General Mohammadu Buhari, leader of the yet to be registered All Progressives Congress, APC, which is hoping to benefit from the numerical strength of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, and presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, in the 2011 presidential election has accused ACN governors of corruption. Spokesman for Gen. Buhari and chieftain of the Save Nigeria Group, Mr. Yinka Odumakin alleged that Governors of the ACN award one Kilometer of Road construction for N1 Billion. Odumakin said, “I can tell you authoritatively that the most dangerous and terrible tendency in Yoruba politics is the house of deceit that Tinubu represents.” The spokesman for Gen. Mohammadu Buhari recalled how he dragged former Governor Alao Akala to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for awarding One Kilometer of road forN50 Million and said most Yoruba leaders are “greedy.” Continuing, the spokesman for General Mohammadu Buhari said;“I can tell you authoritatively that the most dangerous and terrible tendency in Yoruba politics is the house of deceit that Tinubu represents. “Only those who have sold their souls will ignore this fact. There has never been any such greedy bunch in our nation; not even under the PDP.” “I took Akala before EFCC in 2010 for awarding roads at N50m per km in all the LGs in Oyo state. Today your Asiwaju is collecting N1b per km across the South-West. “When Tinubu turned 60 ACN states contributed N1b for a bash, nobody tried that in Yoruba land before. “Chief Adebanjo was chairman of AD in 1999 and not one relation of his got a ticket unlike your Tinubu, whose wife is a senator, son in law a Rep, Sister in law a House member in Lagos and daughter now Iyaloja via imposition . Your grouse with the old men may be for reasons you have not stated but you know they are far more honorable than a million Bola Tinubu.” Odumakin has been Buhari’s spokesman from the electioneering days in 2011; Gen. Buhari lost the election which triggered off violence in parts of the North. Critics believe that the electoral violence that claimed several lives, especially of NYSC members was caused by inciting comments by his supporters. there is one name in Africa that sparks more controversy, heightens emotion both of ardour and anger or breaks up a conversation more than TB Joshua, then tell me. Some express intense hatred towards him, so much so, that you would think he had personally inflicted all their woes and sorrows. On the contrary, others talk with such rapture about him that you would think they couldn't live without him. Who is this man that is constantly causing a stir, a rift in the breach, rippling the still waters? Who is this man who has become a topic of conversation from the mouths of the most impoverished to societies finest and elites? Who is this man who keeps ardent bloggers happily awake throughout the night (either attacking or defending him), knowing they have to get up in the morning and monotonously trudge to their respective places of work? Who is this man who can utter a few words of "God says" and within seconds set the global computer village abuzz, some scoffing and misinterpreting, others gaping in admiration? One thing is clear, if there was no higher force or spirit behind his words, he would never reach the headlines, let alone become a household name. If what he said had never come to pass, he would have been dismissed long ago by all and sundry, his ministry severely diminishing, only retained by the foolish who know not the right from wrong. Only a lunatic would announce to the world what would happen, knowing that it was all a trick, a fraud, a deception. Looking at the antecedents of this man, it is evident that a higher hand is with him, in him, speaking and working through him. The question now is whether the force is of good or evil, whether inspired by God Almighty, the Creator of the whole earth, or Satan, the destroyer. The answer to this question cannot be thrust down your throat like parents trying to feed a stubborn child. Neither can it be subtly implied to you, like a conniver cunningly worming his way to your minds. No, it is by direct revelation, conviction and a word from God. If you have the opportunity to ask those who can categorically stand on the rooftops to defend this man, they will tell you that they received a revelation. They will probably also tell you of an initial battle of doubts raging before coming to the conviction that he is sent of God. President John Atta Mills of Ghana acknowledged the authenticity of this prophet -- that was why he humbled himself and visited him severally for prayer before his election to the highest seat in 2008. Because he saw TB Joshua as a man of God, he simply listened to advice and instruction and emerged victorious. Morgan Tsvangirai had got to a point of desperation where he realised that he needed divine intervention and guidance for the arduous task of trying to unseat President Mugabe. He has visited TB Joshua severally for prayer and advice. Cuthbert