When it comes to contract and employment terms one needs to be very careful.

If you are not careful, you will become a slave to your employers. Take your time, calm down and go through your terms of employment, and make sure you ask questions.

Another thing I notice is that somany don't know the difference between net salary and gross salary.

Nairaland / General / Nigerian Academics: The Job, The Passion, The Disappointment by Adejoncy01(m): 6:52am On Dec 08, 2023
Nigerian Academics: the job, the passion, the disappointment

07/12/2023

I travelled home in 2012 after my PhD and one of my older cousins asked when I would become a Professor. I laughed and told him it would still take some years and I jokingly told him I was not keen on becoming a Professor. He became angry at my response and said I should get the Professor for them even if I don't want it. After I left him I began to wonder what is in that rank that some people want at all cost.

I can still remember the huge congratulatory messages I received after my friend and colleague shared on Facebook the news of my promotion to that rank. Sometimes I reflect on those messages and imagine how rich I would have been if those congratulatory messages could be transformed into cash. Here we are struggling and some of us can't even drive our cars any longer. The Nigerian Professor.

Becoming a Professor, the peak in academia is something most academics look forward to. The title still comes with some prestige and perceived false benefits attached to it by outsiders. I once read a post on Facebook that said professors are stingy. Poor professors, and the public want them to spend the money they don't have. I went to buy a seat cover for my car a few years ago and the seller said lecturers have money but refused to spend it. I asked how much he thinks a professor is earning and he said it can't be less than N700,000. I laughed very hard.

I have written a lot on the remuneration of academics in Nigerian public universities but many still don't believe the figures. Yeah! Too bad to be true as compared with their perception. I had a discussion with one of our PG students who is a lecturer in a state polytechnic about salary disparity in the Nigerian public sector yesterday and the salaries of university lecturers came into the discussion. I told him the figures and the smile on his face showed that he didn't believe it but couldn't say I was lying. So, I login to the university portal and showed him my payslip. The gross, the deduction, and the net. We met again today and he said till yesterday, he never believed that a Professor on step 4 was earning less than N600,000.

Again this is the salary of academics in any federal government university in Nigeria. The quoted value is for step 2 the rank:
~The Assistant Lecturer's net salary with all his allowances is N118,279 (105 USD).
~Lecturer II's net salary with all his allowances is N129,724 (115 USD).
~Lecturer I net salary with all his allowances is: N160,809 (142 USD)
~Senior Lecturer's net salary with all his allowances is: N222,229 (197 USD)
~Reader (Associate Professor) net salary with all his allowances is: N277,179 (245 USD)
~The professor's net salary with all his allowances is N332,833 (294 USD).

The University workers are perhaps the only federal government workers whose salary is yet to be reviewed since 2009, that is for 14 years despite inflation. Those who were already professors in 2009 are still receiving the same salary since then to date. Your comfort is key to your output.

Aside from the academic work, and the research and publication work that forms the bulk of your promotion criteria, you are loaded with administrative responsibilities without responsibility allowance. They call it 'community services'. You can be denied promotion if you don't have enough of the said "community services".

If you happen to travel outside the University for a conference and you are lucky to be funded, the travel allowance is as follows:
~Duty Tour Allowance (DTA) for the professorial cadre is N16,000 per night.
~Duty Tour Allowance (DTA) for Senior Lecturer cadre and below is N12,000 per night.
~The transportation allowance is N20 per km.

If a Professor is to travel 200 km for an assignment that lasts for a day, he will get a DTA of N32,000 for 2 nights for his hotel accommodation for 2 nights and feeding and N8,000 for transportation. That is a total of N40,000. Despite the fact that FG has approved a new DTA for public service in September 2022, the universities can't afford the new rate a year later. I applaud the patience of my colleagues, but the patient dogs are dying of hunger.

Meanwhile, education is said to be key to national development.

Dear prospective academics, I love academia. For me, it is not a job but a way of life. However, ask questions before you wish to join academia and become a Professor. The job as it is at the moment can't pay your bills for a decent life.

Career / Re: How Many Months Salary Is Advisable To Use For House Rent? by Gamesmart: 11:57am On Dec 07, 2023
The less you earn and the higher the cost of accommodation where you live, the less you have choices of how many months salary you use for rent.

If you earn very well, where you are in the top bracket of earners:

35% of the gross salary of someone very comfortable in your locality is the maximum reasonable rent expense.

25% of the gross salary of someone very comfortable in your locality is the best and most reasonable rent expense.

20% of the gross salary of someone very comfortable in your locality is either awoof or you dey tight.

Paying more than that 35% top range is you now flexing and showing off your wealth and what you can afford.

The gross salary of someone very comfortable in Lagos is N12m! Obviously, it would be different for other states.

If you are an average earner, you can still use the same percentages based on your gross salary. You just can't use it if you earn peanuts, except you want to live in a slum.

Politics / New Wage Begins April, FG Votes ₦‎24 Trillion For Salaries by ogododo: 7:57am On Dec 01, 2023
The Federal Government on Thursday said a new minimum wage regime would come into effect on April 1, 2024.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Idris Mohammed, who disclosed this in an interview with The PUNCH in Abuja, said the current N30,000 minimum wage would expire at the end of March 2024.

