Fkhalifa: The Frankfurt i saw against Chelsea last season were hard, pacy and energetic, Our midfield will be brushed aside, Saka is good but looks a bit frail. Why are our players so lightweight and smallish sef Chelsea's look strong and sharp... I miss the days of Gilberto, Viera,Song ,Baptists and even Diaby 1. I want Martinez to get some playing time to gather confidence. As our main back up to Leno, he needs to start giving him a fight. This is his last season with us to prove himself. 2. I am really in for Chambers and Holding to replace those experienced clowns we call CBs. So here is a chance to have a peep at their hopeful partnership. 3. Nelson and Willock have not been really given a chance to explore themselves. I am willing to give it to them. 4. Saka and Smith-Rowe come with a lot of promise. They say Rowe is like Ramsey, while Saka is a home grown winger. I also know he is very good at taking on defenders despite his age. We need to give these black dribblers chance before someone else does. Generally, I have little hopes for the Frankfurt game and wouldn't mind using it to try out new players having been fed up with the current crop. |

solomonbrown64: ... You do realize that in all their UEL games last season, no team defeated Frankfurt in their home. If Emery puts out this line up then I will reconsider if he actually wants his job anymore. We will be beaten without Mercy with that line up. First competitive match for Holding and Smith and even Saka for the season and you want them to start in an away match? Lol... Spy, are you sure you like the coach at all? Firstly I am hugely disappointed in the players that have represented us since the start of the season and wouldn't mind fresh legs to try out at least. Secondly, if it's a given that we lose tonight against the Germans, why waste resources and expose our best players like Aubameyang to injuries. Thirdly, as tough as this game is, it's still 3points (as Roland17) will say. There are 5 other games where we can comfortably earn at least 12points to go through. |

It's Frankfurt, the toughest match of the group stage. So we expect Emery to field a relatively strong starting line up. But also since it's the first game, some fresh legs will be tested. I suspect it's going to be a 4-3-3.

solomonbrown64: ... Fans are complaining about our boring play so they will likely go full throttle if Emery goes for the back three now. Besides it doesn't matter where Niles is placed, if he keeps forgetting himself on the field of play, he is a liability.
... Kieran should be available after the United match and should be ready to start after the international break. Bellerin is really rusty so I don't expect to see him until the end of October at least. I feel with our full backs back and a stabilized defence, the Midfield will be better as they won't be trying to protect the wings because of our current full backs and Emery will be free to go full attacking mode. The horrible defense has been holding him back hence his cautious approach. At least, that's what I want to believe. Playing three at the back suits this current crop. At least we get cover at the back and more bodies in midfield. It's the attack that will suffer, but then Laca is injured and we should give less work to Auba. ……..…. Auba …….. solomonbrown64: .... Oh yes. Definitely. Not sure about Chambers and Holding pairing but certain of those full backs. I have run out of patience with Kola and his brother in crime. I really don't who is worse between Santos and Niles. Both Kola and Niles are suited to a back three where as wingbacks they have less defensive and more offensive duties. But Emery won't see this. |

