Politics / Re: Justice Okoro To Head Supreme Court Panel On Presidential Election Petition by seaenergy: 9:10pm On Oct 15, 2023
Ofunaofu:

Justice John Inyang Okoro has been nominated to coordinate the Supreme Court panel that will oversee the presidential election petition filed by the candidates of Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Gregory Obi, and the People Democratic Party PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, respectively.

News Band gathered that Justice Okoro is currently coordinating other Justices of the Supreme Court out of the total of eleven Justices currently serving in the apex court.

An insider, however, revealed to this medium that there is heavy arm-twisting among the Justices as the majority are insisting on following the electoral act and the federal constitution governing elections in the country devoid of technicalities.

In the meantime, it was learnt that the Chief Judge of the Federation, Chief Justice Olukayode Ariwoola and Justice Kekere-Ekun have both recused themselves to avoid conflict of interest.

Justice Ariwoola, this medium was informed, recused himself over his longstanding relationship with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who is one of the Respondents in the petitions.

On her part, Justice Kekere-Ekun recused herself over her relationship with Alhaji Abubakar through her husband who is a serving board member of American University of Nigeria, Yola, owned by the PDP flag bearer.

Justice Okoro, it was gathered, is faced with an uphill task of securing a unanimous judgement from the seven justices required by Law to be on the panel.

Another source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, meanwhile revealed that the “arm-twisting” involves the Department of State Security (DSS) and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Yusuf Fagbemi.

Fagbemi, the source said, is the middle man between the camp of the presidency and the Supreme Court led by Justice Inyang Okoro.

It is left to be seen whether the Justices of the Supreme Court will uphold the electoral act and the constitution or whether they will rely on technicalities like the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC).

According to information gleaned from the apex court website, currently, there are eleven Justices.

With the recusal of both Chief Justices Ariwoola and Kekere-Ekun due to conflicts of interest, only nine remain from which seven will be selected.

According to the source, the three Justices are under heavy pressure to either unflinchingly adhere to the constitution without compromise, which will be a blow to the camp of Tinubu, or play along as the judges of PEPC were accused of.

Sundaland:
Hezbollah deputy chief Naim Qassem said on Friday that the group would not be swayed by calls for it to stay on the sidelines of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, saying the party was “fully ready” to contribute to the fighting.

“The behind-the-scenes calls with us by great powers, Arab countries, envoys of the United Nations, directly and indirectly telling us not to interfere will have no effect,” he told supporters gathered in the southern Beirut suburb for a rally.

“Hezbollah knows its duties perfectly well. We are prepared and ready, fully ready,” Qassem said.

Food / Re: Erisco Foods Arrests Chioma Egodi For Saying There Is Too Much Sugar In Tomato by seaenergy: 9:18pm On Sep 25, 2023
Wisdomkosi:
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has said that it will issue a summon to Erisco Foods Limited over the arrest and detention of Chioma Egodi Jnr.

The Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of FCCPC, Barrister Babatunde Irukera, made this known on X (formerly Twitter) following the arrest of Egodi, who made a review of Erisco’s product.

“UPDATE: @fccpcnigeria operatives have confirmed arrest & transfer of the case to Abuja by the Police Force. She was no longer at the station on arrival,” Irukera posted.

“Working to determine exact current location & engaging Force HQ in Abuja. Summons being issued to @EriscoFoodsLtd immediately.”

The lady in question, Egodi Jnr, made a post on Facebook on September 17, 2023, where she said she tasted too much sugar in the tin tomato she bought, a product of Erisco Foods.

“I went to buy tin tomatoes yesterday (September 16) that I will use to make stew; I didn’t see Gino and Sonia, so I decided to buy this one,” she wrote.

“When I opened it, I decided to taste it omo! Sugar is just too much! Haaa biko let me know if you have used this Tin tomato before because this is an ike gwuru situation!”

The management of Erisco Foods Limited thereafter issued an official statement about the post Egodi made on Facebook about their product and also said they would take all necessary actions against any malicious attack on their reputation.

“The attention of Erisco Foods Limited has been drawn to a Facebook post by one Chioma Egodi Jnr on September 17, 2023, alleging that Nagtko Tomato Mix, one of the three tomato paste variants of Erisco Foods Limited, contains an unhealthy amount of sugar and therefore not fit for human consumption,” Erisco wrote.

