CareerRe: Talent Is Better Than Education by sholay2011(m): 11:40pm On Feb 09, 2013
Op, calm down first. Seems you were high when you typed this nonsensical jargon. grin

On a serious note, how can you say talent is better than education? Don't you know education even helps to sharpen talent and brings about the side of professionalism, that's why we have courses like theatre arts, music etc?

Op, pls tell me, what serious economy is sustained by revenue generated from entertainment or talent MAJORLY? You cannot even survive to type this if some ppl such as farmers who put food on ur table and doctors fail to do their job who ensure we survive a diseased world and you're here ranting about talent. Don't you know no matter how much talent is, its survival is based on other things?

To make a standard movie, it's nt really based on 'so much' talent but rather good camera work and special effects which are products of technology. Technology is learnt thru education (though not like the one in Naija sha).

And as much as ppl wiv talent who have 'made' it are respected, they would always be less respected than ppl that deal with more serious issues that affect human survival. You don't expect ppl to respect genevieve than Ngozi-Okonjo Iweala or Tuface than Obasanjo (God forbid!) Or even dbanj than fashola!

Talent is good but not a thing that is sustainable for everyone...and education is never overrated...it is just misapplied in the nigerian case.

Ramsey Noah takes the lead with much credit due to his experience but Majid is a close second with more raw talent. Van vicker should be the last.
Anyone that has seen 'Stronger than Pain' would know osuofia is a good actor.

OP, are you a ritualist looking for a virgin for blood money? (No insult intended).

The post sounds too weird to be true...'Extremely beautiful, virgin, but attitude is by the way?!'
If this is real, the poster should go for deliverance. Nonsense!

As for me, it is Muyiwa Ademola followed closely by Femi Adebayo.
Odunlade is overrated and can't really act to save his life. But the fact is they are all above average.

BTW, why re most of them posing the same way in the pics?

TV/MoviesRe: Genevieve Nnaji's Scenes Cut Out Of Half Of A Yellow Sun by sholay2011(m): 8:57pm On Jan 31, 2013
Originalsly: But why cast her and not use her?Can you imagine Hollywood casting Denzel Washington and not using him?
Bros, it seems you don't know how it goes in all these hollywood movies. Many scenes don't make it to the final cut of a movie. So, if an actor's part in d movie is deemed dispensable and also below what it's expected, it is usually edited from the final cut.

Villageboi has said it all. I doubt if she even took time to read the novel or at least where her character comes in to have a full grasp of what is required and how to research for such role.

Our actors don't have time for that but rather depend on their 'rare' talent to give 'hot' interpretation to 'lack-of-depth' scripts landing on their laps.

Much ado about talent!
TV/MoviesRe: Genevieve Nnaji's Scenes Cut Out Of Half Of A Yellow Sun by sholay2011(m): 9:53am On Jan 31, 2013
Awww...this is where talent trumps stardom.

Though Genevieve has the raw talent, but I think she has been to busy with her stardom that she has not taken time to improve her acting skills.

I saw 'Mirror Boy' and her acting was a bit below par. She didn't play 'Tijan's mother' lyk I expected.

I hope she learns from this so she doesn't focus on being a movie star (since she is already one locally) but should focus on being an actress!

jidegirl12: I understand grandma's frustration due to the current situation in Nigeria... Nobody back home understand what goes on here until they come on down ( Bob Parker cheesy) and see for themselves...,

However Damiso... Saying grandma's well being is not her hubby's responsibility is kinda little outta line wink... Infact it's falls both on them..no matter how small her contribution is to the family purse is what she can afford for now because of their current status... they need to find a way to send the little( even very little) they can to grandma ... what bout the hubby, did you ask if he sends money to his own family or not?

Unity is preached every-time in Marriage but is taking care of your parents not supposed to be part of your family budget?( Extras aside?)

To answer your question, I think grandma is suffering and they only way she thinks she could reach out is to be inappropriate...
Did you type this while dreaming? Abeg, the woman should be considerate joor. Does she want to destroy her daughter's matrimonial home because she is 'suffering'? Is the woman in question her only child? Can't she be productive or she expects to live for the rest of her life on the 'fruits of her labour'? It is the responsibility of the couple to take care of the woman, but when things are very hard, you consider your family first! Besides, they still have two children oh whose growth isn't stagnant.lol.

TV/MoviesSilver Linings Playbook by sholay2011(op): 9:39pm On Jan 25, 2013
I just saw the movie 'Silver Linings Playbook' and I can tell you it's an awesome experience. The movie carefully combines drama with comedy and a little bit of romance. It centers on a man (PAT SOLITANO- played by Bradley cooper) who just arrived from a mental institution and tries to use a 'mysterious' lady known for her 'sexcapades'(TIFFANY- played by Jennifer Lawrence) to win back his wife- NIKKY. And the two lead characters (Pat and Tiffany) later found their silver linings as the movie progresses.

The acting is solid, especially from 'Jlaw' who stands out from the stellar cast that includes Robert De Niro, Jacki weaver, Julia Stiles, Chris Tucker etc. Directing was on point by David O Russel. The movie has been nominated for 8 academy awards holding this February.

It's a movie to watch.

TV/MoviesRe: On-stage Versus On-screen Acting by sholay2011(op): 8:24am On Jan 24, 2013
VillageBoi: I do also believe that stage acting is more complex than acting for the screen for the very reasons you mentioned. A relevant question could be "Why is 'Nollywood' screen acting generally terrible?"
Our society, culture, traditions, way of life, mentality and so on probably contribute to why 'screen' acting is so hard for us. We are naturally extra loud, extra brash, perform extra gesticulations and 'extra' in everything we do which is what makes us very natural 'stage' actors - we Nigerians all do this in our daily lives; we are such 'attention' seekers and as it is 'normal' for us we transfer this 'normal' behaviour to the screen and that is where it fails.

Stage actors are simply loud and extra everything in order to carry the message all the way to people sitting right at the back that can't see them up-close (the general gist of it, there are other reasons). With the screen none of this is needed as a flutter of an eyelid is seen, the trembling of a lip is seen, a wry smile, a squint of the eyes... these minute movements are exaggerated by the lens... so the trick becomes how to 'tone down' these things so they do not look exaggerated but natural for the medium.

How many of our actors, directors, producers all say they studied 'Theatre' at one uni or another? That could be one of the problems... remember we are also very much the "I cannot be told" people. Where are places that strictly teach 'acting for the screen'? Both types of acting are difficult and IMHO both types of these actors, especially in Nigeria, need to be trained. With us, when it comes to the screen, it is not enough to say one is a 'natural' as our 'natural' is already soaked in our 'staged' (pun intended) way of life. Pick anyone off the street and put them in front of a camera and immediately the 'extra' comes out; mostly starting with an over acting of the dialogue that turns into a sing-along-song in a weird accent. It goes downhill from there and those that need to carry the blame are the directors & producers...

Kpa, kpa, kpa productions can never be all-round good. I've been on sets where actors were learning there lines then and there - so no rehearsals to iron out these problems. Can we make movies in which EVERY single role is good & convincing? Yes... but producers need to make sure that there is way more time for pre-production & rehearsals. Good thread Sholay, hopefully it becomes an interesting debate with varied views.

PS - By the way stage production performances in Nigeria blow Broadway out of the water. We are simply amazing!!
Lol. God bless you for your contribution. I agree wiv u. I hope I'm nt guilty of the 'extra' or "overacting' sef. God help our craft.
