hiawathia1981:I've been visiting the country for several years, did a ton of research and deduced the culture is very Aspergery. I have Asperger's, so I'm a natural fit. But foreigners coming from big cities and vibrant cultures get bored and depressed. |
Dremca:I didn't, still learning. I learned more German with language apps than Finnish. |
obiwigan21:She sounds like a gold digger olosho ooo. You should have kicked her out of the hotel room, blocked her on Facebook and whatsapp. You were being too nice to such a horrendous olosho. |
If I was running a modeling agency, I'd come here for scouting models But remember: External beauty is temporary and fades away with age. Knowledge is power. It is far more valuable than beauty, with knowledge and sought after skills you can make your own money and never depend on a man. Men who take you for your beauty cheat on you and kick you to the curb once you are old and no longer beautiful. Find a soulmate who values good character, personality and common interests over skin deep beauty. |
I really don't understand the colorism nonsense here. You guys belittle the dark skinned women, no matter how beautiful they are, then you complain about the bleachers. This ugly colorism bigotry is probably the reason for bleaching trend. |
Stallion93:You sound like the Finns. The entire nation is super introvert and able to mingle only after drinking copious amounts of booze. I think this extreme introvert culture is the reason the population is a mere 5.5 million in such a huge land. You are a doctor, why is your self esteem zero? Doctors usually have big egos! ![]() |
hiawathia1981:Healthcare system is way better in Finland. In the States there is no public healthcare, everyone depends om employer-provided health insurance and a lot of it is really bad with high monthly fees and out of pocket payments when you go to the hospital. If you are between jobs, and get sick, you are totally screwed. Healthcare and medicine costs are astronomical. That is one big reason I left, I have multiple chronic illnesses and couldn't live with the stress (I lost jobs and been unemployed for a few months after the companies went down and laid off many employees, also the 2008 recession.) Finns have great public healthcare, it's good for people with chronic illness. You never have to worry about dying from treateble things like asthma if you lose your job. Non-emergency care is slow with long waiting times, it can take months to get an appointment for conditions that aren't life threatening, but if you have the money you can buy private health insurance and get fast service. Culture is another big difference. Americans do the fake smiles and small talk, strangers smile at you and say how are you doing everywhere, they expect you to do the same and talk about stupid little things. If you don't keep it up at workplace everyday they brand you ass weird and marginalize you. Finns have introverted and quiet culture, you don't have to talk to anyone if you don't want to, no need to wear masks and fake smiles if you have a bad day. Finns aren't materialistic, unlike most Americans, it's a shameful act to show off material wealth and expensive things. They don't have wasteful shopping culture. Even for outdoors and camping, Americans will buy a load of unnecessary items like gas cookers, expensive tents, comfort gear. Finns buy the simplest, cheapest stuff and make their own fire to cook. I went camping with Finns, they just gather branches and make cooking fire with it. They shapen thin branches with camping knife and use it to cook sausages over fire. Americans will bring a gas cooker, power inverter using car battery to plug the cell phone chargers, and use a set of steel bbq skewers to cook stuff. They will bring car fridges. What's the point of going camping if you bring all the comforts with you? That's just a small example to demonstrate the difference of mentality. I like the minimalistic, non-materialist culture and harmony with nature so I'm quite happy in Finland. The downside is the limited business opportunity for entrepreneurs. America is paradise for those who start their own business, the system favors businesses and entrepreneurs get huge tax write-offs. It's living hell for wage slaves with bad health. Salaried workers get taxed to death. Finns tax salaried workers to death as well, but at least our taxes are used for things like free education and affordable public healthcare, not for bombing innocent civilians in other countries. There is institutionalized racism and police brutality targeting blacks in America. Police shooting unarmed innocent blacks is a major problem. There is some racism in Finland but hell of a lot less. I noticed the racism here targets Muslim Somalis who wear Islamic dress, not so much West Africans. Especially after a large number of Somali immigrants went to Syria to join the IS and it was in the headline news. There was an old friend of mine who was married to a Kenyan lady. One of their neighbors was a nasty racist woman and yelled horrible insults at her all the time. I saw it myself. But most everyone treated her well, it was only that one nasty woman who was being rude and racist. They lived in a small city with no African population. Then again I've seen middle aged racist men yell nasty things at white immigrants, too. Usually it's drunks who do that. There are xenophobes who hate Russians and non-western immigrants. But there's no obsession with race like America, and no police shootings. |
kaffy4tope:I'm not a lesbian, I wouldn't know. How can you generalize all women of a country of 200 million and a score of different ethnicities? That's wrong sha. |
Favor99:It might benefit politicians, but not the people. Developed Africa would be benefiting the whole world. And yes your leaders do all those crazy things you just mentioned, like creating wars creating aids/Ebola etc9Aids has been recorded since the 19th century and there is an actual blood sample of an aids patient from 1950's. Ebola is a hemorrhaging fever, those fevers have been around since the dawn of time, Ebola spread in Africa cause of the people eating bushmeat. Saying ebola and aids are created by foreign powers is no different than the flat earth conspiracy theories, ridiculous and stupid. Besides aids killed scores of white people too. You sound like the American conspiracy freaks who claim the government is poisoning the kids with vaccines and the ruling elite created vaccine-induced autism and cancers to cull the population. |
