selemempe:I don't need to show you what I watched live on TV. Maybe you were living in Cameroun when NLC of Oshiomhole and Civil Rights activists always protested every fuel price hike that Obasanjo and the likes of Gauis Obaseki and Funso Kupolokun of NNPC, always managed to engineer as a better alternative to fight bunkering of petroleum products earlier designated for Nigerian cities into other West African states. Or all his attempts to deregulate the price of petroleum products that resulted to higher pump prices. All those protests were championed from Lagos, with very active participation of Yoruba activists and academia. Even Ogun state residents also ensured that the state was locked down to comply with the no movement policy of those Sit-At-Home strikes. In fact, I remember specifically that for the 2012 protest, some news stations were reporting from Enugu, where Gov. Sullivan Chime took it upon himself to ensure that the state workers did not comply with the Labour unions, while there was no sign of protest at all. News footage from Bayelsa did not even show that we were in the same country with that state. Everything was going on normal, while those interviewed all said Labour and Civil Societies should show more understanding to the federal government. Yet when the victory of N85/Ltr was achieved from N140/Ltr, it was a victory for the whole of Nigeria. That was when I knew how badly the "our son" mentality that was so evident in that 2012 protest, had eroded the Nigerian unity to criticise and challenge a useless government. |
front4line:Indeed, Yorubas need to sensitize themselves about how they view the Igbos. A sensitization that will thoroughly explore our history with them in this country, their past antecedents, and their current attitudes. And most importantly, a sensitization towards their opinion about Yorubas. The anonymous nature of the internet, helped to reveal that many that one considered as friends are actually intent to have you suffer because they suffered for their own mistakes. No one should deceive himself about the potency of Igbo hatred for every tribe in Nigeria, where they live at peace and make a living without prejudice. Many are willing to accept the Igbos into their midst and interact with them and patronize their businesses, but the Igbo man remembers with anguish, the humiliation of unconditional surrender. That humiliation is what fuels the hatred and arrogance. |
Bane2020:Why is June 12 rubbish? Did the annulment of that election not eventually affect all the states of the federation who already had state governors and state legislators already discharging their duties? Did the annulment not affect all the federal senators and representatives who were already in office before that presidential election? Was it only the SW governors and SW state/federal parliamentarians that were sacked from office due to that annulment? Has your bitterness that shall so remain got you any leverage in Nigeria? That you majorly did not vote for Abiola who was a Southerner, but chose to vote for a Northerner because an Igbo would be the vice president in the typical fashion of North/SouthEast master-slave relationship that has existed in all democratic governments since 1960, did not mean Abiola should have been robbed of his victory after duly winning. Did that robbery not affect every democratic structure in Nigeria? Did the struggle that ensued from the annulment not help restore democratic structures in every part of Nigeria, including the SouthEast in 1999? Will you force the federal and state government establishments and private corporate establishments that all exist in the East to carry out official duties on a federal public holiday? Do you think your opinion is relevant at all concerning a federal public holiday? If a trader chooses to go to his shop on that day, it would not be anything new for a self employed entrepreneur to make his daily living as there has never been a curfew or restriction to movement on a public holiday. So you can choose to make some quick bucks that day. It is within your rights to celebrate any regional or state only public holiday. SouthWest governors have proven overtime that they understand the powers that the constitution already affords them to declare a state wide holiday, hence many Western states had routinely declared public holiday for June 12. The big question you should ask yourself after honest introspection, is what has stopped the SouthEast governors from having the courage to even declare May 30th as a Remembrance Day public holiday, to be celebrated within the state and by extension, the region? Why has the constitutional authority in the SouthEast not considered it worth celebrating, unlike the SouthWest governors who never wasted time to celebrate June 12 right from 1999 when we began this current democracy? |