Mohammed said this on Thursday as an analysis of the 2024 –2026 Fiscal Framework budgets by our correspondents indicated that the Federal Government would spend N24.66tn on salaries in 2024, 2025, and 2026.

Following the removal of the fuel subsidy by President Bola Tinubu on May 29, 2023, the Federal Government agreed to pay N35,000 to each of its workers to cushion the effect of the subsidy removal.

But the organised Labour insisted that the N35,000 wage award was a temporary measure, adding that the minimum wage should be reviewed in 2024.

The Federal Government’s team and the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council on October 18, 2019, agreed on the implementation of the N30,00 minimum wage after months of negotiations.

However, Labour unions on Thursday confirmed that they had started a negotiation process with the Federal Government, adding that based on the country’s labour law, the minimum wage should be reviewed every five years.

The Nigeria Labour Congress National President, Joe Ajaero, recently said, “It is open knowledge that the review of the national minimum wage is a matter of the law which is expected to happen in 2024.”

On his part, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed, told The PUNCH that the improved take-home pay was meant to replace the temporary palliative measure put in place by the government to ameliorate the hardship caused by the fuel subsidy removal.

New wage regime

He said, “Certainly, there is a new wage regime that will come in on April 1, 2024. That is why these palliatives were targeted so they would cushion economic hardship before then. In our negotiation with Labour, we said that the wage issue was not something one could just fix. A committee that will also involve Labour itself will work on it.

“The committee is being constituted and we are talking to Labour about it. And by the time this current wage regime expires by the end of March, we will expect that a new wage will begin by April. It is in this wage regime that we will now have a proper salary structure for workers across the length and breadth of Nigeria. We expect that the private sector and state governors will also do the same.”

A top official of the NLC, in an interview with The PUNCH, said the organised Labour had initiated talks with the government

He said, “By April 1, 2024, the current minimum wage will expire. We have all agreed to set up a national wage negotiation committee, and that the committee should comprise all parties.’’

Also, the Head of Information of the NLC, Benson Upah, in an interview with The PUNCH said, “The new minimum wage is to come into effect next year.”

N24.66tn for salaries

As the organised Labour demands a new minimum wage, an analysis of the 2024 –2026 Fiscal Framework shows that the Federal Government intends to spend 29.18 per cent of its total budgets for 2024, 2025, and 2026 on salaries, overheads, and pensions.

The total amount budgeted for these three items amounts to N24.66tn; 29.18 per cent of the N84.50tn budgeted for the three years.

With anticipated salary increases from 2024 amid worsening economic conditions, personnel costs, and the two others are expected to jump by 8.51 per cent from the amount (N7.36tn) budget in 2023 to N7.99tn in 2024.

It is then expected to rise by 2.41 per cent to N8.18tn in 2025, and then by 3.77 per cent to N8.49tn in 2026. The amount pales when compared to the N23.37tn (27.65 per cent of its total budget) the government intends to spend on capital expenditure in the period under review.

This signifies the continuation of a culture of high overheads at the expense of high fiscal deficits. As of the end of September 2023, the Federal Government had devoted 29.76 per cent (N3.78tn) of its total spending (N12.7tn) on salaries.

The amount spent on salaries is 157.14 per cent more than the N1.47tn that has been spent on capital allocations for the year.

The government said, “The actual spending was N12.7tn. Of this amount, N5.79tn was for debt service, and N3.78tn for personnel costs, including pensions.

“Only about N1.47tn (25 per cent of the pro-rata budget) has been released for MDAs’ capital expenditure as of September 2023.”

The Federal Government has about N1.5 million workers and it will review minimum wage by 2024. There are concerns that the government is operating a bloated civil service with many agencies with overlapping functions. This has led to calls for agency mergers and scrapping, where they might apply.

With salaries weighing heavily on its spending, the government, in its 2024 – 2026 fiscal framework, said, “The budget deficit is projected to be N9.18tn in 2024, i.e., N4.6tn down from N11.60tn budgeted in 2023.

“The proposed deficit represents about 50 per cent of total Federal Government’s revenues and 3.88 per cent of the estimated GDP (gross Domestic Product ). The high projected level of fiscal deficit in 2024 is partly attributable to the proposed salary review of Federal workers across board, increased pension obligations, and higher debt service cost.

“At 3.88 per cent, the projected level of deficit is higher than the three per cent threshold stipulated in the Fiscal Responsibility Act (FRA), 2007, but significantly lower than the 2023 level of 6.11 per cent; FRA 2007, however, allows the government to exceed the 3 per cent threshold if justified by threats to national security.”

The fiscal deficit for the three years under review is expected to total N30.89tn. In June 2023, the World Bank disclosed that the Federal Government’s spending on personnel costs and debt servicing exceeded total revenues in 2022.

According to the Washington-based bank, this was the first time the Federal Government’s personnel costs and debt servicing surpassed its total revenue. It noted that the government is spending a lot on these costs, leaving little room for capital expenditure.

It declared, “Overall, the rigidity of expenditure has increased, squeezing fiscal space for the discretionary spending needed to meet development objectives.

Personnel costs and interest payments comprise a growing share of total general government expenditures (59 per cent in 2022) and for the first time in 2022 exceeded total government revenues (102 percent).”

Rising personnel cost is leaving little room for investments in infrastructure and in his budget presentation speech, President Bola Tinubu disclosed that the government would leverage the private sector to plug its capital expenditure spending holes.

