The gun is placed on a wooden table.

The welder and policeman are crouching and standing on the floor, respectively.
Literature › The Simple Reason Why Wole Soyinka Won The Nobel Literature Prize Of 1986 by Throwback(op): 10:18pm On Nov 16, 2019
The Nobel Prize in Literature 1986 was awarded to Wole Soyinka "who in a wide cultural perspective and with poetic overtones fashions the drama of existence."

https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/literature/1986/summary/

The 3 genres of literature are known to be:
-Prose
-Play (Drama)
-Poetry

Past winners have been awarded based on their works on the totality of the 3 genres or their mastery of 1 or more genres.

Wole Soyinka won due to his works on Play (Drama) and Poetry, and his wider perspective in expressing his genius.

The reason for awarding other winners of the Nobel Literature Prize prior to 1986 and after 1986, can also be found in the link below.

Read again.

None of Wole Soyinkas works comes anywhere close to any of Chinua Achebe's works.
Read again.

It is not a popularity of works contest, else your argument over who should have won should have nothing to do with the 1986 edition of the award, rather you should have equally been contesting why others before Soyinka won the Prize when the Igbo genius merited it before everyone else that had the misfortune of sharing the world stage with Achebe.

Soyinka was awarded the 1986 Nobel Prize for his Plays and Poetry, 2 genres of Literature that do not know the existence of Achebe.

Read again.

Go and drag the 1991 Nobel Prize for Literature with Nadine Gordimer, who was the first African who was awarded the prize for her works in Prose, yet Achebe's works in Prose stand taller than hers.

In summary, since you like dragging things, go drag it with your mate.

No single work of Soyinka comes anywhere close to Achebes things fall apart.
Firstly, Nobel is not a popularity contest of the works of the awardees.

Secondly, the Prize is for Literature and not for just the Prose component of Literature that also includes Play (Drama) and Poetry, which are Soyinka's main strengths and for which specific reason he was awarded in 1986.

If other awardees before and after Soyinka had works that were more popular than Soyinka's, then we would have argued that Soyinka's award was an aberration.

So I reiterate, it is not awarded based on whose work is more popular or widely translated, or based on who is better at Prose.

South Africa's Nadine Gordimer, won the Nobel Literature Prize on the strength of her Prose in 1991. Maybe that was the year Achebe should have won it for being more popular in Prose than Nadine Gordimer.

Achebe wasn't even under consideration when Soyinka won it in 1986.

Nigeria is yet to celebrate anyone's birthday as a national holiday.

June 12 is Democracy day, to celebrate not just Abiola, but all who took part as politicians and electorate, in that historic election. And to celebrate the culmination of the resistance it initiated that led to the Democracy every Nigerian enjoys today.

The 4 academic black Nobel awardees are:

1. William Arthur Lewis. American (Economics 1979)
2. Wole Soyinka. Nigerian (Literature 1986)
3. Derek Walcott. St Lucian (Literature 1992)
3. Toni Morrison. American (Literature 1993)

Wole Soyinka has the distinction of being the first continental African to win the Nobel Prize in an academic field, and the first black person worldwide to win the Literature Nobel Prize.

Other Africans who have won the Nobel Prize in an Academic field are either Arab or White South African.

Exactly!

And that is because our HND is too advanced, too prolonged, and an "over-syllabus" of what a true HND ought to be.

I make bold to say it anywhere, what the rest of the world considers as HND is what Nigeria already offers as OND. Also, what Nigeria offers as a 5yr Engineering or Science degree is M.Eng in the UK.

The question remains why we did this to ourselves?

University deals with mental ability and not technical. I rest my case
You are part of the problem that exist in Nigeria.

You mean after 2yrs of scholarship + 1yr of work experience + 2yrs of scholarship = HND, the HND graduate is still lesser than a 200 level university student?

You are indirectly saying the HND is equal to 100level / A' levels?

You mean after HND Mechanical Engineering or HND Architecture, it is only equal to A' levels or university 100 levels? You mean the subjects passed at A'levels/100 levels are at par with Accounting/Engineering/Architecture courses at HND level?

