Jones was rated highest on our side.

Smalling and Jones are our best CB pairing. The earlier we allow them to develop the better. They have not lost a game together since last season.
True. For me the two have been fantastic. I just hope Jones have gotten over his injury problems. If the two can stay fit, they`ll be great for the team.

Man city wasn't there for the taking.
Rooney suckedass in the forward position but Otamendi and kompany also peformed brilliantly.

I don't think Martial could've done better as a CF especially in this particular game.

Hererra and Mata played horribly today I don't see anyone giving them lip.

Rojo just earned that LB position with this peformance.
Jones,Smalling (Mr reliable),Valencia played very well.
Martial na still our Saviour.
They were there. You said their defenders were solid because Rooney gave them nothing to worry about.

Are you telling me that Martial would`ve been anonymous the way Rooney was? Didn`t you see number of Martial`s take ons? He would`ve been constatly attacking them which might have created something different. He would`ve offered something different for them to think about. Rooney didn`t muster anything against their defence.

Playing Martial on the left instead of him top-striking cost us this game. Man city were there for the taking. I don't know how long this will continue. That is a point lost as far as i'm concerned. If Rooney must play, why not let him play on the left wing? Playing Martial on the left wing is a real waste of his talent and money paid to acquire him.

Rooney's stats as the top man:

55% pass accuracy
0 shots on target
0 chances created
0 take ons

Martial's stats on LW:

81% pass accuracy
13 take ons
3 crosses
2 blocks
1 chance created

We didn't even have any shot in the first half.

Man Utd whiz Martial 'personally' rejected Chelsea

Anthony Martial personally rejected a move to Chelsea in the final weeks of the summer market.

Sport says while Manchester United had been in touch, Chelsea were the first serious offer to be tabled to Monaco for Martial.

Martial, however, had his heart set on moving to Old Trafford and made it clear to ASM that he wouldn't consider Chelsea while United were an option.

This prompted Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho to move for Pedro, then of Barcelona.

Last weekend, Monaco vice president, Vadim Vasilyev, revealed: "There was another club that offered more money than Manchester United. I will not say much more but the price, with included variables, was greater. But he wanted to go to Old Trafford because it was his dream."
Revealed: The Premier League club Anthony Martial rejected to join Manchester United

The French teenager moved to Old Trafford for an initial £36million on deadline day - but which club also made a late bid for him?
Manchester United striker Anthony Martial turned down a move to Chelsea at the end of the transfer window.

The French teenager moved to Old Trafford for an initial £36million on deadline day and has enjoyed a fine start, scoring four goals in his first six games.

Eyebrows were raised when United splashed the cash on Martial but they were not the only Premier League side in for him, as Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev claimed this week.

Chelsea were keen to agree a deal for the 19-year-old striker, which would see him remain with Monaco for the rest of the season.
“There was another club that offered even more than United,” Vasilyev said.

“I will not say how much, but the fixed price, without variables, it was even better. And also they offered us to have him for a further year in Monaco.

“But the boy wanted to go to Manchester, it was his dream. And we let him go with the bonus of €30m. Had it not been for so much money, he’d have stayed.”

"I was surprised they sold him," Wenger said.

"The amount of money was massive. I believe that you could think that, if you are Monaco, you could have sold him as well next season."

Yeah, playing both Young who isn`t a full back and Blind who isn`t a CB and not fast and Memphis who is yet to get his rythm brings weakness to that side. Darmian didn`t get enough cover up at all. The team was weakened on both sides of the pitch.

LVG team selection was totally wrong yesterday. I don`t know how many times i`ll ask this question? Why did he buy Schneiderlin? This guy needs regular games in order to gel with this team. Starting two 30+ midfielders against fast paced Arsenal players was a recipe for defeat. That our back four has been unsettled since Shaw`s injury.
Our slow buuld up isn`t helping matters at all. Imagine us having 303 forward passes and 293 backward or square passes. Meaning when we take a step forward, we take another step backwards. Young isn`t a fullback. He should be starting ahead of Memphis. LVG is just disorganising this team.

In other news, Kloop has agreed to join Liverpool.

I don`t know if the op read all the 13 charges brought up against Saraki and if he did, it either means he doesn`t understand all the charges or he`s just out to defend the indefensible.