He said, “In view of the limited resources available through the federal budget, we are also exploring Public Private Partnership arrangements to finance critical infrastructure.

“We, therefore, invite the private sector to partner with us to ensure that our fiscal, trade, and monetary policies, as well as our developmental programmes and projects, succeed in unlocking the latent potential of our people and other natural endowments, in line with our national aspirations.”

Recently, the Minister of Budget and National Economic Planning, Abubakar Bagudu, declared that the government was only managing to pay salaries considering its dwindling revenue sources.

Enoh unveils six-point sports development agenda
The minister represented by the Director (International Cooperation), Dr Sampson Ebimaro at an event said, “Government faces enormous challenge especially now, the government is facing revenue deficit. There’s no money anywhere in the country, the government is just managing to pay salaries.

“The growth rate is very slow, and the population growth is fast pacing and increasing. unemployment is surging amid high inflation. These are issues which non-governmental organisations must take on board in helping the government to cover the space government could not cover.”

Over-bloated salaries

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives, on Thursday, condemned what it described as an over-bloated personnel cost in the 2024 budget.

The House therefore urged the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission to summon ministries, departments, and agencies over the alleged over-bloated cost.

A member of the House, Sada Soli, drew the attention of his colleagues to what he described as the ‘over-bloated personnel cost’ of ministries, departments, and agencies in the budget cycles.

At the debate on the general principles of the 2024 budget on the floor of the House on Thursday, Soli, a member of the House of Representatives from Katsina State, described the budget as ‘unique’ in a number of ways.

Most importantly, he called on the House to take a close look at the excessive personnel cost of MDAs, saying, “Let the committees’ chairmen look at the issue of personnel cost because they are over-bloated.

“I know that the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission used to summon agencies to come for audits on their personnel cost because it is over-bloated. This is very important and we need to look at it.”

He also spoke about the states and the Federal Government collaboration saying, “For the first time, I am hearing in the budget speech that the President is mentioning collaboration with subnationals.”

He added that such collaboration would encourage states to make adjustments to their budget peculiarities.

He further stressed that the National Assembly should pay attention to the procurement process, describing it as “too cumbersome” even as he urged the Federal Government to “clean up” the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System.

The House commenced the debate on the N27.5tn 2024 budget on Thursday, preparatory to passage for second reading.

Leading the debate on the general principles of the budget, House Leader, Julius Ihonvbere, commended the President for putting together what he called a holistic budget that was meant to cater for Nigerians of all walks of life.

He said, “In considering the budget of any nation or organisation, you must first consider a few principles. The first is what you have or what are you going to earn. The second is what are you going to spend?

“The third is how your budget did in the previous years. The fourth is what is the difference in this particular budget that you are presenting? And finally, there is the global, domestic, and sub-national context in which your budget is supposed to function.

“The budget drew our attention to the Renewed Hope Agenda so that we have a holistic understanding of where the President was coming from and where he intended to take Nigeria. The budget focused on fiscal challenges in the economy, and the need to tackle insecurity and expand the economic space.

“Special attention was given to education, which particularly made me very happy. The budget tends to look at strategic areas into which the budget will deploy resources.”

Speaking on the security mileage of the 2024 proposed budget, the House Leader said, “I cannot go to my constituency because of the dreaded Auchi-Benin expressway. There is no other way to get there (his village) because of security issues.

“And I am sure, we have moved motion upon motion on insecurity. And I believe that when security is properly tackled in this country, among other things, there will be an increase in the production of goods and services.

“Many businesses today close by 6pm because they are afraid that they will be raided. Many farmers do not go to their farms because of bandits, kidnappers, and assassins.

“Transporters have reduced their fleets to safe areas, similarly, because of insecurity. Even parents have withdrawn their kids from certain schools and are paying double the fees in certain areas that they consider to be safe. The focus of this budget on security as a prime area is a very positive move, for which we must give support.”

That said, Ihonvbere called on his colleagues to give the budget proposal an accelerated consideration.

On his part, a member representing Dambowa/Gwoza/Chibok Federal Constituency, Borno State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, Ahmadu Jaha, argued that the 2024 budget proposal was a demonstration of President Tinubu’s readiness to address the infrastructural challenges the nation had been battling for decades.

“By providing a substantial amount of money or a reasonable figure for capital projects shows that the government is serious about embarking on a series of developmental projects.

“As we are all aware, of all evils, unemployment is the worst because an idle mind is the devil’s workshop. By diversifying the economy, there is definitely going to be a development of our population which by extension will give our people a sense of belonging,” he added.

In his contribution, The House Committee Chairman on the Navy, Yusuf Gagdi, called on his colleagues to queue behind the President to realise the goal of his administration.

He said, “The President is ready for business. Our own is to provide robust oversight engagement. We must do this to ensure that we support Tinubu to deliver the dividends of good governance, otherwise, the expectation of Nigerians will not be satisfied.”

Gagdi who represents Kanke/Pankshin/Kanam Federal Constituency, Plateau State commended Tinubu’s prioritisation of capital projects, adding that for no reason should the country borrow to fund recurrent expenditure.

An opposition lawmaker, Isah Ali championed a different cause when he was given the floor to make his contribution. Ali, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party representing Balanga/Biliri Federal Constituency, Gombe State, argued that until the lives of Nigerians are touched positively by the budget, the allocations to sundry sectors make no real sense.