Why don't the universities issue HND certificates to their 100 levels student before progressing into 200 levels? Or why still keep polytechnics if you can achieve same competence with a university student who has just passed the 1st year?

You can now see why Nigeria is confused when people like you mistakenly get involved in the national education policy.

Do you know that in sane countries where the education policy does not result to your type of absurd mindset, that a 2yr university diploma should ordinarily qualify one for the remaining 2yrs of a 4yr university degree? Do you know that a 3yr Polytechnic HND should ordinarily qualify one for the remaining 1yr of a 4yr university degree?

You sound like the type that is happy that a department has never produced a 1st class graduate, and thinks it is a bragging right rather than a shame to the faculty of that department.

We are still dealing with the ignoble fact that Nigerians are spending more time than the rest of the world to acquire HND, or even B.Eng, coupled with the fact that it even takes longer to acquire HND than the superior B.Sc, and then you espouse another confusion of your own?

I'm perplexed by your reasoning. And it is the mindset that has continued to ruin things for Nigeria.
Education › Re: How To Make HND Equate Or Beat Bsc: HND Vs Bsc by Throwback: 7:53am On Nov 10, 2019
highbee02:
In a simple and clear term, HND doesn't take 5 years since u can decide to quit after your ND program. University programme is not run like that. Besides, there are aims and objectives for setting up various higher institutions of learning in Nigeria. ND & HND are technical certificates just d way we have NCE technical. Ask the policymakers and curriculum developers, they will explain better.
The term is not "deciding to quit after OND/ND", but "choosing not to enrol for HND".

However, once you decide to enrol for HND after the mandatory requirement of having a 2yr diploma and at least 1yr work experience, you would have spent a minimum of 5yrs to acquire the HND from the starting point of passing your WAEC O'levels.

If one achieves the HND from the 3yr NCE route with 1yr work experience, it would have taken 6yrs to attain from the starting point of passing WAEC O'levels.

So this begs the question why should an inferior qualification require more years to attain than the superior bachelor's degree of 4yrs that requires the same starting point qualification of WAEC O'levels?

Did UK not originate the HND that also feeds into the Bachelor's degree programme, yet it must always be achieved at 1year less than the university bachelor's? Same thing applies to British colonized Ghana and Kenya.

Whatever the external route taken to attain a Bachelor's, the total years of scholarship outside of the university in addition to the top-up years inside of the university, must be equal to the number of years it requires to attain such bachelor's by an entry level university student.

This is because the qualifying requirement for entry into the feeder institutions, and the requirements for entry into the university is the same O'levels. The feeder institutions only allow you to break your studies into parts/milestones that have their own certificates. You can then choose to stay off for some time before you continue to the next part, until you eventually close it out with the final part in a university.

Ultimately, you would have spent the same 4yrs of scholarship that a purely university path to the bachelor's degree would have afforded, except that you opted to take a route that allows you to break at different qualifying points, and work with those qualifications.

This is not applicable in Nigeria. Rather, a feeder qualification like the HND takes a minimum of 5yrs, when the university bachelor's it feeds into takes 4yrs from the same O'levels start point.

It is for this anomaly of earning HND at a year more than a B.Sc instead of a year lesser, that you have all the arguments about equality vs superiority between HND and B.Sc. An argument that does not exist in UK, Ghana or Kenya, because such anomaly does not exist in those countries between their HND and B.Sc.

were u not awarded the ND certificate upon the completion of your 2 year programme? if Yes, u don't need to add that 2 to your 2 year HND programme. I spent 3 years pursuing NCE before my Bsc/Ed and M.ed. Does that mean d 3 years spent for NCE should be added or subtracted from my degree programme?
NB: I did both SIWES and TP due to the nature my course of study.
I still do not understand your argument.

Can one obtain HND without first obtaining OND or a 2yr University Diploma, plus minimum of 1yr work experience?

Does it not take a minimum of 5yrs to obtain HND post WAEC O'levels? Or does the HND exist in isolation and can be obtained without the initial OND?

