Sports › Nigeria Vs Equitorial Guinea (AWC 2010 Final) Ended 4-2 by semid4lyfe(mod): 10:06pm On Nov 11, 2010
Wahala dey but make we nor see am undecided  .Those are the only words I can mutter after watching the Nzalang Nacional of Equitorial Guinea dismiss the Banyana Banyana of South Africa in the 2nd Semi final match of ongoing African Women Championship 2010.

Alright. . .the two countries that will represent Africa at the Women World Cup, Germany 2011 have emerged. They are Nigeria & Equitorial Guinea but there is something that is yet to be decided and that is the African Women Champions for 2010 .

Both were impressive in defeating their semi-final opponents. Nigeria got to the finals by humiliating Cameroun 5-1 while Equitorial Guinea got to this stage by defeating South Africa 3-1.

Nigeria & Equitorial Guinea have only met twice in the history of the AWC. First, in the group stages of the 2006 edition in Warri, Nigeria which the Falcons won 4-2 and in the semi-finals of the 2008 edition in which the Equitorial Guineans inflicted a one nil defeat on the Nigerians.

The Falcons would want to avenge their 2008 defeat in the hands of E. Guineans while E. Guinea would want to repeat their 2008 victory over the Nigerian ladies to show it wasn't a fluke.

Both teams play an attacking brand of football and have got some exceptional players in their fold. The Super Falcons have got the pacy winger - Stella Mbachu, the goal king of this competition - Perpetua Nkwocha,  Helen Ukaonu and the  Didier Drogba "statured" striker - Desire Oparanozie. Nzalang Nacional on the other hand have the exciting & skillful Salimata Sempore, their inspirational captain and Most Valuable Player of 2008 AWC - Genoveva Anonoma , Nigerian born striker - Chinasa Okoro and their recently naturalised former Spain U-19 player- Jade Boho.

There is no doubt the two finalists are the best teams in this years AWC so we'd be treated to some dazzling, exciting and top class football come Sunday @ 1.00 PM Nigerian time (2.00 PM South African Time).

Oya, you all should look into your crystal balls, consult your oracles and lets have your predictions for the game  grin
Sports › Re: Nigeria Vs Cameroun (AWC 2010 Semi-Final) Ended 5 - 1 by semid4lyfe(mod): 8:14pm On Nov 11, 2010
The camerounians obviously didn't come with a game plan to win but with a plan to stop the Falcons from playing by using every dirty trick in the book judging from the way they were hacking down our players. I thought Heitinga's kungfu kick at the world cup final was the height until I saw the two-legged flying kick a camerounian defender gave Oparanozie today. . .that should have been a straight red IMO. Their game plan today left me wondering "whatever happened to play your game, make I play my own?"

Coach Eucharia was spot on with her starting 11 and her substitutions were okay too. I think it was particularly smart of her to bring in Esther Sunday for Ebere Orji who was obviously not in the game cos this opened up the flanks and added pace to our game with Stella Mbachu & Sunday Esther working both sides.

All our goals were classy too. .The 1st goal was an in-swinging looping corner kick taken by Helen Ukaonu which sailed into the net untouched by anyone. . .I wonder why peeps think it was scored by Oparanozie abi dem nor see replay?.

The 2nd goal which is my favourite was sublime too. . .both in planning and execution.  A defence splitting pass was delivered by Nkwocha (I think) to Stella Mbachu who ran up to meet it, looked up momentarily to see where her team mate was and delivered an inch perfect cross to Oparanozie who leapt up and nodded into the net. I love the cross more than the goal itself. . .na wetin dem dey call tailor made, measured, calculated etc be that grin. I told someone who was watching the match with me that no one in the Eagles  crosses as well as Mbachu and nor be lie. Oparanozie's stance in the air as she nodded the ball reminded me of Victor Agali too.

The 3rd goal was a bad goal kick taken by the Camerounian keeper which landed at the feet of Nkwocha who ran into the box and placed the ball to the bottom right of the keepers net.

The 4th goal was a long looping cross which was hit on the volley by Nkwocha and it rolled into bottom right side of the goalie's net.

The 5th goal was a penalty that resulted from a Camerounian player hacking down a rampaging & goal bound Nkwocha in the 18. She picked up herself to take the penalty and tucked into the bottom right side of the goalie's net. . .at this point it was hat trick(her 2nd in this competition) to Perpetua Nkwocha and 10 goals in this AWC.

