This still remains the easiest option, but if Southerners cannot (or refuse) to cooperate, I believe a Nation-state in the SW will be successful and no matter what, everybody will want to associate with success

You may neef to first understand that prior to Oduduwa the King or Abrahamic religion; the Yoruba had a creation story which revolved around a god Oduduwa that was seen as a bottom of the calabash while Obatala was the top of it, this deity was seen as a female, wife of Obatala, by western Yoruba while fpr the Eastern it is male, the husband but a common ground is that they were both on an errand of creation and became rivals. This precedes Oduduwa the human by far. Alfred & Shaka were humans, Oodua for Yorubs can be the creator deity or warrior king. It is fluid.

For me, this is where you nailed it, and considering this whole idea is a concept which ultimately has to be sold in order to gain traction and wide acceptance is is very necessary to try as much as possible to separate fact from fiction or myth.

There is nothing fictional about creating a Nation-State, this is not a joke whereby some roll out of bed and dream of creating an autonomous independent Nation-State, the main consideration here in buy-in and opt-in by most of the participants. Also as a concept, many other considerations have to be explored such as viability and the marketing for obvious reasons, and I could go on and on.

I would just like to say that this is what I do for a living and I get paid extremely handsomely to actualize concepts.
What you are effectively doing is creating a bone of contention before the idea actually germinates.

This makes no sense.

Not all sub-groups have links to Ile-Ife as well.

Why we all revolve around Oduduwa is for the socio-political and socio-cultural system that emerged during his time and as an after-effect after his time. These phenomema cut across every sub-group inclusive of those that have direct links to Ife, direck links to Oduduwa and the actual Yoruba. These phenomena are the reasons for our similarities in almost all facets and why our philosophical approaches to life is collective.

Nonetheless, your idea of consultation with locals for an inclusive system is brilliant.

I have to say this bit of your argument is redundant.
It's like saying the English standing alone, post devolution or separation by way of a constitutional mechanism after the Scots, Welsh, N.Irish and Cornish etc have left, should call themselves ALFRED.

Or out of SA another country should be carved out for the Zulu's called SHAKA! I think it's a lazy proposition and we can do a lot better. We are talking about the development of a modern technologically & economically advanced society based on meritocracy and Knowledge management (well that's) my idea. It should be all-inclusive and encompassing, and such an enterprise will be achievable.

Apart from the Oduduwa king. There is/was Oduduwa the creator of earth in Yoruba creation storyand Oduduwa the female deity so the 'Oodua' could be the creator of earth in creation story for those toens that existed alongside Ife; it could mean the warrior king for those with ties to Ife; it could mean the female deity for those on the western fringes - Ketu & all.

Nonetheless, your idea of consultation with locals for an inclusive system is brilliant.

Interesting post ...... however, rather than dismiss the crux of my contribution as not making any sense, perhaps you'd be able to enlighten us about the sub-groups that consider themselves as YORUBA that do not have any cultural ties with Ile-Ife in one way or another

I am keen to learn about this, and I will concede maturely if you make a good case. My argument is based on research I have personally done.

The bottom-line is we don't really have time to waste, and the idea has to be sold as opposed to being enforced.

My little contribution this afternoon.
I predict this topic in terms of implementation ought to be considered D.O.A.

Basic premise:
Not all sub-collectives relate to being descendants of Ooduduwa, however the common thread running through our collective existence is an affiliation with 'Ile-Ife' as the source.

Thus any idea of a republic ought to be called 'Ile-Ife' or Simply 'Ife' and not 'Ooduduwa' republic.

Now considering this is an idea that needs to be sold to all sub-communities underneath the context of a global or transcending umbrella identity, and it is not going to be IMPOSED, I suggest you do a little bit of consultation unless you are not taking the whole enterprise seriously and you intend to waste people's time.

Cheers

The silent revolution has started and it begins with non-compliance with cultural norms.

Many of these people make up these rules on the fly and that is why we are getting warped results. We lack collective intelligence. We ought to be judged by what we have achieved so far, and I know these things are holding us back. That's why individuals outside the collective have more chance of highly achieving. Abroad, all individuals have to compete and it's mainly about results. Many of our people have an inferiority complex, especially when dealing with foreigners and they should not be allowed to formulate policy about how we all live or extend their sphere of influence over us.

These are modern day realities and considerations. The youth in this country need to rise up

How do we separate corruption of cultural practices from Islam without compromising Islam?

How do you explain that if you go to the Emir of Kano’s palace, you are expected to bow down.[b] If you go to the (American) White House, will you bow down to Mr Donald Trump who has nuclear weapons in his hands? If you go to Kano now, the common man is expected to bow down to the Emir. Is that not a humiliation of human beings? What are they taking about? Our religion is against bowing down to human beings. You only bow down to God. They are misinterpreting the religion and putting blames wrongly on the religion.

