@davidylan I laugh when these guys start pulling out the crusades to diss christians, i wonder what they say of the muslim horde that swept into Spain. vacationeers? most people don't know that the Crusaders first came in on invitation of the Byzantine emperor of Constantinople, Alexius I, he made an impassioned appeal to Europe to help him repel muslim invasion forces, soon after he lost an important battle. Europeans and the papacy didn't give armed liberation of Jerusalem any thought until the muslim Caliph Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah, destroyed the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, even going as far as ordering the foundations to be hacked out. This turned attention towards events going on in Jerusalem, and set the stage for the Crusades. So you see, even Christianity's darkest hour was precipitated by armed islamic aggression. Even before the first Crusade, Islamic invasion forces had already overrun much of Spain. |
@lovelyn690 i must admits your post saddens me immeasurably. I've scoured my post from beginning to end, and i can't seem to find anything that'd actually encourage you or anyone to do anything illegal and/or immoral just to get a job. In fact, i recall commending you for turning down that job in abuja. Your initial post was made to share your experience with other graduates out there, and i've only tried to point out that graduates out there could equally combine job hunting with serving diligently. It's called keeping your options open, and i'm all for that. Despite the tough condition of the labour market out there, i know many people who managed to secure jobs during NYSC. While your friends might not have been so lucky, i know many people who were. So i'd always advise covering all bases. You read English Language, and that's a non-technical course. my advise was targeted mainly towards technical courses (engineering, etc) and other non-technical courses which aren't in the academics line. Would you really recommend your own advice for an Engineering graduate? or a computer science graduate? It would have been a whole lot more informative if you'd mentioned you read English language long ago. I've gone over my initial post and i haven't seen anywhere i tried to rub it in that i was gainfully employed and you're not. YOU used the word 'paltry' to describe your own salary, and i even put it in inverted commas when i used it myself. And then you thank Lafem for 'defending' you, insinuating that i was attacking you. Why? I've spoken about complacency so many times, because i've seen first hand how it happens. My mum has a Bsc in Biochemistry and a postgraduate degree from Canada. when she got back to Nigeria she decided to briefly take a teaching job before later looking for a leturing job in the University. she ended up teaching biology for over 18 years before she finally moved to the Ministry of education. So i know what 'briefly settling down' can do. all i've done is to try and warn you of the risks. is that reason enough for me to be demonized? lovelyn690:I never reply to subjects, only to the contents therein, which is what any normal person should do. all i picked on was the attitude towards job seeking during NYSC, which i felt i could improve for the sake of anyone reading this thread for inspiration. lovelyn690:Isn't that what you're doing to me? i'm trying to respond to your views from a different angle, mine!, and you aren't taking kindly to it. lovelyn690:Do i even need to respond to this? In hindsight, i think this below. . . lovelyn690:. . is just a sop thrown at me to make me feel happy. Because not only do you not appreciate my comments, you're clearly convinced i came all out to rub it in and make you 'feel like shit'. Is that how you feel? I doubt it. This is my 543rd post on Nairaland, and no other post has tried to make me feel so mean and terrible as this one. To carelessly ignore all the positives in my comments (even my genuine offer of help) and focus on all the percieved negatives. . . Next time you want only congratulatory replies with no whiff of constructive criticism, please indicate in your post. By the way, the offer of assistance in any way possible still stands. I don't know you, but your story did touch me. adding @yahoo.co.uk to my username gives you the email addy. . . |
@ono thanks for the correction. I was so caught up in writing this in layman's terms (wrote it as a reply on chxta's blog), i dunno how that error slipped out. I should know better ![]() I agree with what you said; these guys need to be carried along, they need to feel the impact of the oil money on their lives. I feel the Government is largely responsible for this. I'm currently on location in the south-south, and it pains me to see how these guys right now are scrambling for political power and prostituting themselves for politics, without a care if the beneficiary is going to bring positive change to their lives. When these people realize that their choices of leaders influence how much impact the 13% derivation has on their lives, they'll see progress. Until then. . . |
how much does this thingy cost? |
@junegirl i'm surprised as yourself that we didnt come to blows on this one, but i'm glad all the same! I wasn't THAT aggressive as i might have sounded o! i prolly did like one test every 2 months. all i ever did was Diamond bank, chevron, mobil, shell, procter and gamble. that's all. really! i wish the poster the best of luck! by God's grace she'll get that big job ASAP! |
