@semitunde

The image below shows the level of the house which is still standing about 13.5 coaches tall. The inside is the same level with the outside. The boy in blue is about 5f 11" tall, this gives you the more ideas about the height. At this point, the very first picture I posted on this thread (the raft) is completely disappeared but the house haven't sink for about a year now. The roof was done in February and I've observed the house haven't sink at all (This picture is less then 2 weeks old). My worries is; if I go ahead and cover the floors with marble and part of the wall too, will it sink? if so how much?

I'm waiting for the dry season to do the drainage.

Thanks.
Its a bungalow? I thought it was more than a storey.

OK. I'll advise you to do all works on stabilizing the building before adding more weight. My concern is when you pack in. For a bungalow to sink on raft, its a really poor soil.

Floor tiles would spread its weight evenly around the house so it may not affect the sinking much. Its when you have furniture and other utilities in the house that can cause differential settlement. Don't wait till dry season if you have the money now. As much as you can do to protect the building should be done asap. The building may look settled now, but you don't know what will happen with added weight of people and appliances.

Wait till the dry season to do you tiling. But do your drains, both inside and outside now while its still raining. I cannot say how much it can sink if it does.

The place looks dry and OK in the pix but then again, I don't know how the soil will react under rainy conditions. Ikorodu mostly has good soil profile so I'm quite surprised this is affecting a bungalow. I hope its not a landfill area/ former refuse dump.

Did you do the ground floor slab before it sank? Or the floor you have now is the only slab?

Filling the surrounding of the building is neither good nor bad. If you fill with sharp sand , it might drain well ( if you're not close to the water table); but it might also chanell the drained water towards your foundation and hence increase your problems. Pave the compound and channel to a drain to avoid this.

Sorry my thoughts are jumbled. I'm a little occupied here. Hope you sha got the gist. Others here can have other/ better suggestions too.

Modified...

I can see the storey at the back. Pls stick to the bolded above. What do you mean by the level inside is the same as outside? The natural ground level outside us same as inside? Hope this doesn't affect your plumbing works. If no, then the only thing might be dealing with wet walls.

Had brabus added just two coaches of blocks on the raft before DPC, I will never have no problem. I'm not an engineer so I trusted him to do his job which he failed. If I was him, I would have constructed set of concrete piles before the raft. He observed the neighborhood and the houses there before the construction, yet failed to come up with better ideas. Clients worked very hard for their money. It's not just fair when builders makes this kind of silly mistakes.

I'm just trying to find a solution at this point because finger pointing won't solved nothing.

The house have stop sinking but I'm still afraid. This is not lekki and the houses in front of me was built maybe 10 years ago and it has no problem except for the fence the owner had to do 3 times. The bungalow next to me is pretty bad though. The owner just don't care much about it.

I will continue to seek a better way to get the water out. What so funny was that it stays only on the left side of the fence only. And I've spent a lot to do my best which seems not just enough for now.
I'm waiting for the dry season to do a massive drainage which me luck!
This is rather unfortunate.

I remember the initial thread and the suggested solutions to the problems then...

My take is:

1. Pls you can still do some of what brabus suggested I.e. construct a V-drain on the side the water is coming from( outside the wall) and drain away.

2. I would disagree with brabus on planting within the area though. I think its better to pave or use interlocking in the compound. Slope it gently in the same direction as the natural flow of water there and provide a drain along the wall, withing the compound where the water can collect. Drain it out from there. Keeping your compound and hence foundation area as dry as possible means disallowing the soaking of water withing the compound. Run it all off.

3. Pls where is the site located? Just the area or state. Piling, which should have been the best option could have been revealed with proper soil test. But information about the general area and other building foundations there could have formed the decision of the contractor/ structural ENGR in deciding on raft ( and the type of raft used).

4. Sad as this might be, adding 2 or 3 courses to the block wall above the raft will ameliorate the situation. Its not guaranteed to solve the problem. If the bearing capacity of the soil underneath the building is low and probably below the water table; the building will sink more with added weight. Though the weight from tiling shouldn't really be the big deal here, so you can tile. You best bet is constructing those drains.

5. Use electric wired fence to keep the pests out.

I have a site in Ogun state like this too, inclined and just by the main stream. Only difference is there's isn't runoff and the soil there is well compacted at a particular depth. I went for that depth.

Little things differentiate the really good ones from the crowd. For instance, I know it can be difficult using metal formwork if your columns are wobbly and need to be kicked into position every time. Nice work there too.

Apart from the requirements for quality, doing the job well speaks of the person in charge. Good day Sir/Madam. In response to your question, our Seamless Waterproof Polymer concrete flooring, doesn't require any underlay/damp proof membrane/polythene sheet. Our concrete flooring addresses the capillary action challenges most interlocking face. It also allows for soil stabilization, hence preventing earth movement. You should try it out!
OK. I'm impressed.