As it takes 3yrs to obtain your NCE from an O'levels state, so does it take a minimum of 5yrs to obtain HND from an O'levels state. Both qualifications feed into the university degree at varying direct entry points.

That you took the NCE route to a university, is the same way some take the OND or HND route to a university Direct Entry, except you chose to start afresh from the entry level of a university programme.

The argument I have made on this topic is why should it take a student 5yrs to obtain the inferior HND when the superior B.Sc is 4yrs, when the starting point for both programmes is that you have the qualifying WAEC/O'levels certificate.

Do you need a PHD to deduce that an oil and gas job is an outlier when it comes to employment considerations?

In any case, opting to go for an OND job when the applicant boasts of a degree cannot help your case as what you have is a case of someone electing for under-employment as a survival strategy.

You should be talking about the career prospects of an HND and a degree holder starting out at the same time in this reference company of yours....
You made a blanket reference to the HND job opportunities as it concerns the present day labour market.

I illustrated your ignorance, then you want to change the goal post?

Did I not already allude in my illustration that the bachelor's degree holder would have to work in same industry to earn better?

So of what benefit is the Bachelor's degree when you earn at the entry level N3m p/a in an ICT firm and the HND guy working as entry level in Total gets a pay package above N30m p/a?

In such a factual scenario, what arguments do you make about the fruitlessness of the HND in the present day labour market?

Or you now agree that the present labour market still allows the HND graduate to lead a life of prosperity, just as a Bachelor's degree holder, and all that matters is time and chance?

I repeat to you, every qualification has a role to play in the overall design. Also, in the present labour market, opportunities abound for HND graduates to lead a life of prosperity from paid employment.

The D.E guys that joined us in 200l can't cope and they all made distinctions and upper credit in poly....na war to them...from UTME sef the difference is clear

University graduates are ahead of polytechnic graduates...
Do you know that the best graduate ever in Civil Engineering in Unilag, was also the best HND Civil Engineering graduate in Yabatech some years prior?

He only went to Unilag to obtain a paper certificate at his leisure, while his mates were battling tooth and nail to catch-up with his shadow.

This was simply because it was an unfair competition. How do you pair someone who has had 2yr OND + 1yr or more of work experience + 2yr HND, who finished as the very best, and put him in a university classroom with those who have just completed 2yrs of scholarship and were all now together in 300 level?

I even wonder why that dude had to waste his time for another 3yrs (300, 400, 500 levels) to acquire a bachelor's degree, when he could have just proceeded to the UK with his HND and be rightly placed in a final year of a sound university education. Yet it would still have been unfair as he could have had other HND top-up students from UK or Ghana who only spent 3yrs post O'levels to acquire the same HND he had to spend 5yrs in Nigeria.

We really need to reconsider our education policy and the interplay between the different types of qualification.

If HND is so inferior, then why not make the years of scholarship inferior to the years required for a Bachelor's, like it is everywhere except Nigeria?

What have we benefitted by making our Nigerian B.Sc Computing/Computer Science a 5yr programme which hitherto was 4yrs?

Why spend 5yrs to study engineering in Nigeria when Ghana offers the same engineering as a 4yr course with the same WAEC O'levels written by both countries? Then you end up in a multinational oil firm working as an entry level engineer with your fellow WAEC Ghanaian who spent 1yr less than you to acquire the same Engineering degree in his country.

What are we hoping to achieve in relation to other countries in Africa and the world who spend less years of scholarship on the same course?

Is it that we have a national mental handicap that makes us slower to learning than Ghanaians or Kenyans or Britons?

Trust me, as long as you are working as a paid employee with your own Bachelor's degree outside of the oil industry, your economic status is poverty compared to those guys.

Or you want to claim not to have seen Bachelor's degree applicants on numerous job boards, also asking if they can also apply for the OND jobs that are advertised by some Oil companies?

Always busy fighting Bsc degree graduates.

These HND guys have inbred inferiority complex which makes them see Degree holders as being responsible for their stunted career growth.