If you want to modernise Nigeria, let’s phase out traditional rulers, Emirs and all of that. We will have a more robust leadership by election. This is what Islam is saying: affairs is by consultations and by agreements. Nobody imposes himself as an Emir.

Are you saying that the traditional institution is no longer relevant to the present day reality?

It is not relevant to the modern times and it is not even Islamic because, in Islam, there is no inheritance of power. It is the people that decide their leaders. If the institution will change, this nation will change. The traditional institution represents ignorant people who will go and bow down before them.

Very interesting read, and it raised important cultual issues. The most important thing coming out of this is the initiation of the discussion.

I speak for myself and refer to Yoruba culture, as a Brit, who has been exposed to Yoruba culture from a young age, many of us have had the same experiences and we had to reconcile cultural attitudes/practices and adapt anytime we visit.

One thing I absolutely hate is having to prostrate on the ground certain elders/perceived title holders even though I am a blue blood myself. I mean if I will not do that to the Queen of England who is a lot more powerful than all of the Obas collectively, why the hell would I want to go to my ancestral lands to start to roll on the floor when in the UK I'm a boss with multiple English staff working under me?

Why should I have to show humility and submission in order for some individuals to use it as a pretext for exploitation under the guise of adhering to cultural practices?

Does this cultural practice not do Yoruba's a disservice, especially Yoruba youth in the sense that it aids keeping the masses docile and subservient? The bottom line is Yoruba youth have to grow up to compete with other nationalities later on in life.

We have to be honest with ourselves, will a person that is used to a person prostrating and rolling on the ground to them ever really want that individual to eclipse their achievements in life? Moreover, why does the lack of prostating equate to disrespect?

Lastly, these practices have influenced how our people interact with foreigners. There are foreigners that have come to our shores due to the docile attitude of our people and they know fully well that they will never be able to live anywhere in the world and be able to exploit it's people in such a manner.

This is why I set my own standards and I'm really weary of the mind-set of the traditionalists. I am a free man with my head held high, and this is something I intend to pass on to my kids. The bottom line is to question everything, and do not let others exploit you.

Nevertheless, the detected sum represents money that belongs to the State and the current Administration have a right to close any operations and recover the funds to the coffers of the State.

Was it the case that he was found to be corrupt, or the fact that he was heavy handed? When I watched him being interviewed, he could not answer the question regarding, how much had been recovered so far? However, that was an unfair question, as seized funds have to go through the legal system first, and the state has to win the case against the accused prior to legitimately being declared "recovered funds".

He should have had an asset/fund tracker (staff) with him in that session.

tit:
How can the corrupt Magu work for efcc.
Since he has been indicted for corruption, magu should be dismissed from government work.

Buhari needs to act now, the current challenge by the NASS directly challenges the "Rule of Law" as a constitutional doctrine.

Buhari needs to appoint Tunde Bakare as EFCC head and keep Magu as his deputy, and then we will begin to see how the chips fall!

If "All citizens are equal under the Law", how can (some) NASS members use their sphere of influence to effectively check-mate attempts by the Executive to pass certain requests through their chamber due to personal interests.

Not only is this irresponsible, it is also unpatriotic.

What is becoming more apparent under this current administration is that the NASS are trying to emerge as the most influential arm of the State.

If Saraki is clean, why are there orchestrated attempts to stop any investigations into his dealings by the EFCC.

One thing is for sure, if citizens can't comprehend or accept this simple priniciple, then you can kiss development good bye.

How is it possible to bastardize such a simple concept as the "Rule of Law" ?

Bakare will spit fire and will be an effective check on these influential individuals. We need action urgently!

Politics / Re: Nominate An Acting Vice President For Osinbajo by ShangoThor(m): 6:52pm On Mar 09, 2017
I'm not too sure about the Nigerian constitution, however, if this were the US, there wouldn't be a nomination. Saraki steps directly into that role by default. I know many would suffer heart attacks at the prospect of a Yoruba #1 and #2 .... but that is what would happen, albeit, #2 is a quasi northerner wink.

But, where in the Nigerian constitution does it stipulate that under such circumstances, this is what will happen.

I suppose all we have is the convention of Yaradua's circumstances where the Party made the nomination, but note that was not due to any constitutional provision.

I await for further enlightenment on this issue.

Within a week of the EU (particularly Germany) asserting the support for a Marshall Plan for Africa with the development of enhanced Power (Electricity) generation capability being part of the backbone of their plan, we have Saraki et al visiting Germany.

We have to make noise and protest to the EU that any financial aide to enhance our Power infrastructure has to be monitored in order to mitigate the risk of the funds being siphoned into private bank accounts.