selemempe:Mind you that 2012 was not the first time Nigerians would protest oil price increase since the current democracy. The factual news well reported from the SouthSouth and SouthEast, showed that the populace had no sympathies for labour and civil societies, regarding the strike and protest against the 2012 fuel price hike and subsidy removal. You might have been personally disgusted with GEJ, but to say many Igbos were disgusted by GEJ is belied by the support he always had from Igbos on most social media and socio- political gatherings. |
selemempe:More than 4 different oil protest and strikes occurred under the OBJ regime. The SouthWest was not relaxing in their homes while others were protesting, rather they were leading the protest. |
Nigeriabiafra80:There was no need for court as even the university senate objected to it. |
Nigeriabiafra80:Two totally different things. Let the Biafrans I saw on the news who were students of Unilag and were recorded saying that what nonsense name is Maulag or Moshood, that they don't want such a rubbish name, let them also protest about a holiday that is not within their power. Can one protest a holiday that the federal government has mandated? Hypocrisy is when all Nigerians protest oil price increments during the OBJ regime, but some suddenly embraced such increases without a protest, because their son was the president, as though the SouthWest that championed all the similar oil protests during the OBJ regime did not know he was their son. |
SalamRushdie:I will let you know why it was ill-advised. Firstly, Unilag has come a very very long way to have a change to its name and identity that is already well established both nationally and internationally. He took a decision that still did not acknowledge the significance of June 12 as ushering in our current democracy. He chose to take a decision that could be easily challenged by the ever unruly Nigerian students (very ill-advised). He wanted to honour Abiola, without any regard for the democratic significance of June 12 nationally, or without admitting that he won the election. There were governors already ruling, and there were state and federal parliamentarians who were all victims of the consequences of the annulment of that June 12 election. Abiola's conferment with the GCFR addresses a personal injury. June 12 as a recognised national holiday addresses a national agony. The SouthWest has always led the protest for any national cause, even when a Yoruba Obasanjo was President. The shame was that the SouthSouth and the SouthEast demonstrated a parochialism never seen before since the return to democracy, whereby some sections of the country were ready to accept anything from the government of their son, and chose to abstain from a national protest. Obasanjo never had that luxury from his own native SouthWest, for the many oil related protests and strikes that rocked his government. |
letusbepieces:I truly feel for your agony. This misery is too much for one man to bear alone. |
If only Reno was sensible enough to have advised Jonathan that this was a better honour that recognizes that Abiola won the election and staked his life for a noble cause that was both personal and nationalist, rather than attempting to rename Unilag which itself is an already established icon of our tertiary education. Did Reno ever berate Jonathan for his own desperation when he attempted to do similar political gimmick with an ill-advised renaming of Unilag? |
OsamaB:OK! Great that you clarified your doubt. |
CilicMarin:Jonathan was a moro.n who even with election defeat staring him squarely, still went to Enugu to lament that Buhari jailed Nwobodo for stealing money. I maintain that Jonathan was the chief campaigner for Buhari's electoral victory. |
CilicMarin:I am certain that Gani Fawehinmi would be disappointed in the political way that Buhari has been fighting corruption. Corruption fight that respects sacred cows and presidency officials. Buhari can do more, but has chosen not to do so. |
letusbepieces:It does not have to be Abiola day. Abiola has been given a personal recognition with the GCFR accorded posthumously. It is democracy day as a celebration of all those who participated in that historic election, regardless of who they voted, and a recognition of all those who sacrificed their freedom and lives to challenge the military dictatorship that annuled the election, and the military despot who incarcerated all those who dared to demand for justice and democracy. The struggle that June 12 inspired, led to the return to democracy in May 29, 1999. June 12 is Democracy Day, May 29 is Inauguration Day. |
MysteriousAnn:It is a reminder that the will of the majority people to choose their own leaders should not be vanquished by the few who find themselves in power. It is a reminder that some fought for this same democracy that others received on a platter, yet they have refused to let people enjoy their rights despite the democracy. A situation all the Presidents since then, including Buhari, have refused to correct. |
OsamaB:If you are implying that the National Assembly is mandated by the constitution to ratify it, then let the government tender the request to them if it is ascertained that it is the law. It will sure be interesting to see which of the legislators would object to it. |
