Election is all about building a coalition that will make sure you get to the final number to take you over the finish line. In US, we call that Electoral College. The magic number is 270. Looking at GEJ situation he made a strategic error in his calculation when he got elected, you can see this in the people he appointed to important positions in his administration. Not one notable appointment from the Southwest was made by his administration. He wanted to build a coalition made up of the North, South South, Middle Belt, and the the South East. That coalition was designed with the sole objective of leaving the South West out of the power structure. That would have condemned the South West to political wilderness. Had GEJ taken the time to look at the election result that got him elected in the first place, he would have noticed that the coalition that got him elected were mostly made up of the South West, South South, South East, and some areas in the Middle Belt. The North were never with him, in fact had he kept that coalition intact the North would have been frozen out of power forever. Fast forward to the present the only coalition that appeared to be with him are mainly the South South, and the South East. That is not a winnable coalition.

Why are nigerians short sighed?

One of my uncle recently bought a 2009 tokunbo suv for 2.5 million naira.

He didn't know he could get a brand new innoson suv for 3 million and naija made hyundai suv for 3.5m
Unbelievable. The cheapest Hyundai/Kia Suv sold in US has a MSRP of about $22,000, and that doesn't include the cost of some additional options. I know that $22000 is very much greater that N3.5M, so you are in essence telling me that Hyundai suv are cheaper in Nigeria than in US.

What are the implications?
Take for example Innoson whose business has been supported by GEJ's policies. His cars are being used by FG agencies, police and FRSC in some parts of the country, individuals and companies are also rushing to pick up his cars.
With his business moving at such pace, is it a bad thing if he turns to a billionaire?
What about the jobs created?
You are being given too much Ogogoro my friend, Innoson or what ever you call the company do not make any car, nor assemble any car, You dont have the infrastructure for large scale manufacturing of car in the country. What is the make and model of the car made by this Innoson Company.

So you couldn't put a Yoruba person as the Speaker. So what happen with CBN Governor, Finance Minister, Chief Justice, Oil Minister, IGP,Aviation Minister, etc. I hate it when someone tries to play people for a foul. Just admit it, you never had an intention of doing anything. Now the arithmetic for re-election just ain't adding up with only the Southeast, and SS. You now realize you need the Southwest. You tried so much to appeased the people in the North throughout your tenure thinking that at the end of the day they will be with you. Your calculation was based entirely on screwing up the people of Southwest. You forgot one thing, the North were never going to be with you. They wanted what you hard. You had a good coalition but you threw it away.

Are you comparing Boko haram to Niger delta militants? Those guys had a reason for fighting. They fought for their oil, government called for amnesty and they agreed. But Boko haram will they agree for amnesty, they are fighting to islamize the whole Nigeria, they are working hard to discredit the mans work. One thing I know is that if Jonathan is no longer president, Boko haram will automatically stop
For some reason I find myself agreeing with you, Before anyone start shouting. Just my personal opinion. I know that not all muslims are terrorist but for some odd coincidence majority of terrorists tend to be muslim.

It's a very wise decision to take which will help to curb unemployment in the country. And about d Duration of d cars,my dear its certain! Cars will be cheap that even d poor can afford it,Nigeria will export cars to other countries n it will help to build our Economy! Let's always be positive,Nigeria is our country, let's make it a better place.
What ever you are smoking, kindly give me some of it. Instead of 20 point transformation agendas why cant this government just get fixated on one. Get the country L I G H T.. Assembling a car in country that can't currently produce a simple safety pin. Lawd Have Mercy. Can someone just tell which component in the assembling of a car can be locally made apart form the most obvious one which is labor. Starting with least MRO item which are the fasten clips we cant even make that. Its all pipe dream when it comes to assembling car in Nigeria. Until the light situation, basic infrastructure are in place nothing is going to happen regarding car assembly in Nigeria. This policy is nothing but a revenue enhancement for the government.
Foreign Affairs › Re: Scotland Scottish Referendum: Voters To Reject Independence - BBC by t2luv1: 2:00pm On Sep 19, 2014
Collynzo17: Absolute trash!
1. The UN is always involved in a referendum, any country that emerges from a referendun not sanctioned by the UN is not internationally recognized i.e somaliland etc
2&3. The South South region was artificially carved out to address the issue of minorities and from the look of things, they are happy with being seen as one region.
4. Biafran pound was used by Biafra for 2 years, I am not aware of any difficulty in creating a new currency, maybe you need to educate us on that.
5. Those who have oil on their land will control what belongs to them
6. Land locked countries exist all over the world and most are doing well. They can always import through the ports of neighbouring countries and pay the required duties.
7. Comparing the disunity in Nigeria with what is obtainable in the UK is quite laughable.
Bottomline: People must be allowed to choose what is right for them.
Your arrogant and long sermon cannot change that.
What are the states that might be included in creating Biafra. I am just curious to know.