The goal we conceded was due to the goalkeeper naivety of Precious Dede. Some one needs to talk to that girl & tell her that somethings are not just done in football. One of them is that a goalkeeper shouldn't attempt to hold on to balls like that over a strikers head. . .it should be punched away instead. The goal we conceded was avoidable and the thing vex me die cos it gave the Camerounians confidence.

On a player level, I was particularly impressed by Oparanozie. . .she hussled hard and was a constant thorn in the flesh of the Cameroun defenders. Even petite Glory Iroka was very impressive today. . .as she small reach, the babe dey run things for midfield. Helen Ukaonu was simply marvelous. . .maybe she should be drafted to Super Eagles to play left back grin Rita Chikwelu though a striker in her club has done a wonderful job in her "adopted" defensive midfield position in this competition. In short everybody played well today.

All in all, it was a champagne performance by the Falcons and I dare say this is the first match they've impressed me.

Next up is Equitorial Guinea. . .but anyone who watched their match with S.A go know se wahala dey o. . .that she-man in no 8 jersey, Salimata Simpore na big big problem and Chinasa Okoro (no 15) nor dey look face. Clearly, their win in 2008 was no fluke.

On a final note, I feel sad for S.A cos the main reason they hosted this AWC was to use the home advantage to get to the final and qualify for the world cup and perhaps win the AWC. Make dem nor worry sha, world cup dey in 2015 so dem fit host the AWC in 2014 again. . .LWKMD  grin grin

Nor mind me jare. I'm happy they lost today . . .Nigeria & E.G will represent Africa best at the world cup.

Onigbinde tasks Super Falcons

Former Super Eagles coach Adegboye Onigbinde has added his voice to the growing list of apprehensive Nigerians over Thursday’s semifinal clash between Nigeria’s Super Falcons and the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroun at the 7th Africa Women Championship (AWC) in South Africa.

Onigbinde who commended Falcons for their flawless run in the biennial football show piece told SuperSport.com on Tuesday that it will be too risky for Nigerian campaigners to lower their guard for ambitious Camerounians.

“It will be suicidal for Falcons to underrate the Camerounians, women football has come of age in Africa and every country wants to be winner, so Falcons will be in for shock if they underrate them.

“AWC is football in its totality, Falcons have done very well winning all their matches so far, I advice them to maintain their winning streak, keep to their cool-headedness and see every opponent as foe.”

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) technical committee member expressed confidence in the five-time African champions to qualify for the World Cup as well as re-claim the title they lost to Equatorial Guinea two years ago. “I have not changed nor intend to change nationality, every Nigerian expects them to lift the trophy and that is my sincerest expectation, qualify for the World Cup and win the trophy,” he said.

Nigeria will engaged perennial rivals Cameroun in the second semifinal while host South Africa tackle title holder Equatorial Guinea in an epic duel that will see the finalists qualify to represent Africa at next year’s Fifa Women’s World Cup billed for Germany.

Falcons will get better

Bala Nikya, the Super Falcons' assistant coach said the team will put in a better performance than in their previous matches when they face Cameroun in the semi-final on Thursday.

"I think the team is getting better going by the way the team has been improving with every game", Nikya said in a post-match interview with reporters on Sunday after the Falcons dimmed Tanzania's Twiga Stars 3-0 at the Makhulong Stadium.

He said every member of the team had been improving and that there was no cause for alarm no matter who they meet in the final stages of the competition.

"The players have been improving and I can say the team overall has been doing well, not minding today's performance and result.

http://www.cafonline.com/competition/african-women-championship_2010/news/7118-one-on-one-with-the-cameroon-coach.html

A One on One interview with Cameroun's coach. . . .

Enow Ngachu has been with the Cameroon women team since 2004 and he has risen the ranks from being the assistant coach to the principal coach.
He has attended every single edition of the Africa women championship from 2004 till date and he talks to CAF about his experiences and more.

Question: Coach, please tell us about women football in Cameroon.

Coach: We operate a premier football league back home. The league consists of 8 teams and it is played at the national level. As I speak with you, we have our players spread all over the world and I can count nothing less than 20 Cameroon players playing in Europe, America and Latin America.

Question: How has that rubbed on the development of the Indomitable Lioness?

Coach: We have progressed and we have gained a lot of experience. We have really improved if you compare the Cameroon of today with that of 2004; we have improved in the way we play and now, I think we can rival with any team in the world.

Question: What do you think needs to be done to further raise the standard of the game in Africa?