Dube, the president of Zifa found himself in a wheelchair before he realised that he needed prayer from a God-sent to his life. After praying he decided to come to The Synagogue Church Of All Nations and visit TB Joshua for a healing prayer. Sure enough, he came back, walking, his wheelchair condemned to a state of disuse. The newly sworn in Malawian President Joyce Banda recognised all too clearly that the huge demands of such a political office are beyond her physical and mental strength to handle. Long before she was assumed presidency, she visited The SCOAN, eager for prayers for God's guidance and protection. Her husband, weakened to a state where he could not function normally also visited TB Joshua for prayer and he came back striding confidently as if all the world was supporting him. These are just a few of the people who have visited TB Joshua. The latest online frenzy with this man prompted fierce debate among his friends and foes. He predicted the sudden death of an African head of state in April, and Bingu wa Mutharika of Malawi, passed away on April 5. Each of TB Joshua's international prophecies are uploaded onto the Church's website, with the confirmation of their fulfilment. Astounding healings and shocking deliverance from evil spirits are also found on his website. Watching TB Joshua and the wise men, five trainee prophets under him, is the last thing from being boring. If you are the traditional type, be warned that it might ruffle your feathers. And if you are the lukewarm type, be warned that it might force you to repentance. If you are the doubting type, get ready for your doubts to meet their match. If you are the light-hearted type, get ready, you may laugh tirelessly. A final advice -- watch TB Joshua's TV channel and if possible, go visit him at his church in Nigeria. Come to your own conclusions; don't succumb to the pressure of those around you. If he is God-sent, then he could be God-sent to you or to your nation. Consider this before you open your mouth, words are cheap. Source:http://m.allafrica.com/stories/201204120348.html/ |

10 Reasons Why America Loves Emmanuel TV! We all would agree that Emmanuel TV is living beyond it’s purpose to change lives, change nations, and change the world. Today, Friday, March 8th, Emmanuel TV is celebrating their 7th birthday. We are thankful to God for giving this vision to His servant Prophet TB Joshua to spread the Gospel through the medium of Emmanuel TV. Here are 10 reasons America loves Emmanuel TV! 1. Faith Building Testimonies . Testimonies are the articles of faith that help us defeat Satan. Scripture says, “We overcome Satan by our testimony…” (Rev 12:11). Testimonies of healing from incurable disease like HIV and cancer go very far to build our faith. The most amazing part is that testimonies come with before and after medical reports to prove the person is completely healed. NO ONE these days does that and this shows how the power of God is real. 2. Deliverance From Demons. Satan is our common enemy, the author of different afflictions. Modern christianity avoids the notion about demons. The Fire of Holy Spirit at SCOAN exposes and expels evil spirits. When demons confess, it gives us insight into the realm of the demonic. How satan uses things like video games, Facebook, internet, sin and etc. to influence this generation. 3. Personal Prophecies That Reveal The Root Cause Of Our Problems. How Man of God speaks very accurate prophecies to individuals which brings total restoration in ones life. Issues that many ministers would not talk about like sex, money, curses, career etc. Prophecies on Emmanuel TV don’t just bring encouragement but reveal the root cause of peoples problems and put an end to their dilemmas. 4. Importance Of Our Dreams. In our generation many neglect their dreams but how we see on Emmanuel TV that satan uses that to enter into peoples lives. In the Bible we see many times how God spoke to people through the dreams and we should not neglect but rather ask God to use it for His glory. 5. Christ Centered Teaching. Simple but deep and profound. Prophet TB Joshua always preaches the whole counsel of God. Not just on certain subjects like prosperity, blessing and feeling good, but truths like holiness, righteousness, judgement, evangelism and repentance. 6. More For Others, Less For Ourselves. Charity in SCOAN really shows the world an example of how to be Christ like. To reach out to the fatherless, needy, less fortunate, those who are neglected by society. This inspires the whole world to do good to change the bad we see in our communities. 7. God Can Use Any Medium To Express Himself. As it was so it is. In the lives of Jesus and Apostles how God expressed himself through medium like water, handkerchiefs, shadow and etc. We see clearly on Emmanuel TV that God uses mediums like Anointing Water, Anointing Sticker, Handkerchief, and much more to express His power. The way and the manner God works in ones life differs. 