sonnie10: In as much as we are all aware that anything goes in Nija, I believe that any thing that is worth doing is worth doing right. You do not have to own a plant as big as Innoson to do this. Any certified auto mechanic, given the right equipment and tools would be able to mount an engine/ transmission and suspension. Same goes for the electrical aspect. What else is a car made up of? This is not the job for engineers.
You just text the magic words "Right Equipment and Tools".
Car Talk › Re: Nigeria Begins Implementation Of 35% Levy On Imported New Vehicles by t2luv1: 3:39am On Sep 19, 2014
sonnie10: On the customs website, there is provision for importation of semi Completely Knocked Down (CKD) vehicles. The total duty/levy on semi-CKD is about 20%. I would assume that any smart importer would bring the vehicle in as semi- CKD. All it would take is to employ people who would put the parts together; considering that labor is cheap in Nigeria, this definitely would be more cost effective.

In a layman term, importing semi-CKD means you ship only body, and the mechanical/electrical components are packed and shipped separately.
With all the electronics in some of these cars God forbid your local repair man accidentally plug in the wrong harness wire and your check engine light comes on, but the repair man assure you all is well with the car. You have an accident and the air bag module fail to deploy hope you remember how it all started with someone just trying to pay 20% duty on "Semi-CKD". God help us in that country. Like I always say we Nigerians deserve the government we have. FYI In US when a car comes into the country the destination charge is $495 that is it. You can check by looking at car Manufactured Suggested Retail Price (MSRP). The same car after having been used for 6 yrs in US now arrive in Nigeria, and the clearing cost is close to $4000.00.

texazzpete: I'm not sure which is more stupid.

This brainless policy or the ordinary Nigerians that defend it.

The tariff increase is NOT required to create jobs. tax breaks and import waivers for local manufacturers are more than enough incentive to attract more investment in this sector.
People will patronise locally assembled cars if the savings from the local assembly is passed on to the consumer. At this stage, the local assembly scene is still in its nascent stages, there are ZERO vehicles available for sale apart from a few lower end and tiny Hyundai or Kia vehicles. Where is the local car for anyone who wants to buy a reliable family sized Sedan?

It's strange...when it comes to fuel subsidy removal the FG is keen to stress that 'Market forces' will drive down prices of fuel. For some reason, they are incredibly reluctant to let these same 'Market forces' apply in the purchase of autos.

All this has done is to drastically drive up the cost for the average Nigerian to purchase a vehicle that they like. Only sycophants and traitors are in support of this tarriff increase at this moment.
What I find amazing is there are some Nigerians that actually believe there are any semblance of auto assembly going on in that country. I got news for those people, you are being taken for a ride. I repeat NO car/auto assembly plant currently exist in that country. This policy along with other policies like this are being done for one simple fact, to raise revenue for the government. Nothing about creating jobs, that was just a hook to make the policy acceptable to the masses. When does any Nigerian government start caring about people. There are no Hyundai/Kia assembly plant in Nigeria. In fact Hyundai Corporation does not list Nigeria as one the country where they have assembly plant. Only Hyundai can assembly any car carrying the company trade mark logo. For confirmation just logon to Hyundai web sites and search.

I just don't get how houses in Nigeria go for such high amounts, and you get nothing, no amenities, nothing!

Compare this guys neighbourhood now in Lekki:

And those houses goes for 1/4th of the cost it takes just to buy a plot of (120X60) in Lekki. Only in Nigeria !!!!. I always wonder how people are able to justify spending such a huge amount just to buy a land with no amenities.

whirlwind7: It doesn't take rocket science to figure out. Cost of running business in Nigeria is outrageously high. Same reason why many companies have been shut down: No water, no electricity.
In manufacturing term we call it COGS (Cost of Goods Sold). Normally labor is the most expensive item during cost roll up in determining how much to sell a manufacture good. In Nigeria it is usually utilities. That is why I am always skeptical when I read about an auto company setting up shop in Nigeria cos I know from experience how important constant source of energy is to a manufacturing or assembly plant. I know we will get there one day.
