Research Interest? How can that be key when it is not everyone that is going for research based( thesis Masters)? Some are going for course works( Non-thesis based Masters) and of course MBA.

Infact, research is mostly key when you are talking about PhD. You will noticed that VOs mostly ask questions on dissertation or research interest when you are going for a PhD. Check the PhD transcripts approval well. I am also going for a PhD and the first question I was asked is about my research and professor and the second I was asked is course alignment ( what is your Bachelors degree)? That's all.Infact, you may not have a supervisor or a permanent research interest( you can change based on supervisor) even as a PhD student until you touch base cos you may be offered a TA based on course works and TOEFL scores.

However, I would say all these course alignment and research interest is soft now because the embassy in Nigeria is more concerned about funding. The situation is also very unpredictable now in Abuja because you can see candidates with huge deficit getting approved. So, I would say for now it is difficult to be narrow it down! However, the Lagos Embassy is quite predictable with mostly funded guys approved ( I saw a transcript that someone was approved yesterday with no course alignment but VO just approved based on the fact that he/she may not drop out because he/she is fully funded).

Normally: this is the formula. Your UG course should align with your intended Masters/PhD program. If there is a career change your intended program should relate with your new career. However, we are still in the period where funding is more significant. We were once in the period where GRE was key whether you get 300 or 340 just write the GRE.

While I agree with you on the likely change in the VO's questions to the applicants, I still strong believe that course alignment should never be a yardstick to Visa approval.

Not everyone would do a research but that could be replaced with a career progress. I can really see that this issue of course alignment is a Nig thing and that so sad. People change career and even research interest that is off their UG. In that same Lagos, people with good financial background were rejected.

My advise to this people is if you want to go for MBA pls go for it. Tell the VO why u have interest in it. If u look out for Idris Bello on the web, he did electrical UG first class and now an Afropreneur with MBA also from US. So please don't let anyone limit you.

All the best.

Look at your degrees can’t you see it aligns with one another at all ? Why don’t you go for that Forestry grin(Agriculture Science ) now for your PhD degree then since you had URP in your first degree & CVE in your Second Degree. Ask yourself that question at first. Can you see that both your degrees fall under Engineering. & Environmental Sciences?

Check past transcripts and tell me how many that went to the embassy without have an aligned degree with what they studied in their UG or PG studies. Have you yourself see someone who studied chemistry talking Mathematics to the embassy? This is about morality and how well you’re informed.

However, It is better to take a wise counsel than to give a vague response or guess if you don’t have an idea about how it works. What most people are goofed about is that schools in USA can offer someone who had his UG degree in chemical Engineering an admit to come and study in Agricultural Science.

Finally, Sample many approval Transcripts here and look at both their 1st degree & 2nd degree is there is no alignment at all. This is one of the mistake many of you runs into as I do warn my students about this a lot every time.

Who told you course alignment has nothing to do with VISA Approval? Where did you listened/read about to that ? Chief get it right , admission requirements is TOTALLY different from Embassy requirements okay !

Thank you and take care!

To correct you. On the outside you view it like Civil relates to URP and I'm telling you a No as far as Nig is concern, this is my domain. While I agree with you that visa and admission are diff games, I will like you to know that Interest has a lot to play in the two. For Example, I applied but urban planning schools that was my under grad but was rejected bec currently only few in that school handles advance GIS as I have proposed to work on.

As far as forestry admission is concern I reserve my comment on why I made my choice. But let me hint you, the research interest of d advisor aligned with mine and no 1 get admitted to that dept except a professor got a grant to fund him for the whole study duration. This prof advertised and I applied as I was sure other candidates too must have applied (bec he wrote on his twitter page that he has received 00's email) and he selected me after two interviews. Not to blow my trumpet I need to let u know I got Australia scholarship in Environmental sci and another in canada Geography all because of research interest.

In conclusion research interest is number 1 in respective of visa or admission application. When I processed my US visa the VO only asked me a question "what is ur study plan?" before completing he already approved my visa with good comments from him. URP to Civil is not a possible transition in Nig. So you should know US isnt my first country.