This is beyond anormally or oversight. What will CCB call a man who in 2003 declared a property that he did not own in that year when evidence showed that he actually bought the property in 2006 when he was governor for? He did many in the same way. This is quite different from a situation whereby he declared those assets, he actually owns them before he became the governor but the years he stated were different from the years he actually bought them. That is an anormally or oversight.

So unlucky for Shaw to be out for an average of 295 days after injury ridden first season.

He has been in fantastic form since the beginning of the season. To even think that the guy that caused him the injury wasn`t even given a red card for such tackle is bad. I even read that the guy was given the Man of the match.

Sigh! Wia do i even start from.....
1. Like i said b4, Martial cant be called to start this kind of games for us! He's only a 19 yr old. His naivety was found out yesterday. We needed an experienced CF to utilise the host of chances we created in dat 2nd half and we'd ve equalized and buried PSV. Nice one LVG.

2. United now consists of mediocre players. Even Mata couldn't control a simple sitter. This isn't d Mata i watched at Chelsea. That one was more deadly and could take on any defender. Seems playing him on the wings has severely dulled his senses.

3. EPL teams continue their poor showing in the UCL. Even ManCity wit all their domination in the league couldn't beat a Juventus side who were witout a win so far this season. SMH!!

4. LVG is the major reason United are going thru this terrible form. The man still has no idea how to come from behind and win a match. If we're losing, all he knows is to bring on Fellaini and start throwing long balls. There is a limit to what Fellaini can do na. Abi the guy sha no be magician...
LVG is a disgrace to World Class coaches everywia and i ll be the happiest United fan once he runs down his contract nxt summer.

If we can't beat this simple PSV team, then we definitely cant beat any team in this UCL. Disgraceful!!! angry angry
I have always said it and will continue saying it that LVG is the problem of this team.

* I was so upset when he sold Chicharito the only experienced striker we had apart from Rooney and he didn't bring in any experienced striker to replace him. Martial is a good prospect and he showed glimpses of that today but this guy is for the future. How can we depend on a 19 yrs old kid to lead our attack?

* How Schweini finished that game is beyond my comprehension. I was thinking he would bring in Carrick to replace him for the last 30 mins when it was obvious that Shweini was tired.

* Playing Herrera beside Schweini isn't Ok at all. He should've learnt this in the match we payed away to Brugges that Herrera improved when he moved him forward. That was what i expected him to do. Scheiderlin was bought for a purpose. Why is he not playing him also? He should be substituting Scheini and Carrick for each other in games.

* There is nothing wrong with playing possession football but when you are telling them to play it with strict instructions to always pass to next available player there will always be problems. No risk taking and no freedom to express themselves when the get into the final third. There were two different occasions when Shweini and Young had opportunity to shoot but the rather look for someone else to still pass the ball to. Young that used to shoot from an opportunity comes doesn't shoot anymore.

* With the possession we are having we should be outscoring teams like PSV not minding their counter. Afterall, the counters will always be there.

Interesting read
Trust the Process: Taking a deeper look at Louis van Gaal’s possession control

Prelude: “Trust the Process” is a tagline familiar with NBA team Philadelphia 76ers who are in rebuilding mode and are in the process to become a perennial contender. I found it seemingly apt that the tagline also applies to Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United. This is not because there are any similarities between the two franchises but because there is a bigger picture in both instances and a method to their madness.

Manchester United’s performances under Louis van Gaal can be best described as either unconvincing yet effective or adequate yet insufficient at times. The quality of football has not been pretty and the hangover from Ferguson era has left a nostalgic stain in the hearts and minds of the fans. They have convinced themselves that United always played exciting football, and scored boat loads of goals. United under Ferguson certainly scored a lot of goals but the football, especially towards the end of his reign was not pretty by means.

When Van Gaal took charge after the debacle that was the Moyes era, he promised exactly that; attacking football. But he also insisted that it was a process. Now in the second year of the Dutch master’s tenure at Old Trafford, people are still left wondering what exactly is this philosophy and process the manager speaks of.

Philosophy and the Process

To understand Van Gaal’s philosophy, it is important to also appreciate the ideas Van Gaal is trying to integrate within the squad. United have been able to dominate possession in majority of the matches they have played under him. The Reds have been able to achieve that mainly because they have played with tremendous organization and compactness. A greater emphasis is being placed on pressing opponents deep into their half; which in turn has helped stabilize the defence. Often accused of being weak at the back, United have maintained one of the best defensive record’s in the league.