“I want to see a budget where Nigerians will have a sense of belonging. We, as lawmakers, must diligently scrutinise the budget because this is what is important. It is one thing to have a good budget, it is another thing to have it implemented. Let us ensure that at the end of the day, we will have at least 70-80 per cent implementation of the budget,” he advised.

In the upper legislative chamber, the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, stated that the appropriation bill would be passed for a second reading on Friday.

The debate on general principles of the budget was led by the leader of the Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele ( APC Ekiti Central ).

He said. “The budget is still high on recurrent expenditure at 40% of the budget especially with a deficit of N9.8 trillion that has to be financed from borrowing.

“ The alternative which would be suicidal would be to cut expenditure and shrink the economy as it could lead to massive job loss.”

In his remarks after the debate, Akpabio said, “The budget will be passed for second reading on Friday this week after contributions from other Senators who have indicated interest to do so .”

Investment / Top 5 Best Loan Apps With Low-interest Rates In Nigeria, 2023 by nairaCompare: 9:05am On Nov 27, 2023
When it comes to getting a loan in Nigeria, it only makes sense to find the best loan apps in Nigeria low-interest rates. Loan apps are mobile applications that allow users to borrow money from lenders without going through the traditional banking system.
They work by offering borrowers an advance on their future income, similar to payday loans. To use a loan app, you need to download the app from your app store, install it on your phone, and register with your correct details and any documents required.
Your credit score will be calculated, and you will receive a loan offer. You can also check your credit score on nairaCompare .

How loan apps in Nigeria work
Loan apps operate as digital platforms that provide individuals with access to short-term personal loans or credit.
Here's a general overview of how these apps typically operate:

● Application and Registration

Users need to download the loan app from their respective app stores and install it on their smartphones.
To use the app, users usually need to register by providing personal information such as name, phone number, email address, and sometimes additional details like their bank account number.

● Identity Verification
Most loan apps in Nigeria use identity verification methods to ensure that users are who they claim to be. This often involves sending a verification code to the user's registered phone number.

● Credit Assessment

Once registered, the app assesses the user's creditworthiness. This process typically involves analysing the user's financial data, including their credit history, if available, and sometimes other data sources.
Some loan apps may use alternative credit scoring methods, such as analysing smartphone usage patterns, to determine creditworthiness.

● Loan Application

Users can apply for a loan within the app by specifying the desired loan amount and the repayment period.
Loan apps usually offer varying loan amounts and repayment terms, depending on the user's creditworthiness.

● Loan Approval and Disbursement

If the user meets the app's eligibility criteria, their loan application is approved.
The approved loan amount is disbursed directly into the user's registered bank account or mobile wallet.

● Repayment
Loan repayment terms and methods are outlined in the app. Users are expected to repay the loan within the specified timeframe.
Loan apps typically provide options for making repayments, such as linking a bank account or using mobile money services.

● Late Payments and Penalties

Failure to repay the loan on time may result in late payment penalties and additional fees. Some loan apps may report delinquent payments to credit bureaus, which can negatively impact a user's credit score.

● Repeat Borrowing
Many loan apps encourage responsible borrowing and on-time repayments by offering increased loan limits or lower interest rates to loyal and responsible users.
Users who repay loans on time and maintain a positive borrowing history may have access to larger loan amounts in the future.

● Security and Data Privacy
Loan apps in Nigeria also have a responsibility to prioritise the security of user data and financial information. As a borrower, you should ensure you are using reputable and secure loan apps.

Tips on how to improve your chances of getting a loan
To obtain a loan in Nigeria, each lender has its own approval criteria, and meeting one lender's requirements doesn't guarantee approval from another.
Being financially responsible and well-prepared is key to improving your chances of getting approved for a loan.
This also involves understanding the lending process and being a responsible borrower.
Here are some tips to help you increase your chances of getting approved for a loan:

1. Check and Improve Your Credit Score:

Review your credit reports for errors and dispute any inaccuracies.
Pay bills on time to establish a positive payment history.
Reduce credit card balances to lower your credit utilization ratio.
Avoid opening new credit accounts before applying for a loan.

2. Choose the Right Type of Loan

Understand the different types of loans available (e.g., personal loans, mortgages, auto loans) and choose the one that best fits your needs.
Match the loan term to your financial situation, as longer terms may have lower monthly payments but higher overall costs.

3. Build a Stable Employment History
Lenders prefer borrowers with a stable job history, so avoid frequent job changes before applying for a loan.
Be prepared to provide documentation of your income and employment, such as pay stubs and tax returns.

4. Maintain a Healthy Debt-to-Income (DTI) Ratio

The Debt-to-Income (DTI) ratio is a financial metric that lenders use to assess a borrower's ability to manage debt and make payments on new credit obligations.
It is a crucial factor in determining whether an individual or household qualifies for a loan or credit line.
The DTI ratio is expressed as a percentage and is calculated by dividing a borrower's total monthly debt payments by their gross monthly income.
Pay down existing debts to lower your DTI before applying for a new loan.

5. Save for a Down Payment
If you're applying for a mortgage or auto loan, having a down payment can improve your chances of approval and secure better terms.
Lenders often require a down payment as a sign of your commitment to the loan.

