Op! A four storey building with a sound foundation about 20 years old now, recently had a problem with the drainage system. Each time it rained it gets flooded (water will fill the whole compound) am curious if the flooding will have any negative effect on the foundation.
Bro how do you know its a sound foundation? Besides a good foundation will not necessarily remain like that for ever.

Are you trying to stop the flooding or you have realised you can't and just want to save your building. Sorry utw best to know what a client really wants before proffering solutions.

Just helping the op here though.

I cannot precisely hold brief for the original poster, however, raft foundations (beam-raft in the poster's instance, i presume) are generally used where poor cohesive/organic soils are encountered, loads from superstructure are not too heavy and settlement (consolidation and creep) are to be controlled. The 750mm firstly, i guess, should be the depth of the raft's ground beam. Secondly, the increase in depth away from 750mm, definitely, is not as a result of the in-ability of a 750mm deep beam to resist bending and shear stresses as a result of loads from the raft but should be as a result of the ground water conditions, which the engineer (op) anticipates would rise above its present condition.
OK. I'm actually a Civil ENGR and I only want to spur a discussion by asking those questions.

Now. If the depth was increased to take care of the flooding? Why can't the client alternatively sand fill the area by a height such as is enough to take care of the flood with a 750mm raft? That is why I asked that he take us through the process he used in getting and insisting on the >750mm raft.

Another question. The op said coarse aggregate (granite) should not be of uniform size. Why is this?

opalu:
There is a vital aspect of using inadequate foundation. The determination of the type of foundation a building requires is done by the Structural designs matched with the Soil Investigation/tests. The Structural Engineer through his Analysis estimates the entire loads that is coming on the foundation at various points. Where the foundation required is raft, he determines the depth that will be both SAFE and COST EFFECTIVE. But in a conflict between safety and Cost, the safety takes precedence or else the architect is called in to redesign the building to make it smaller/lighter.
Last year, I did an entire structural designs for an estate at Elegushi in lekki. And the Owner insisted I reduce the raft to 750mm depth. But based on my designs, 750 depth will fail. So I didn't. By the time they the foundations were done to my standard, as soon as the ground floor slabs were completed, heavy rain fell and the ground floor of many estates around the site were submerged, all the ground floor of all his own estate were not flooded.
That was when he knew I did a good job for him.
Apart from flooding, the ability of the foundation to carry the dead and imposed loads for at least 100 years is what is critical.
You didn't state your own design depth and the no of storeys of the building or type of building. This would have helped more in forming a discussion.

Why didn't you reduce to 750mm as the client wanted? Is it because the building cannot be designed with such depth? Or because you need the building to be above the flood level as you say?

What parameters did you use to design the foundation to take care of the flood? Can you take us through the process?

Thanks

As for Ethical hacking, it is actually the bomb, and you don't need to use it to hack others, you just learn how to access a lot of e-stuffs through the back door without stress.
I had a 'Toaster' who went to China to learn the real thing, he got back and started a coy in Lere and I learned a few stuffs from him but then he wanted to also teach me how to install deekoCAD but I ran and the lessons ended there.

So, once I overcome this laziness I will start a solid Certification in line with my current interest. I have done two already but then there are many more to do and I need to get serious to stay in the Tech loop.

Awayu?
I'm good. Only interested in learning what would bring in money o. Lol

Rubbish post, so sudan confiscated properties owned by southern sudan? Cech rep claimed properties owned by slovakia? There is a international law guiding all these. The abandoned properties you talked about is because we are all in the same country (the reason international community didn't wade into it)
Rubbish reply.

What fact do you have that those people had their properties returned? Especially Sudan? Well if that's how you want to go about it, then I wish for Biafra all what South Sudan wished for..and got.

Read the questions I asked very well o. Its pseudonym for what happens after your war.

You have already come back for the stove!

Have you gone back for the abandoned properties in the south south and North, whether peacefully or violently? What happened when you tried?

Doesn't that tell you that the ones you got back in the southwest were actually because you were allowed to take it? And that you were allowed to take it most probably because you are still part of the country Nigeria?

You came to stay in my house and bought a stove. After some time we had a quarrel and you packed out. If I don't give the stove to you or throw it out, can you come over and claim it after you've packed out? What if I burned it? What if I didn't and said I did? How will you know? Will you be allowed entry to find out?

Let's say you sell that stove to me and I agree, if I don't pay what will you do?

You give examples of other countries like you don't have better examples here of "abandoned properties"

Better wake up.

Hi everyone smiley
Ethical hacker ey?

Got a text that I'd been invited to take advantage of free training at New Horizon. We were told to come with updated cv to help guide with the courses we might need.

Shaperly I drove there, all the while thinking what was in it for them. I def wanted to learn some new software, ones I should have known before now.

Got there and realised they didn't have courses for what I want. The best they could offer me was PMP, something I passed in 2010. No engineering software except AutoCAD that I know how to use. The lady there just told me they would look into the softwares I want. STAAADPRO, ORION etc....or I could be an Ethical Hacker!! cheesy

undecided

Why would I want to hack others.

Anyway, I think I wrote your nos., when they asked me to invite someone. Maybe you got the invite from there grin

Eph.6.1-3 kjv: Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promisewink That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

Eph. 6:4 KJV: And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

My dad loved thus part of the Bible. If allowed he'd use it as morning devotion till eternity. This and the other one in proverbs that says "my son, harken to my words...". But he loved the Ephesians one more.

He'd read verse 1-3 and stop, then begins the sermon. We the children would be like undecided undecided undecided

He was mostly blind to verse 4 until we point it out. "Parents, don't provoke your children to wrath".

He'd say "if you obey us, there won't be any need to be angry at you". And while that is true, who determine the case where the parent wrongfully provokes anger? What if the reason behind their annoyance is untrue?

The Bible therefore, as someone looking, gives balance in its advice. It gives to the goose just as to the gander.

But each side is quite blind to the other's advice. We the children see the case where the parents provoke us to anger, while the parents see the case where the children don't obey them.

Both sides in their hearts know their predilections aren't entirely true for all situations though, but they hold on to their thoughts just the same.

As it is in parents vs children, so it is in husband ( batterer) vs wife (sharp mouth); so it is in rapist vs victim. Its a cycle of cause and effect. One's action affects the other and it goes on like that.

Do what the Bible has done, as someone looking in, give advise to the two. Cut the cycle.

Especially for rāpe cases, while we do our best to put perpetrators in the slammer, we also do our best to protect potential victims or advise them to protect themselves. Balance.
