In defence of Mourinho

It looks like Jose Mourinho will be sanctioned by the all-mighty UEFA for commenting on its representative in Wednesday's match at the Bernabeu, Wolfgang Stark, and a perceived pro-Barcelona conspiracy. Even worse, probably, is the fact that Mourinho had the audacity to be critical of the Catalan club. In this day and age, it no longer seems an acceptable course of action.

Let's have a look then at what exactly Mourinho is deemed guilty of.

First of all, he claims the referee's decision to send Pepe off changed the game in Barcelona's favour. Now take any game which, with all 22 players on the pitch, has 0-0 on the scoreboard with none of the teams likely to score any time soon, not even the team which is obviously playing the best football on the night. If the referee then decides to send a player off from either team, does that change the game in the other team's favour? Of course it does. More so when said player has so far nullified any threat from the opposition's - and the world's - best player, thus justifying his manager's tactics. Spot on there, then.

His claims that the red card was unjust are also far from incorrect. Both Pepe and Dani Alves go for a loose ball. They both go in hard, with their foot raised. Evidence now suggests there was no contact but, on first viewing, it would be difficult to criticise the decision to award a foul against Pepe. However, the referee certainly didn't look like he was going for a red card before Alves turned on the method acting (with one flaw: would you roll about if your leg was really hurt?), the stretcher came out and he was surrounded by the rest of Barcelona's squad. Watching from the sideline, Alves had to be stopped from jumping straight off said stretcher once he got what he wanted. Also, shortly before, Javier Mascherano was late with a challenge and kicked Pepe full in the shin with the ball nowhere near. Surely that should also have been a red?

Mourinho also says that Barcelona's win in 2009 was tainted because of that game at Stamford Bridge. Now I think the vast majority would agree that Chelsea were robbed in that game by a referee who made a number of incredible mistakes. The home team were better than Barcelona on the night but had four penalty claims turned down, two of them clearly valid or, as is now the appropriate expression, stonewall. Anyone with a decent pair of eyes, unclouded by the current atmosphere of Barcelona deification, can see that the 2009 final should have been Chelsea v Manchester United. Again, it is hard to see what is wrong with that statement.

It isn't even a dig at Pep Guardiola, as many seem to have interpreted it. Mourinho begins by stressing that he thinks of the Barcelona boss as "a fantastic coach." He merely points out that he would be ashamed to have won the Champions League in such a fashion. That is, of course, rubbish. Manchester United will surely have a thing or two to say about a game against Porto, then managed by Mourinho, in 2004. But it is not in any way an insult towards Guardiola. I am certain that Mourinho has a lot of respect for his nemesis, just as he had for Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger. He has a knack of winding people up, but again I cannot see the problem here. For Barcelona to ask for charges against Mourinho smacks of a lack of grace in victory.

Where Mourinho does of course go wrong is when he draws Unicef and UEFA into the whole debate and goes off on a conspiracy tangent. It is merely a rant by a manager who feels he has just been robbed of a result, a result he could well have got. By negative tactics, granted, but football is about results.

Let us not forget that, a mere week before, Real won the Copa del Rey, beating Barcelona using exactly the same tactics they were now unable to fully deploy. It would take a very big person not to be frustrated and angry straight after that game. Mourinho was unable to be magnanimous in this case, but maybe UEFA should try for once to look at this with some perspective. But, again, UEFA does not respond well to criticism.

All this seems to be papered over by a large proportion of press and public, who merely point out the fact that "the best team won". But first of all, apart from having their usual massive percentage of possession, Barcelona weren't very good at all before Pepe was sent off. And secondly, if the best team should always win, shouldn't we just abolish all competitions and give all the cups to Barcelona from now on? They may be the best squad in the world, but surely that shouldn't imply another squad should be forbidden to try to stop them.

And who says a visioneer wouldn't take directions from God? He takes directions based on his revelations per time, which may not be understood by someone afar off.

For Daystar, yea, i'm a full member now. After so many years with Living Faith, i needed some change. Daystar is a breath of fresh air. i still go to winners occasionally, and i try not to miss their vigil and other special progs. Rev. Sam is a role model, his humility is inspiring, his messages are lifting, and he emphasizes EXCELLENCE. Its an urban youth church, and its cool. Oyedepo is his mentor and he doesn't deny it in any way.

