Well, they scurried hither thither and raised 800,000 which was paid to the Hospital. That money did not touch the right cord, it did not melt their hardened heart. All or nothing was their stance.

Temistatics 007: Your statement is contradictory, the victims family were able to raise 800000 out of the 1.3m,but the hospital asked for full payment, they were still hustling for the remaining 500000 when the victim died,(MEANING:THE 800000 WAS STILL WITH THEM SINCE THE HOSPITAL WANTS A COMPLETE FEE OF 1.3M)SO HOW IS THE HOSPITAL GOING TO RETURN A MONEY THEY DID NOT COLLECT)I STAND TO BE CORRECTED,TO THE DISEASED,RIP.

Kayyy: @ sagamite, while you have a point, reality is most of these people using those funds to sponsor themselves abroad for treatment and the waste you call it are doing and would continue to do it as long as the status quo remains, it is the sorry state of our country, nobody is held responsible and they're not answerable to us at the moment (whether you agree with me or not), so if these people enjoy this benefits, how much more people that have shed blood and sweat for nigeria, the example of paul gascoigne in the UK as posted by someone below is a typical example of how you rally round a legend of the country. there was time where gascoinge was in the news for everything bad, neglected, but now he is appearing in the media once in a while after rehabilitation.

i'm also sure you remember maradona's weight issues and how the country rallied around him, and also how boca juniors brought him from no where and placed him in an important position in the club, that is what most people here are refering to.

I agree totally with you..am sure the two examples you mentioned above would have long gone into oblivion if they were to be Nigerians. The Maradona example is a nice illustration of how to recognise our heroes.

Leave the remaining balance for emmergencies. Insist that all sales from the shop go back into the business.
Aftre 1-2 yrs sell of the volkswagen you should have developed a good business mentality by then and you can start travelling to dubai/china for purchase and sales.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Re: Liverpool Vs Aston Villa (1 - 1) On April 7th 2012 by tjadeba(m): 7:08pm On Apr 08, 2012
daz_york:

Guy what is happening is very simple. Liverpool was once the most successful club in England. They got high off their success and became arrogant. Meanwhile, upstarts like Man United and Arsenal were catching up in terms of footballing culture and income generation. When the Premier League started, Man United then ran away with it, occasionally challenged by Arsenal. Liverpool were coming 3rd, 2nd, 4th consistently but never really challenging for the title. Yet they continued viewing themselves as the top dogs with their 18 league titles. Meanwhile Man U was expanding Old Trafford to 76,000, Arsenal was building a new stadium, Chelsea was expanding Stamford Bridge, and Man City got the rights to the 2002 Commonwealth games stadium (now the Etihad). Anfield remained at 45,000 capacity, but Liverpool FC refused to move into the future. Even when players like Michael Owen decided to move on to bigger clubs like Real Madrid, Liverpool still kept on deluding themselves that they were the biggest and best club in the world. Liverpool was the last club in the premier league to set up an official website. Initially the club resisted the idea, insisting that there was no need to adopt new modes of operation and connect with overseas fans - only the local (Scouse) fans mattered. Eventually after years of underachievement, they brought in a foreign manager for the first time, Gerard Houllier. He brought the club into the 21st century and in 2001 they won the UEFA cup along with the league cup and FA Cup. In 2004 after Houllier left, they brought in Rafa Benitez, a young successful manager who had broken the duopoly of Real Madrid and Barca in La Liga with Valencia two years in a row. They won the Champions League in 2005.

However, being the history-obsessed club that it is, many Liverpool fans and senior players felt that the LOCAL element was being sidelined, and that Rafa Benitez was destroying the HISTORY of Liverpool fc by bringing in new ideas and systems. He sacked all the old backroom staff and brought in his own modern Spanish staff like Rodolfo Borrell, the ex-Barca youth team coach. This made him very unpopular at the club even though on the pitch Liverpool was actually a force to be reckoned with for the first time in nearly 20 years (in 2008, Liverpool was ranked the no 1 team in Europe ahead of Barca and Madrid). Rafa was also having trouble with the new American owners who were taking money out of the club to fund their leveraged buyout. In 2010, despite reaching the semifinals of the Europa league and finishing four points off a champions league spot after losing Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid, Rafa Benitez was sacked with support from senior players like Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher.