“While this claim is untrue and unfounded in its entirety, we wish to put on record that Erisco Foods Limited, from inception Is built on the vision and mission to manufacture and promote healthy, wholly Made-in-Nigeria tomato products with the commitment to feeding not only Nigerians but also Africans with healthy foods.

“Our Initial reaction was to ignore and disregard the post which was obviously intended to mistead our esteemed customers and discredit the image of Ensco Foods Limited, as previously instigated by some elements and syndicates who are uncomfortable with our increasing market dominance as a leading indigenous manufacturer of 100% natural tomato pastes. Considering, however, that Erisco Foods Limited has built a reputation as a credible organization committed to due process and the good of humanity, we have decided to bring the said publication to the attention of relevant authorities.

“In light of the above, we wish to reiterate that Erisco Foods Limited is solely committed to the production of healthy tomato products, including other products that have the full regulatory stamp and approval of NAFDAC and Standard Organization of Nigeria.

“While we recognize the rights of our consumers to make genuine observations about our products, we want to thank our esteemed customers for their continued patronage of Erisco Foods Limited. However, having built our reputation on healthy and quality products which have earned us both local and international awards, including the National Productivity Order of Merit Award, we will take all necessary actions against any malicious attack on our reputation.”

Egodi was arrested and whisked away to Abuja by the Police Force, as confirmed by the FCCPC boss, Irukera on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday.

“This has come to our attention @fccpcnigeria & we are engaged. Saw statement & deepening learning of the circumstances right now,” he posted.

“We have a team seeking to clarify arrest/detention status of the subject; & activating regulatory process to secure explanation from @EriscoFoodsLtd.”

Itopalucky:

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Comrade Timi Frank, on Sunday, called on the Department of State Services (DSS) to urgently arrest and prosecute heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs of the Federal Government under ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, known to have abused their offices through corrupt tendencies.
Frank in a statement in Abuja in reaction to the suspension and arrest of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, by the DSS, said other heads of critical government agencies known to have serially abused their offices and allegedly stole the common wealth of the people must be brought to book.
He listed the CEO’s to include the Directors General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Bashir Jamo, Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), Mohammed Bello Koko, Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari and the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Muhammad Nami.
Others are the former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, immediate past Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika and ex-Minister of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouq.
Frank, who is the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP), Ambassador to East Africa and the Middle East, insisted that failure to arrest and prosecute these suspects known to have used their offices for selfish gain would show that the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is only out to witch-hunt Emefiele now under DSS custody.
He added that without moving against the powerful cabal, the Tinubu’s administration would have lent credence to insinuations that it is only up against Christian political office holders as recently alluded to by the immediate past Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-rufai.
Frank also called on the Tinubu’s administration to include beneficiaries of corruption proceeds from the affected MDAs in its list of suspects to be arrested and prosecuted.
According to him, “Those who illegally benefited from illegal allocation of oil blocks and marginal oil fields championed by the NNPCL and the CBN’s Money Redesign Policy must be fished out and prosecuted.
“The execution of the National Social Investment Programme by Hajiya Farouk leaves a lot of questions to be answered. This is the time for Nigerians to know what really happened and how much was used to feed school pupils at home during COVID.
“The recent deception by Sirika who chattered an Ethiopian Airline Aircraft to deceive Nigerians that Nigeria Air has materialized must also be probed. Personal Assistant to ex-President Buhari, Tunde Sabiu must not be left out.”

ogododo:
Former Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, has accused the lawmaker who branded launch of Nigeria Air as fraud of demanding five percent shares of the National Carrier Air from him.

During a hearing by the House of Representatives, Chairman of the House Committee on Aviation, Nnolim Nnaji, had declared the launch of Nigeria Air a fraud.

to him at that time, Honourable, a bidding process that has taken place, and some people won. So, I think you should go to those people and ask for the 5 percent.”

When Reuben Abati, anchor of the show, asked the former Minister to clarify if the lawmaker indeed asked for bribe for himself and other legislators, Sirika said, “Let’s be fair, Hon Nnaji didn’t say other members. He said he wants it for himself and his people. His people could his be his family, could be members and it could be leadership. I don’t know, but he insisted on 5%. I said that he should relax and approach the owners. That’s exactly what I told him.”

The former Minister also criticised Nnaji and the aviation committee for conducting what translated to a “predetermined hearing”.