Answer: I believe strongly that the time has come for CAF to also introduce theCAF champion’s league and the CONFEDERATION’s cup to women club football in Africa. Such tourneys will only help strengthen the women football culture and further boost its popularity and standard.

Question: How do you see the semi-final pairing between your team and Nigeria?

Answer: The match will be just like any other match. We are not under pressure although we have lots of respect for Nigeria. In fact, we all know that when a dog bites a human being, it is not news. It will be news if human being bites a dog. We are used to losing to Nigeria but tomorrow, we will cause an upset. The pressure is not on us, but come tomorrow, Cameroon will be proud of us.

Question: At what level will you see your participation in the competition as being worthwhile?

Answer: Our aim here is to qualify for the world cup. It will be a massive disappointment if we fail in that ambition of ours but it will also serve as a
lesson for us.
Hehehe. . . .I laugh in greek. This joker of a coach actually thinks Cameroun can stand toe to toe with USA, Germany, China, DPR Korea, South Korea, Sweden etc in female football grin grin

More news . . . .

Ukaigwe predicts tough duel for Falcons

President of the female football interest group (FFIG) Henrietta Ukaigwe has call for caution as Super Falcons tackle perennial rivals the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon in the Thursday’s second semifinal of the 7th African Women’s Championship (AWC) in South Africa.

Title holder Equatorial Guinea will face host South Africa the same day.

Cameroon edged out the weeping child of group B Algeria 2-1 to finish second behind title holders Equatorial Guinea who defeated Black Queens of Ghana 3-1; the results ensured both teams booked their passage to the last four of the biennial football event.

Ukaigwe told SuperSport.com on Monday that Cameroon are hungry for the World Cup show piece and will be tough even as she tips Falcons to come out of the encounter unscratched.

“Cameroon know us in and out, it will be tough. They have not been to the World Cup; it has always been Nigeria and Ghana. They are hungry and would want to play in the final that will give them the World Cup ticket.

“Many of their ex-internationals are products of Nigeria’s National Institute for Sports (NIS); some of their players also played in the women football league in Nigeria and the rivalry between Nigeria and Cameroon has been there so expect a tough game.

“However, Nigeria have always had the upper hands, so I still expect Falcons to triumph.”

The seasoned journalist who hailed the first class form of former Caf women footballer of the year Perpetua Nkwocha and coach Eucharia Uche expressed optimism that the five-time African champion will not only pick one of the World Cup tickets but will win the trophy also.

“Perpetua is on fire right now, it is like the older the wiser. She said this AWC will be her last, I think she is withdrawing in a grand style.

“Eucharia is not disappointing too. I gave her chance, she has proved that women can do it and I think she is making ways for other women coaches to come on board.

“Falcons will qualify for the World Cup, I see them also winning the trophy,” she enthused.

The team has been practicing penalties in preparation for that eventuality but hopefully dem go do the job in 90 minutes

Meanwhile, feelers from the Falcons camp (judging by the way they filed out in their last training session) indicates the most likely starting 11 will be

Precious Dede
Helen Ukaonu
Osinachi Ohale
Ulumna Jerome
Onome Ebi
Rita Chikwelu
Amarachi Okoronkwo
Glory Iroka
Stella Mbachu
Desire Oparanozie
Perpetua Nkwocha

I think this is a very strong starting 11 and should be able to hold it's own against the camerounian ladies. . . although I dey fear small. Anyhow sha, Falcons must win tomorrow even if dem nor carry the cup cos we must be at Germany 2011. . .by fire by force  grin

Old habits die hard, old rivalries never do!  undecided

Yeap. . .old rivalries will be rekindled when the Super Falcons of Nigeria confront their Camerounian counterparts, the indomitable lionesses tomorrow in the first semi-final match of the ongoing African Women Championship in South Africa.

To get to this stage, the Super Falcons picked the maximum 9 points in Group A by defeating Mali (5-0), the host - South Africa (2-1) and Tanzania (3-0) while the Indomitable Lionesses qualified second in Group B with 7 points by drawing Equitorial Guinea (2-2) and beating Ghana (2-1) and Algeria (2-1) respectively.

This match is the most important match for both teams as not only a place in the Finals and a chance to win the cup is at stake but also the ticket to represent the continent at the Germany 2011 Women World Cup as the 2 finalists in this competition qualify for the world cup. Coming into this match, the Nigerians have scored 10 goals and conceded just 1 with Perpetua Nkwocha accounting for 7 of the goals while the Camerounians have scored 6 goals and conceded 4.