Saraki is wealthy enough and extremely shady. Enough is enough!

Don't be fooled guys, Saraki is a snake and has no loyalty but to his accumulation of wealth. This is nothing but a launch for a "Presidential Bid" by stealth.

Coming on the backdrop of the "Mere Commissioner" receiving positive rave reviews, and positive feedback.

God bless Osinbajo, I have absolute faith in this man and he is capable of performing a lot more efficiently.

We need to demand a lot more from Osinbajo, he is intelligent, efficient and capable of delivering.

God bless "ALL" the peoples of Nigeria

As a neutral, regarding the topic (even though I know it's a hot potato), I am still yet to be provided with an adequate explanation as to why political actors had to be murdered during the first coup. Everything went downhill after that first coup, and judging politicians by today's standards, the politiciains then were saints, okay, maybe, saints harbouring prejudice!

Furthermore, it was a bit politically naive to assume that any European colonial power would let any region within the artificial boundaries of countries they formed assert independence without the colonial power sanctioning it, I think this was a massive mistake. Especially as under Ikemba, it would have been viewed with suspicion and also from the perspective of a military dispensation.

Which rubbish stupid stellar idea is he talking about.

Federal character and quota system are embedded in our constitution and PMB and his VP must make sure they adhere to it by appointing qualified people from all Zones.

With this ridiculous idea they will now field a lot of people from about 2 zones claiming they are the most qualified as if other zones cannot have qualified people for the post or ministerial job.

After fielding people based on zoning and winning the elections, they want to jettison zoning as if Buhari was the most qualified person without zoning the presidency to the North within their party.

My point is until we do the right thing which is practice true federalism or regionalism we will continue to try to be smart by half. What they are proposing will only cause more disaffection in the country if any zone is marginalised further.

I don't want to believe what was written about the restructuring of NNPC and the speculations of appointments thare but its what might happen here too.

Here we go again! I've got to engage. The mention of 'Federal Character' was first coined by OBJ and Zoning is nothing but a PDP consturct, an extra-consitutional Party rule which is not stipulated in the constitution.

Federal Character and Zoning are virtually unworkable priciples that are not practiced anywhere in the world. They can never be guaranteed because of being naturally limited by nature. There will always be anomalies in Nature. Man is mortal hence the only way that it can be bolstered to a certain extent is if both no 1 and no 2 positions are awarded to the same zonal region, which in itself would be self defeating. This was the problem with Yaradua and GEJ which almost destabilized the polity.

Bearing in mind that the Nation State has serious short comings and we cannot even successfully run a national postal service or telephone corporation why should we further complicate things.

I mean where else is zoning practiced? UK,US, Germany, SA, India? Zoning is a joke.

Lets take SA for example, after Apartheid, they could have zoned the presidency to Mandela's (ANC), then Buthuleizi's (Zulus) and then back to the Whites

or USA

Northern Presidency then Southern Presidency

or UK

England, Wales, Scotland

or India

Hindus, Sikhs, Moslems

I could go no and on, but seriously, its a crude and primitive form of Politics that will eventually destabilize the Nation State as a collective.

Unfair comparison IMHO. Yes it is true, Bakare is brash and more confrontational however, Bakare is not very good at proffering solutions to problems. Watch video clips of them speaking. 170 Million Nigerians exist to moan about imperfect issues, but few offer solutions.

Watch clips of Osinbajo, and he is a breath of fresh air, plus he has added credence of deciphering and understanding issues from a legal perspective which will inform or shape legal and social policy.

Majority of Nigerians hate rules, but the changes required have to be enshrined in Laws.

I prefer Osinbajo anyday, an intellectual that not only explains the the nature of the problem, but also the reason why he has adopted a particular approach towards opting for a particular solution.

Sirniyeh:
I'm just imagining what the atmosphere could have been awashed with if Pastor Bakare emerges the Vice President of Nigeria.

In comparism, Bakare seems to be wearing garment of pride. Though they both read law but one turned out to be SAN while other faces full time ministry.

But it seems Bakare understands Nigeria well than Prof and also could fit the post well. He could have been a better subordinate to boost GMB but fate ran out of him.

Bakare is outspoken, very charismatic and no nonsense pastor who abhors corruption...

Should Pastor Bakare be given any Ministerial portfolio?

Europe has a refugee crisis at the moment and stabilising Nigeria is key to stemming the flow of illegal refugees into Europe from Sub-Saharan Africa via the Libyan crossing via Sea. It is not feasible to have unfettered immigration into the EU.

The game has changed and Africa has to be stabilised. Moreover, at this juncture in time, IMHO, only GMB can stabilise the Nigerian Polity and Economy.
