Raising import duty now means increasing the cost of living.
When I did Economics as a subject in secondary school, I was taught import duty is used to control inflow of foreign goods. That is, low import duty attracts more foreign goods while high import duty discourages patronage of foreign goods.
But today in Nigeria, high import duty does not decrease the demand for foreign goods because consumers in Nigeria refuse to give up on foreign goods. But I don't blame the consumers. The government does not control the standard of local goods. Using local goods is suicidal in Nigeria. Almost everything is faked at traders' backyards.
Some people may praise BAT for this new import duty. The praisers will claim the new import duty will boost Nigerian economy by promoting local goods. But it is not true. Buhari closed borders with the same logic but life has been getting worse after the border closure.

While it’s important for government to play their role of the safety of local products, why are we always blaming the government for everything, even something that we can call our ourselves to take responsibilities for?

People producing these fake products are Nigerians like you and I.

If government is trying its best to get everything working but some of us are sabotaging the efforts, why do we continue to blame government but not the saboteurs?

The US always bombing other countries territories.

It is rather too dumb for anyone to think the US are of peace.

Even if there’s peace in the world, they would always find a way to stoke violence so they can be everywhere pretending to be peace keepers.

They have close to a trillion dollar military budget for 2023.

Nobody have such a huge budget and follow anything peaceful.

Every passing day, it's becoming obvious that the insecurity issue that is bedevilling Abuja is politically motivated. Tinubu appointed Ribadu (an ex-police officer) as a National Security Adviser. This has never happened before, that position is always occupied by military men. Secondly, he appointed a Southerner (Wike of all people) as a minister of FCT. Anyone with functioning brain cells would see that the President is daring the North and they will show him. My only concern is the citizens that will be caught in the cross fire because where two Elephants fight, it's the grass that suffers.

Spoke with one of our clients this week and when I billed him for his company, he kept lamenting that the bill is too much considering that he's a chatered accountant himself and a banker before leaving for the UK. He said he's doing the care work to keep body together.

I know quite well that white collar job isn't easily available and bills will be piling they have no option than to take whatever comes.

What is not certain, is the extent to which Dangote’s refinery will reduce petrol prices in Nigeria.

What is certain however, is that the laws of economics dictate that a reduced cost of production is likely to reflect in reduced prices.

Our present pump prices are not dictated solely by the international price of crude, but by the landing cost of imported PMS. The components of this landing cost includes product cost, traders and insurance margin, shipping, charges by government agencies, financing & banking charges and storage charges.

You will agree that the elimination of shipping and govt port charges, and a possible reduced product cost in exchange for discounted supply terms or tax incentives, will definitely result in a lower total cost of production and consequently, lower prices at the pump. Some might say Dangote needs to repay loans, pay good wages, pay taxes, maintenance etc. but news flash! The foreign refineries we are currenty importing from also have these overhead costs embedded in their product prices.

Furthermore, with the eventual completion of Abdulsamad Rabiu's 250k bpd BUA refinery in Akwa Ibom, and the Waltersmith 10k bpd modular refinery in Imo among others; we are looking at a combined total capacity of nearly 1m bpd supply of refined petroleum (compared to our current 427.7k bpd/68 million litres daily imported petrol consumption), and the resultant boost in supply is expected to further drive down prices over time.

Other benefits of the refinery include:
Over 100,000 jobs created
Saving Forex spent daily on importation (reducing demand pressure on USD)
Adequate local supply of PMS, AGO, DPK & Jet A1 fuels
Increase in FG Revenue from earnings from dividends (20% investment in refinery), taxes and other levies.
Creation of allied industries and appreciation in real estate value around the refinery.
Nigeria sheds the embarrassing label and disgraceful paradox of being a major crude oil producer that still imports its fuel. My humble two cents.
