspire to bring a state of emergency in the West? Didn’t they conspire to bring out Midwest from the West? So, this question of bargaining for power within different regions of the country has been going on over time. The articulation of it is this zoning.

http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2010/sept/25/national-25-09-2010-001.htm

Balarabe Musa seems to have real beef with the South West. His attitude of trying to pin every singular misfortune on the people of the South West is quite unfortunate but then it is to be expected from an average educated Northerner.

So, a section of the Yoruba elites did not support Awo translates to 'the people of the South West'? These are obvious loopholes in his argument:

1. If the majority of the Yoruba people (as he claims in essence) did not support Awo, how come Awo's party swept the SouthWest plus Bendel?

2. What is the South West media? The biggest paper in the South west then and one of the biggest now is the Tribune, owned by Awo. I'd like to believe that a region or ethnicity can only be regarded as controlling the media when people from that region own the news outlet, not when it is based in that region or its staff is dominated by people from that region.

3. By referring to zoning as an example of collaboration between different sections of the country, he compared it to the excision of the midwest from the west without similar moves in the north and east replete with minorities too. That is a very poor one from a man some people would regard as a statesman.

4. That theory some Northern elements and their southern collaborators that should the pdp abandon zoning, power would not leave the north in the future is a fat lie. If it were true, they especially those outside pdp wouldn't be bothered.

I hate it when people talk like this.Go to Ibadan and hear an average person talk and then u'll realise what rubbish u'r spitting. If there are a people in Nigeria who discuss politics over meals and care so much about who's governing them at a time, they are the people of Ibadan. THe only reason there was so much noise over Adedibu is because the whole Ibadan was aware of everything going on in his camp.

The only reason Akala came in as givernor is the same reason Yar'adua was president. So how did the whole of Nigeria allow that

Good response.

well from the look of things, the agreement is not going to be honoured. What is anybody going to do about it? We have northern govs and eastern govs that are in jonathan's camp. These are pdp members. We shouldn't cry more than the bereaved then.

Crap.

The professor was even counting military regimes. This shows the desperation of some people in IBB's camp. So Ironsi led 4 six months, who voted him in? Who voted Obj in 1976?

I tire 4 this zoning issue o. Is the prof trying to tell us that till 2023, PDP will be in power by all means? What if they present a candidate that a majority of the voters don't want? The prof, i think, is telling us that in his book, there's nothing like free and fair elections. If in 2015, the party presents an igbo candidate, it means whoever it is must win by hook or by crook. It also means that everyone(jonathan, ibb, atiku etc) knows there cannot be credible elections next year.

When the pdp presented obj in 1999, the people they claimed were being compensated thought otherwise and voted falae instead. If there had been co-operation among the ethnicities, who knows, he may have won. What im tryin to say is that if the east feels they have no candidate that can match jonathan, ibb and buhari with the current circumstances, why not rally round a candidate in 2015 regardless of pdp. Falae was impressive given the circumstances in 1999, buhari did very well in the polls in 2003. If jonathan wins, an igbo candidate would have to wrestle it with a northerner in 2015 or 2019. The southeast can rally round this or choose to look the other way.

On the face of it, I reckon Bukola is a slightly better candidate than all the forerunners in this race.

I also reckon he won't win. Even if Goodluck steps down, I doubt he would be considered.
Politics / Re: Saraki Informs Jonathan, Sambo About Presidential Ambition ! by revomind(m): 2:43pm On Sep 14, 2010
@gayigaskia

True that their names may depend on where they live but are you trying to tell us they don't have native names or a native language? In the core North, Fulani people don't bear Hausa names. Hell, even the Hausa people don't. The vast majority of both ethnicities( whether mixed up or singular) bear Arabic names. Arabic names are not Hausa names. I'm eager to believe that you know that.
Politics / Re: Saraki Informs Jonathan, Sambo About Presidential Ambition ! by revomind(m): 2:33pm On Sep 14, 2010
The Sarakis are Yoruba. The reason they claim otherwise is political expediency. Bukola's mother is Yoruba. His wife is from a prominent Lagos family. His children have Yoruba names. His father, Oloye, when contesting for the Presidency put up two posters with different names: one with his Yoruba name the other with his Arabic name. If he was indeed Fulani like he wants people to believe, he wouldn't give a rat's axx about playing the Yoruba card.

Nobody really knows where these guys are from. Even in Ilorin. People have different tales about the man's origin. Usually, the predominant theory is that he is Yoruba.

Think about it, if he was indeed Fulani, there wouldn't be much controversy about his origin.

Someone alluded to a Hausa-Fulani presence in Ilorin. Thats a white lie. Only the Fulani have any sort of presence in the emirate town. Even at that, the Fulani presence itself is exaggerated. The Nupe, Bokubaru and other small ethnicities far exceed the Fulani's population in Kwara state as a whole. The Fulani there are basically members of the emirate and herdsmen. C'est fini. How many can they be? The Emir gives his official speeches/sermons in Yoruba solely to illustrate my point. The Hausa in Kwara on the other hand live there in the same way the Bini man or Efik man lives there.

There's nothing like Yoruba-Fulani. Neither is there anything really like Hausa-Fulani. The latter is a political marriage. You should know that sir.
The Emir of Ilorin having a Yoruba name doesn't make him less of a Fulani man. The fact that his ancestors may have inter-married doesn't too. Maybe you don't know most African societies are patrilineal.