Roland17: Baba, Chambers did not put a foot wrong against Newcastle and after watching 4 games of those 2 senior clowns, Emery has to be pragmatic and ring up some changes at the back. Listen, teams are in the EPL for a reason and that is why when folks undermine other teams by calling them smaller teams I laugh because it exposes their lack of knowledge of what it means to be in a competition. This is why I take the season game by game, instead of looking forward to playing the "bigger teams'" as if you get 6 points for winning the bigger teams.
Every team in the EPL has earned its right to be there and have a lot to prove to themselves, their fans and owners consequently, no one is going to lay down for you to walk over. These guys are professionals, they train just as hard, if not harder, so if Chambers plays well against Newcastle, it should never be about the opponent being a smaller team but about Chambers's performance on that day. A good coach will build from that foundation especially if you consider the kid had a terrific season last year.
I am not saying Chambers is the 2nd coming of F. Baresi but he can not be worse than those 2 senior clowns, can he? There is so much anticipation for the return of R. Holding and this is not because Holding's return will solve all our defensive problems but it gives us another option to look at, something different with hopes it works out. I have maintained my stance about Niles, the kid's biggest problem is his lack of concentration. It almost feels like he is reminiscing an event that occurred in his life while he is playing. But make I ask, what do we expect Niles to learn from our defenders? He has not had any worthy senior player to learn from since he made the first 11. He played alongside Mustafi, Kos, Sok and now Luiz. Abeg wetin those guys wan teach Niles if not to become a worse clown in the making? I like that you're being cautious. We shouldn't expect too much from these young boys so that they won't cave in under pressure. Chambers had a decent game Vs Newcastle, it should only be natural to have allowed him continue so as to develop his confidence and match reading abilities. He is calm enough to make quality decisions, I also know he understands he is no Franco Baresi so he would just keep things simple knowing that any mistakes and he is off to the guillotine. Rob is our major hope of a decent defender. Before his injuries, he showed signs of a strong budding centre back of the Tony Adams mould. I wouldn't want us to expect much from him also. But here lies our hopes for this season. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Arsenal Fans Thread: The Red & White Army: 2025/2026 EPL Champions! by Spy360(m): 2:55pm On Sep 17, 2019 |
solomonbrown64: ..... Chambers impressed but I felt it was against a lower opposition who didn't really come out to play compared to Burnley and Liverpool. Luiz on his day is a better defender and let's be honest Liverpool's penalty is a very debatable. I am not defending Luiz but he did really well against a rampaging Watford and blocked a few inbound shots on goal, that penalty just messed up his game. If there's a defender we should drop now, it has to be Sokratis. He hasn't been his best lately. Between Luis and Sokratis, I will drop the latter.
.... Very importantly, Chambers was Fulham's player of the season as a midfielder and not a centre back. But Luiz and Papa have been very poor especially the latter so it won't hurt to try Chambers on Thursday. If he does well, I trust Emery to do his job but Chambers won't solve all our defensive issues, our full backs and porous midfield need some serious work. Nothing we can do presently about the first problem but plenty about the second. Definitely Socratis is the worse, but we all knew this. We thought Luiz was going to bring some leadership and stability. But he is also erratic. Let's try Chambers. I think Rob Holding should be ready too. Possibly eased in gradually until he stakes his rightful place in that dead defence. I see a back four of Tierney, Holding, Chambers and Bellerin before season winds up. |

Roland17: Does Emery realize he is not only fighting to keep his job at Arsenal but his future and marketability as a head coach in any of Europe's top teams? The projections for his future if his contract at Arsenal is not renewed is bleak, especially if we argue from narratives created after his success at Sevilla. At this point, it is fair to argue that his teams' post Sevilla choke, can not defend and he lacks the managerial skills to manage players with big personalities. These issues were his undoing at PSG and they are rearing their ugly heads with us.
I would like to give the #EmeryOut gang, spearheaded by iPopAlomo, Kokaneprodigy and now Sod09 a lot of credit because they were vehemently against Emery's signing because of some of the issues I highlighted above but I did the opposite by arguing for his signature as against the appointment of M. Arteta. I made it clear that I will give him a benefit of a doubt until this season but the man is not helping with some of his stupid decisions. We have not played anything exciting since the end of last season and this season has been worse and difficult to watch from a fan standpoint. This lack of identity is a product constant tinkering of formation, player selection, bad tactics, bad substitutions which ironically used to be his biggest strength and weapon. Don't get it twisted, we may not have the perfect squad but we sure have the squad to win the last 2 games. This is not a Europa League squad anymore and it all boils down to the coach.
Since his appointment, Emery has been stubborn about playing from the back even though it is evident that we not only lack the players to execute that strategy but more importantly, the current players lack the confidence to carry it out. You would think a smart coach will rethink that strategy after consecutive mistakes before the goal was scored, no, he continued to force the play and we were punished. The 2 senior clowns at the back need some benching and serious competition, I am an advocate of Chambers getting a start next week against Aston Villa because the kid played very well against Newcastle and he can not be worse than those aged clowns.
Emery does not have time, he was not hired by Edu and I know Edu is definitely keeping close tabs and already has options should Emery be fired. I recall stating that Chambers should continue in the starting line up after he impressed against Newcastle, I think it was solomonbrown who insisted Luiz should start. When players get the feeling that the positions are not under threat, they misbehave and make rash decisions. Look at Luiz, so suspect of causing penalties which everyone now knows. Same goes to Xhaka. Emery should drop these lots to the bench and see if they won't become more careful with their decisions. |