‘I was a member of the House of Reps 20 years ago, and 10 years ago, I was a Senator. I know the workings of the National Assembly. He [Nnaji] called for public hearing. And right under the public hearing, he just turned the paper and read the riot act. The practice in the National Assembly is that after hearing people and the complain, you now go and sit down as a committee, discuss the issues, raise them, approach the whole house of reps and take position of the house plus leadership and come back and make your findings known, but not immediately you just read the riot Act out. It means is predetermined.”

adenigga:

Barely three days after returning from a medical trip to London, the United Kingdom, the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), will, on Friday, inaugurate the Presidential/VIP Wing of the State House Medical Centre, Abuja.

“Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, President Buhari, accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the State House, Tijjani Umar, will embark on a guided tour of the hospital,” a statement signed by the State House Director of Information, Abiodun Oladunjoye, read on Wednesday.

According to the statement, titled ‘President Buhari to inaugurate Presidential/VIP Wing Of State House Medical Centre on Friday,’ guests invited to the inauguration ceremony are expected to be seated by 9am.

The PUNCH reported that the legacy project, situated on the premises of the Presidential Villa, had its ground-breaking ceremony conducted by the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, on November 1, 2021.

The hospital, built on 2,485 square metres, is a specialised Intensive Care Centre to cater for the President, Vice President, their immediate families and other VIPs.

“The presidential/VIP Wing houses several specialised departments, to be staffed by a team of medical professionals, featuring five consultation rooms dedicated to various specialties, including respiratory, cardiology, ophthalmology, ENT, and general consultation.

“Additionally, the hospital has a specialised X-ray suite equipped with a digital X-ray machine as well as a diagnostic suite encompassing MRI, CT scan, and endoscopy facilities.

“Patients and visitors can enjoy access to a Healing Garden, designed to foster healing, relaxation, and enhancement of overall well-being,” the State House said.

Built for N21bn, the VIP Wing also showcases a Catheterisation Laboratory, two operating rooms for regular procedures, and special procedures such as organ transplants.

Reacting to the development, the State House Permanent Secretary, Umar, said, “We are excited that Mr President has kindly consented to inaugurate this legacy and transformative project on the cusp of the completion of his two-term tenure as President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

He added that “Since the inception of this project in 2021, the State House Management has successfully completed several projects, including a Special Care Centre, Biosafety Level 2 Molecular Laboratory, certified by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, a medium capacity incinerator and the Dental Wing Extension Building at the State House Medical Centre, Asokoro, a block of two-bedroom flats at the Staff Quarters of the Medical Centre, as well as a 54-seater State House Multi-Purpose Training Centre at the Auditorium.

‘‘The Conference Car Unit workshop and the Modern Fleet Management hub will be inaugurated next week.”

On May 13, Saturday PUNCH reported that the dispensary located at the administrative section of the State House had been relocated to the VIP wing of the State House Medical Centre.

Our correspondent observed the evacuation of hospital beds, surgical suction machine, oxygen cylinders, mini theatre light stands, pedal bins, dressing bowls, file cabinets and blood collection tubes, among others.

A medical member of staff, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told our correspondent that the old equipment would be relocated to the old State House Medical Centre in Asokoro as they would not be needed at the VIP section.

The officer said, “We are moving them to the old State House Medical Centre outside.”

According to the State House Management, the Presidential/VIP Wing will coexist with the State House Medical Centre, located in Asokoro, Abuja.

“The medical facility remains committed to providing accessible, well-equipped, and rejuvenated health care services, catering to the diverse needs of patients through a range of comprehensive medical treatments,” the statement added.

Crime / Re: We Found ‘suspicious Things’ During Search Of Seun Kuti’s Home – Police by seaenergy: 6:55am On May 18, 2023
dabonny:
The police said they discovered suspicious items during a search of the home of Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti in Lagos State.

Lagos police spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin disclosed this in a tweet while responding to criticism on how police are handling the musician’s ongoing case of assault against a policeman.

Nairaland founder Seun Osewa accused the police of harrassing “Seun Kuti’s family by ransacking their home and seizing his wife’s phone is wrong.

“You are making people who were sympathetic to the police because Seun Kuti’s behaviour was despicable to remember why they hated the police before. This is bad Public Relations (PR) for the police.”

In response, Hundeyin said, “In the course of our investigation, we stumbled on certain suspicious things that needed to be proven/disproved beyond reasonable doubt.