After the Roy Hodgson debacle, Liverpool fc AGAIN refused to move forward into the 21st century and chose to appoint a club legend who had been out of the game for 15 years. Kenny Dalglish last managed a top flight team in England in 1996, and failed to get a Newcastle team packed with stars like Faustino Asprilla out of their Champions League group. He is also a manager who has no knowledge of football outside of Britain and as such tends to go for players already playing in the premier league or SPL. HE still subscribes to the 1980s formula for success with the 4-4-2 system, playing traditional wingers and a 'little and large' strike partnership. He tried to do this by spending £130 million in total on Andy Carroll, Luis Suarez, Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing. Of these signings, only Luis Suarez actually has an observable amount of basic footballing skill and talent. But the others being British players, they are hyped up the the UK media and built up as something more than the horrible mediocres that they actually are.

Liverpool fc is a club stuck in yesterday, obsessed with its glorious days in the 70s and 80s. It is completely anachronistic in every way, from its support for a racist player to its refusal to adapt from the ancient 4-4-2.
Simply put, it is an Aston Villa waiting to happen.

An official statement ought to have been issued to now and an official enquiry into the incident been put commission to ascertain some of the concerns here.

Enquiries on

* whether the Sargent went on the suicide mission on the instruction of s superior without the proper equipment

* Whether the bomb squad were adequately training to handle such mission and if not, the facilitator of the training brought to book

* Whether the police is equipped with modern bomb detonators

These and a lot more issues are things that should be looked into by the enquiry. But up till now,no word from official quarters.

Politics / Re: Do You Want The Fuel Subsidy Back? Please Vote Here: by tjadeba(m): 10:28am On Jan 13, 2012
The fuel deregulation policy will only achieve its aims and objectives of re-investing the proceeds into building infrastructures for Nigeria if the following are looked into.Without that,i do not think FG means well or are sincere and if they are sincere, they still do not know their actual problems.

1. Failed projects should be reviewed with a view to ascertaining what led to their failures i.e if it was due to corrupt practises on the side of the government or contractor, they should be brought to book to serve as deterrent to others in future projects. If it was due to bad frame work, then there needs to be a new frame work for awarding government contracts, otherwise we will still be rolling in circles. We were made to understand that there are about 20000 failed government projects. We wonder why all Obasanjo's projects have never seen the light of the day.The list is endless (Refinery turn around, Power projects, railway projects, road projects, water projects)

2. The spending pattern of government during election period should be looked into. Believe it or not, 2015 is around the corner and there is still a proposal Jonathan is selling to the electorate about the single 7 (or 6) year tenure for elected officials, which is all obvious that he wants to be in power for longer than necessary. We all know that a lot of money will definitely change hands during these period of lobbying. We all remember Obasanjo's Ghana must go bags during the third term debacle. This will definitely take a toll on government financed projects.

I have the feelings that these two factors most likely contribute to project failures and if they are not tackled, then nothing for the re-invested subsidy money o.These are the things that government has to look into before making ordinary Nigerians suffer today for a brighter tomorrow as proponents of the subsidy removal have said.

Finally,i want to know if the government have explored other methods of dealing with the corruption in the fuel subsidy programme, like having rigid mechanisms on ground for inspecting and paying oil marketers? It is still the duty of the government of the day to check corruption.I am of the view that government should not chicken out of its programmes because of corruption.Otherwise, they may not get anything done in future as all humans have the tendency to be corrupt, but checks put in place by authorities are binding.I fear there would be a time when government will say they will deregulate health care and education because they cannot fight the corruption in there.I think its just weak of a leadership to admit that they are not capable of fighting corruption.
Politics / Re: Fuel Vouchers: A Better Way To Subsidize Fuel? by tjadeba(m): 5:00pm On Jan 10, 2012
The idea is good in that it will kind of spread national wealth evenly.Nigeria must start embracing the culture of distributing her wealth evenly as against the current structure that only puts the wealth on the table of quite a few.Although there is still room for refinement of the idea. These are the kind of ideas our president should appoint technocrats for while at the same time building infrastructure to sustain spending by creating opportunity for jobs and diversification of our economy away from oil.
Politics / Re: Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala And Sanusi On AIT Matters Arising by tjadeba(m): 1:50pm On Jan 10, 2012
Let us be sincere to ourselves on this issue and spare the use of academic economics to judge this situation. As it is now,if we give them a benefit of doubt and allow them carry on with this policy, will the average family (i.e papa, mama with average income plus their pikinssss) be able to withstand the attendant hardship? What happens to the poor people who constitute the majority? How would they survive in the face of the present reality?  I mean the prices of basic things have sky rocketed above the reach of these set of people. We cannot really call this situation an austerity measure as the people are already poor.

