Reading this gave me nostalgic feelings, things have changed a lot, Back then, people loved MTRL to Toronto because of grilling

Pandatown:
Update after receiving my study permit approval (check my post history for approval testimony)

I arrived 27th December at Toronto Pearson Airport with my TRV to collect my study permit document at CBSA Checkpoint

Documents CBSA asked me to show them:

+ Letter Of Introduction
+ Letter of Acceptance from my college
+ PAL letter used in getting the study permit approval
+ Full Tuition payment of first semester receipt & deposit receipt from offer
+ Enrolment schedule of class for my Winter intake

Questions I was asked by CBSA after giving them the documents they requested above:

CBSA: You only paid first semester?
Me: Yes my college only allows us to per for a full semester at a given time
CBSA: Okay. Have you been refused study permit before to Canada?
Me: Yes I was the first time
CBSA: Why were you refused?
Me: I didn't properly show the source of funds for my financial documents
CBSA: Who is supporting your studies in Canada?
Me: My sister is my sponsor
CBSA: Where does your sister live?
Me: The US
CBSA: How long has she been there and what's her status?
Me: She has been there since X year and she is a green card holder
CBSA: What's her occupation and how much did she give you for your studies in Canada?
Me: She is X occupation and she gave me 45 million naira for tuition and living expenses
CBSA: How much is that in CAD
Me: About 40,000 CAD at the time of my application
CBSA: Have you been to Canada before?
Me: No this is my first time
CBSA: Do you have any family members in Canada
Me: No I don't have any family members in Canada
CBSA: Have you travelled to other countries for long term stay before?
Me: Yes I studied in Cyprus
CBSA: What did you study there?
Me: Medicine
CBSA: That's good. Why did you decide to pursue Biotechnology in Canada then?
Me: I decided I want to go into clinical diagnostics and Pharma in Nigeria after completing my studies in Canada
CBSA: Okay. This passport has a lot of pages is this the new Nigerian passport?
Me: Yes the new ones valid for 10 years have many pages than the old ones they used to issue
CBSA: Okay wait here for a moment
CBSA: Here is your study permit read the conditions and confirm your name and birth date. Check your permit expiry date. If you need to extended your study permit do so two months in advance before expiry. Let me know if you have any questions.
Me: Okay I have read it and all is accurate and I don't have questions.
CBSA: Alright let me stamp your passport and you can be on your way

This is the most grilling experience I have had for a visa haha. Funny thing is the two Asian students in front of me they didn't ask any of them any questions and they just handed them their study permit after seeing their acceptance letter pal and intro letter only.

Hope this can guide anyone that is approved for study on what to bring and questions CBSA may ask you. Good luck.

Hello everyone,

Paying my respects to this group where my journey began, starting here in 2016, following the thread until I obtained my student visa(DIY) in 2019 to MUN. I made many friends here and met them in person in Canada.

Coming back to this group as a Citizen brings memories and nostalgic feelings..

Thank you, Nairaland, for the wonderful Journey... The support from those in the 2016-2019 set... some mainstays will still be here, and some may not.

Bros i can agree with you, i work 2 jobs and its like crazy.. nothing like free money or keep the change lol

hayor2014:
There is no truth to be told here, Canada is a place to work hard and hustle, else...you will SUFFER grin grin grin grin
on a serious note, you simply need a lot of research done, What do you and your partner wanna do when you get here ?
what qualifications do you have ?
what qualifications are accepted here for the job you intend to do ?
Are you willing to become a student again ?
Are there certifications you need to take..
On the short run, thing might be tough but you simply need to keep your eyes on the prize.
I advise friends to start writing their professional exams(CIA and CISA for Auditing) from naija ( a mistake i made), interestingly no one has listened to me so far, I am presently working part time and writing my exams also.
is it easy ?......HELL NO, but i have my eyes on the prize and will do whatever i need to to get the certifications.( 2 stages down....2 to go)

In summary, No 2 stories are the same, luck/destinies are different , the opportunities here are so much and they defy age, gender or religious barriers.
It all depends on you.

Apply for course BAsed MAsters, if you have money to pay your tuition yourself.. Most time the difficulties of securing supervisors in the Thesiis route is availability of grant.. If you can apply for COuse based Mscyou can switch to Thesis based.. That way potential supervisor already know you in person and can have confidence in puuting money towards you

eazyrely:
Good evening from the corner of my small room in Ogbomoso, Oyo state.
I just got my final result although I've been on the look out for supervisors as my intended course requires such but all to no avail.
My CGPA = 3.66
semester GPA for the last 2 sessions goes thus: (400: 4.82, 4.85), (500: 3.68, 3.86).
Course of study: ANIMAL PRODUCTION AND HEALTH
Intended course for Masters: ANIMAL SCIENCE
My questions goes thus:
1. Can my result fly for a masters degree or i go for graduate certificate?
2. Can i apply without getting a supervisor yet?
3. Since most schools i checked only need a letter from my school stating i was taught in English language, is there any reason for me to bother myself with IELTS or TOEFL?
4. which other schools apart from UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN, UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA, UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA can i apply to

thanks for your time

Hello Sir this is all shades of not nice
if i work for something and it comes out not what i expected i have every right to talk.. the gentle man that wrote that post is accurate.. i live in a place where i engage canadians and trust me they freaking complain a lot let alone me an immigrant.. the honest truth is Canada is shouldnt be compared to nigeria cos they arent on the same status quo.
Canada is expensive like it or not.. i live in a place i pay 15% HST on anything and minimum wage is 11.40$..there is no train and bus works from 6am to 6pm..