It is certainly well deserved that this level of recognition was accorded to June 12. We will celebrate Inauguration Day on May 29th, but celebrate Democracy and the struggle for it on June 12th. |
There is no reason asking when it is a posthumous recognition. Can Achebe's ghost reject any recognition accorded him now? Abiola's family has always sought for this level and significance of recognition. They have always wanted their patriarch to be recognised as the winner of that election and that June 12 should be immortalized. They finally got it. |
escodotman:It is definitely political, but to deserving Nigerians. |
Well deserved! |
Metuh:What is stopping the SouthEast governors from officially declaring Remembrance day like the SouthWest Governors legally declared June12 since 1999? Is it that SE governors do not know they have the power to declare state holidays even if it is not nationally accepted, just as the SW governors have been doing before this national recognition? |
bigpicture001:June 12 is about Democratic franchise. The people chose a man in national election, to lead them as their president. He won but the election was cancelled. That the federal government finally recognizes that national victory and the democratic struggle that ensued and culminated in the 1999 return to democracy, is a thing to be celebrated by all Nigerians who cherish democratic franchise. Abiola as the winner of that election, represented the will of the Nigerian people to make their own choice. We do not know if he would have been a great or useless president, but the choice of the people was rejected by a few who had the power to trample on the rights of the majority. Whether Abiola was a saint or not, the people chose him, and the people have a right to choose who would lead them. The noble action that Obasanjo refused to take, was to recognize that day for its significance, and to formally acknowledge Abiola as winner of that election, even if not releasing the results officially. But he was too egoistic to do anything that would take away his own glory. Once again, shame on IBB. |
Asabe4:Hand over date has no business with democracy day. One is democracy day, the other is inauguration day. |
OsamaB:Where is it written that a democracy day has to be a handover date? |
I doubt this news is true. But if true, Buhari has really gone full scale sentimental and tokenist in a bid to secure his SW votes. It would be remembered that this was a noble action Obasanjo refused to do. Obasanjo would be shedding tears of shame now. It is good that a day the SW governors had legally declared special since 1999, has now been accepted by the federal government as a national holiday for the national mandate to rule that Abiola received by democratic votes, and for the national struggle that was precipitated by that irresponsible annulment. Shame to IBB. |
I wonder what Jonathan will say about the thief he refused to sack and prosecute, but was rather gifted a senatorial ticket after he dropped her from his cabinet over 1yr later. |
Is Saraki and Buhari not both Muslims? What the hell is MURIC's business with how government is run in tandem with checks and balances? Ishaq Akintola has always been a well known Muslim fundamentalist, but his recent foray into Islamic politics of Nigeria in the blind defence of Buhari a la CAN's Oritsejafor and the Jonathan regime, would ensure that he would lose any little regard previously accorded him for his fight for Muslim rights to overturn the secularity of the Nigerian state. |
We have all seen the inactivity and the squandermania government of PDP; nobody is disputing that. But I want PDP to be replaced with something better and positive not something worse that we will now regret later”Jonathan made Buhari who had failed 3 times to suddenly become electable. As it was a patriotic duty to sack Jonathan and PDP, so it is a patriotic task to sack Buhari and APC. We should stop wasting time discussing those who have caused our problems and who are products of a failed system, rather we should be discussing those who have ideas that can give us a country that is working. Moghalu, Durotoye, Sowore. |
Mikel Obi and Ighalo, then Troost-Ekong. Nothing spectacular about Iwobi. |
janeobasi24:Exactly my point. I know FUTO awards B.Eng for their engineering programme. |
In SouthAfrica, B.Tech is what we know as HND. As for those claiming all Federal Universities of Technology award B.Tech, does FUTO award B.Tech too? |
While Rochas has spoken out of selfishness for his own excessive nepotism, he is indeed right about John Oyegun. John Oyegun is arguably the most useless party chairman ever in Nigeria. He has been so useless I'm that role from the moment he was elected, and has contributed to all of the crisis that the Buhari executive has faced with the APC led National Assembly. His input in the internal party crisis that characterised many APC states have also been disastrous. |