@lafem Ure right! it paid off for her, and that's the important thing! The labour market isn't as terrible as u might think sha. i remember when i started working, my close pal hadnt gotten a job. i told her to pay for one night's browsing and in a 'night of madness' (as i termed it) she should apply to the career pages of ALL 25 banks in the country (got that off Nairaland). She took my advice, did the 'night of madness' thingy and she got called for 3 tests within 2 weeks! she finally got a job in Diamond bank 3 weeks later. she turned it down sha, cos by then she had already gotten a job from a test she took 5 months into her service year. I always tell people. Apply to every single goddamned career page of every bank, manufacturing industry, celtel, glo, mtn, proctor and gamble etc in at most 2 nights of madness, you'll prolly get invited for at least one test. . |
Chelski sux! |
@white 'Nkem Don't be sorry. she hasn't told him that this issue is a make-or-break issue in their relationship, she hasn't told him if she's asked him to choose between her and his callers! At least, i dont get those vibes from her story. https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-5291.0.html See the link i just posted above? That's from the topic 'My Boyfriend of 5 years is postponing our Marriage' You'll see that some of the people who've been writing in here to advocate postponing the relationship were bashing another guy for daring to postpone his marriage to a nairalander. Postponing the wedding without concrete talks is sending a wrong message to the guy! |
@Donzman Yes, mugabe executed land reforms. But was it positive or negative? When you destroy your country's hopes of producing agricultural produce in one fell swoop, just because of a personal lust to hold on to power, does that make you sensible? The rape on democracy that has been going on in Zimbabwe is obvious even to the most myopic of observers. Coupled with his draconian policies and actions, which include the battering of all political opponents. . . mugabe's just an ass. As you eat three square meals today and sleep in your comfortable bed, remember the people starving in harare. Even without western aid, before his 'land reforms' Zinbabweans could eat. don't give me that crap about western sanctions. |
who said anything about killing or hitting you? Sissy girl! Now, stop wasting time on this thread! look for someone out there to argue with/fight! |
esto:Plasma? in a laptop? Nigga is u crazy?! Besides, the topic clearly says 'LCD'. if you're interested in new glasses i can hook u up. . . ![]() |
@Lafem You presume too much when it comes to me. i had an old p3 system i had been using for years, i was given a small (barbing saloon type) generator by a close friend. Either way, i trucked these over to where i was serving, simply because i was into IT before my service, and i didnt want to let my brain stagnate for 1 year. I didnt say those things to brag, all i wanted to point out was that you can be dedicated to your work as a corper and still have time to hustle for jobs. It's not about having money; with no light or gsm in the village i served in, all my contacts kinda dried up! it wasn't every out-of-state test/interview that broke the bank in terms of transport. from Abia state (where i served) I wrote a test in Owerri and one in port harcourt. the furthest i ever went for a test was Ibadan. i did my final interview in warri. Some of these guys (NNPC, Shell, Mobil) even refund your transport fare! I did my first job test the day after i passed out of the 3 week NYSC orientation camp! i started early, you see. . .that was at Chevron and yes, i did get a refund. As you can see, i did Chevron and Mobil tests and didnt get through to the next stage but i didnt give up until i made it. Stop assuming. There were many broke ass corpers who somehow managed to travel long distances to find work, and they persisted because they knew that while it's difficult, it isn't impossible! This is what i'm trying to highlight here. it isn't just about sitting down, it's about moving and pushing hard for this. There's no need for us to bicker over this. read the first post again. She says "While my friends were busy writing bank tests and other jobs' tests,i was busy getting more dedicated to the school where i was carrying out my primary assignment.Hoping and praying to God to be retained immediately after service." So, when you ask me what if those guys looking foro jobs don't get the jobs, why not ask what if her school didn't retain her? If she's using this medium to advise others in the same position, what if they don't get retained? PS: I'm not bragging about any 'HR skills'. But what else can i use to describe free computer classes for the principal, buttering up the VP, pallying with the other teachers and taking extra lessons gratis just to get permission to travel for tests? If you have a better term than that to describe the above, please tell ![]() |
@Lafem You finished raving yet? This lady has posted this piece not only with the intention of sharing her experiences with others, but also as a way of passing on advice to others. While it is true that most people don't get jobs during or immediately after service, i know many people who've gotten jobs during NYSC and just immediately after service. of those who got immediately after service (including me!) all applied while serving. So even if the situation is desperate, and the number of those who get these jobs are few compared to those who don't get it, should that be an excuse for not even trying, for a complete lack of effort? Hell no! besides, my advice to her that she she risks complacency comes on the heels of her going as far as opening a provision store and setling down in the school. I never said she was going to become complacent, all i said was she risked complacency. obviously the nuances of the English language are lost on you. Lafem:If you had read her post as effectively as you admonish me to have done, you'd see that SHE used the word 'paltry' herself. Lafem:Perfect. See the word i put in bold font? May, not will. Because then again, you just might get lucky. As i was. as so many people i know were. I put in my best during my service year, i taught many classes, even used my own computer (powered with my own generator, with my own fuel!) to teach my students. through it all, i made my HR skills work for me, secured approval to travel for interviews and tests during my service year. I dont know about you, but I have served, and i know how easy it is to get a fellow corper to cover for you when you travel for job tests etc. And if you're a dedicated worker, you'll find it easy to obtain permission to travel. Hell, you can even reschedule your periods with other teachers. So stop this negative attitude of yours. I'm telling all Corps Members to hustle, it's hard but you just might be the lucky one! |