6. Establish a Relationship with the Lender

If you have a pre-existing relationship with a bank or credit union, consider applying for a loan there as they may offer more favourable terms.
Attend in-person meetings or consultations with the lender to discuss your application.

7. Shop Around for Lenders

Don't settle for the first lender you encounter. Compare rates, terms, and fees from multiple lenders to find the best deal. Consider using online loan marketplaces to compare offers from various lenders.

8. Consider a Co-Signer or Collateral
If your credit is less than ideal, having a co-signer with good credit can increase your chances of approval.
Collateral, such as a car or home, can also make it easier to secure a loan, as it provides security for the lender.

9. Be Patient
Sometimes, loan applications get denied. Don't immediately reapply with another lender. Take time to address the reasons for the denial and improve your financial situation.

Don't forget to visit nairaCompare to learn more about loan apps, savings and other information you may need to grow your finances.

Politics / Why State Police Won’t Work – Ex-IGP Okiro by SoNature(m): 6:47pm On Nov 26, 2023
A former Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mike Okiro, said on Friday that the decentralisation of the Nigeria Police Force would not achieve its desired objective.

He said this was because the factors that led to its failure in the past have not been addressed.

Okiro spoke with journalists on the sidelines of the 2023 Convention of the Old Seminarians Association of Nigeria, hosted by the Clerk to the Senate, Chinedu Akubueze, in Abuja.

The former IGP went down memory lane to explain the advent of the Nigerian police, explaining that the authorities of the sub-regional institutions had their own police separate from the ones being controlled by the central government.

He said the state police idea might not work due to the paucity of funds in both the state and local government areas.

He wondered how the states and local government areas that could not effectively pay the salaries of their workers would be able to fund their own police.

Okiro, however, said the only way the state police could work was for Nigeria to embrace the Canadian model.

The Canadian model, according to him, would involve the states recruiting police personnel who would be funded by the Federal Government.

He said, “The only way we can have state police in Nigeria is to adopt the Canadian model, where every region has its own police employed by the region and paid by the Federal Government.

“For example, in Nigeria, every governor would employ their own police and equip them while they would be paid by the Federal Government.

“Before the advent of what we have now, we had ‘dandoka’, we had police in the West, and we also had police in the East.

“Local governments had their police, but because of the behaviour of the local police officers, during the time of the former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, in 1971 or thereabout, he turned it to the Nigeria Police Force.

“I am opposed to the state police because of the benefit of hindsight—how they behaved in those days—unless you want to throw away the benefits of history.”

The former IGP lamented that the police is going down the drain, confronted with so many problems.

He said, “There is no equipment, no manpower, no welfare. They are demoralised and frustrated.

“We need to encourage the police to do something.

“I have equally said time without number; everything has advantages and disadvantages, merits and demerits.

“If you adopt state police, the state government that cannot pay teachers, nurses, and doctors, can they pay the police?

“You cannot afford to owe the police one month’s salary; insecurity will be at the highest level in that state. If the state governments can’t pay the civil servants, I wonder how they can pay the police.”

He appealed to the Federal Government to invest heavily in equipping and training the police in order to tackle the current insecurity in the country.

Okiro said, “There is gross insecurity in the country. You know Nigeria is part of the world. Insecurity is a global issue, but every country sits down to plan and devise methods to check insecurity.

“In Nigeria, the government is equally trying to check insecurity. You cannot get 100 per cent, but you can be sure you have done your best and leave the rest to God.

“The government should ensure that security agencies are well equipped and trained. Police is short on manpower; they should recruit more people and give them equipment to solve the problem.

“You cannot solve the problem of insecurity with bare hands. We are in a modern, digitalised world.

“So, you fight insecurity with technology. The government should do something to ensure that security agencies are well equipped to confront these criminals because they go to the internet. So, they are ahead of the security agencies.

“For you to succeed, the security agencies should be ahead of them and tackle them before they do what they want to do.”

The Clerk to the Senate, in his welcome address, identified a lack of patriotism among Nigerians as a major ill bedevilling the country.

Akubueze said, “The Nigerian society is bedevilled by self-imposed ills. occasioned by our lack of collective sense of patriotism, which ordinarily should emphasise love for the nation rather than undue recourse to ethno-religious cleavages and clannish leanings.

“Here in OSAN, we are set to chart a new course of national consciousness aimed at cementing the bonds that hold us together as Nigerians rather than the dissimilarities that tend to tear us apart.

“Our sense of fraternity is one that recognises the fact that we are of diverse ethnic extractions yet bonded together by a common heritage, a scenario that has helped in fostering love, camaraderie, and a collective sense of responsibility and purposefulness within our rank and file.

“Of course, we have no doubts whatsoever that OSAN is an association whose future prosperity is guaranteed, a brotherhood of likeminded individuals whose members would, within the next few years, seize the opportunities open to them to advance their wellbeing as well as that of the larger Nigerian society.

“To actualise our dreams within record time, all hands must be on deck. We must pull resources together, both human and material, in order to create a prosperous and glorious future.”