As a side question, what do you think about modern pastors living lavish lifestyles? as representatives of God and examples to their flock, ¹ do you think for these men to live in opulence is out of step & inconsistent with the examples Jesus and His disciples set? If not, can you please say why? ² furthermore, do you say there is a possibility for church funds/finances to be misused?

Jesoul, I'm no judge when it comes to this, but then the definition of 'lavish lifestyle' as practiced by a modern pastor is subjective, and there are lots of variables to it. Perception is also something else. Someone may not even live a lifestyle that's lavish but then again he may be storing or cornering all church funds for something else, meanwhile the world would see him as a true man of God. So you see it depends on the particular situation.

Jesus said, judge not so that you won't be judged. If you had brought out a scripture these men violated then i guess we could start from there, meanwhile conjecture isn't good enough. For the possibility of misuse of church funds/finances, well i know its very possible for pastors to misuse church funds, and it happens with some churches, small or big (irrespective of size).

don't be too hasty to jump to assertions without reading clearly what was posted. I said one of the best private universities if not the best from this part of Africa. Note that i didnt say it is one of the best universities if not the best.

You are not even sure how many times you benefitted and i'm supposed to believe you actually did?besides the point is not in how many people get the scholarship,the point is the church now employs charity as CSR whereas that should be its major focus.for exampl a certain church has a programme it tags widow's nite once in a friggin year whereas iy spends a whole lot of money on other less imortant things.so the widows need food only once a year right?the point you fail to notice is that the acquisition of a fourth jet is absolutely unnecessary and that money could have been used to directly impact the members of the church who are in need.

I said i think, cos i know i benefitted once (N15, 000, the amount has been upped time and again since then), and then i tried to, the following year, i applied but didn't go for it (sometimes you forget somethings, its over 10 years now, haba). I actually declined to go for the second one (i remember well now) cos i didn't need it cos my finances were ok by then.

Anyways, who makes you a judge, why do you have to decide whether what they do is CSR or their main mission work? Are you the visioneer? I think you should slow down, appreciate good things, and strive to do your own best to help humanity in your own little way.

BTW, though am still a member (i go occasionally), i've not been regular cos am now a full member of Daystar, that's why i said i don't know why they decided to buy a fourth one; who knows, maybe they will sell one off, or give it out, or whatever. Am no judge, and i dont think you should be, particularly when you may not have the insider info.

Seems you don't understand how wikipedia works. It is a site that is open to the public for edition. While some facts have been cited on the site , it is still open to collusion especially when it comes to personalities. There are many private universities in Nigeria whose fees dwarf what Covenant University charges. Take for example this new university called Baze University, Abuja with only 3 colleges, charging N1.5m per session, excluding accommodation and Covenant which charges about N300,000 per session. Don't forget that CU is one of the best private universities if not the best from this part of Africa, and with the 24 hours electricity, internet access, quality of staff and their top-notch salary scales, it is good value for money. Besides, many middle class parents and even those who struggle to give their children good education, have their children there.

Besides the scholarship are not just for those members who attend CU but every other university in Nigeria. I benefitted once or twice way back in 1999 or 2000 when i was in the university, and that was before CU was even established.

For starters, the man didn't just feel like owning aircrafts, he saw it in a vision many years earlier. The needs of having an aircraft became more apparent as his ministry grew. Asides him, other members of the leadership also use the aircrafts for ministry purposes. However, i don not know why they had to buy a fourth one, but i know there must have been a reason.

As at September 2010, Winners Chapel has branches in at least 63 cities in 48 African countries. The mandate to Africa is known as the African Gospel Invasion Program (AGIP). The foreign mandate is an arm of the World Mission Agency (WMA) of the ministry. In 2000, the prompting came to reach out beyond Africa and this mandate is now known as the "Mission to the World" (MTW). As at September 2010,there are at least 10 branches of Winners Chapel in the USA in cities like Houston, Georgia, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Chicago, Dallas, Philadelphia, Minnesota and Massachusetts. There are also branches in the UK, UAE, Belgium, The Caribbean, Canada, China, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan among others all over the world; in Nigeria alone, there are about 3,000 local branches and about 24,000 satellite fellowships in the Lagos area.

Every week or every other week, this man travels. In 2009 i think, he virtually went to almost all the countries in Africa where his ministry was.