mbhs139:
It is really appalling when after people struggled so ahrd to get the PR status to Canada, they now bad mouth the country. It is very very absurd and a sign of ingratitude to God and the system.

People come here, especially Nigerians, to complain about so many things as if they were forced to come live here in the first place.

I mean, if where you're coming from is any better, if your Banana Island in Lagos, or Maitama in Abuja is devoid of any problem, why come to Canada in the first place?

You hear them complain of cold, complain of the primary and secondary system and be looking for Catholic School here and there. We have come again with our entitlement mentality to a foreign land.

If only you know how many desperate young and men women out there that are struggling desperately to be in this position. I mean, howhuh!!! How can anyone from Nigeria in particular be complaining here? Even if you earn millions monthly back home, you should have stayed back now and stop whining like a baby. Like I said, after some people have attained the PR status they want to now demistify it- making it look like it doesn't worth of afterall.

All the issues and problems that have raised here on this forum, we face more than all that, and if not worse, back home. Nobody told you they pick money on the tree in Canada nah! You have to work mehn! You have to wake as early as 5am, if need be, just like you in Lagos, and go to work, just like every Canadians do as well, and earn your pay cheque to pay your bills.

The good thing, as far as I'm concerned, is that you'll get value of every cent you spend. Unlike where I come from, where I pay 5k for NEPA every month and spend 15 to 20k on fuel for generator. Isn't that madness?

Please, we shouldn't complain abeg. If you're going through tough times, yes tough times are bound to happen, like I've been out of job for the past three weeks, let's simply cry out for help, period! Not castigating and making it look like it was a bad decision.

I do not regret moving away from home and experiencing a new life.

But I do regret choosing Canada over Europe (I did have the choice).

Here are a few things I am sure the responses, especially the ones from those who have ‘just’ moved here and likely wrote the comments in their ‘high’ of traveling do not cover.

1 - The cold is deadly - and no one wants to admit it.

2 - It is cold not only outside, Canadians like to burn extra fuel on airconditioning and to freeze their indoor areas too, both in summer and winter (and yes there are only two seasons in Canada). There is not one day all year around when you can do your errands without having to carry a jacket or, ever thinking of wearing a skirt like I like to do - because the moment you step inside buildings it’s FREEZING (unless you are exercising). Although, I must say people do not dress to the weather, and if you have an issue with the cold, you will be always objectified ‘omg! your wearing too much! are you cold?’

Look, winters are 8 months long here (Edit: when I say winter, I mean so long I need to wear knits, jackets, tooks and boots, if you go out with shorts in 10 degrees good for you, anything below 12 is winter to me and most people from mild climates). for at least 3 months, it’s below -15 (Edit: if anyone doubts this, they can track the weather and average temperature in various provinces, make sure you look at the ‘real feel’ value too. Unless you are in Windsor Ontario or BC, this is what it is, if not worse). You need a car. You need a really good home with proper heating, and still your social life is brought to minimum during those months. Now, let’s see what happens when you are a broke student who lives in the burbs and cannot even dream of having a car. I live downtown and it’s 15 min walk to my school (nice eh?) when it’s -40, I do mind having to walk 15 mins.

3 - It is super expensive. Rent goes up ridiculously every year. You could look it up if you wished, but I am half-certain hat Canadians pay the highest price for phone and internet services in the developed world. Other expenses are high too, compared to many countries - and it’s not like you get a top quality life for the expensive things you spend money on. I am talking about a single person who cooks their own meals, does not even drink and, does not spare money on anything other than necessities.

4 - Public transportation SUCKS BALLS. I know most people around the world like to talk about how punctual buses are in Canada because if they do not pick people up in a timely manner people could freeze. That’s an utter lie. And on top of that, the reach each of each city’s transportation system is very weak. Unless you live in the downtown area (which makes it easier just to walk or bike rather than having to wait for irregular buses for unknown periods of time) chances are you will have to spend 2+ hrs on transportation every day just to get to where you work or you go to school. Most of the cities do not have metro (subway) and again when they do, the beauty of it is only when you are in close distances to the core downtown. Otherwise metro will never get you to the inner cities, and you will have to switch to subsidiary buses that…again will get you to wait…and wait…and wait. Intercity transport is also awful, a monopoly and, expensive. I do not know if there are any countries left around the world wish such disconnected transport system - especially given how far apart everything is in North America.