The problem starts from the mind.
The problem starts from the education policy of the country.

Why should the inferior HND require more years of scholarship than the superior B.Sc, when both have the same O'levels requirement?

When the country structures the HND as it was designed by the UK, such problem that is peculiar to Nigeria will disappear.

A Nigerian with his 5yrs HND will still get the same multinational job with a Ghanaian or Briton with a 3yrs HND.

Same goes for the Nigerian Engineer with his 5yrs post O'levels B.Sc/B.Eng, still competing for the same entry level job with the Ghanaian or British Engineer with a 4yrs post O'levels B.Sc/B.Eng.

We are only being a foolish country, but rather than see the big picture of how we are hurting ourselves, we rather delight that others among us are more disenfranchised.

In addition, the HND top-up to B.Sc is a 1yr full time programme in the UK, because it considers that it is the final year of a Bachelor's degree that is missing in the HND, since it is only 1yr deficit in relation to a bachelor's programme.

However, in our own wicked part of this planet, after spending more years than a bachelor's programme to acquire the inferior HND, you are either admitted into the 3rd year (official national education policy) of a 4yr/5yr Bachelor's programme, or together with OND graduates into the 2nd year (school specific policy) of a 4yr/5yr Bachelor's programme.

In effect, you spend 5yrs to acquire the confused Nigerian version of HND, only to be equated by Nigerian universities to 1yr A'levels/university 100 levels/2yr OND.

A really weird education policy.

This is one of the issues that show how confused, clueless, and useless a country Nigeria is.

- Why do we have HND to be a 5yr programme post O'levels, while the superior general B.Sc/B.A is a 4yr programme post O'levels?

-Why is it that only the Nigerian HND requires 5yrs post O'levels to acquire?

UK HND is 3yrs post O'levels.
Ghana HND is 3yrs post O'levels.
Kenya Technical Diploma is 3yrs post O'levels.

None of the above countries, including UK that originated the HND, have the conflicts of superiority that exist in HND vs B.Sc/B.A.

That is because they are clearly defined and one act as a stepping stone to the other. The lesser qualification requires lower years of scholarship, while the superior qualification requires more years of scholarship.

But in Nigeria, you spend 5yrs to earn HND Accounting, but spend 4yrs to earn B.Sc Accounting.

A very confused education sector.

Some are even still asking stupid questions about the passport picture as if they were expecting a 1961 picture of Buhari to be on a document issued this very week?

Some have started claiming the scores from his school statement of result obtained during the last election season, is different from what is on this issued attestation. Their miserable eyes of deceit has began to deceive them to see only what will make them happy.

The most ridiculous commentary I've seen is one that complained that this newly issued result attestation is on a coloured paper as opposed to black and white that existed in 1961. Whoever told them this newly issued attestation was printed in 1961 with Buhari's current picture?

Throwback:
They have come with their stupid questions again about passport picture and whatnots.

So the jobless concern of PDP is that the attestation bears a recent picture as opposed to the no picture design that existed decades ago?

At least all those saddled with the burden of wailing aimlessly and tirelessly, have not claimed that Buhari did not have the already known grades that have now been re-documented.

I repeat for clarity, only a fool would expect that a recently issued document should mirror the template used decades ago, rather than mirror the template used as at the time of its reissue.

Did Buhari have those grades as contained in the school statement of result and the Cambridge result master sheet that was released during the last presidential campaign.

Yes! Case closed!

Did the result grades from the school and the master sheet tally with the result grades the military had publicly released as contained in their records, even though they could not find the certificate paper awarded for the said grades and claimed by Buhari to be with the military?

Did the exam and released result then in 1961, occur before his conscription into the Army, despite applying prior to sitting for the exam and for which the school principal gave a recommendation note for his consideration by the Army, who didn't go ahead to recruit before the exam and result were available?

Yes! Case closed!

Was it possible for Buhari to have provided this attestation when he swore to his affidavit and when this matter came up in 2014, when the new rule that allowed this attestation for the benefit of all affected Nigerians only came up late in 2015?

Yes! Case closed!
