Nairaland General › For 2015 To Be Different by Slizbeat(op): 8:00am On Oct 10, 2012
NIGERIA is in its longest stretch of civil rule. The 13 years of uninterrupted civilian administration has expanded the yearning for more democratic space in politics and in the handling of our individual and group affairs.
These agitations have taken wings of their own and in some cases have resulted in conflicts. The impression being created that Nigeria’s democracy has not grown in 13 years is not true. It is possible that our expectations have outgrown democracy.
Spectacular growth has been witnessed in the number of political parties, more than 56, which has ballooned from the three that contested the elections in 1999. What has not changed is the responsibility of the politicians and the political parties to the electorate.
There has also been little democracy in the conduct of public office holders. They consider the people irrelevant and carry on as if they are masters, instead of the servants that they presented themselves as during the campaigns.
Political parties, in their wisdom, have no manifestos, hardly holdrallies to sell themselves to the people and the resources of the individual politician and his ability to hound others out of the way have become stronger instruments for accessing power than ideas that are canvassed and accepted by the people.
Nigerians suffer from beliefs in some quarters that democracy cannot protect their interests. inadequate attention to individual liberties enhances such beliefs. Policies that cause job losses, less access to information, illegal arrests and detentions, and other injustices, collide with personal liberties.
How would Nigeria be differentin 2015? Politicians stake their right to political positions with a conviction that renders the people irrelevant. One way they have demonstrated this is the absence of campaigns to make their programmes public. Another is increasing refusal to consider the public’s interests inpolicies.
Nigerians should stop complaining and hold politicians accountable. From legislators, at all levels to executives, politicians’ responsibility to the electorate, as enunciated in the Constitution, is a fair platform for the public to engage them. Desperation for power is a source of concern.
Impatience of politicians with constitutional processes remains alarming. They have no convictions about parties or their programmes. With months to the elections, some of them would be changing parties and the 56 choices.
The 2015 elections that are more than two years away should be different in defining growth of the democratic belief of Nigerians. Early efforts in strengthening the electoral procedures, the establishment of the centrality of ordinary Nigerians in the political process, would afford people opportunities for more active participation in politics without which there would be little difference in the realisation of our democratic expectations.

Nairaland General › Mubi Killings: Police Nab Alleged Masterminds by Slizbeat(op): 7:33am On Oct 10, 2012
By KINGSLEY OMONOBI
ABUJA—Following Police investigations into the killing of about 46 students of Federal Polytechnic Mubi in Adamawa State by alleged unknown gunmen or cultists last week, Vanguard can report authoritatively that the killings were perpetrated by an Islamic sect and that masterminds of the gruesome massacre were three students of the polytechnic and one student of the Adamawa State University, Yola.
Police sources in Abuja disclosed to Vanguard yesterday that 30 suspects had so far been arrested in connection with the massacre and among them are 12 confirmed members of Boko Haram and the four students who have also been confirmed to be members of the dreaded Islamic sect.
According to the source, during investigations, it was discovered that all the 46 students massacred were either the new leadership of the Students Union that were elected the previous week or those that voted to elect the new leadership of the union.
Vanguard was told that from investigations, the masterminds of the killings, belonged to the opposition during the election for the Student Union Government who had boasted that they cannot lose the election as there would be consequences if they didn’t win, a threat that was waved aside by the generality of the students.
When the results were eventually announced and the opposition lost, the three students who are also members of Boko Haram, got in touch with their members for a revenge mission that was timed to occur in the night when all the union leaders as well as their supporters would be in their hostel. The murder was largely successful because the killers knew the names, abode, movement and whereabouts of their fellow students. Asked if there was a hint of ethnic cleansing in the killings, the source said it was purely election issues and that both Christians and Muslims were killed.

On what will become of the arrested culprits and other suspects, the source said that as soon as investigations were completed, they will be charged to court to face appropriate penalties.
Meanwhile, Vanguard has also gathered that the two Policemen killed in Kano yesterday and whose rifles were taken away by alleged unknown gunmen, were killed in an ambush.
Police sources disclosed that the two officers had been detailed to provide security for personnel of the ministry of health who were carrying out polio vaccination on children in the state and that while they were at a location, they received a distress call that robbery was going on somewhere.
They (Policemen) promptly moved to the scene described in the distress call. On getting there, and finding out that no such robbery took place, they were on their way back to the polio vaccination centre when the gunmen ambushed and shot them before making away with their rifles.
It was further gathered that the Inspector General of Police has directed the Kano State Police Command to go all out for the killers of the policemen while all other policemen in the state are to become very vigilant to avoid being caught unawares.