So this actually knocks out the necessity and hence cost for soil stabilization even in a high water table location like lekki? Cool

But it does need for you to use (sharp) sand to level the ground surface before applying the product am I right?

Finally the prices you gave here, do they include for fixing on site?

For those of you still getting confused about all this... Use real life examples!

For instance, let's consider: 6-1+2

The wrong answer would be 6-3=3

The correct answer would be 6-(1-2)= 6-(-1)=7.

Let say Mike has 6 oranges he brought to a table, Ben took 1 orange and Brian added 2 oranges. How many will finally be on the table? Ofcourse 7!

The only way the other analogy can work is if we say: Mike brought 6 oranges to a table, Ben took 1 orange and Brian brought 2 oranges and gave to Ben.

But then with the above, we will be left with 4 oranges on the table as against 3 that was in the wrong calculation! Meaning the calculation that resulted in having 3 oranges, however you look at it, is wrong.
Education › Re: Many Persons Will Fail This Maths (photo) by semitunde:
19naia:
If the equation were such that it compressed to be 6-1+1 ?
I could say that i have (6-1)+1 or 6-(1+1).
The first would be the same as saying i have six oranges and then i subtract one to have five and then i add one to bring me back to six.

The other phrasing or interpretation could go as having six oranges and then subtracting a number of them equal to the value of one plus one which is equal to two. That would leave me with 4 oranges.

In the case where you had subtraction of zero oranges, it was more straight forward to your point of being 7 as the answer.

But when you consider in a dialectic way and open minded consideration, you will see the same straight forward interpretation is not the same in all cases. I respect your respect for syntax, but there is the matter of semantics that makes variable interpretations defy a standard one rule fits all... Bodmas has been about arbitrating what is truly an amorphous thing ( math ).

And Yes there is a reason why subtraction is listed after addition in the order of Bodmas and it makes a differnce
Look at 6-0+1. When i have followed bodmas all the way down to the final step of addition and subtraction, there is a final rule to consider to simplify the confusion that can happen such as the parradox i explained above with 6-1+1..
The rule that helps arbitrate the two different ways of approaching 6-1+1, also simplifies the approach to the answer of 7 in the case of 6-0+1.
That rule is: when you have a final line up of numbers to be added and subtracted for a final total, Move all the subtraction properties and their values to the rear of the lineup and let the additive properties and their values stay in the front of the line up.
Such as rephrasing 6-0+1 as 6+1-0.. That will settle the matter as 7 and explain why itwas a better idea to put subtraction as the last in the order of process called BODMAS

In the case of 6-1+1, it is more abitrary, could go either way depending on interpretation and so the rule used for Bodmas will determine if we take 6 oranges and subtract a value equal to one and one oranges to have four remain, or if we take six oranges and subtract one orange and then add one back to remain with 6.
Bodmas will tell us to move the subtraction to the very last place and then we have 6+1-1=6. Rephrasing to have the suntractin be last in the lineup

This is my explanation about dialectics revealing the nature of pure math and why we are taught math with rules and formulas that arbitrate math's tendency to go many different directions to find varied results.
The truth of math is dialectic and as malleable as languages and their many dialects and interpretations. Only imperfect or arbitrary rules, formulas and standards help arbitrate math so that we dont all run around with a thousand differnet languages and confusion, or should i say a thousand different answers to the same equations.

I really love open mindedness in the face of pure math which invloves simple arithmetic equations as well as quantum theory conundrums.
Open minds will denifinitley guide me out of the small box of a stagnant job labouring away at someone else's individual profit making, rules and ways of seeing the world.
The truth is that even schools in USA are changing the way math is done in primary school ,and the old university graduates are furious because they dont find it easy to do and they feel cheated.. But thats what happens when people think that life is one concrete standard, method, formula or interpretation.
Even wikipedia will have to regulary update itself over time as more is revealed in the world and all subjects and matters at hand evolve in human understanding.
We will never reach the evolution by staying stuck in a box just to qualify for a job or justify a rigid way of thinking and living.. Open the mind and discover beyond what has been conditioned within by those who came before. Thats how life will become better and understanding expand.

I am trying myself, not easy to make sense of so much confusion.
Your explanation is on point and I like it, but you know what? Strictly using the bodmas also gives you the same answer of 7. The trick there is to know how to use the bracket

You have ; 6-0+1 right? Bodmas says addition before subtraction so you should convert it thus:
6-(0-1)= 6-(-1)= 7.

This can also work.with the 6-1+1 that you termed arbitrary.
Its 6-(1-1)= 6-(0)= 6.