Politics / Labour Party Press Statement On The Nlc Strike by Enemyofpeace: 9:10pm On Nov 15, 2023
*LABOUR PARTY PRESS STATEMENTS:*

OPEN LETTER TO NIGERIANS

NLC/TUC INDEFINITE STRIKE IS A SPONSORED CONQUEST OF NIGERIA STATE THROUGH INSURRECTION

FELLOW NIGERIANS

The contemnor or contemner Labour unions resolved to embark on strike and protests beginning from Tuesday November 14,2023,after the joint NEC meeting of the NLC and the TUC is not only a full stretch disobedience to the order of the National Industrial Court, which has earlier directed the labour unions to stop further strike action but also a calculated attempt to foster anarchy ,create chaos and civil disobedience against a constitutionally elected and Legitimate Civilian Administration which we all as Citizens of our dear country must resist

The indiscriminate use of NLC/TUC to strangulate democracy and prosecute personal agenda of political and Economy decimation of our country is an affirmation of their desperation to Conquer Nigeria

The principle of Natural justice does not allow the Sin of an individual to be visited on the society to which the individual belong nor is it morally justified to judge the conduct of a society by the conduct of a few

We are therefore unable to compute any form of juxtaposition as to why the NLC/TUC are hell bent on destroying the population of over 220miilion Nigerians over a personal incident that involved the NLC president whose lack of ability to Distinguish between Labour activities and partisans politics led to assault on him in Owerri by unknown Mob

The NLC/TUC has manifestly and incompetently displayed gross deficiencies in their capabilities and capacities to managed and maintain a clear distinctions between their primary role as a defender of workers' interests and involvement in partisan politics with their active membership of Labour Party which has deviated their focus from labor issues and the welfares of its members.

Most Unfortunately, the present Labour leadership under Joe Ajaero has now become the worst in the history of Labour Union because recent events casted a negative aspersions on the credibility of the NLC/TUC as its current leadership, appears to be consumed undisputably with identity crisis.

Orders of court as made must be obeyed until set aside. Orders of the court are to be respected and obeyed. The dignity and honour of court cannot be maintained if its Orders are treated disdainfully and scornfully without due respect.

Consequently, non-compliance with an order of the industrial court makes the strike incompetent and illegal . Thus the purported commencement of the Nation wide strike today 14th November 2023 amounted to a blatant disobedience to the Orders of court

The latest onslaught against the Nigerian state raises concerns about Joe Ajaero's dual identity role as the NLC president and Membership of Labour Party even when the Imo State chapter of the NLC has publicly distanced themselves from the coup plot when the state council confirmed that there were no outstanding salary issues, a move that suggest Joe Ajaero's mission was more about political ratmatax than genuine workers concerns

The joint Labour Union incessant and deadly attacks against the Nigerian state have precipitated a huge conflict of interest within their ranks and have severely damaged the credibility of the Labour organization because their leadership have abandoned the protection of workers interest for partisan politics

Similarly, the security agencies are advised to be more proactive and vigilant to act very fast and protect the national assets from hoodlums, hiding under the labour unions.

There is urgent need by the security agencies to issue stern warning to Nigeria workers for them to respect the law.The NLC and TUC must not be used by any thoroughly demystified political misfits or their agents to ground the economy.

The Lamidi Apapa led National Working Committee ,while distancing the party from the proposed strike, calls for an immediate action to quell any civil unrest as soon as discovered. The party calls the NLC and the TUC to order, while advising their leadership under Joe Ajaero and Festus Osifo to seek redress in the court, instead of taking to the streets to disrupt the economic activities of the nation.

The security agencies must compel the leadership of the labour unions and their affiliates to seek peaceful means of resolution of any disputes from the government. It is a coup to democracy and to the governments at all level, for the labour unions to go for strike, while a court order stopping further strike still subsists.

The Nigerian Government as a matter of urgency must now through the Ministry of Labour and Employment considered immediately the unbundling of Labour Union in our country through the creation of three additional Labour Union namely : the Nigeria Trade Union Congress (NTUC), Labour Unity Front (LUF), United Labour Congress (ULC) which would served as alternative platforms for interested workers aside the two already politically infested NLC/TUC

The National Chairman of Labour party Alh Bashiru Lamidi Apapa wishes to remind both NLC/TUC leadership that :

Section 37 of the Criminal Code Act in Nigeria states that :

(1) Any person who levies war against the State, in order to intimidate or overawe the President or the Governor of a State, is guilty of treason, and is liable to the punishment of death.

(2) Any person conspiring with any person, either within or without Nigeria, to levy war against the State with intent to cause such levying of war as would be treason if committed by a citizen of Nigeria, is guilty of treason and is liable to the punishment of death:

The National Security Adviser must now as a matter of urgency activate the Chief of Defense Staff, Inspector General of Police and all security agencies to be fully prepared to crush this rebellion madness

Finally in view of the above, our party here- by further disassociated ourselves from those arsonist planning the insurrection through civil disobedience and unrest in order to overthrown and Conquer Nigeria

The time is now for all Nigerians to come together to crush this violent uprising against the Federal Republic of Nigeria

Thank you all

Signed:
Dr Abayomi Arabambi (FBAU)
National Publicity Secretary

Politics / Strike: Aviation Workers Opt Out, Ports Grounded by Ikaeniyan0: 5:51am On Nov 15, 2023
The nationwide strike initiated by the Nigeria Labour Congress commenced on Tuesday, revealing partial compliance within various sectors of the economy.

The NLC, in collaboration with its affiliate, the Trade Union Congress, declared an indefinite strike starting from November 14, 2023.

The decision to launch the strike was driven by alleged infractions and encroachments on workers’ rights, including the assault on NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero and the government’s persistent refusal to implement agreed-upon measures.