8. How Man of God Models Forgiveness Toward His Accusers . Forgiveness is clearly shown toward those who falsely accused, betrayed and blackmailed the ministry and Man of God. This shows no matter how big or small you are, we should forgive because we were forgiven. 9. World Wide Prophecies. Man of God would stand in the congregation and prophecy events that are happening in USA, ASIA, AFRICA, EUROPE and much more. Like in Amos 3:7 tells us that God does nothing without first revealing it to His servants, the Prophets. Some might say that the world is coming to an end, but Emmanuel TV shows us that God who owns our future, present and past will not leave us without a solution. 10. Man of God Always Prays for Viewers. We have seen many testimonies of people who were healed, blessed, delivered and saved through Emmanuel TV. This shows like Man of God says distance is not a barrier for Jesus. Viewers all over the world who are not present in the service still get to partake of the power of God through the prayers of Man of God. Keep Watching Emmanuel TV! emmanuel.tv Culled from:watchjoshua. |
Deputy Senate President in the defunct second republic, Abubakar Mamman Danmusa, has declared that the President Godluck Jonathan’s administration will lead to total anarchy. Danmusa while speaking to newsmen in Katsina recently called on Jonathan to “rethink the way he is leading Nigeria to total anarchy” noting that the president has failed to face the realities before him. According to him, “This country really is sliding to anarchy because I think that right now, Nigerians are tired of talking about looting, not corruption, and almost all our institutions have collapsed. Yet, the government has continued to get external loans,” he said. “Instead of facing realities, he is talking about South-South conference, middle belt forum, just to prepare for 2015. He is refusing to draw a lesson. There is a limit to which Nigerians can tolerate bad leaders,” he added. Danmusa said that with the current spate of insecurity, the president ought to have concentrated on how to make life meaningful for Nigerians “but as you can see, it is either Edwin Clark calling for southern leaders meeting or Solomon Lar calling for middle belt forum.” He urged the president not to over- stretch his luck as according to him, people without sense of direction could be dangerous once the situation reached a certain limit, insisting that the nation has fulfilled all the conditions for a revolution. On the ability of the All Progressive Congress,APC,to oust the ruling PDP in 2015, Danmusa said he was skeptical even as he faulted the composition of the interim leadership of the party. “It is our hope to wrest power from the PDP but I doubt much from the personalities involved and the composition of its leadership because I know them personally so I don’t think so, but I hope that my prediction will not come to pass. …N40 Billion Disappears, Jets To London To Party Few weeks to the expiration of their tenure, members of the Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, have jetted out of the country to England after allegedly looting the treasury, awarding contracts to themselves for the procurement of Fire trucks to the tune of N999.5 Million to each. This is even as another allegation surfaced that while over N40 Billion of the Commission funds have not been accounted for, the Managing Director, Dr. Chris Oboh commenced payment for over 135 contracts he awarded to himself that are yet to be executed. Under the law, the NDDC cannot award contracts exceeding N1 Billion without seeking the approval of the Bureau of Public Procurement, BPP. But the Board members allegedly split the contracts, awarding it to themselves for N999.5 Million to beat the BPP. They have allegedly jetted out to London to process the payments through the offshore account of the NDDC and organize a end of tenure party, a petition sent to President Goodluck Jonathan alleges. The petition sent to President Goodluck Jonathan alleged that about 400 projects have been awarded in advance and payments being processed to beat the expiration of the current board tenure. The petition signed by: Prof. Tari WilsonEze, (Dr.) Nnamdi Dike-Ubani, Mr. Pascal ChinwoObong, (Engr.) Udoette Iniobong Effiong, Chief. Koko Ngeribara, Dr. Kewe Osiebe Mrs. Lorrieta Osadebe and Deacon. Precious Hart reads: “The anti-corruption campaign of the Goodluck Jonathan administration is a shameful gospel that must never be preached. The extent of impunity displayed by public officers appointed by the president has been to say the least, extreme. The crass corruption of the members of the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission is shameful, and it is the most embarrassingly soiled chevron on the president’s insignia. “The board of the Niger Delta Development Commission has in the last six weeks commenced the full blown looting of the commission. Only last week on June 18, 2013, each board member was awarded a supply job worth N1billion as severance package and they have been paid 100 per cent upfront (not 15% as prescribed