solomonbrown64: ..... Baba, Nelson is all hype jare. He is not ready for anything, even Saka would have fared better. I prefer Gabriel on that wing until we find a better option. Chelsea's academy products are far better than ours and need no hyping. We just hype our own to match theirs.
.... We are playing Frankfurt away so I don't think we will see much changes except in defense. One of Luiz or Papa should sit this out and Emery should use the opportunity to put out a Midfield that will work well in order to build familiarity. Constant Changing won't help him. Use a midfield on Thursday that he will use on Sunday. Emery was uncharacteristically not himself yesterday so Il will just put yesterday as an off day at the office. But Nelson is the only other winger we've got apart from Gabriel. I do not rate him, but I have hopes for him. Prayerfully sha. Emery needs to try Chambers in that Xhaka role. Miracles can happen and we may forget Xhaka. As for Emery himself, I would give him till end of season, as a benefit of doubt. |

solomonbrown64: ....... I honestly don't know what's happening to Emery right now, I feel he is lacking options in so many places and not enough cards to change something that's not working. He also tried too hard to fix things yesterday albeit with the wrong tools. He would never have brought in Nelson or started that nonsense formation I couldn't even place yesterday in the first place if Iwobi was still in the team. I said the other day that selling that dude with no proper replacement especially for a team like ours was stupidity but I was tagged a hypocrite by all knowing people here.
... There's no balance on the wings at all and our few Midfielders are tasked to support the full backs leaving massive holes in the Midfield. It doesn't also help that we don't have a proper destroyer there with ball playing skills. We need a Rodri or Fabinho or Partey or whatever his name is as quickly as possible. Pepe barely tracked back yesterday despite the fact that Niles was being given torture that would last him for life. Teams now know that all they have to do is attack our right side, as Niles is not a defender and no one will help him. The other wing too was just as bad, no cover so the midfielders were all over the place forming activity.
.... Pepe has to be spoken to and we have to field in Gabriel or Saka if need be on the left wing, and they must be instructed to track back. Nelson has been awful, completely awful. There has to be balance and a coordination among everyone to press and cover each other. This coordination is not there yet because of egos and a lack of balance currently. Ozil pressed in the first half and couldn't even bother in the second. Nelson will lose the ball and would be seen jogging back like he is Messi or something. I couldn't believe what I saw yesterday; our players just falling down and pushed here and there. I said the other day, this is the worst midfield I have seen at Arsenal since I started following the team. Absolute garbage and the Coach isn't helping matters with that either..
.... The playing from the back is not properly done in my opinion. Passing in the box is too dangerous especially with the new rule; I believe Leno is good enough to distribute to the full backs from his position since sending it over will just give the ball to the opposition as we lack a tall holdup player. I perfectly understand why Emery does it but he is not doing it right especially with how the players are spaced out. I complained about it the other day in one of the training videos.
.... Let's see what he does on Thursday since the man clearly favours Europa League over Premier League, something that might be his undoing. I want to see Chambers and Papa or Luiz, Both Chambers and Luiz can actually use the ball well and Gabriel on the wings with a proper midfield of two 8s and one 6. I will still wait until both our fullbacks are back and till Mid season before passing judgement. Knowing how weak the midfield had become, all he needed to do was to stuff it with one more player. That's taking off Ozil for Torriera. Then once things stabilise, take of Guendouzi for Nelson to add bite and direction to counter attack. Taking off Ceballos for Willock was suicidal. There was no purpose tactically to that change. On Thursday, I hope to see Martinelli, SmithRowe, Chambers and full games for Nelson and Willock hoping that more games for the latter duo could make them catch some sense. |

.... The back four picks itself naturally
... We are going away so Emery will be very cautious especially since we have lost a game changer in Lacazette. Xhaka is not injured so I expect him to start, Guendouzi cannot be dropped now, so the next candidate there will be Willock. Torreira is still not fully fit.
.... It's an away game so I doubt if Emery will start Nelson or Gabriel. I expect Ceballos to replace Lacazette in the front three. He started on the wings against Spain, so it's not an unknown territory for him.