Additional grievances encompassed the non-payment of backlog salaries, pensions, discriminatory salary practices, and non-compliance with the national minimum wage.

Despite an ex-parte application filed by the Federal Government and the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice seeking to restrain the unions from proceeding with the planned strike, approximately 19 unions defied the court order.

This defiance raises questions about potential implications across various sectors and the government’s response to the workers’ demands..

The extensive array of participating unions, spanning education, healthcare, telecommunications, local government, judiciary, banking, maritime, electricity, parliamentary staff, and railway workers, underscores the far-reaching impact and solidarity characterizing the ongoing nationwide strike.

In September, the Organised Private Sector of Nigeria issued a warning to the NLC and TUC, underscoring the substantial threat that strike actions pose to the country’s economy.

Expressing concerns about potential adverse effects on economic stability, the private sector urged a reconsideration of such actions to safeguard the nation’s economic interests.

Port activities grind to a halt

Licensed customs agents and other port users at the Apapa, Tincan Island, and other ports in Lagos were denied access due to compliance from the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria.

Observations on Tuesday revealed a complete shutdown of all commercial activities at the ports.

The Union had announced its intention to participate in the nationwide strike, citing various grievances and infractions against workers’ rights.

In a statement on Monday, the Head of Media of MWUN, John Ikemefuna, conveyed that the strike directive came from the National Executive Council meeting of the NLC.

The decision was a response to perceived government infractions, including the abduction and assault on NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero, non-payment of salaries and pensions, and the government’s failure to implement agreements.

Affirming their commitment to the nationwide strike as an affiliate of the NLC, Ikemefuna expressed readiness to join the broader labor action.

Reacting to the development, Sikiru Remilekun, the Youth Leader of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents, Tincan Island Chapter, issued a notice instructing members to stay at home until further information is provided.

In a public notice, Remilekun stated, “All terminals are shut down pending the discussion and outcome of the meeting with the federal government. Please, all clearing agents should stay home and listen to news and genuine information if it will still be held or continue tomorrow.”

The Ports and Terminal Multipurpose Limited Chapter Chairman of the National Association of Government Approved, Thomas Alor also confirmed the situation, stating, “There is no activity here, no operations everywhere; they are not working. I have even left the place now heading home.”

Aviation

The aviation industry opted out of the ongoing nationwide strike, citing a lack of preparations as the decisive factor.

Operations at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja continued without disruption, with no reported flight cancellations

The General Secretary of the Air Transport Services Senior Association of Nigeria, Francis Akinjole, in an interview with The PUNCH clarified the sector’s stance, stating, “We will join, but we have not actually sat down to decide on that.

“We have a way of doing our own things. We don’t just embark on a strike without adequate preparation.”

Akinjole highlighted a logistical challenge facing the aviation unions, pointing out that one of their member unions is holding a delegate conference in Benin City starting from Wednesday.

He emphasized the need for a coordinated approach, stating, “We cannot be in Benin and enforce a strike in Lagos. So, we have to meet and decide on how to go about it.”

Acknowledging their alignment with the issues at hand, Akinjole recalled a similar scenario five years ago during the NUATE (National Union of Air Transport Employees) National Delegate Conference in Asaba.

He noted that despite a national strike, aviation unions were engaged in activities in Asaba, highlighting the sector’s commitment to strategic and well-organized decision-making.

Akinjole concluded by assuring that all aviation unions would convene to address the current situation, emphasizing the sector’s seriousness in dealing with pertinent issues.

NUATE, one of the key unions, has already taken its place at the ongoing delegate conference, raising questions about the aviation industry’s unique approach during times of nationwide labor actions

Power sector records partial compliance

Power sector workers participated in the nationwide strike. While the power grid remained operational, reports indicated that only essential electricity workers were permitted to work at power stations.

The acting General Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees, Dominic Igwebuike, confirmed that power sector workers withdrew their services at various power stations, except for essential services. However, essential workers would join the strike if it persists.

Igwebuike’s statement was supported by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, which announced the temporary closure of its offices due to the strike, noting that essential services would remain uninterrupted.

Addressing claims of a blackout and grid shutdown, the Transmission Company of Nigeria emphasized that reports suggesting a national blackout were false and misleading. The company clarified that the nation’s power grid was intact and actively supplying electricity to distribution load centers nationwide.

NUBIFIE in some states join, Lagos opts out

Speaking in an exclusive interview with The PUNCH, the Senior Deputy General Secretary of the National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institution Employees, Mr Aboderin Olusola, said so far there has been compliance of banks, insurance companies and other financial institutions in so many states like Bayelsa, Kano, Osun, Edo, Abuja and others.

He said, “We have about 85 per cent compliance, however, the challenge we as a body is that most of these public sector unions especially Lagos, did not comply.”

According to him, for example in Lagos, banks opened their offices earlier in the day and goods were going about their normal business, local government and hospitals opened, most of the public sector unions did not join the strike, and nobody enforced compliance, though our union would move round to ensure that union members in Lagos would comply and just the strike as long as they are members of the unions.

Potential economic loss

The ongoing nationwide strike could result in a daily economic loss of N25.93bn for the Nigerian economy, as per data sourced from the National Bureau of Statistics.

The NBS had previously calculated the economic cost of a nationwide strike in 2012, providing insights into the potential financial impact.