I could be wrong, the prices on www.balogtek.com for P IV motherboard (3.0ghz) is a good deal higher than that on the gafunk website. perhaps the one sold on Gafunk could be sans processor? It doesn't seem so, but it might. If this is true, then it could up the price about 15K. Either way, 65K sans monitor is still a very good buy. |
I'm sick of hearing people on this forum say that vista can only be run on an 'excessively powered, expensive super system'. I've taken pains here to show how you can assemble a system here in Nigeria to run all versions of Vista with just N50K. The parts and prices were lifted off www.gafunk.com, a site belonging to one of the biggest computer shops in Otigba. We'll be assembling a Pentium IV 3ghz system with 1GB RAM, 80GB Hard Disk, 128MB Nvidia Geforce 3 GPU, Pioneer DVD writer, Floppy Drive here goes. . . . P IV Casing : N4100 P IV Motherboard and 3ghz processor: N18900 RAM (1GB) : N9000 Nvidia Geforce 3 128MB GPU: N6900 Keyboard + Mouse : N1000 (cheap brands!) Seagate 80GB HDD: N7000 Pioneer 16x DVD Writer: N4200 floppy drive: N1000 all these add up to N52100. Of course you can always save money by cutting out the Floppy DIsk Drive (which is pretty much useless anyway), and if you have older systems (like 99% of us do) you can harvest the mouse and keyboard from there. All these prices can be found at www.gafunk.com. as these are the listed prices, pricing is recommended to shave off some thousands off the purchase price. This solution does not include a monitor which i feel we can all get from somewhere or the other. Let's compare this to the microsoft recommended specs for windows vista 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor 1 GB of system memory 40 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space Support for DirectX 9 graphics with: WDDM Driver 128 MB of graphics memory (minimum) Pixel Shader 2.0 in hardware 32 bits per pixel DVD-ROM drive Audio Output Internet access (fees may apply) Here we can see that the assembled system meets and exceeds the recommended specs in every way! I'm not sure what the unnamed Geforce 3 card can do, but a high end geforce 3 should be directx9 compliant! So you can see, dont buy into the hype that a system that can run vista must be hyper expensive. this way you get the full vista experience while providing yourself with a somewhat future proof system (unless, of course, you're a high end gamer). perhaps 8-10K more could even get u a core 2 duo motherboard and processor ( i hope) DISCLAIMER!: In no way am i advertising for Gafunk! I merely used their site as a guide to what you can expect to purchase these in Otigba. |
Blackburn just dialled 1-800-Arsewhupping . . . and that ain't no toll-free call ![]() |
Lol! Liverpool's washing Arse-Anal down 4-1 now. Even Peter Crouch score hat-trick! Arse-Anal just dialled 1-800-ArseWhupping, and that ain't no toll-free call ![]() SO nice watching these kids squabble for third place. One UNited!!! |
There was a time i felt i was getting to cold, too hardened to the ways of this world. I felt i had seen it all, i was too jaded to even be shaken by anything. No longer! I read the link http://www.christianpersecution.info/news/nigeria-muslims-club-christian-teacher-to-death/ i haven't cried in a long time. tears were in my eyes when i read the story. . . May her gentle soul rest in peace. @The One I feel your pain. we need to work to curb these kind of things from happening again. I'm not afraid to say this; by the very act of keeping silent, the Sultan of sokoto, the Imams and rulers of the north are all part and parcel of this evil and they too will reap the punishment that will come on them. Ditto all the Sharia governors (including Yar'Adua himself) and an increasingly uncaring pseudo-born again christian President. |
Just like i said before. . . all these girls can do is advise she postpone the wedding before even talking things out with the guy. If i was in the guy's shoes and i'd hung on for 9 years to marry this girl only for her to postpone the wedding without even talking out our problems, i'd seriously doubt her commitment to the whole thing, in fact that'd even make me start considering alternatives. Just like i said, loads of people fail to seperate their personal anguish from the advice they give out, as a result they come across as cynical and hard. . . an example is quoted below. afrikangal:This creature i quoted is actually urging the poster to break up with the guy and 'no answer hin' on mere suspicion alone. Oh well, we each have our lives to live. Just do what u like, remember that the 2 things Nigerians love 2 say are "I told you so!" and "Oh! Had i known. . ." |
osegwu:STFU with these tasteless jibes already! No one ever gets 'better' by plastic surgery, it's what's inside that determines how good or bad you are. |
This is a very old topic, dunno why it was resurrected here on the front page except for mischievous reasons. . . |