tealaw:And I wouldn't touch any of them with a 10 yard pole and wearing gloves. Eww! |
Favor99:It's stupid and makes no sense to create wars and division in Africa from a business perspective. Developed and prosperous Africa means new markets and hundreds of millions of customers to sell products. War-torn, backward, undeveloped countries benefit no one. |
Favor99:You guys have been hating on each other here, it's not the white people who created your ethnic bigotries. It's extremely low IQ conspiracy theory cop-out to slander me like that (I tell people not to make ethnic bigtry hate speech all the time) or blame the prejudices and hate on outsiders. Are the IPOB separatists white? Is it white people not allowing the Igbos to get elected as president or depriving them of major infrastructure? Is it white people who unleash the Fulani herdsmen to kill Christian farmers? You already have enough animosity and hate, muslim-christian hate included. You don't need anyone putting it there, you have to blame the tribalist bigots here who are screaming ethnic slurs all the time. They were always here. |
Yorubas have some highly educated and successful people, nothing against Yorubas in general but they really need to fix that skull mining problem before comparing themselves with Igbos. Igbos don't do skull mining and human sacrifice for money rituals, that is a huge plus on their side. |
PAGAN9JA:Rwandans are preserving theirs and make tons of cash selling gorilla watching safaris to tourists. Last year's tourism income was 400 million dollars. |
Throwback:The life of celebrities is a lonely life. 99% of their friends are fake and around them for their fame and money. The man was living in hotel rooms for the good part of the year to make the tv series. Imagine staying alone in hotel rooms half of the year? That is a crap life. If you ever watched his show, you would have noticed melancholy was always there and he was not a happy man. Also he has battled with drug addiction for a long time, hard drugs can cause irreversible damage to brain chemistry, destroy the serotonin production and cause severe depression later in life. Another thing is 3rd world people are too busy struggling and hustling to think too deep and get into an existential crisis. If you are poor and hustling, you always have hope for a better life, no time to question your place in the world. When you achieve everyhthing, life can feel quite empty and lonely. Here is another example, a world famous chef with 3 Michelin stars who committed suicide at the top of his career: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/switzerland/12133117/Benoit-Violier-worlds-best-chef-dies-at-age-44.html |
carbonado:I learned all of it here on Nairaland! |
Mobilia:Nice to meet you too! Are you from the States as well? |
hiawathia1981:Jollof rice is so great! I gotta learn some okra recipes and the Nigerian pepper soup next. |
Martin0:Shhh you gotta clean up the country first uf you want foreigners to relocate oo! Send Buhari home, elect a decent leader who will give you stable electricity and water, also clean up the skull mining, cultists, armed robbers and Fulani herdsmen wahala. |
kaffy4tope:Cool! I have a Turkish friend who is doing humanitarian work in some village, she stayed in Kigali for a few days and wrote it's beautiful and serene. There are quite a number of American and European expats, she said there were Jamaican artists exhibiting their work at art galleries. People come from far away corners of the world to live and work there. Sounds like a great place to visit! |
hiawathia1981:I stumbled upon here when searching something on Google, ended up staying cause Nigerians are awesome. There's amazing food & recipes in the cooking section, great stories in the literature section (I highly recommend Number 225 Katakata Street), women have so much freedom to talk about anything without getting harassed, I made some amazing friends. |
hiawathia1981:The cold I can handle by dressing in layers like an onion. Texas heat kept me locked up indoors during the day, there is nothing you can do to ease the heat. Even in the shade it was awful cause of high humidity. At least Finland has summer and fall with really nice weather (not too hot or cold.) |
I'm visiting Rome for a few days, including a whole day Vatican trip. I am taking tons of photos and going to post them here when I'm back. There were some wealthy Nigerian tourists in Vatican, I told them to visit Nairaland ![]() The hustlers selling stuff on the street seem to be mostly from South Sudan. This is a bad season to visit, it's far too hot and insanely crowded. Best time to see Rome is December, there will be no heat and all the popular places will be devoid of crowds. Anyway I will post one photo I took with my phone to give you an idea what is to come. This is an ancient Roman bridge on river Tiber. They added angel statues in the Renaissance era.

hiawathia1981:About 5 years. Now I'm watching the Trump regime with great sadness. I lived in the Bay Area and Austin, TX then San Antonio, TX, the heat was brutal in Texas. |
hiawathia1981:Nice to meet you too! Finland has been treating me eay better than America, but the winters are brutal. Where are you located? |
Cheap condom gets you a pikin, aids or both. |
Is Buhari going to appear in BBNaija? |
hiawathia1981:Finland! But I moved here from the States a few years ago. |
Money is great in Turkey, people aren't racist and the entire nation hero-worships African soccer players. They will get hell of a lot more attention and admiration than anywhere in Europe, Nigerian soccer stars are treated like demigods. |
Nigerian prostitutes were stabbing each other and cutting each other's faces in Finland a while back. The established prostitutes didn't want to share their territory with the newcomers. |
Vanilla cupcakes with buttercram icing decorations. I colored the buttercream with blueberry and lingonberry powder dissolved in hot water, no artificial food colors. I don't like chemicals so I use only natural ingredients for coloring cake icing.
