CultureRe: Ndigbo:which Other Igbo Dialect Do You Love And Want To Learn? by StarFlux: 1:44am On Jan 17, 2013
odumchi: Flavour speaks a dialect from somewhere in Enugwu and not Onicha. Most Enugwu dialects say "ife" while a minority say "ihe". For example, to say "I don't know", Flavour would say "amahu m", whereas an Onicha speaker would say "amaro m".

Today's Standard Igbo is closest to the Igbo spoken in the Orlu-Okigwe-Umuahia axis of Imo and Abia states, even though Onicha dialect is said to be the most intelligible of the Igbo dialects.
I see! Thank you smiley

The croco is dead, you can read the entire story here: http://www.animalsaustralia.org/features/amazing-croc-story.php
He died of natural causes.

I hope the people who jumped on the "he's already dead" bandwagon realize who stupid it is to spit out nonsense.

My reply was based around a saying. It also is mostly true.

Notorious is a bit extreme don't you think? Anyway, if I was partly wrong, then no problem at all. Glad to learn new things!

Yeah, I've listened to it over 20 times today!

Just a Q. How does the standard Igbo used in books etc compare to Onitsha dialect? What dialect is it closest to?

CultureRe: WHY DID YOUR PEOPLE SELL SLAVES TO WHITES? by StarFlux: 8:35pm On Jan 16, 2013
Blyss: Well actually the Benin Kingdom was a notorious source of slaves for the Europeans. It wasn't till the Atlantic Slave trade that the Kingdom actually obtained it's most substantial level of wealth and power with in it's whole 1000 year history.
Interesting, but that's not what I've heard.

I know there was slave trade in area, but don't think the Oba and his chiefs actually willingly engaged in such. Of course they couldn't control such a vast area. I really don't think slave trade had anything to do with Benin's wealth. There was a lot of trading going on, but not in slaves. Though I'm open for being corrected.

Don't understand the hate.

If the man saved this crocodile, and provides for it, then that is his choice. I don't see how that is "madness", or "crazy".

CultureRe: WHY DID YOUR PEOPLE SELL SLAVES TO WHITES? by StarFlux: 6:21pm On Jan 16, 2013
Somalia9 not knowing his history as always. I do wonder why you aren't banned yet.

Many refused to sell slaves, but I don't expect someone as yourself to know this. I have heard it before, but don't quite remember it in Edo, but there was a saying something similar to this: "what kind of deprivation will make an Edo chief sell his slaves". So Edo people wouldn't even sell slaves which they had captured in war, yet alone their own people. And there are many more who refused.

As amusing as it may be for you, Somalia9, the trolling isn't very funny. Especially for some that may not understand what you're doing, and ends up wasting time on you.

Interesting. I know youths are losing fluency, but Igbo going extinct by 2025? Don't think that's possible. The language is huge and has like 20 million speakers.
CultureRe: Can you translate this Colours In Your Language? by StarFlux:
Hmm, interesting. Many people don't know the colors?

From what I know in Yoruba:

Afam4eva: I've really been fascinated at your knack for the Yoruba language despite not being a native. Have you even made any effort to learn your own language? And don't you think your kids deserve the right to learn their own language? Not that there's anything wrong with teaching them Yoruba but shouldn't that be after teaching them their own language?
I said: "which they will learn anyway".

I like Yoruba, and a part of my family speaks it too. Though mostly as a secondary language.
CultureRe: The Conquest of Nigeria: What Went Wrong? by StarFlux: 11:49pm On Jan 14, 2013
ezeagu: Yeah, Africans let them set up trading posts, awed by their mirror and Western clothing like the Madras they imported. The Europeans were acting like equals to Africans until they studied them and went for the kill.

Look at Portugese men bowing to the king od Loango. Now Angola is an ex-Portuguese territory.

https://wysinger.homestead.com/Loango878.jpg
The Portuguese were probably one of the less destroying nations when it comes to colonalization. The Portuguese traded fairly with Benin Kingdom as far as I know, it didn't go down until the British decided to burn it into the ground. But hey, I guess greed would've gotten to them sooner or later anyway, if it weren't for the British. But the Portuguese were in my book, less harmful if you can put it that way, than most other colonization powers. Though, I could be wrong cheesy
CultureRe: Are Our Traditions Really Sblime? by StarFlux: 11:42pm On Jan 14, 2013
So you think our traditions are inferior? Silly thinking.

The west has a tradition of conquering & destroying, you think that is a good thing? There are many great things about African traditions. Many have moved away from the traditional religions, but there is more to tradition than just religion. Dance, music and language! Just like there's more to western tradiiton than just conquering and destroying.

If you don't like your traditions, then no one is forcing you to keep them, but don't come running back when you're without identity.
CultureRe: How Often Do You Speak Your Native Language At Home? by StarFlux: 11:34pm On Jan 14, 2013
modestdude: Abum odenigbo, osunigbo, na ogunigbo (writes igbo, speaks igbo and reads igbo). We speak igbo at home and i don't mean engligbo. So whenever i have my own kids am not gonna teach them english by speaking it to them. They should learn it in school and never to speak it at home unless with a visitor (seldomly)
This is the kind of attitude attitude Africa needs. When I get kids, I will most likely be teaching them Yoruba, even though it's not my native tongue, which they will learn anyway. A language is one of the best gifts you can give a child.

Never got to learn my father's language, so I will not do the same whenever I get kids.

I know a lot of people are unable to write their languages using proper ortography, especially tones. Maybe there could be a sticky thread where you can learn the correct way to write your language. I would be able to aid some in Yoruba.

Hmm, think I might have dropped this in the wrong thread. Was reading both the suggestion thread and this one!
CultureRe: Nairaland Official Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba Dictionary by StarFlux:
Could also be alaaye, living being. But hard to say, never heard aloye before, it sounds like some Edo name called Aloaye.

Oye is easy to identify, but no idea where you would get "al" from, can't think of any word that would make sense. Al = seller/owner. An owner of oye?? You sure it's Yoruba?