However, the statistics in this case don't seem to tell the full story as the Nigerians were arguably in the weaker group and have also been less than convincing with the type of play they've churned out while the Lionesses along with Equitorial Guinea have played some of the best football seen in this AWC.

Also, analysts have criticized the Super Falcons for their seeming over-reliance on Perpetua Nkwocha and "individual play" arguing that if she's stifled and marked out, then they'll find it very difficult to score and win games. The Nigerian team has also been likened to a ''hourglass''. . . large at the two ends and thin in the middle, an allusion to their strong defence & attack but weak & almost non existent midfield.

The Camerounians on the other hand play more as a team and rely less on individual flair. Like their male counterparts, they are very physical, brawny, tenacious and workaholic, full of running and have a "never say die" spirit which was exhibited in their matches against Equitorial Guinea and Ghana. . .coming from 2 goals down to force a  2-2 draw and coming from a goal down to beat Ghana 2-1. They are strong in all departments and don't seem to have a weakness.

Nigeria and Cameroun are no strangers to themselves at this level and  it must be stressed that the two played themselves twice in the 2004 edition hosted by the same South Africa. At the group stage, the Lioness showed a lot of guts storming back from 0-2 down to draw 2-2 against Nigeria but the Camerounian team then further surprised  many by displaying their naivety on the big stage, going down 5-0 to the same Falcons on the final day.

A repeat performance was to follow in 2006 and this time it was in the semi-finals and the Nigerian ladies dished out another 5-0 spanking to the Cameroun team. In the 2008 edition, both sides met in the losers final and the Nigerians were only able to win via penalty shout-out indicating the gap between both teams has been narrowed over the years.  The best performance the Lionesses have gotten against the Nigerian ladies is a draw but history may not count for much as both teams square up tomorrow.

The outcome of this match will surely be a difficult one to predict, at least now that octopus Paul is no more  grin

Kick-off is 9.30 AM Nigerian time (10.30 AM South African time) and it'd be on Supersport and SABC. . .lets hope our local stations will show the match now that we're at the knock-out stage but I wouldn't get my hopes too high if I were you  undecided

Sports › Siasia Targets Brazil 2014 Semi-Final Place by semid4lyfe(mod): 12:55am On Nov 09, 2010
Simon Kalika, Samson Siasia's long term right hand man, has said that the new Super Eagles coach has targeted the 2014 World Cup semi-finals.

Siasia was last week named as Nigeria coach, and is expected to be presented to the media on Wednesday and Kalika says work must start in earnest, to achieve the team's long term goals.

"He has in his mind that the Eagles must surpass what they have achieved so far," Kalika said.

"In his mind Nigeria must play in the final of the 2012 Africa Nations Cup and must play in the semi-final of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil."

Kalika admits that while these objectives may appear tough, they are achievable.

"This may look like a tall order or ambition but it is achievable. Everything is a matter of good and long planning. We need to start the job now and work on the likely players that can give us the result as well as make discoveries too.

"There are talents in the Nigerian local league but we only need time to work on them to become some of the best players around."

And the Dutchman is convinced that Siasia can deliver success.

"Firstly if I don’t believe in him to succeed in anything he does I wouldn’t have been always there to help him. I believe he would do wonders with the Super Eagles. He just needs a conducive environment to work and the full support of the Football Federation and Nigerians too.

"He wants to bring back the attacking football style of the Super Eagles of the past. He wants to change the playing pattern of the Eagles now. He wants to bring back the attacking instincts of the Eagles. He believes that when a team attack and attack the team would definitely sore goals and scoring goals is the only way a team can continue to win games."

NFF hands off Siasia

Nigeria's success or failure under Samson Siasia's watch would be entirely the responsibility of the former international, according to the NFF.

Technical Committee chairman Christopher Green told KickOffNigeria.com that Siasia has been told that he although there will be monitoring, he will have full, unfettered powers over his team.

"We shall monitor the activities of our staff, our players and all that we have but that does not mean that we are going to interfere with his job. We are not going to interfere," Green told KickOffNigeria.com.

“We are going to give the coach a free hand and we have started by asking him to get his back room staff. That is free enough but that does not mean that we shall not monitor. We have a monitoring team of the Technical Committee.

“But he is at liberty because the truth of the matter is that we have told him and he has agreed that the successes and the failures of the team are his sole responsibility. He has accepted them so we should go to sleep. It is as good as that," Green disclosed.