Politics › Jonathan Pledges 17.6bn To Floods Victims by Slizbeat(op): 11:13am On Oct 09, 2012
ABUJA (AFP) - President Goodluck Jonathan has pledged $110 million to mitigate the damage caused by “unprecedented” floods, in a special message to the country broadcast early Tuesday.
The flooding caused by heavy seasonal rainfall has impacted states across the country, with the Red Cross saying last week that at least 148 people have been killed and 64,000 displaced.
“Unprecedented floods have ravaged many parts of our country rendering tens of thousands of Nigerians homeless and causing massive destruction of property farmland and infrastructure,” Jonathan said in the broadcast.
He then promised 17.6 billion naira ($110 million, 85 million euros) to address the situation, with most of the funds going to the affected state governments.
He said he planned to personally visit some of the flooded areas.
The Red Cross last week issued an emergency funding appeal to procure urgently needed relief materials, including temporary shelter, also warning of the heightened risk that water-borne diseases like cholera could spread.
The rainy season in Nigeria runs roughly from March to September.
Jonathan’s office issued a statement late Monday instructing all news channels to carry the 7:00 am (0600 GMT) address.

Nairaland General › Justice Must Be Done For Once In Nigeria. by Slizbeat(op): 11:38am On Oct 08, 2012
The recent gruesome murder of four uniport students by youths of Aluu community in Rivers state has really put many Nigerians including myself into justice outcry. An eye 4 an eye makes the world go blind, jungle justice and Mob attacks also causes same. In Nigeria's part, we do take laws into our hands without even a trial. Those boys may or may not be thieves but even a robber should be given a trial. Yes, we shouldnt take a life we can not give but atleast if they were beaten not till death, it would have been much more better than allowing them go through such pains and yet death and even burnt. This inhumane attitude potrayed by the people of aluu is what i term "human massacare". As nairaland is the № 1 forum in Nigeria and whatever happens here would definately be viewed by the Nigerian Governments and the world at large, let us utilize this medium to let them know that for once we are not happy, that we are devastated by this incident and we will follow it until justice would be done and not sweeping it under the carpets. If you agree that justice must be done, comment with the words "JUSTICE MUST BE DONE" before an additional outcry if Any. As for Me, "A BI.......G JUSTICE MUST BE DONE"

Nairaland General › You Could Be The One To Save Nigeria by Slizbeat(op): 1:24pm On Oct 06, 2012
It seems We Nigerians have not yet understand that our country is suffering from bad amalgamation and short colonial period. As an example, i will explain. A patient with HIV/AIDS is surely going to die buh realising the +ve status in time would make one concious and last a longer while, say 10years from early check up at maximum, buh such a person can only be healed through prayers and the sickness eliminated totally since the virus doesnt have a cure buh has a sustaining drugs. Now take 9ja 4 example being infested with AIDS, We knew it long enough 6years after independence(during the civil war) buh some individuals failed to listen and thus argued it that it is not HIV +VE buh -VE and hence we continued to live with the virus. We(A few section though) had nurtured that belief and diagnosis and has been giving her drugs since 70'(we used 3yrz to argue on it, thats 67'-70') till date and yet they are still being neglected and criticized. Now the fact is that 9ja will surely break up one day, EXCEPT if and only if we decide to resort to God through prayers that he should eliminate the virus so that it wouldnt bring Nigeria to an end. I would have loved it if the federal government would recommended a general prayer day for the entire nation buh due to the fact that we dont share the same religious views as some are Christians, some Muslims, some Atheist. Buh all the same, we should all bury the past and walk in the light of the future. There is no such thing as "Unite and fight a Common enemy" being a tribe or the other, NO. The common enemy we have here is "DISUNITY" which gave birth to so many Vices with Corruption and bad leadership Elongation[CABLE] as the first son. If we can defeat "DISUNITY", then the children of it would bow and hide their faces in shame. As they say, two heads are better than one, So in otherwords, Two united tribes(or more) are better than a disunited country.
Feel free to quote me wrong if you have to or feel free to add yours. If we could start from Nairaland here, i believe we will conquer in no time. Create unity groups or join the present day NAGG(National Advocate for Good Governance), it could begin with you.

Nairaland General › Flood Ravages Bayelsa Communities by Slizbeat(op): 4:15am On Oct 06, 2012
By Samuel Oyadongha
First it was considered to be an isolated issue limited to settlements in the upper River Niger given the fact that flooding is a perennial occurrence in the lower River Niger.