The trick is to know how to use the bracket when needed.
QED.

Chances are that we may not even be in a position to identify some "intelligences" due to our limited perceptions.
Here on earth, we have microorganisms that live in volcanic lava, in a carbon environment, i.e. Archae bacteria.
A silicon based life, for instance, should not come as a surprise.
You know I always wondered, when scientists discovered microbes on particles of asteroid rocks, I thought if these could survive the extreme heat and cold of space and probably for millions of years; lord knows what's out there.

An ancient "compass" book said a thousand years will be like a day. That makes sense in so many ways, not excluding compressing the fabric of space to shorting time as dollyak said, but also lasting millions of years such that a thousand years is actually a blink.

Have you tried to imagine the world of an ant? In its locality, it is bound by what it sees and encounters. Most of the things around it, it cannot comprehend, at least not like us. If its in a sitting room, it won't know that. It won't also know that the sitting room is part of a house, that is part of a building, that is part of a street, and state, country, world, etc it doesn't even have a clue how limited in knowledge it is. Even as the ant moves about it is not totally aware of the significance and real use of its environment. It just does its thing, make food, make babies, defend itself.

Do you know there's a new theory that suggests that there is another universe, in fact several universes. With each having same composition, in time and space as we have in our universe? What that means is that you can have several "you"s in those other places occurring at the same time, but probably facing different encounters. That the interconnection of your minds, even if briefly is what comes out in dreams, visions, reincarnation, or an event occurring twice.

In the larger scheme of things, we are mere ants. For so much as we know, we are about to still discover that we know nothing.

Dont you think it possible that life can exist without being carbon based? I personally think that expecting life to be earth like is a serious limitation.

We can't find carbon based life forms in places where it is not conducive but perhaps there is life in some other form? Perhaps we may not even know it when we find it.

1. We just don't have enough vital information apart from its orbit, size and location in the milky way.

2. "Entirely possible" none are inhabited?!
But Hmm, in reality, that could be as unlikely as rolling an unloaded pair dice and having it come up sixes, one billion times in a row!

But the number is contingent upon what fraction of such worlds give rise to life... If the conditions match the Earth's, what are the odds that life arises or rarely arises?

Yet, even if it is rare; let's say it only happens once in a million worlds... Given the billions of planets, the odds are quite good, there are many inhabited worlds! After all, a billion is a thousand million!

Plus, if it only happens once every million years, given the billions of years those planets are old--and that there are billions of them--the galaxy must be teeming with life! I hope grin.

3 Jules bianchi was a talented formula one driver who died last week.
I don't know why everyone is looking for all the ingredients of life as we know it on other planets.

Who says black is actually black? Because we named it so? Or that we agree that this will be its name?

Any planet can have any form of "life". Maybe not our type but it will exist, I'm sure of that. There can be other forms of life, human like sef, that can only exist and survive in another type of environment different from what humans can. Made up of amino compounds different from ours; breathing in different gas as available to them; or not even breathing at all!

There's a new theory on what's called ghost particles. Some say it may be made of neutrons. What this means is that, unlike electron in atoms that repel each other, thus making solid object not merge or morph into each other; ghost particles may be made of neutrons. Hence any matter composed of such particles can, say, walk through walls.

My point is, anything is possible. New evidences show that everyday. I won't be surprised if we are variants of another planet's specie, brought here to flourish, with our genome modified to simply suit earth's conditions.

We should not be looking for earth-like planets, we should simply be looking for "life" in all planets.

you said Igbo call other names ...hmmmm thats a new one ..who said lagoon ..even amongst the Yoruba ijebus are detested don't argue this cos I am living in Lagos and I know how they see ilorin people as sell out and how they call the interior people of Forest

bro in terms of investment are you the ones that build industry in Igbo lands or don't you think Igbo millionaires which are many will plough back their profit home cos I know Igbo believe in akure ruo uno principle

left for me I won't even want foreign investors that will repatriate their fund back home ....I will want Igbo investors that will invest and kepp the money in the region ...its not every country will beg for foreign investors ...ask Russians and Caspian Sea dudes in Balkans

so let them decide and if God says the Igbo will have their Biafra so be it

I am not crazy about Biafra or Nigeria mind you
Igbo calling others names is new to you? Lol. Now that's a first! Check threads on naira land and you will see lots of it. Now I've not said others don't call igbos names too, but then others aren't the one calling for independence and as such, not the ones being discussed here. Others also have allies which Igbo apparently don't have partly due to their belligerent nature.

You say yorubas detest ijebus. I laugh I ijebu. No Yoruba group "detests" another. Never. Families can have their preferences but never a group detesting another. You know nothing about that and should stick to things you know. I can tell you all you want about this cos its my tribe not yours. If we decide to discuss the ngwa people or the mbaise, you can be the authority.