“We, therefore, applied for and duly got a search warrant from the court which we have executed. Investigation continues.

“No law restricts the police to investigating only the initial crime. World over, Police Departments stumble on other crimes while investigating an initial crime,” Hundeyin responded.

“We are duty bound to investigate them in line with our mandate of detecting and investigating crimes.”

Seun, son of Afrobeat legend, Fela Kuti was seen in a viral video slapping a policeman in Lagos State.

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Alkali Baba Usman, according to a statement from police spokesman, CSP Muyiwa Adejobi thereafter ordered the arrest of the musician.

Kuti on Monday turned himself in at the Lagos State Police command Headquarters, Ikeja accompanied by his lawyer and family representatives.

The 40-year-old musician was subsequently arrested and moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Panti.

On Tuesday, he was arraigned before Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun of a Magistrate’s Court in the Yaba area of Lagos State.

The Afrobeat singer was, however, granted bail but according to his lawyer, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN), he is expected to meet his bail conditions within 48 hours.

I was expecting to read about what happened before he starts slapping the security man. Abi he just see police and start slapping.

Nairaland / General / Re: No Nigerian Must Be Killed In Sudan War - Arewa Group by seaenergy: 1:55pm On Apr 22, 2023
Jatuski:

*Blames Embassy for not evacuating citizens

It is abundantly clear that lives are now at stake, "especially for our Northern brothers and sisters schooling in Sudan, considering the escalation of this war, that involves the use of heavy-duty incendiary."

This was expressed by the National President of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF), Alh. Yerima Shettima in a statement he personally signed and made available to newsmen in Kaduna on Saturday April 22,

"As a group, we wish to make it categorically clear that if our innocent Northern brothers and sisters schooling in Sudan get killed in this war, we shall hold the Nigerian Embassy in Sudan accountable.

"We wish to emphasize that on no account should these young and innocent Nigerians be left to their own devices, because they have a fatherland that has the constitutional and legal responsibility to protect the lives of citizens anywhere they are on this planet," the statement said.

AYCF in the statement titled, "On The Unacceptable Response Of Nigerian Government To Citizens Trapped In Sudan" said that as concerned Nigerians who are very uncomfortable with the fate of Nigerians trapped in Sudan due to ongoing war and killings, they feel duty bound to unequivocally state their final stand on this bloodshed and arson.

"We therefore wish to state, for the records, as follows:

It is totally unacceptable that while several countries were evacuating their citizens from Sudan, ours is the only African nation giving excuses.

"With thousands of Nigerians in Sudan, especially male and female Northern students being the majority, we reject the lame excuse given in a letter by the Nigeria Embassy about the difficulty of evacuating our sons and daughters. No Northerner in this country is at peace since the killings and arson started in Sudan.

"We are aware that the Sudanese government had already warned that the situation would escalate, and gave 72 hours ultimatum for countries whose citizens are either doing business or schooling in that country to be evacuated. We cannot fathom why all we get at the moment is the excuse by our Embassy that doing so would be difficult. What held us from taking advantage of the 72 hours ultimatum in the first place?"

Education / Re: Sudan Conflict: 1,262 Nigerian Students Demand Evacuation, 330 Residents Killed by seaenergy: 7:32am On Apr 21, 2023
divinehand2003:
•Nigerian students fill forms for airlifting, Uganda, Tanzania rescue nationals

•3,200 injured as outage, food, water scarcity hit Khartoum, says WHO

Nigerian students numbering over 1,262 have appealed to the Federal Government to evacuate them from the Republic of Sudan where a fierce military confrontation between the Sudanese armed forces and the paramilitary group, Rapid Support Force, has claimed 330 lives with 3,200 injured.

The Secretary-General of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Sudan, Adam Mohammed, who said this in an interview with The PUNCH on Thursday, lamented that many students had run out of food.

The clashes had also displaced thousands of civilians who fled the capital, Khartoum, even as some foreign nations, including Japan, Uganda and Tanzania had begun evacuating their nationals as the violence which started on April 8 entered its 12th day on Thursday.

Until recently, the Sudanese Armed Forces, led by General Abdel al-Burhan, and the RSF paramilitary group, headed by General Mohamed Dagalo were allies.

They worked together in 2019 in a popular uprising that overthrew Sudan’s brutal dictator, Omar al-Bashir, who ruled the country for three decades.