But the event of the last couple of weeks has turned out to be a traumatic experience for the communities in this lower Niger spanning several communities in central and western senatorial district, of Bayelsa State. The number of communities that have been taken over by flood lately has been a source of grave concern to the natives.

Virtually all the communities along the river bank such as Sagbama, Adagbabiri, Peretorugbene, Agbere, Ofoni, Ayamasa, Sabagriea, Igbedi, Famgbe, Yenaka, Ogu, Fortorugbene, Agbura, Aguadama-Epetiama, Oporoma, Ndoro, Tombia, Peremabiri, Elemebiri, Asamabiri, Angalabiri, Opokuma, Odi, Kaiama, Biseni, Gbarantoru, Tombia Amassoma and Ekeremor among others have been were submerged.

In some of these communities, residential and public buildings including schools, banks, churches, town halls have been overtaken by flood leaving thousands of families homeless with their means of livelihood destroyed.

Sadly, indigenes of some of the few unaffected communities  are now living in fear as the rampaging flood appeared to have defied some of the artificial barriers put in place in these communities to mitigate it.

Also the recent warning that communities in the Delta should expect more flood in the days ahead has heightened anxiety in the area where hundreds of thousands have been sent on exile due to no fault of theirs by nature.

The situation to say the least has assumed crisis proportion in this predominantly swampy state where reptiles and other aquatic lives have noticeably taken over structures whose inhabitants are currently searching for shelter elsewhere.

Investigations in some of the riverine settlements such as Sagbama, Kolokuma-Opokuma, Yenagoa, Ogbia and Southern showed that a greater percentage of the riverside communities have been sacked by the rampaging flood.

In Sagbama community, not less than 2000 houses have been submerged as the indigenes were forced to join their relations in neighbouring Patani in Delta State . Patani community which over years had survived perennial flooding associated with communities in the lower river Niger ostensibly due to its shore protection embankment erected in the early nineties was at the verge of succumbing to the rampaging Forcados River. If this relatively upland Ijaw settlement eventually goes down as now being threatened by the flood, it then means the entire Bayelsa communities in the lowland stretch of the River Niger and tributaries of Forcados and Nun and its adjoining creeks would not be spared.

Already, all the public and private schools in Sagbama have been sacked by the swelling flood while the road connecting neighbouring Tungbo community had been cut off. Also the community old road along the bank of the river leading to the community market has been washed away by the rising flood.

An indigene of Sagbama, Mr. Ogbo Akpoeyi, who conducted Saturday Vanguard round the submerged area in a dug out canoe expressed fear of possible outbreak of epidemic in the area following the contamination of the community source of drinking water by exposed human waste.

“This is the worst flooding we have ever experienced in almost 50 years. The last time we had this type of ugly incident was in 1969. Sincerely, if not that it was clearly stated in the Bible that God would not destroy the earth with flood again one would have concluded that the end has come,” he said.

“Look at the entire Mile I community is under water,” he lamented, pointing at the deserted homes, he pleaded with the authorities to find a lasting solution to the flood menace wondering how long they would continue to suffer and passing the night under such harsh condition.

Another native who gave her names as Adonkia Nurse told Saturday Vanguard that her bakery business had been crippled by the flood. “Blessed Bayelsa Bakery had since closed shop with machines worth millions of naira lost to the flood,” she lamented.

For Ebiere Adou, who refused to relocate from her submerged home, she said, “it is not as if I enjoy the situation here, there is little I can do. I need to remain here and safeguard my properties. Leaving this house means exposing my belongings to hoodlums now roaming the community in search of homes to loot because of the absence of such house owners.”

She added, “several persons have lost their properties not to the flood but to some unscrupulous youths masquerading as concerned community folks assisting distressed families to evacuate their belonging to dry area only to disappear into the forest with such items.”

“This is really a nightmare that will forever remain with me. Imagine me that was living in a comfortable apartment now forced to take refuge in an uncompleted two storey building about 100 metres away from my original abode because I have no relation in the state capital and no where to go.

It is my fervent prayer that the water level recede fast so that we can go back to our homes,” another concerned settler lamented.

Also, mobile policeman who spoke anonymously said he was forced to relocate to an uncompleted duplex for the time being until the flood ebbed.

The situation was not different at Adagbabiri, Odi, Tungbo, Tombia, Gbarantoru, Amassoma and others visited. At Imiringi in Ogbia, the bridge crossing the Kolo Creek was on the verge of being swept away while a classroom block at Tombia town located on the bank of the Nun River had collapsed
Thousands of families displaced are now exposed to the outbreak of epidemic looms in the affected communities.

