Dude, this is not a laughing matter. I will try as much as possible to control myself and respond. I spent 26k yesterday and drugs were prescribed which will cost 28k. I will get the drugs today.

But allycat seem to be one who said something my case might be. My left nostril is often blocked that my right. Right now, it is the left nostril that is block.

Go to a private clinic and do yours. Waiting for me to answer you for every step is not wise cos your case is different from mine.

Sorry about what is happening to you.You seem to have 2 problems the hearing loss from quinine called Ototoxicity, the left ear being worse and the right ear seems to have a problem called Otitis Media with effusion which gets worse when you have a blocked nose and therefore a blocked Eustachian tube. Unfortunately the ototoxicity cannot be reveresed, the management for that is hearing aids. The other ear if confirmed to have OME can be treated with a combination of drugs and in some rare instances surgery. But you are not a good candidate for surgery because that is your better ear. Also hearing aids do NOT treat, cure or improve hearing loss. They just amplify sound making noise louder so the residual hearing can pick it up. Hearing aids vary in sophistication from simple analogue hearing aids which just make all noises louder to very sophisticated digital hearing aids which can be regulated to tune out some noises which would disturb the understanding of speech and concentrate on noises within the speech range. Technology keeps improving every day and now we have implantables like the bone bridge which are used for some forms of hearing aid but generally not in cases of Ototoxicity.

I am kinda broken right now. I was at the private clinic and the doctor referred me to a place to do test. We did the test and the man who carried out the test was saying hearing aid will be used and it cost 700k.

We have now return to the first clinic and the man isn't around at the time of typing this. He has gone back to teaching hospital and we are told to wait till 4-6PM.

I am very sure better ear can be solved. Please allycat, if you know a possible solution, help me. I can still hear sound with it except it comes out as muffled sounds.

I am broken really.

Update: The Right nostril is now partially blocked while the left that was blocked before is now free.

Side note: As at 13-15th of November, I couldn't hear well. Around this time, no phlegm was coming out of my nose into my mouth. However, by 16th of November I start noticing slight improvement in hearing, by 17th I noticed that phlegm was coming out and I was spitting them out as they came out, the hearing was improving and by 21 I could hear better than previous days. However, by 23rd to now, there has been a decline.

This has been the case with me. When there is a shut down, the phlegm doesn't come out. When it begins to improve the phlegm comes out often.

See what I found after you mentioned the possible cause:

This usually indicates the Eustachian tube isn't working well. The emboldened is what I have been experiencing. It will look like I am beginning to hear for 2-3 days and shut down again for much longer days, going to 1 week. After a while, I will start hearing louder and then it goes of. Like I said in my first quote to you, as at Monday, I could hear louder than I can hear now. Right now, I can't hear much if we compare last week Monday to 28 of November(Today).

Thanks a lot. The better ear hasn't gotten better since this problem started. I have not fallen ill prior to this neither have I taken any medicine.

This I can say I have done is using cotton bud to clean my ear too much, but not to the extent of reaching my eardrum though. Then I start having the strange feeling of not hearing as loud as it used to be. By ending of October, it was worse and sound came out like faulty radio speaker. It later started acting like it was getting better for few days only to come back again and yes, my nostrils often feel blocked, partially and it often move from one nostril to the other. Right now as I am typing this, the left nostril can't breathe freely. Maybe later in the day, it will be right one just as experienced when you have catarrh.

As at Monday last week, I could hear a little better but by Wednesday or so, the sound Volume has reduced again.

Please help with more information as much as you can.

Recommendation letter is necessary since I was coming from Another clinic. I didn't pay because it's government hospital but not sufficient to handle ENT cases--Hence the referral.

I have not paid for the test but given a date to come for it. However, I will be going for private ENT clinic today. Cos waiting doesn't seem to be helping me in this case as my hearing isn't getting back to normal as it was early October--It's been going and coming back since then.

Where are you based? If you are in Lagos, you should visit a Clinic to at least do a test.

What's your case like? I can still hear but not so loud as I used to and I am guessing I will have to use hearing aid to help me for the rest of my life.

Yes, I went and they asked me to book a test date. Which comes on 8th of December. I will keep updating this thread to make it useful to others as time goes on.

Thanks. I was beginning to wonder if anybody experienced in this is on nairaland. My problem now is that my has been going on and off. Since October. It will come on, I won't hear well with the left ear, last for some days and the go off, come back after a while but I have noticed I have not e been able to hear as loud as I could few weeks into October because severe decline started in October ending which has been going on and off.

I am seriously worried right now. The problem on about 2 weeks and half back and I started hearing again just last week here but not as loud as before. Please I need help, How much does the portharcourt clinic charge. I am still waiting to get the test done at LUTH, which is on the 8TH.

Sometimes even my phone will be useless to me that I can't even make any meaning from calls and some other times, I will be able to hear the sounds. It often sound like radio speaker that is faulty.

One of the method proposed by someone here is silent treatment and it often get to most women. This kind woman I no go even eat her food again for months. If it get worse, I will leave the house for her and only come to check on the kids from time to time.

I just learnt from your new update..... having similar hearing issue..........the questions the doctor asked you like the catarrh symptoms etc i seem to experience it as well..... besides occasionally i hear ringing tunes or echoes for a brief period of time..........used hearing aids some years back. Funny enough my hearing seems to have improved better than in the past, even my friends and family members observed and comments on it as well from time to time, i also do alot of DO-IT-YOURSELF hearing/ear therapies by researching massively on the internet about various ear problems, symtoms and DIY solutions, i must admit it has really helped my hearing. from experience most Nigerian ENT Doctors are after the money and not how they can help u resolve and treat your hearing loss passionately. it was when my parents travelled to India that they discovered that my ENT doc was ripping us off by giving me hearing aids that re not tailored or not designed for my specific hearing loss/problem and also selling at an overpriced rate (my folks bought two different sets of hearing aids back then from our Nigerian ENT doc). i was using analogue instead of a customized digital, the indian ENT doctor was mad and angry at such wickedness and gave me a set of digital aids at a cheaper price at 250K. hence we cut ties with doc. It was an eye opener for me. hence i made up my mind that if i am to go for any ENT services and hearing aids. its india, canada, us, uk. but india is the best and is cheaper compared to the other countries.

I had the deafness again from last week till Friday but everything is fine again. I am going to LUTH on 8 and lay complaints. As the time of typing this, my right nostril does not breathe freely, more like it has partial blockage caused by Catarrh but I do not have Catarrh, except for some phlegm being excreted from nasal areas to my mouth.

If truly you are not like those men then you are a rare breed. I don't know if it's just me being old fashioned but I can't sit down and watch my husband playing my roles at home.
I cannot sit down comfortably while he is cooking or washing our clothes, even when I was feeling sick the other day and he offered to cook I still took a stool to sit with him in the kitchen so as to be part of it.

I don't understand this modern way of life where roles have been comfortably exchanged.

Let me be honest it's actually my money and I am speaking from personal experience.

Our marriage is relatively new and before we got married he told me and my parents he makes up to 120000 or more every month so he has no problem taking care of me. That was actually a criteria our parents gave him, that if he can't cater for me he should postpone the wedding till he is comfortable.