Its easier to criticize a man of God, or even just about anybody without knowing what the person's true motives are. Many do not know the man gives scholarships worth N100m every year; they do not know the church provides for its poor members or those in need through its satellite fellowships; they do not know how BIG the ministry is, such that using a public airline wouldn't be effective. Truth is, very few are called to have missions as much as his. How many would have derailed just at the slight success they would encounter on their way? So many. It takes a tireless, committed visioneer to keep at it despite the success. How many successful men of his level would still be working 16hours daily? Few, i think.

Even John D. Rockefeller (not a pastor, but an entrepreneur), the richest man of his time, was a tither, from an early age. Four generations after, his family is being recognised as America's most successful family. And one of his favorite quotes is "If your only goal is to become rich, you will never achieve it." He ended up giving out most of his wealth, and this goes on even till today through the Rockefeller Foundation and many others.

It's more than just the desire for success or wealth; it is a vision, a mission, to make the world a better place.

Before the recent acquisition of the fourth jet and the commencement of 4th service early this year, did you know that Bishop Oyedepo of the Winners Chapel is a man whose vision many can't seem to fathom, nevertheless he is one with a mission which i don't think is for personal pleasures. Kindly read the excerpt of some his achievements below:

Winners' Chapel (also known as Living Faith Church) is a megachurch founded by Bishop David Oyedepo in 1981.
On May 1 and 2 !981, in a long drawn out 18 hour vision in a certain 'International Hotel' in Ilesa, Old Oyo State, Brother David Oyedepo, a native of Omu-Aran in Kwara State,Nigeria received a mandate that "The hour has come to liberate the world from all oppression and wickedness of satan through the preaching of the word of faith; and I am sending you to undertake this task". Immediately after this, he sent the message to all his friends and the 'Powerhouse', a group of about 70 members, praying and fellowshipping under the aegis of 'Faith Liberation Hour', a weekly programme was established. The church had its first and commissioning service in Ilorin, Kwara State, Northern Nigeria on September 17, 1983 and Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God commissioned the ministry. At inception, there came an instruction to move to 'Damascus' which was understood to be Kaduna. The Kaduna branch consisted of four members and is now known as the "Garden of Faith". During a Powerhouse meeting in April 1982, Brother David Oyedepo listed seven areas where God had spoken to him concerning the future of the ministry. He stated that "at the base of the commission will be a tent which will sit 50,000 people". He stated that very soon there will be millions gathering at the base to listen to the gospel. He added that he saw them flying with the gospel on wings which showed that soon the ministry will have her own aircraft. He added that the whole world will soon be able to hear the message of the commission from the base. At that time, the internet as we know it today was not in view. At the inception of the ministry, David Oyedepo got instruction to commit the spoken word into writing with the same measure of proof. This led to the establishment of the Dominion Publishing House which won the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Gold Award in 1996 and has produced over 7 million books till date.