The paramount ruler of Odi Kingdom, King Shine Apere, expressed concern over the plight of his people and called for urgent action before the entire community is swept away.

Mr. Seyeifa Uzaka whose Sabagriea community is over run by the over flowing Nun River noted with concern the devastating impact of the flood on his people.

“The economic frustration and loss of property in submerged communities and farmlands is one of the major source of anguish and despair in the area,” he lamented adding “As you can see, “our people are now racing against time trying to see what they could salvage from their already submerged farmlands.”

Reacting to the scenario in the state, an environmentalist, Comrade Alagoa Morris attributed the perennial scourge to the natural environment of the state.

“Bayelsa is the typical example of what a delta is, very flat with mot communities below sea level,” he said and called for dredging, sand filling and construction of shoreline protection for the communities to tackle to the perennial problem.

He also called on the management of Niger Delta Development Commission NDCC and the National EmergencyManagement Agency NEMA to intervene to mitigate the plight of the people of the impacted communities.

Though a high powered delegation led by the state Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Sylvanus Abila had been on a tour of flooded communities to ascertain the extent of disaster, Governor Seriake Dickson who returned to the state Sunday after nearly three weeks stay abroad to woo investors Tuesday left behind his busy schedule to embark on an on -the -spot assessment of the affected communities to see things for himself.

The governor whose Toru-Orua hometown is also affected by the flood sympathized with the various impacted communities stating that his administration was doing all it can to fast track development in the state.

The governor had earlier directed the Deputy Governor to ensure the release of relief materials to the affected communities to cushion the hardship being experienced by the people.

According to him, this issue of flooding is not peculiar to Bayelsa State as it is a global phenomenon caused mainly by global warming and other issues related to the environment. ”You will recall that our government took early steps to address the issue of blocked drainages in Yenagoa and that was why we did not experience any form of flooding in Yenagoa metropolis.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Emergency and Relief Matters, Mrs. Faith Opuene also described this year’s flood as most unfortunate.

She said government had established a relief camp at Sagbama town and working out modalities to set up some in other areas while Odi community had also set up a makeshift camp to accommodate the displaced families.

“There is a relief camp in Sagbama. Others are ongoing. Foodstuffs, drugs and mattresses, blankets and buckets have been distributed to victims. These items will make them manage the situations.

“It is the worst that I have seen so far. People are really suffering, farmlands are destroyed. We don’t know what will happen to us next year, there will be starvation in the state as the whole Bayelsa State is covered with flood, apart from Brass and Nembe local governments. Every community is flooded.

All the six local governments are affected. Yenagoa, Sagbama, Ekeremor, Kolokuma/Opokuma and Ogbia, Southern Ijaw local governments are flooded. As a state we are trying to do the little we can,” she said.

Nairaland General › Lagos State: Victims Count Loses by Slizbeat(op): 3:53am On Oct 06, 2012
BY EBUN SESSOU
In Lagos, rainfall is rather becoming a curse rather than a blessing with the loss of lives and properties as a result of heavy downpour, storm and flood.

Recently, the city of Lagos experienced another flood  tragedy that left many people homeless.

Some of the victims were speechless as they did not know what the future  would unfold.

One of the victims of the recent flood in Lagos was Pastor Akinolu who lives in a new site of the low cost housing  estate Oke afa area of Lagos.

When Saturday Vanguard visited him, the mood was enough to tell what the family has been going through since the incident occurred.
Explaining how the tragedy besieged his household, he said, “I went for all night prayer when I received a call from my wife. She was unable to relate the incident to me properly. So, when I got back home, I saw that the whole compound was flooded.

“It is not too long that we packed to this place. I don’t know why, I should be experiencing this tragedy now.

“I have not recovered from a particular flooding I encountered last year and this one is coming at this time”, he lamented.

Another victim was Mohammed Soneye who sustained severe  injury as a result of the rainstorm. As the storm raged, an uncompleted building fell on him while sleeping.

A neighbour, Adebayo, who explained to Saturday Vanguard how the tragedy occurred, said: “About 1.15am, Mohammed’s brother, Mr. Akeem raised the alarm that we should help rescue his brother.

We rushed to his apartment, but unfortunately, he was soaked in his blood. It took time before he could be removed from the debris, and by the time he was removed, he was severely injured.”

Continuing, the neighbour added that, “he stays in the boys’ quarter of the main building and was fast asleep when the building collapsed.

