Since when did having alleged extremist views become valid reasons to cancel your Visa? I'm pretty sure his visa would not have been renewed in 2010, but the current visa would have stood until then until more concrete evidence was available to link him with any plot to attack the United States. The report from his father makes him a suspicious fellow who would probably have been under surveillance in the US, but not so serious as to generate a no-fly status. Add to that the guy's profile as a wealthy Nigerian - and Nigerians have never been known to be suicidal (until now). It's laughable to insist that the US is at fault for not canceling the guy's visa. What about Lagos and Amsterdam that allowed this fellow to board a flight carrying explosives? |
You do realize that Royal Bank of Scotland and the Lloyd's Banking Group had to sell off many bank branches and lay off several staff to stay afloat even after the injection of bailout funds from the British Government? It's only when it happens in Nigeria that people start blaming the person bailing out the ailing banks. |
away4real:Please stop dodging the issue. The rot in the banking sector did not happen overnight. It happened in Soludo's tenure, and he had to be aware of it. So what exactly did he do to manage the situation? If he was actually doing something, then why is there no indication that there were any ongoing improvements? My Enron analogy is apt in this situation. Had prompt action been taken in Enron case, bankruptcy may have been avoided. Definitely Enron would have had to downsize to minimize losses - hence a loss of non-critical manpower (which is what is happening here). Enron was allowed to collapse and instead of merely taking a bitter pill, the whole body was lost. In this case these measures the banks are taking are to ensure profitability and viability. Do you have any proof that the cost of doing noting would have been less? |
MrCrackles:Sometimes, the thing confounds me o! Imagine a case when the news first broke of the Nigerian bomber's attempt and several reactions here were insisting that the whole thing may have been a CIA plot to invade the Niger Delta. NIgerians have long preferred to put their trust in wildly implausible conspiracy theories instead of using their God given brains ![]() The messiah culture in Nigeria has meant people are extremely reluctant to give up their heroes. Nigerians LOVE their heroes! Which is why to many Dora Akunyili can do no wrong, and to those Soludo worshippers, it's far better to heap all the blame on Sanusi than to acknowledge that their hero may have been asleep at the wheel in recent times. |
90% of Nairaland men will give their wives little or no say in how they handle their affairs. Yet these same people heap blame on MAryam's head for all the atrocities IBB committed. May her Soul rest in Peace. |
away4real:HAve you considered that it may well be because you people have put Sanusi on the defensive for merely doing his job that he has to go around defending his actions and his position with vigor? Someone carried out actions to bring sanity in the banking sector and he was promptly submerged with accusations of tribalism, Northern agenda, Sharia culture, favouritism, bias and corruption. And let's not forget the infamous Vanguard article (a favourite tool in the hands of fools). When presented with such full spectrum, unfounded accusations what is the man supposed to do but defend himself increasingly? Has any of you ever asked Soludo what he did to manage the situation? I mean, you all bandy that phrase about, but what did he really do? |
If only someone had intervened decisively in the case of Enron in 1999/2000, perhaps the devastating bankruptcy coud have been avoided and 22000 employees would not have been jobless. But perhaps if someone had intervened then, you'd have a few shortsighted people complaining about retrenchments and other cost saving methods, just like how some of you here are whining about Sanusi. It beats me hollow how some people are lauding Soludo for 'managing the situation quietly'. The man saw the rot and kept quiet for his own political and personal gains. Between Soludo and Sanusi, we at least know one of them that took swift and decisive action to curb the bleeding. |

[/quote]No. It's the aftermath of Soludo sleeping on the job in the latter years of his stewardship.3500 gone, perhaps could have been tens of thousands if any of the big banks had gone under. |
Onlytruth:So the best way to have a 'united country' is to egg on those spreading the message of disunity, abi? Onlytruth:We're not solving ANY problems. In fact, we are supporting the existing ones and happily creating new ones. |
Of course the guy had a passport. These guys just sold that cock and bull story to that news agency for some cash. |
MandingoII:I admire your convictions. I hope you take time out to demonstrate your strong stand by travelling to Saudi Arabia to preach the gospel. Or by bringing in 30 Kg of Indian Hemp to Singapore or Malaysia. You could also try jogging down a busy street in Tel Aviv with a Swastika emblazoned on your t-shirt. Bottom line, rules are in place to be obeyed, and morally grey areas should be avoided. Seriously, this is not even 100% about 'censorship'. in most cases, those posts and posters add nothing to the Politics section, and nothing at all to the discussion of Politics. |
I see the tribalists have started fighting back. No big surprise there. In any decent, well moderated forum, rules are laid down and rules are obeyed. Divisive and hate-filled topics are disallowed completely. Why is Nairaland any different? As if on cue, i see people trotting out inane arguments to support their position. Who cares if the Nigerian govt. practices quota system, does that mean we need to entrench divisive lines of tribalism in everything we do or say? Is there to be no inflection point where we realise what needs to be done for the future and work towards it? What then is the point of everything if the educated young minds revert happily into the gutter we're trying to get out from? Why do we not realise the essential STUPIDITY inherent in tribal bias and tribalism? We come from a Negroid race enslaved in the past by the Arabs and by the caucasians of Europe and America simply because our difference was easily explained away as inferiority. Now, here we are keen to drive such lines of division and inferiority amongst ourselves! Even as kids, one of the first tales we were told was about the fact that while one single broom stick was incredibly weak, a bunched group of broomsticks became far stronger. The lesson was 'together we stand, divided we fall'. Yet here we are in a nation desperately needing unity and strength to survive, and all you educated louts can think about is to further drive down the division amongst us. There is a need for stronger, more effective moderation in Nairaland, and nowhere is it needed more than the Politics section. Tribalism aside, the fact that the mods see nothing wrong in someone posting a topic of 'Man stabs neighbour over girlfriend' or 'Man turns into goat' in a Politics section is serious cause for worry. |
Sending a warning of that nature is still no grounds to cancel the visa. The best the US officials could do was to put his name on a 'suspicious' list. That lost is circulated around and should have then meant a tougher screening process for him at the airport. All those saying the US should have canceled his visa are being extremely naive. I do not think his father can absolve himself of any blame. Afterall, it obviously wasn't the son that rented that multimillion pound apartment in London. @kobojunkie I've seen report that he's Been to the us in 2008 for bout 11 days. |