Never mind internal flight prices. I don’t want to even start writing about Air Canada.

5 - Relationships are overrated, and talking about the ‘physiological need for sex’ is the centerpiece of reasoning for inquiring one. The dating scene is an absolute bogus mess, which comes down to women chasing men, hopes of sharing the rent, or otherwise being pointed at as ‘not getting enough sex’ and ‘not having a man’ ( sometimes I wonder if it is the 1800s and the age of getting wedded is 16). People move-in in a matter of days of knowing each other and move-out in a matter of a couple of months. By late 20s, anyone you meet has been through divorce(s) or separation(s), likely has kids, usually still ‘hangs out’ with their exes (you are likely to learn about the grisly truth only after you have invested yourself emotionally in an unworthy narcissist too hard). Every one you meet is bitter and cunning, only looking for another partner to suit their economic imbalances. People put up with cheating partners very often, and internalizing these standards, at least when you are super lonely, comes next. You’ll be surprised.

(I generally would not suggest a single person who is interested in dating to come here. If I ever do recommend Canada it’s to couples. If you have kids you will get to raise them in safe, ugly neighborhoods where they never play on the streets - I don’t know why? It’s safe, it’s super flat and begs for two gates and a soccer ball or hockey puck- and you will have to dump thousands and thousands of dollars on their daycare). I will not get into the cost of primary education. Not here.

Hello Guys
For those coming to Canada for a long time please don't be caught offguard like me.. tidy up lose ends especially banking,. if you intend to use your Nigerian banks make sure you have your atm, tokens and internet banking active.. if possible make sure you used a trusted family member as an additional signatory to your account should in case something is required of you .

--Secondly, be mentally prepared .. it is no joke.. the pictures and videos of Canada is sweet but it is not as rosy as they paint it especially in the beginning.. prepare yourself to study like you never... work like u never did ..The cold, your regular lifestyle you wont get here.. Be mentaly ready to eat food you aren't used to. see people you aren't used too.. etc

Success to all incoming TRV applicant and holders

I changed career because I studied Zoology in my undergraduate and now I'm going for MSc Boreal Ecosystems and Agricultural Sciences but I explained what spurred my passion for it and courses I took relevant to the area. I'm not employed as I'm currently still doing my NYSC and didnt submit any nysc stuff.

In term of family ties, I do not have any ties as all my siblings are in the USA and Canada as I'm just the only one left here, they are already citizens of those countries and I listed all of them in the family information without hiding anything. I only used my mom who wasn't even in Nigeria as ties and I said I ll be coming back home for my marriage and I talked about employment prospects as the ties too.

The most important thing is prayer and fasting and it was my mom that did all that. I give *God all the glory*. *He is a faithful God*. All thanks to my *father's in the Lord* who saw this vision coming through for me, Qudkom, Frankrobb, Justmellow,Blema111, sterlingwaterloo and to many others I can't mention.

omotayo333:
I think I’m probably the most silent observer here, only fair i share my experience.
Flight experience—-
I’m a single applicant so i travelled last week with just 3 check-in. Luggages (had to pay for the extra one), went with ethiopia airline a mistake I won’t make again (i had a 15 hrs flight from Addis Ababa to pearson airport). Well the flight was really tiring but the in-flight entertainment and food was decent (also with really pretty air hostesses)and i made sure to drink as much red and white wine I could helped me to sleep better.
Landing—-
So we arrived toronto in the morning, really great weather could see the sun was out already, went through immigration and I really spent time on the line (was actually a bit tipsy from the drinks i took so i left the airplane late) did the normal immigration process i had more than 10k with me so i had to declare it, i filled some forms was made to sign my landing document after I got my sin number and mailed it to my brother’s address in Etobicoke (this is not my first time in Canada been visiting every year since 2013). Took my luggages from the terminal (5) then gave the immigration officer my declaration card. I then ordered a lyft to take me to my brother’s apartment (note when you order an uber or a lyft make sure you go to terminal Q, its on the ground floor so take the nearest elevator downstairs because when you enter the arrival terminal you’re actually on the first floor).
Post Arrival—
So my brother was at work when i arrived( he told me where to get his keys from) settled in well took out all the foodstuffs i got and (i made sure to pack enough alomo and origin when coming it’s really pricey here). Luckily for me he cooked the day before so i microwaved my food had my bathe and took a nap. Wasn’t that jetlagged so I went to the nearest TD bank opened an account( the cross rate wasn’t that good but i had no choice, wasn’t comfortable carrying so much cash) went to the nearest lcbo to get liquor then i took a lyft to see a friend at Mississauga then went shopping at square one mall.

So far it’s been really great since my status now is a pr not a visitor I’m entitled to more benefits and opportunities. So I’m apartment and job hunting at the moment and just praying to God for the best.