In a document titled, ‘Economic Cost of the Nationwide Strike Action of 9th January – 16th January 2012: Initial Assessment,’ the NBS offered an initial estimate for an eight-day strike action.

Using projected figures for GDP in the first quarter of 2012 and the first quarters of the last three years (2009-2011) for each covered economic activity, the NBS stated, “The real cost of any socio-economic disturbance is the tragic but avoidable loss of human life, the value of which cannot be accurately computed.

“In this brief, the NBS relies on the gross Domestic Product (or GDP) to estimate the monetary value of economic activity “lost” during the period of the strike. In this regard, it is estimated that the nation lost N207, 408.28m million during the eight-day strike.”

Extrapolating from this data, the potential daily economic loss in the current strike stands at N25.93 billion, underscoring the substantial economic implications of the ongoing labor action.

Did you know anyone who died during covid? What if I told you they would more likely than not, still be alive today if not for Bonzo? He refused to attend COBRA meetings. He also bought fake PPE with a huge markup which remain unused till today.

Pray tell what do you like about this man?
I still wonder why people think Bozo is competent. I thought he was very incompetent even before he became PM and he did not disappoint after he became the PM. I have concluded that if you know how to talk and waffle, people may mistake that for competence. But what do I know?

Got your e-mail! The following is the response to your questions:

Congrats!!!

PwC advisory dabble into a whole lot of things and the various units are carved out based on the nature of the Advisory services they render.

Before now the Advisory unit was just one big family under the name: Performance Improvement (or PI for short) but since it's rebranding the unit has undergone a number of changes and innovation hence the split into various units.

The units I can give for now are: Performance Improvement and Risk management. Though there are other units whose functions vary from Strategy, Forensic audits to Business Recovery services.

In my view the best unit as per the category you have given i.e Assurance units e.g FSI, ENERGY etc would be ENERGY, closely followed by SPA before CIPS. But if your question has to do with the best unit overall, then my answer would be TAX for the following reasons:

a) Work-life balance.
b) Higher pay.
c) Less witch hunters grin grin grin

The range of the after tax salary for the first level Associates (A3s) was what I gave. The gross salary is more than the range I gave. Hence, a first level associate should expect to go home with at least 165k every month.

The truth is that in PwC a bad unit depends greatly on individual perspective. The unit I mentioned (FSIP) is 'bad' in my view for a number of reasons e.g The leadership is not smiling, crazy deadlines, work-life balance for peak periods is non-existent etc but this does not mean that people in that unit are necessarily not progressing despite what they face.

In PwC, HC (Human Capital) is in charge of allocating staff to the various units based on need, expertise and some other criteria. A staff can lobby to be out of a particular unit if he or she has a good reason not to be in that unit. PwC Human Capital are responsive to staff needs.

Given that you have a background in the banking sector, you are most likely to end up in FSIP because you already know the terrain but this is not cast in stone. You can still find yourself in some other unit as well.

I will advice that you let HC know your grouse against the banking sector on time and please give them plausible reasons why you can't go back to the banking sector. If your reasons are okay, then you might just find yourself in some other unit.

Every Staff of PwC is exposed to the training program at various levels of development. Personal trainings via CBTs are readily available to every member of staff and classroom trainings are also done at various times. Training is something no one would lack in PwC.

Like I said before the greatest asset of PwC is their staff and they go to great lengths to ensure that ALL their staff get the very best, top of the shelf, trainings. So your answer is: YES, Advisory staff are properly trained and get to travel too.

Thank you!

Do these still apply a decade on?

For instance, if he earnes 100k, and 40k goes for savings, 30k for loan repayment, 5kbfor tax, 10k for pension, 85k is already gone. Just one deduction can land him at the 12.8k. If he tells us the sector where he works, we may be able to appreciate how wicked the salary is. In this tough economy, 12k salary is absolute wickedness.

Five Tool Agency is looking for freelance help.

I'm looking for a writer who is familiar with SEO tools like Ahrefs and Semrush. I'll have 3-4 articles per month, likely long form, and often sent along with SME interviews to use as a resource in your writing. These articles are all on various topics of SEO (on-page, off-page, technical, black hat vs white hat, etc). They should be written by someone who has clear/obvious personal experience in the arena and who can provide opinions on one tool vs another and why, etc.

Article blueprints (briefs) are pretty thorough with intended audience all laid out, the main keyword each content piece is targeting, the competitor URLs for that term, and full article heading structure. Deadlines are just about always 7 days.

If you're interested, please send an email to taylor@fivetoolagency and briefly outline your SEO tool familiarity, provide one or more SEO writing samples, and name your preferred pay rate.

How much does it pay? Negotiable, starting at 0.15/word

All our leaders' kids carry 2nd passports from either America or Europe, some of them are not even with Nigerian passports they're straight-up foreigners. The biggest fools are the emilokan zombies supporting them to plunder Nigeria, in exchange for crumbs like 100k salary to post garbage online

Even Mc oluomo has his nine kids in America, k-1 too. Shettima just got back from seeing his new baby born on U.S soil, yet fools like Rostikol are on here rooting for the ongoing enlavement of their entire descendants for the next 200 years...such pathetically brainless and worthless fools they make me wanna puke
You nailed it. So gross. We have foreigners managing our country and expect it to be productive!