Interesting to see that Alao-Akala is on Jonathan's camp. Put two and two together, you realize he's been guaranteed a second term.

He's my state governor and everyone knows its a misfortune to have that thieving thug in the state house for one more term. There's something in me that wants to see some people shamed and so I'd love to see a Jonathan presidency in 2011. However, this cannot be at the expense of good governance in Oyo State. The people of Oyo state must consider this and look for an alternative even if its the evil genius.

Too bad but thats the way it has to be.

Lets cut to the chase, with due respect to the man Zik, he had no business wanting to lead the Western Region. It is sour grapes for people to say Awo introduced politics of tribalism. If you insist the decamping and the emergence of Awo instead is indeed tribalist, then let us all remain tribalist.
Politics / Re: Ogun State Speaker Impeached by revomind(m): 10:11pm On Sep 06, 2010
From a very objective point of view, it seems to me that a Jonathan presidency from 2011 means the continued mis-governance in the southwest. Frankly, I do not understand Jonathan's desperation at all. If the PDP wants to have it easy in that region, they must dispense with the current set of governors they have. It pains to admit, as a southerner , I'm beginning to see that Jonathan's emergence in next year's poll would spell doom not only for the west but for the nation in general. I don't intend to endorse some candidates that are of shady reputations already but it sure looks as if next year's polls would be the most controversial and crucial elections in our history. It beats me to see just how few people are honest enough to see the resemblance between a Jonathan presidency and the OBJ era.

Frankly, this Ayodele needs to stick to ministering. Notice how he comfortably left out IBB in his predictions.

I'm not interested in this zoning debate. What will be will be after all as far as i'm concerned, everyone involved are all birds of the same feather. No one will offer a fresh start so if the zoning debate will break the country or lead to an uprising of some sort, no shaking. Let everyone be prepared.
Politics / Re: 2011: South Won’t Produce President In 50 Years If Jonathan Runs —Sam Aluko by revomind(m): 12:09pm On Aug 14, 2010
There's a problem when people cannot be civil enough to entertain divergent views. I see no reason why the old man should be branded as 'senile' or accused of aiming at a juicy job with the government. Pray, must everyone support Jonathan? What he said is his own opinion. C'est Fini.

Its a pity none of the above posters had anything to say about the other issues that were raised in that interview. He talked about power generation, the clamour for state police and the presidential system of govt. Apparently, these are non-issues to y'all.

The old man doesn't need to hide. He was economic adviser of some sort to Abacha. Love it or hate it, the economy performed better giving the circumstances under the man. If the states were as viable as they should be, I doubt if this debate of zoning or no zoning would arise.

Politics / Re: Yerima Cannot Continue In Senate, Says Nba by revomind(m): 3:43pm On Jun 13, 2010
People should learn to look at issues objectively. You cannot come across as fair or sincere if, before you take a stand on this Yerima issue, you do not take into cognisance the provisions of the religion he subscribes to and the cultural practices of his people who have sent him to the senate to represent them.
However, the real issue is if he has broken any law. If he has, we must consider if the law conflicts with other laws or codes. As far as we, even if only theoretically, practice a federal system of govt, the matter is never going to be a straight forward one. To that extent, the matter can only be decided by the Supreme Court for final interpretation.
In my opinion, that part of the Child Rights Act that pegs the minimum age of marriage at 18 should have never been part of the law. The bitter truth is that aspect of the law does not conform with the cultural practice of a sizeable part of the country. It was only a matter of time before a loony like Yerima brought it to the fore of national discourse. We can shout ourselves hoarse about VVF, the reality is that up north, there are great-grandmothers in their 50s and 60s. They do not complain and as any student of jurisprudence would tell you, laws have to be seen as in line with moral codes of the people they seek to govern before they are accepted. This controversy should be seen as an opportunity to take another look into our law books and also to rearrange our structure in tune with true federalism.

Asked what really happened to the $12b oil windfall, he said it was $1.2b. He could only correct the figure. What a joke. Man, I think the devil is trying to play a fast one on us by putting us in this situation.

I really don't think he can even get the party's ticket. He's too much of a risk for the party to take. Asides that, for now, he has too many large figures to contend with in the party. The party would have to rig massively to ensure he wins given the level of opposition to his ambition from the civil societies, large section of the media, and most importantly, the people. The only snag is that rigging may not be business as usual next year.

He won't even get the ticket. Everyone should calm down.

Ah Nigeria, We'd be the world's laughing stock if we eventually vote IBB back into power.

Mekuxxx's views so far are quite saddening. I like to believe he's just being mischievous. To insinuate that Igbos cannot be president outside one party's zoning tendencies is not really flattering.

When we remind people that the man annulled an election for no good reason, its not because of any individual. Its because the people had made a choice no matter how bad the choice may look to you in retrospect and that he betrayed the people. Insinuating that only one region and their 'arse-lickers' are concerned, well, is similar to saying only the Niger-Delta should cry foul about the oil windfall he stole. I for one know that Col. Abubakar Dingiwa Umar is no Yoruba 'arse-licker'. He resigned from the military because he felt it was wrong to annul.

I will not vote for any candidate in 2011, 2015 or in the future, whether he is Hausa, Igbo or Yoruba, simply because according to one party, its his/her people's turn. A simple question; What would you do if a southerner clinches the ticket? I ask because, my friend, it is becoming likely.