After the coup, a power-sharing government was formed, made up of civilian and military groups.

The plan was for the interim government to rule Sudan for a few years and oversee a transition to a civilian administration but in 2021, al-Burhan, who had become chief of the power-sharing council, dissolved it, declaring he would instead hold elections in 2023.

The current fighting broke out between the army and the RSF as a result of failed negotiations over integrating the two forces ahead of the intended restoration of civilian rule.

There was disagreement over which general would be subordinate to the other, and how quickly the RSF would be incorporated into the Sudanese military.

Heavy fighting broke out on April 8, with the cities of Khartoum and Obdurman being turned into battlefields.

Though two ceasefires were agreed upon by the warring factions, both failed to stop the violence.

However, speaking with our correspondent on Thursday, the Secretary-General, NANS in Sudan, Mohammed, said no student had been hurt in the course of the war but he lamented that students were experiencing food shortages, electricity outages, and telecommunication blackouts.

Mohammed disclosed that he had written to the Federal Government about their situation, adding that moves to evacuate the stranded citizens were in top gear.

He further revealed that 1,262 Nigerian students had filled the evacuation forms as of Wednesday night.

Nigerian embassy

The Secretary-General said, “Everything is under control because the Nigerian Embassy in Sudan has spoken to the Nigerian government and preparations are ongoing. The Nigerian government is trying to send in some planes to evacuate Nigerian students in Sudan.

“Also, the members of the Parent-Guardian Association of Nigeria whose children or wards are schooling in Sudan have spoken to the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa to assist in the evacuation of Nigerian students. In summary, the situation concerning the Nigerian students here is under control.

“Presently, none of the Nigerian students in Sudan is hurt because everyone is indoors and they have all cooperated with us. So far, no light, water, bad (telecoms) network and some students have been complaining of no food and they cannot go out and restock.

“The current number of Nigerian students that filled their forms as of last night that are ready for the evacuation is 1,262.”

Also, the President of the Nasarawa State Students Association in Sudan, Al-Ameen Ahmad, said the students took precautionary measures to avoid being hurt or killed, adding that the association tried its best in providing food to the students.

Ahmad noted that he was in touch with the authorities to facilitate the evacuation of the students, noting that the list of prospective evacuees had been compiled.

He stated, “We do not have available flights to Khartoum. So, we are just going through the processes to see how the government can help evacuate Nigerian students. We have compiled the list of students that want to be evacuated back to Nigeria. We hope things get better.

“Before the Federal Government decided to intervene, we have been taking precautionary measures such as staying indoors to avoid being hurt. From the students’ association, we are using what we have to maintain ourselves and also reach out to others. There are also some supermarkets in safer places. We go there and buy foodstuffs when we know that it is safe, and we share with our colleagues.”

Narrating his ordeal, a student living in Khartoum, Abdullah Zakari, told The PUNCH that the gunshots were terrifying.

Zakari noted, “I am facing hunger because the markets where I stay are closed. We are suffering here. Every now and then, we hear gunshots. I feel insecure because the gunshots have been on for more than a week. Even as a man, it is scary. Things are really hard here. We are facing a lot. Where I stay is very close to the barracks and you can imagine the gunshots.”

Reliving the horrors of the conflict, the President of the International University of Africa in Sudan, Mohammed Jilambu, stated, “The situation here in Sudan is horrible as students have been experiencing the awful sounds of gunshots, artilleries, bombings, the collapse of residential and governmental buildings and it’s still ongoing for almost a week non-stop.

“Most of the residents are leaving the capital city Khartoum to neighbouring states. Our students across Khartoum are in terrible condition and we are currently experiencing a shortage of foodstuffs, an electricity blackout for almost a week in some areas, a lack of water, lack of medication for some of our female students who are critically ill. Medical facilities are not accessible; most of the hospitals are closed.

“We are calling on the Nigerian government and humanitarian agencies for immediate support because the situation keeps on escalating on a daily basis.”

On his part, the President of the Jigawa State Students Association in Sudan, Umar Abubakar who lived in Mujahideen, said he initially dismissed the conflict as a protest that would subside after a few days.

Abubakar explained that he was jolted to reality following the escalation of violence and killings of the people by the two parties involved in the clashes.

He said, “At first, I thought the conflict is like the normal protest the Sudanese periodically embark in their quest for democratic representation, but the situation is totally different as innocent citizens are being killed and maltreated as a result of this battle.’’