I do not think a right thinking leadership would like to see majority of its citizens eating from the dustbin and wearing rags thereby looking like people suffering from medical madness. The situation calls for the leadership to look at ways of making it very easy for average and poor families to survive the effect of inflation that will arise as a result of this policy even implementing it.

The reality of poverty is on ground and i do not feel mathematics, statistics and economics of fuel subsidy (both for and against) and budgetary allocation over the television will suffice at this time.

We need to be active in fighting corruption. For instance, I don't get why no strike actions are called when elections are obviously rigged or in response to embezzlement. I hear PENGASSAN is going on strike over subsidy removal, I can't fathom why they haven't gone on strike demanding that the thieving oil minister be investigated or at the very least resign.

The subsidy programme is in itself an avenue for embezzlement, which I feel is the only reason it's lasted this long. Money is stolen through spending programmes. Ending it does not in itself increase corruption. The energy used in demanding that we keep spending money at the risk of repeating our 1980s experience should be spent fighting corruption. That's where our focus should be.

Means the time is not right to end subsidy on what affects us most (Petroleum) until corruption is at its barest minimum. That is the logic,if am right

It depends on each country but it is always at a rate lower than a country would otherwise get were it to find a private lender. The real problem  with the IMF is not the rate that they charge but the conditions they attach to compensate for the risks they have taken to give you loans which no other person will give you at all or at the rate they're charging.

The key point is that countries should manage their finances in a sustainable so as not to go bankrupt. The popular option for Govts is to spend money - salary increments, subsidies, airports, e.t.c. This is all well and good until, especially for a country like Nigeria that lives off oil, when your fortunes change and you can't afford these things.

Please re-phrase the emboldened part so i can understand properly.I seem not to get your logic there

If it is a known fact, no one will listen to the IMF, never mind borrow from it and it's role will be redundant. It defies logic to claim that by asking that we cut spending, this will increase the possibility of us going bankrupt. Being miserly doesn't make you go broke. In the 70s, we spent to our hearts delight, was it not Gowon that said then that he did not know what to do with our oil revenues. We had the Udorji awards, FESTAC 77, e.t.c

By the 80s when oil prices crashed, we became bankrupt and had to resort to the IMF as we were shut out by other lenders. In an ironic twist, like someone who blames the fire service for fires, we blamed the IMF for our being bankrupt.

Try this thought experiment, if you lend money, is it in your interest that the people who borrow from you suffer hardship? You want your money back and that's only possible if your borrowers are successful.

Now, I know you're going say that a lender has a vested interest in keeping countries borrowing. Even using that line of reasoning, economically developed countries borrow more not less. The US, the king of all borrowers, owes 15 trillion dollars in sovereign debt. So even if the IMF wants us to keep borrowing, it is in their interest that we keep growing wealthier so that our lending needs will be more.

Good analysis. Now in Nigeria;s case, what assurances do we have from the fools in power that money saved from the IMF policy will not be used to fund elections, pay elected officers and their retinue of aides fat salaries, embark on white elephant projects? Thereby going to same IMF to borrow because i know the IMF know our leaders to be corrupt

This is nonsense. The IMF only lends money to countries who have so much debt that they are no longer able to raise money by any other means. The IMF is therefore a lender of last resort. Blaming the IMF for the state of its borrowers is like blaming the Fire Service for fires because every time you see a building on fire, you see the fire service close by.