In 1987 while in the United States he got an instruction from God to "Get back home and make my people rich". This served as a major thrust for the prosperity message of the commission. He was ordained as a "Bishop" by the late Archbishop Benson Idahosa of the Church of God Mission in 1988. During the church's Easter Faith convention in April 1987, Pastor David Oyedepo announced that the church was to begin to spread out and on 27 May,1987, exactly a month later, the first five branches of the church were established in 5 Nigerian towns namely Mubi, Azare, Biu, Maiduguri and Bauchi. In 1989, Bishop Oyedepo received a vision from God to "Get down to Lagos and raise me a people". This set the stage for the Lagos branch to start up in September 1989 with the name "Winners Chapel". The first service in Lagos had about 300 people in attendance. By December 1993, the Lagos church had 3,000 worshippers and by December 1994 it had increased to 10,000 members. In 1996, Archbishop Benson Idahosa was invited to dedicate the church's Iyana Ipaja facility located at Raji Oba street. This consisted of a 3,000 seater auditorium with overflow facilities for 30,000 as well as an eight ( floor tower which was the World Mission Agency headquarters. This $50 million (N7.5 Billion) facility was already largely inadequate in less than 2 years of its existence. The church membership increased to 75,000 in single services by the middle of 1999. The name "Winners Chapel" soon became the popular name of the church even more so than the original name "The Living Faith World Outreach Centre" (LFWOC). Kaduna worshippers however still love to go by the name " Garden of Faith". The Garden of Faith is the national headquarters of the church. In 1993, the Vice-President of the Living Faith Church and then senior Pastor of the Maiduguri church, Pastor David Abioye was ordained "Bishop". Bishop Abioye is an exemplary leader and an epitome of faithfulness in the Living Faith church and christendom as a whole. Driving back to Kaduna from Zaria after a meeting on May 4 1994, Bishop Oyedepo heard a call from God that "The harvest of Africa was over-ripe and that he should rush in and preserve it from decadence". On May 8, 1994,the mandate was dedicated with a giant map of Africa and on January 15, 1995, the first missionaries left the shores of Nigeria. As at September 2010, Winners Chapel has branches in at least 63 cities in 48 African countries. The mandate to Africa is known as the African Gospel Invasion Program (AGIP). The church teaches the importance of faith and that both divine healing and material prosperity are benefits of submission to God's will. It belongs to the Renewal.[1]
The international headquarters of Winners Chapel is called Faith-Tabernacle. It covers about 70 acres (280,000 m2) and is built inside an over 10,500-acre (42 km2) church complex called Canaanland, the international headquarters of the ministry in Ota, a suburb of Lagos. The building took 12 months to be completed. The foundation laying took place on August 29, 1998 and the announcement of the time frame of one year for the building project was announced on September 13, 1998 by Bishop Oyedepo at the Iyana Ipaja church while work began on September 18, 1998. The dedication of the building took place on September 19, 1999 with 97,800 people in attendance. Faith Tabernacle is presently the largest church building in the world, with a sitting capacity of 50,400 people and an outside overflow capacity of over 250,000, with three services every Sunday. Construction completed in Canaanland till date is estimated to be not less than $600 million(N90 Billion) with an additional Canaan City estate currently in construction which will be the largest housing estate in Africa and easily one of the largest in the world with 15,000 housing units and at a cost of N250 Billion or $1.6 Billion. This is part of a Grander scheme of 150,000 houses to be built by the church. Faith Tabernacle is the fulfilment of the vision delivered in April 1982. Over 300,000 people have been counted at single meetings at Canaanland. Cannanland was procured in 1998 and was initially 560 acres (2.3 km2). Presently it is over 10,500 acres (42 km2) and will take about 120 km to navigate around it. As an educationist, Bishop David Oyedepo's mission currently pioneers the establishment of educational institutions at all levels in and outside Nigeria, including the recently established "HEBRON" or Covenant University with over 7,000 students as well as Faith Academy with 1,500 students both located in Canaanland. Covenant university was well documented in a Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) documentary on the Nigerian 50th independence anniversary because of landmark achievements in its few years of existence. Covenant University was adjudged the best private university in Nigeria in 2005 and one of the goals of the institution is to be among the best in the world by or before 2020. According to Bishop Oyedepo, "Covenant University is not just an institution, it is a revolution in education". Faith Academy on the other hand placed fourth of all secondary schools in Nigeria during the 2010 Senior secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE). The second university of the church known as Landmark University in Omu Aran, Kwara State was approved by the Nigerian Government in March 2011 and immediately resumed academic activities the same month with about 1000 students. Construction at Landmark university is estimated to be in the realm of at least $50 million (N7 billion) so far while Bishop Oyedepo insists that 'spending continues'. Landmark University (LU) has the mandate of spearheading an aggrarian revolution in Nigeria. Bishop David Oyedepo stated in August 2010 that it takes a ride of more than 100 km to go around the walls of Landmark University. Landmark University consists presently of 1,400 acres. There are strong plans for about 5 more universities to be constructed across Africa including Abuja and Calabar in Nigeria, Ghana, Democratic republic of Congo and Kenya as announced by Bishop Oyedepo during Shiloh 2007. 1,000 acres have already been acquired for the university in Ghana while 300 hectares (about 750 acres)have been acquired for the Congo university and this is going to be a French speaking university. Recently, President Yahya Jammeh of The Gambia appealed to the World Mission Agency (WMA) of the Living Faith Church to build a university in The Gambia. Some other projects that were announced during the initial foundation laying in Canaanland in 1999 include a towering administrative headquarters and 500 bed hospital among many other projects.