Many mistake controlling the possession is Van Gaal’s philosophy; when in fact it is a byproduct of another major component. Irrespective of formation, pressing the opponent is key to Van Gaal’s system and process. To comprehend this, you have to understand what counterpressing is. What it essentially means is to press the opponent as an organized unit immediately after losing possession. While transitioning to defense, the entire team hunts the ball to win it back and prevent counterattacks. Last year, United led the league in successful man-oriented geggenpressing/counterpressing percentage. And compared to top European teams they ranked close to the likes of Bayern Munich and Barcelona. This season they have continued to build on that and have shown remarkable improvement in defensive transition and organization.

The system and 4-2-3-1

The 4-2-3-1 system is designed to outnumber the opposition in midfield. It gives the team the required flexibility to support both the defence and attack quickly. When in possession of the ball, there is an attempt to stretch the play and increase the distance between the rows. The below image shows how the formation is fluid and can change to a 4-3-3 or diamond in attack. In this system, it allows United to recycle the ball and switch play to create superior number situations with reinforced roles of the defensive midfielders (no 6s). If the left and right midfielders move forward, they can become wingers. If one of the defensive midfielders or centre-backs join the attack a strong attack can be developed.

When not in possession, the shape can revert to a 4-4-2 or a 4-1-4-1 system as they set up pressing traps to regain the ball. The pressing traps are used to shut off angles and force the opposition to play the ball where you want to.

Controlling the possession is impressive but what is far more important to the process of attacking football here is what is done with the ball after regaining possession. When a team is able to dominate possession, it gives them freedom to also control and move the opposition however they want. While United have been able to master the defensive transition, on the other end they have struggled to maintain their attacking transition consistently. Although they have been able to quickly disrupt the opponent’s shape, they have struggled to circulate the ball higher up the field with pace and creativity to take advantage of it.

The decisive factor for this system to work successfully is for the entire team to work together. Each player has a defined role and need to maintain structure and discipline. You need players that are highly intelligent and are able occupy the zones and create space for one another. This is extremely difficult to master and hence United’s struggles in attack is not entirely surprising. But once the team becomes fluid and the transitions can be mastered, the team can easily dominate.

(I had an intriguing conversation with @EddieTrulyReds regarding this earlier last week and hopefully his piece on squad synergy will help you understand this more)

Personnel and Pace

A glaring need that has been evident for a while has been the need for pace and creativity in attack. Currently a lot of the problems are focused on Mata and Rooney. Rooney has struggled to play the lone striker role and has not been playing off the shoulder of the defenders. On the other hand, Mata has the tendency to veer centrally instead of stretching the pitch. The Spaniard’s preferential vision and lack of pace means we become one-dimensional in attack; trying to funnel attack through the left hand side.

The addition of Martial and Memphis should certainly help this season. But they are both young and will need time to grow and settle down. With six new additions in the summer, it will take time for the squad to build chemistry and learn the Louis van Gaal way to perform according to expectations. Adem Berkay here points out the previous systems and the type of managers our new additions have worked under. All these players have a history of working under highly tactical managers in different positions. They fit the mold of multi-functionality and add balance to the squad.

Conclusion: Why should you trust the process?

To recap, as mentioned before, for the system to work everyone in the squad need to work as a unit to make it successful. With the major overhaul the squad went through this summer, it certainly stalled the progress United were slated to make this season. But the squad is currently vastly improved and has strengthened in areas that were neglected for years.

Martial exhibited on his debut what wonders an adept dribbler can bring to the attack. United create plenty of overload situations with their style of play. Once they are able to improve their attacking transition, they can get their wingers and fullbacks in one on one situations against opposition defenders. This will help open up space and stretch the pitch, that will allow for more free-flowing football, more chances, and in turn for more goals.

Even though United may not look like title contenders right now, they are close and have the potential to become one. The football may look aesthetically unpleasant right now but United are playing better with each passing week. They have the prospect to be even better with a few more additions to the squad. But getting almost an entire new squad of signings to settle in and have an immediate impact is unrealistic.

Van Gaal’s strict management style may also be a hindrance to the squad reaching its full potential. Only time will tell if that is the case. Eventually the club may require a slightly more flexible and personable personality to take the squad forward. But believe it or not, Van Gaal’s process and instilled philosophy will bring United back into the upper echelon of European football. His process is going to leave behind a squad that could become a perennial contender at home and in Europe for years to come.