When they made Kosovo a mod here, i and several others were dismayed, i no go lie. But so far he's doing a FAR better job than that clown RichyBlack ever did. Abeg Kosovo, enforce the rules jo. Deal with all these tribalists once and for all. |
The 'report to moderator' button is useless. Nothing ever comes of it. At the end of the day, it's just someone sitting down, rubbing his hands in childish glee while adsense money piles up, caring nothing for the fact that the average IQ in the 'Politics' section is dropping daily. THis is why Nairaland may never be a force to reckon with politically, while other communities like Nigeriavillagesquare are growing daily in influence. |
sodconfirm:Shut the hell up, you stoopid, terrorist sonovabitch. What do those 289 people in that plane have to do with Afghanistan and Iraq? So it's all right in your books to kill innocent civillians, abi? You bastards are the worms killing this world, the demons that plague NIgeria. I should like to kill you myself. |
Alpha3006:What a load of bull. BBC et al are reporting that it's in Nigerian media thAt the father tried to warn the us embassy. Until the US confirms it, I'll take such news with a pnch of salt. The dad cannot remove himself from blame. Whose multimillion pound house was the man staying in in London? Who gave a 23 year old so much money? |
olatayor:Stop being retarded and listen to how ridiculous you sound. What the hell has a 'conspiracy' got to do with anything? What's the connection with this terrorist attempt and the Niger Delta? Is the arrested fellow even from the NIger Delta? olatayor:And you think it's easy to smuggle a sophisticated bomb aboard a US plane in this day and age? If this is the cornerstone of your entire 'conspiracy' argument, i think you need to work on improving your IQ as soon as possible. |
letustalk:ok, i'm in a much better mood. apologies for the offensive language. Usually 160GB is the upper tier for netbook HDDs, at least until recently. Any higher has got to be a specially configured version. My advice is for you to go for a hp mini 311. It's 11 inches (i think) but more importantly it's got the Nvidia Ion graphics chipset, so it should provide better video and 3d performance. Not too sure about Windows 7, it's only recently that Netbooks started shipping with them, and the version pre-installed in the netbooks that do have them is the starter edition. That said, it still is better than XP IMHO. Have a nice Christmas. |
Where are all those 'touch not my anointed' Christians? |
This has nothing to do with being a 'square peg in a round hole'. this woman is simply either incompetent or dumb. When a woman informs the Senate that after spending hundreds of millions of naira on the Rebranding project, her biggest achievements were 1. Wrangling an apology from SOny over the PS3 advert and 2. Banning the District 9 movie You get to wonder why people are still making excuses for the woman who has long since joined the rogues gallery of clowns in the leadership. ndcide:Unlike you, i expect better from my leaders. And when they do not deliver as promised, in a democratic setting we are meant to question them. I have great pity for you. You're suffering from self-inflicted mental slavery. |

http://thelongharmattanseason..com/2008/04/nigerian-bankers-award-2008.html Stumbled across this link talking about Vanguard's 2008 Bank awards. From all indications the awards have been pretty big money spinners in the past for Vanguard newspapers, no points for guessing why they are so ticked off at Sanusi ![]() |
dappssee:I don't care what you have to say, posting in CAPS and such big font is poor netiquette. |
Ben Swift:No. Bizarre. |
letustalk:Don't be daft. There's no 10.1 inch netbook with any processor greater than an intel Atom. The standard Atom config for HP netbooks is between 1.6 - 1.66 Ghz. Don't get me started on Fingerprint recognition for a netbook. You sure you really know what a netbook is? |
Afam:You can state this categorically because you've had the benefit of time to come to this conclusion. But how else did you expect the northerners to react or perceive that coup when 1. the main actors were Igbos 2. A whole lot of influential northerners were killed. Perhaps they really should have killed Ironsi if they wanted to prove the 'detribalized coup' angle. However, they didn't. and to be fair, it doesn't take much of a stretch to believe that the coup had a strong ethnic agenda. |