Winners' Chapel also runs a chain of about 12 Secondary schools and over 50 Primary and nursery schools in Nigeria. The secondary schools are known as Faith Academies except those located in within the universities known as Covenant University and Landmark University Secondary Schools respectively. The Nursery and Primary Schools are known as Kingdom heritage Model Schools (KHMS). Some of the secondary schools are located in Badagry, Iyana Ipaja, Ibadan, Asaba, Kaduna, Ilorin and Osogbo. The mission is presently working on plans to build at least a secondary school each in every country in Africa. It also has its own Bible School, called Word of Faith Bible Institute (WOFBI); this is the biggest such group in Nigeria with branches in over 30 countries worldwide including the United States of America, the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates. As at 2004, WOFBI had trained over 100,000 people all over Africa. WOFBI has 15 campuses in the Lagos Area alone. [b]Other assets of the Church are three aircraft including a Challenger 604 with call sign "N664D" which is listed in the Forbes 500. The Church aircraft fleet is known as the Dominion Airlines which is used strictly for missionary work and the church has also procured an aircraft Hangar at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. Construction is presently going on at the Hangar costing about $2.5 million (N350 million). The church has a fleet of over 400 buses that convey worshippers to and from Faith-Tabernacle, Canaanland. In August 2010, the church procured another fleet of 100 brand new buses. The second aircraft is parked at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja for use by the vice president, Bishop David Abioye. [/b]The Church also owns Dominion Publishing House, which turns out books and other materials written by David and Faith Oyedepo and David Abioye. Bishop Oyedepo has written over 70 books apart from many also written by Bishop Abioye and Pastor (Mrs) Faith Oyedepo. An arm of the Ministry, World Mission Agency (WMA) provides welfare and other health and humanitarian services to the needy in the society. [b]An annual amount of N100,000,000 (One hundred million naira)or $700,000 (Seven hundred thousand dollars) is administered in scholarships for education up to first degree level to church members through the David Oyedepo Scholarship Scheme and channelled through the Satellite Fellowships where membership is validated. Automatic scholarship is also available to all children members of primary school age. After the bomb blast that rocked the Ikeja Cantonment at the turn of the last decade, the Red Cross announced that the consignment from the Winners Chapel was the largest by a single organization since the Nigerian Civil War. Also, the WMA has moved aggressively into Koma hills in Northern Nigeria where it sunk 47 boreholes in 1997 and built nursery, primary and secondary schools. The Church also provided relief to Liberian citizens during the Liberian Civil War. The Winners Chapel is currently undertaking the construction of "Goshen" which is a camp like Canaanland in Abuja and is along kilometre 26, Abuja-Keffi Road. It has an ultra-modern auditorium which accommodates over 15,000 and a secondary school, Faith Academy, a Youth Centre as well as Kingdom Heritage Model School (nursery and primary) which were all dedicated on Oct 2nd 2010. The auditorium is a replica of the Faith Tabernacle. Goshen is complete with a dual-carriage way running through the 740 acre facility with street lightning as well as a housing estate with over 45 housing units among others and all these were constructed in only 15 months. [/b]There are plans for a university to be built in Goshen. Goshen is now the Mission Headquarters of the Living faith Church. I support Goodluck Jonathan for President because he is the best among the lot. Buhari is no match for him in terms of capacity to take this country to the next level. During the last one year, Nigeria has witnessed increase in supply of electricity, and is on track with a blueprint for transformation of the energy sector. Also, fuel scarcity has become a thing of the past, people used to spend hours and nights on queues, fuel prices used to be hiked, transport fares used to be hiked, but all that has ceased since Goodluck's ascension. The rail project is getting to life. Yar'Adua may have started it, but Goodluck ensured its delivery and its continued transformation  (just the way tinubu started the BRT/LAMATA thing, and Fashola took the credit and expanded the scope further). Goodluck is concerned about the education sector, we haven't heard of nationwide ASUU strikes, New Universities are being commissioned to give more people opportunities to get admission. Airports are being commissioned (Enugu), Policies are being given full support (PIB, FOI bill etc.). Gas Project has been launched a few weeks ago, which will deliver many thousands of jobs to Nigerians, Niger Delta militancy has reduced drastically, there's much improvement in the exploration and production of oil in the Niger Delta region, meaning more in terms of GDP in the economy, foreign investors are comfortable with GEJ's government, Nigeria is now the 4th fastest growing economy in the world, with solid growth potential in the next five years accroding to UK Govt., AND SO MUCH MORE. If we give this man a chance, Nigeria will truly become great again!
