3. On your third point. Well, I do agree with you that perhaps, restrictions on getting South African visa should be reduced in the spirit of inter-continental trade and unity. However, you can imagine the influx of immigrants that would ensue if RSA were to open it's borders to everyone unrestricted. Africa is a festering mass of chronic poverty and inequality, in essence, it is a huge IDP camp sprawling across a continent. Allowing unrestricted entry would further strain RSA as a nation, pile up it's inequality issues and ultimately lead to chaos. As it is now, locals are already complaining and vandalizing properties, imagine what will happen if more African immigrants in a bid to seek greener pastures and escape the crushing poverty in their countries, flock into RSA in droves.
It is also to be noted that Nigeria has a very restricted visa acquisition process, getting a Nigerian visa is so hard that even as an American, you have to apply tirelessly and pay several rounds of levies to come here on a three months vacation. It is even harder for Africans who come from non-ECOWAS countries, and I think it is because of the same issues I earlier stated.
In conclusion, one thing we have to take note of in all of this is the fact that people are usually emotional about issues, that is why the masses are referred to as the hoi polloi. People most of the time do not know what is best for them, even when they do, they don't know how to get it. That is why a classical democracy is a tyranny of the majority,because the majority is subject to whatever social flux and emotions are prevailing at any given time.
That is why politicians take advantage of it and manipulate people, diverting attention from their own failings. Part of this is what we are seeing in South Africa today.