Green, who was head of the committee that selected Siasia ahead of Keshi, said he had no regrets.

“Well I don’t think I have any reason to blame myself or we have any reason for blaming ourselves tomorrow for picking Siasia.

"We were faced with two very good coaches, two coaches we considered about the best in the country and it could have gone to any of them, but it favoured Siasia. So I don’t have any regrets and we are not going to have any regrets tomorrow."

efoghorjos: I observe that our current Super Falcons team is made up of over 90% Igbos (From the coaching crew to players). I have never seen a time where our national team has been so composed of one ethnic group.

Just being curious anyway. Do you think it has got anything to do with the coaching crew or what?
To answer your question, NO. . .it has nothing to do with the coaching crew. The Falcons have always been dominated by Igbo's even when James Peter (South-South), Ismaila Mabo (a Notherner) and Nterio Effiom (from either Cross Rivers or Akwa-Ibom state) were in the saddle

I suggest you to take a stroll to the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos (in the South-west. . .I never mention the South-East &  South-South o) or any football training ground/field in Nigeria where you reside on a Saturday to see the "aspiring" female footballers who come out to  train & play and then come back and tell me how many non Igbos and non Niger Deltans you see.

Only then will you begin to understand why the Igbo's dominate our Female National teams at all levels and will continue to dominate for a long time to come.(U-17, U-20 & the Falcons)

@original poster,
not only with our national female team, but there is still an igbo girl in the eq. guinea female team by the name Chinasa okoro and she is make waves there too. as i write, she has scored in this there game against ghana so it cut across africa.
She is just one of the five Nigerians in the team. She has actually being playing for Equitorial Guinea since 2006.

She scored the first of their 2 goals in their 2-4 loss to us when we met in the group stage of the 2006 AWC in Warri, Nigeria.

Only 2 of their Nigerian players have played in this competition so far. The others are yet to take to the field.

Meanwhile, that Equitorial Guinea team dey worry o. . .especially that their Number 8 that looks like a man. I dare say they're the best team in this competition. I'm actually happy we're meeting Cameroun instead of them in the Semi-final.

nigeria has refused to move forward because the igbos are not allowed into the right places. okonjo iweal and soloudo were close to doing great things but obasanjo politically killed that all.
Very dumb and silly!

There is a role for Mikel in Our Midfield but not as the offensive player

Mikel can be our deep lying playmaker in a 2 man defensive midfield. Football has gotten too fast for one defensive midfielder.

Mikel should stop trying to be Okocha's replacement as he will never be. We should start looking at Mikel as a Xabi Alonso or our own Sunday Oliseh.

Nigeria needs to discover a new offesive midfielder.
Exactly my point but wait until someone like 12large who believes a team should always play 4-4-2 and playing 2 DM's is a "taboo" gets in here and starts yapping rubbish grin

I sort of agree with Siasia. . .Chelsea has blunted the little attacking/offensive instincts he had and turned him into a more defensive minded player hence is present playing style.

Let me add that Mikel was never really an enterprising offensive midfielder, as even in 2005, there were obvious deficiencies in his game. Personally, I think Mikel is a misfit of some sort cos he can't play as a 10 and he lacks the strength, steel, work ethic, marking ability and solidity to play as a Defensive Midfielder.

However, I think Mikel is still relevant in the scheme of things for the Eagles cos he brings much more to the team than he takes from it. . .with his ball holding & shielding abilities, passing etc. . .hasn't anyone noticed that when Mikel starts a game & is substituted (for both Chelsea & Nigeria), the midfield collapses totally? hence, I'll advise Siasia to play a Mikel as a deep lying midfielder (just like Pirlo of AC Milan) in between a 10 with an adventurist spirit, pace, goal threat & scoring ability and a no-nonsense and workaholic DM.

Mikel has gone too far down the road of a DM that he can't adapt to playing as a 10 anymore. Playing Mikel as the stand alone/sole DM or 10 in the Super Eagles will not augur well for the team.

Although Mikel may have started out as an offensive midfielder, he's long forgotten how to play as one and has found his comfort zone playing as a DM for Chelsea.  Hell, the Kid man has even said it many times that he preffers playing as a DM now.

Siasia should keep in mind that an old dog cannot be taught new tricks cos it's too stuck in its ways and old habits die hard. He should play to Mikel's strength and thats by using him as a deep lying midfielder cos of his exceptional ball holding and passing abilities.