You want us to come and invest in the east? Why? Why would we come over to a place where we don't feel wanted? You think that's how business works? You think you will have many of your people in Yoruba land if we were hostile? E.g. you wake up and your shop.is burnt and people are non chalant? I dare say there's nothing in the east now, to attract a Yoruba person there. Most of what we want is right here. You guys have the opportunity to change that, but not by boasting or abusing others. If your convince us well enough now, and you make more friends than enemies with your mouth and conduct; then you can have those friends even fight for and with you for what you want, cos they would now empathise with your cause.

You say you want your business people investing at home. That's what we want too, its part of my explanation. Your being able to to tell your western domiciled guys to come home would be a step in getting Biafra ( whether you want it or not). The folly in you not wanting foreign help in terms of investment would be revealed only when you get your country.

Finally why aren't you a fan of Biafra? If you aren't a fan of Nigeria as well, tell me, if you want to get a juicy contract tied to developing the country and your allegiance to the country is assessed, would it be fair to get that contract with your present thinking?

Maybe you don't know the damage not having a common purpose does to a group. It means you can do stuff, even take advantage of a system or an environment to gain selfish advantage, financially or otherwise, to the detriment of the group. Because you don't care about the group, only yourself. Does this statement sound familiar?

I won't go into a back and forth, so let's just let this rest. I'm sure you won't agree with most if not all of my thoughts, else we won't be where we are today as a country; so let's maintain our side of the fence ok? wink

Like people have suggested, test your Biafra from today. You call other tribes names, while you accuse them of marginalisation. Why don't you have a change of attitude and see where that takes you?

Hold your Governors and other politicians accountable, cos really they won't seize to be biafrans if you get your country. They will even have a head start with enough money to throw around. With your new country needing investments in critical sectors for growth, you may lean on those guys more. So hold them accountable now! Make Biafra work now. Make biafra enticing to even non Igbo to come and stay and invest in. Make igbos living outside Biafra have the will to come home with joy!

The disturbing thing for non Igbos is not your call for Biafra, (apart from the inciting words, which is rather stupid) its the absolute planlessness, associated with it. The fact that only strife or war or both will be the end of that country, if it ever exists.

Those you will never allow, what if they never allow you too. You know they'll be biafrans too with equal rights as you. They will have families and friends who support them. They may even have more money to throw around more than you guys. If they were politician in Nigeria, they will tell you they are the ones with experience; what will you do to stop this?

You peace goes down the toilet as you wrestle an Igbo man that has as much, or even more strong head, as yours.

I have a better question for you, do you think a call for second Niger bridge, or multiple Niger bridges, Onitsha port, Tinapa and other free trade zones, Ibaka deap sea port, and Niger delta sea walls would be ignored in a Biafra?

I use this as a case study: https://www.nairaland.com/979128/enugu-pride-east/405#36076936

Something as sweeping as a Biafra revolution would get rid of the crab in a barrel mentality and get rid of 'Nigerian' leaders. There's nothing to prove, the world saw what happened the last time Biafra existed and was ganged up on by the whole world. The fact that resources aren't being sent to Jigawa and we don't have governors answering to Boko Haram sponsors helps.

The cry for Biafra has more to do with the gang up against GEJ, something that is rooted in Nigeria's long history of prejudice against the east, more than the fact GEJ lost. GEJ was not perfect, but there was definitely a conspiracy against him just because he is eastern. If Buhari had won, just like Obasanjo, just like Yar'Adua, in a different circumstance, as in, not consistently threatening Nigeria's peace if he didn't win, then there wouldn't be such a 'cry'.

Greece got into their problems because of over doing and their people didn't respond with tax. A Biafra has enough human and natural resources to buy Greece, in fact with all the proposed states as it is the GDP is already a third of Greece and that's in this terrible climate. Greece can be used as a great case study though.
But Gej ran in the election before this one, and won convincingly as president.

He was supported by non Easterners/ SS to become president against the will of a few, and he was again backed by same non Igbo/SS for the president 2-yrs later.

What do you think changed? He's tribe?

Wow! This is awesome! cheesy

You have been talking about fire
Will you standd here and watch me burn?
Or rescue me from this recent desire?
I still remain the one and only Sun. smiley
Lol. I'm not a poet jare. But I can quickly put words together... I can also understand even complex ones, but its not my calling.

Firestar, good come back. I'll take the wisdom in it.

I'm glad this is ending swimmingly smiley.

I also saw all this from the start and didn't want to get in...; we are all different. Being happy to see a fight fester is only a fleeting emotion. If the person isn't happy, seeing other people fight won't change that...

For anyone that still has something to say, pls keep it, till next time; or better still, let it go.