More thinking and less of the blame game will help Nigerians.

IMF lends money, thank you for the analysis! at what rate do those countries have to pay the debt?

are you thinking at all? you must be real confused.

as a matter of fact, this move will completely annihilate local production & Nigeria may have to depend solely on importation. 30% capacityty of our refineries may be reduced to 0%. the only advantage will be that since importation will be liberalised, market forces 'may' eventually (on the long run) reduce the pump price (tho insigniificantly -if they dont form a union or peg a price).

I'v been following this argument for sometime now. but I must confess that in as much as removing subsidy is not a bad idea, it is not at the moment a logical strategy in the Nigerian economy considering the paltry minimum wage. secondly, the endemic corruption within the system will only make things worse because funds generated will be grossly mis-managed. our leaders bask in ostentation, splurge money as they deem fit and I believe they will squander the funds as they have always done in the past. they are all cursed with extravagance. subsidy withdrawal will only generate more funds that will serve as water to the seed of corruption. you all sit back, watch, enjoy the ride and watch corruption soar as people will loot massively the proceeds from subsidy. contracts will be inflated, abandoned projects everywhere, many more contracts will not even be embarked on after more than half of the funds for such contracts have been allocated. favoritism, nepotism and god-fatherism will be the frame-work for the award of contracts. eventually, things will get tougher for Nigerians- as this projects will either not be executed or shoddily and shabbily done . only a disciplined and visionary government will utilize such proceeds judiciously. Nigeria has always been unlucky with rational leaders right from 1960. the deficiency continues till date with Badluck Jona (Gooluck Jona sorry) taking the cake.

He is here to extend his confusion like a contagious plague to the others. our government is VERY GOOD with projects and propositions appearing very sweet on paper, empty promises but when the time comes to deliver, you see them stuttering. dont be surprised when the proceeds from fuel subsidy is used to order for 3 private jets for each senator and double security votes for governors, e.t.c

Can anyone mention any country in the world were SAP/IMF/World bank policy work? Anywhere they go they leave the country impoverish and in hugh debt. A couple of years ago Argentina`s economy was bankrupt due to world bank policy. They have consistently tried to blackmail Malaysia to accept IMF policy by sponsoring former vice president Ahmed Ibrahim not until Malaysian Government under mahatir resisted them. Now ten years after Malaysian currency have been stable against the doller in ten years. 1 : 4.
If Malaysia have accepted their proposal their economy will have crumble by now.
Bottom line we must look inward and develop our economy base on our peculiarities not any world bank theorem. What IMF policy did china used? I believe in free market economy, but model from our own peculiarities. NO AMOUNT OF SUBSIDY OR DEREGULATION WILL SUCCEED IN NIGERIA IF WE DO NOT TACKLE CORRUPTION AND CUT ON GOVERNMENT EXCESSES.

I sense this is a ploy by the western allies to further impoverish African nations. And in my lay man's economic reasoning,i don not think that it would be cheaper to refine oil in Nigeria until the basics(light, good road network, tax waivers on raw materials) are put in place, in other words,we will continue to rely on the imported commodity. With a benefit of hindsight, western allies have never and will never have the love of African nations at heart.I dont even beleive the situation is going to be a win-win one (Nigeria-west) as we are going to be on the losing side with the present arrangement. Fact is that our follow-follow economic West's economic model  have been besetting Nigeria. Our government and its apologists do not take much time to study the nitty gritty  of this model to see how it affects us as a nation. We have our own peculiar problems which only peculiar answers could solve. The Asian Tigers as we have today searched within to solve their problems when the march to start building their nation started. They never had to always rely on the west's economic blue print to forge ahead. Please anyone in doubt should read about Singapore and South Korea's development from the 60s through 90s. I am not saying there was not a time when these Asian countries tightened their belts for national growth, but there was zero tolerance for corruption and the sacrifices were borne by all and sundry unlike in our own situation now where it is still business (extravagant lifestyle) as usual. Our leaders need to think deeply to assess our problems and address it by ourselves. I think lateral thinking is still missing in the heads of our present leaders and infact it is an aberration.