“I was sleeping in my house, which is opposite their apartment, when a call came in that the building had collapsed on him and I should come and assist. I quickly rushed to the scene, but he was badly injured,” he lamented.

For  hours, many areas in Lagos experienced torrential rainfall that left untold hardship on the people due to bad city planning. It left the affected areas submerged in flood.

In Lagos, the whole of the state tasted the bitter pill, as areas like Arowojobe and Akinwunmi estates in Maryland, parts of Ikeja GRA, Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Victoria Garden City (VGC), Ibeju-Lekki, Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road, Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, Yaba, Surulere, Gbagada, Oworonshoki, Mafoluku-Oshodi, Iyana-Ejigbo, Isheri-Osun, Berger-Alagbole Road, Ajegunle, Ikorodu Road, Ogijo and Odogunyan, were all affected.

Commuters were forced to return home after waiting in various  motor parks in vain for commercial vehicles that never came.

Areas that seemed worst hit by the traffic gridlock were the mainland areas, such as Ogba, Ikeja, Orile-Agege, Alagbado, Iyana-Ipaja, Ipaja, Ayobo, Moshalashi, AIT Road, Kollington, Oke-Odo and Ahmadiyya. Between Ahmadiyya and Ijaiye on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, a portion of the road collapsed, leaving commuters stranded.

It was, however, another opportunity for commercial bus operators and motorcyclists, popularly referred to as Okada, to make more money as they inflated transport fares.

In places like Alagbado, Orile-Agege and communities along the old toll gate at Sango-Ota, the volume of  the  flood was very high. In some places the flood was said to have reached rooftops of bungalow structures. People had to evacuate their residence for safety. Many residents could not sleep in their houses as the whole place had been taken over by rain flood. Possessions were lost to the floods, while some residents resorted to bailing out the flood water.

A lot of Lagosians had stories to tell on their experiences with the rainstorm and the flood.

An occupant of the building where Mohammed lives, Bimpe Irepo, stated that she would had been a victim of the incident if she had not attended an all-night prayer. “I stay upstairs and my room was affected. The collapsed wall fell onto our bedroom and our kitchen. I thank God that I heeded my wife’s call to attend our church’s vigil in Ebute-Meta. Maybe, we would have been dead by now.

“My eight months old pregnant sister, Bosede, who slept in the sitting room when the incident happened, is currently in shock and has been put on bed rest because of this incident.”

It was also learnt that no fewer than three persons were feared dead in different parts of the state because of the floods.

“The flood destroyed property worth several millions of naira in our area and many residents have so far been rendered homeless.”

A landlord in the area, Sunday Adewale, narrated how his family slept outside after the disaster. Also, a trader, who identified herself as Aderemi, said she lost goods worth N60,000 in the flood. “In spite of the flood and the losses, I am still grateful to God for saving my life,” she said.

In Ejigbo area, Omotayo said her family kept vigil when they saw the impact of the rain. “The rain was so serious; the wind was scary. I had to gather my children together at about 2.00am after I heard the sound of the wall collapsing. Luckily, no one was hurt, but one of  my neighbours had his car badly damaged by the wall, which fell,” she told.

They say "A JOURNEY OF A THOUSAND MILES BEGINS WITH A STEP" What took America over 200 years to attain naim lagos want attain in less than 100yrs. Well its gud to learn fast buh d fact remains that it will crumble soonest. If they feel its a gud policy and does not contravens any part of the constitution, then they should carry it out at their own risk afterall it does not affect private jet and helicopter owners like me. cheesy

Nairaland General › Flood Threatens To Submerge Niger Bridge by Slizbeat(op): 1:34pm On Oct 02, 2012
Asaba—MEMBER representing Aniocha/Oshimili federal constituency, Mr. Ndudi Elumelu, has called on the Federal Government to urgently save the South-East from being cut off as the ravaging flood from the River Niger was almost submerging the entry point to Niger Bridge.

Speaking, yesterday, when he undertook an assessment of the flooded areas, he said: “What I have just seen on ground is disheartening. Benin-Asaba highway will soon be submerged, and if the road is submerged, it means that the whole of the South-East will be cut-off. So the Federal Government and Ministry of Works need to take urgent measures to save the situation.
“They should not wait for a repeat of what happened to Lokoja-Abuja Road. The threat is real, when you consider that Immigration office has been submerged. The workers there can’t even access their offices and communities that are close to this place have been wiped out. I believe that it is high time the Federal Government came to our aid. This is beyond the state government.”