Thanks

You can apply to schools in USA as they offer funding , have good reputation & also Destination for most international students.

My advice is that Make sure you apply to what you actually read in your UG degree. You can easily change to what you actually yearn or aspired for when you touch the base but make sure you get it all right from the course down to other needed admit & funding requirements.

Let there be a course alignment all for the embassy sake and also there is glut of funding in chemical Engineering than MBA.

Success ahead!

Sorry No,Course alignment has nothing to do with admission and visa. I studied urban planning in undergrad, civil engineering in masters and now going for PhD in geography. As a matter of fact I got offer in Forestry department in MTU. What matter most is ur interest, work domain or research experience.

To date, I don't know much areas in civil but my research interest in GIS took me there. So research interest and career path is the main thing.

1 Full funding and a number of tuition waivers. My mistake was, I applied mostly to PhD programs when I should have faced master's first. That was a bummer.

What did you get funding for Msc oPhD?

I feel it would help the guy. But I would advise that the guy asking question should take IELTS or anyone plus GRE considering his grade to boost his funding chance.

If you would want to continue with the Actuarial science/Mathematics line, you need to take some professional exams, at least, Exam P.

The Actuarial science program is highly coveted in the US, not more than 25 schools offer it at the master's level, believe me, I searched and surveyed all of them. I applied to about 2, Middle Tennessee State University and Illinois State University, but because I was coming with an engineering undergrad, no professional exam, and even with my GRE I didn't get any admission. So, be ready if you want to continue with it.

And of course, yes, you can always get funding, but it depends on the strength of your application; work experience in the field, GPA, GRE, professional exams if applicable and research interests and God's favour too.

Lastly, for the English requirement, I applied to at least 14 schools, all waived the TOEFL/IELTS for me. Sometimes it will be stated in their website that you need it, but a simple email to the grad coordinator can get this waived for you, while others state it categorically that if you are from Nigeria that you don't need it.

If you need any further information, just holla. Goodluck.
How many did you get with funding at the end?

I would like to know, what are the chances of getting a visa if you choose to apply with your spouse?

If you would get it u will, no man would die except he has exhausted what has been destined for him. Although applying together if your hubby got a good funding is high. Even if you apply differently u would still get it if God wills. Atleast we saw someone here that got full funding PhD and still got rejected.

I went to the embassy and was only asked a question and it was approved before completing my talk. Although I made it clear that I was transitioning from my just completed masters.

Just chill sister, u would join ur man soon. My wife is also waiting and we don't apply together because we got her passport late.

It will end in praise.

You do need to take a chill pill. An F2 visa is not an emergency… if anything, you’re simply going to be a burden on scarce resources so you can understand why the embassy won’t be giving you an expedited date when you have F1 visa applicants here who can barely find a date.

Also, you are free to “buy a date”… just be expecting to be denied. I wonder why you didn’t just apply with your spouse in the first place.

What right do you have to say all these to someone's wife? If you really don't know how to type calm words you should not respond.

The journey began February 2018 when I received my LOA from Cape Breton University, Nova Scotia to study post degree in public health (2yrs programme). The LOA valid for a year and I applied for visa march 2019 for may intake which was refused on April base on two reasons;
1) VO not satisfy that I will leave canada after my study base on my employment situation
2) VO not satisfy that I will leave canada after my study base on my family tie in canada and my home country

After the refusal, I paused and checked the documents that I submitted from there I discovered my mistakes which are;

Please guys, I'll be going for my medicals at qlife in few days time and I don't reside in Lagos, I am coming from the east so please how do I go about it also I have been advised to stop at ojota and take a bus going to ikoyi but I need a better and more accurate direction from you guys please.

Okay it all depends on where you last bus-stop would be. From anywhere it could be just make sure you get to OBALENDE or CMS. From any of the the two take bus going to EKO HOTEL ROUNDABOUT. Once you get there you can trek because that was what I Did I just follow the google map or u can ask anyone 'Agbero' that you are going to family clinic or u can look for the street where Zenith banl big building is.

Another ways is to take Uber or Bolt from CMS or Obalende.

All the best man.

Thank you for this. I'm there now. Anyone there also?