He added, “Yesterday (Wednesday), around 1 am, I received a call from some sisters that a medical student needed immediate medical attention. I could not reach her because there was no vehicle to take me to the place.

“The sisters around her tried their best to maintain her vitals until morning. We went to five different hospitals and unfortunately, all the hospitals were closed.

“With the help of Almighty Allah, we found one hospital, but there was no single medical doctor. One of the sisters that escorted us cried before the only nurse present in the hospital attended to us.

“I could not find a single pharmacy to buy the prescribed drugs. No pharmacy was open. The RSF (fighters) are everywhere. Everyone is terrified. I saw dead bodies on the ground and no one cared. We are stuck in darkness and our fellows are starving and lack basic items.”

Nigerians safe

In an interview with The PUNCH on Thursday, the Chairman of the Nigerian Community (Elders Forum) in Sudan, Dr Hashim Na’Allah, stated, “The only challenge Nigerians in Sudan, including students and businessmen face is the lack of movement due to the security situation in Sudan.

“One cannot go to a market like before and only a few traders could be seen at the market which leads to a shortage of food. We received a letter today from the Nigerian Embassy in Sudan to evacuate students and other Nigerians if the situation in Sudan does not improve. The embassy is still monitoring the situation but it is still making plans to evacuate Nigerians back home.”

Speaking with the Voice of America, Hausa Service, Umar Farouk alleged that unlike their counterparts from Niger Republic, Cameroon, and Kenya who were regularly updated on the precarious situation of the war by their respective embassies in Sudan, there was no information from the Nigerian Embassy.

Farouk said all Nigerian students were safe and that even in a university close to a military facility where some of the soldiers entered, nothing untoward happened to the students.

He ruled out the possibility of the over 2000 Nigerian students leaving the country either through the airport or moving to the border with neighbouring Egypt, adding that doing so would be difficult as “the airport is already closed for operation.”

“And if we are to move to the border with Egypt, how can such a large number of Nigerian students embark on such a long trip?” he asked.

Meanwhile, Japan, Uganda and Tanzania have commenced the evacuation of 545 citizens trapped in the deadly war in Sudan.

Japan has sent a military plane to evacuate 60 Japanese citizens while the Tanzanian government is at the point of airlifting 210 nationals.

Also, the Uganda foreign ministry disclosed that it was working to evacuate 275 nationals trapped in Khartoum.

After appraising the situation in Sudan, the Federal Government on Thursday said it had requested permission to evacuate Nigerians, especially students, trapped in the armed conflict.

It also reiterated the call for a ceasefire to enable the evacuation of foreign citizens.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Francisca Omayuli, on Thursday.

The statement read, “The Federal Government is deeply concerned about the escalation of conflict in Sudan between Sudan Armed Forces and the paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces, which has brought death and untold suffering to civilians.

“The non-adherence of the warring parties to numerous international calls for a ceasefire has worsened the plight of civilians and made it impossible to embark on their evacuation. Nigeria, therefore, wishes to reiterate the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire.’’

“In the meantime, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in contact with the Sudanese authorities and has, through the Nigerian Embassy in Khartoum, made an official request for permission to evacuate Nigerian students and other members of the Nigerian community who may wish to depart the country.

“Additionally, the Nigerian Embassy has created Whatsapp and Telegram platforms for the students and other Nigerians in Sudan, for the purpose of proper coordination and regular updates. Nigerians in the country are advised to remain indoors.”

330 killed

Worried by the escalating hostilities in Sudan, the World Health Organisation has expressed concern over the rising casualties which it put at 330.

The Director-General of WHO, Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus in a statement on Thursday, also noted that nearly 3,200 people were injured.

Condemning the situation, he stated, “Over 330 people have died so far, and nearly 3200 are injured. I condemn all loss of life, especially attacks on civilians and health care.

“Reports of forces occupying health facilities are also deeply concerning. Attacks on health care are a flagrant violation of international and the right to health – they must stop!’’

“The lack of safe access to electricity, food, water, personnel, and the diminishing medical supplies are making it nearly impossible for many health facilities to function at the exact time when there are thousands injured in need of urgent care,” he noted.

The WHO chief, however, urged all sides to respect the truce so that those trapped by the fighting can seek refuge and access food, water, and medicine.