by the procurement act). “These projects were secretly awarded and did not go through any due process. Amongst the equipment procured under the emergency procurement provision are 40 fire trucks, which will be distributed to the states on delivery. This secret payment was effected through the NDDC foreign account . “Apart from that, about 400 additional projects have been awarded in advance by the current board from the 2013 budget (which is yet to be appropriated and released by the national assembly). “Sadly, hundreds of projects remain stalled and unpaid for. Over 200 completed projects are lying on the Managing Director’s table unpaid. These projects were shoved aside to create room and funds to accommodate the massive looting which is on-going in the commission presently. The Managing Director has told contractors that they should take their non-payment query to the president who has bluntly refused to release monies owed the commission. “Your Excellency, the 2013 budget is yet to be passed but as at the 3rd day of June 2013, over 200 projects have been awarded from the line items and non-line budgetary components of the 2013 budget tagged – Corporate Social Responsibility budget. The implication of this act of sabotage is that though the 2013 budget has not been passed, the existing board has already enormously encumbered the budget with funds meant to be for the payment for on-going projects, especially the completed ones for which contractors borrowed monies from banks to execute. “Under the current board expected to vacate office in a couple of weeks, about 2500 projects have been awarded. This surpasses the total number of projects awarded by previous boards in the last 5 years. “Also very worrisome is the fact that the Managing Director is currently making full payments for his over 135 contracts awarded to himself fully even when the contractors are yet to move to site. This is made possible by the Managing Director’s point man and kinsman, the Director Project Monitoring and Supervision who he recently placed in that position to pave way for massive looting. “Finally, as we write this petition to the president, all key members of the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission have embarked on a trip to the United Kingdom for a party, after which they plan to share their severance loot – an event they have called ‘final empowerment’, as payments instructions will be made to the bank and delivered by hand by the Managing Director. “Over 40 billion naira in the commission as at present has not been accounted for; even the offshore accounts of the commission have been carelessly transferred to private accounts. We are surprised that the President is not aware of this and nothing has been done so far to check these fraudulent acts. “Mr. President, the Region is yet to feel the impact of the NDDC under your leadership. The agency under the leadership of Dr. Chris Oboh has been a huge disappointment and colossal failure. The crass incompetence of the Chairman and members of the board has been a rude slap on the scarred face of our people, and immediate steps must be taken to address the unbelievable poverty ravishing the land.” “While some people close to you continue to quietly abet this corruption, it is important to note the sad role of the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) and some national assembly members and aides to the President in this sordid mess. Senator Pius Anyim and Engr. Emeka Eze have showed a severe level of indifference in the overall performance of this board, and the reason is clear. They have become the biggest contractors of the commission, fronting aides for several multi-billion contracts. We have all the details. “After almost 18 months of this impotent team, no major project – road, water or electricity projects were completed or commissioned. Contractors have abandoned almost all sites because the commission in the last eight months have only been paying for projects belonging to board members. It is shameful that only about 24 nos 1km roads and few other projects have been completed during their tenure. The performance statistics has been terrible: Awarded projects 4,204 Awarded by this board 2,350 Major projects completed (1bn and above) 0 Minor projects completed by this board 24 Ongoing but stagnated for lack of payment 890 Stalled 1,145 Abandoned 1,056 Our prayers are as follows: 1. The immediate sack of Engr. Emeka Eze the grand conspirator and launderer of the evil perpetuated by the current board of the Niger Delta Development Commission. 2. The accelerated removal or dismissal of the board led Dr. Tarila Tebipah and Dr. Chris Oboh. Any extra day saved the Region is a bliss. 3. The immediate cancellation of new projects awarded by the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission from late 2012 and the CSR component of the 2013 budget which has not been passed into law. 4. An immediate order to probe all contracts awarded and payments made by the this board since their inception till date. 5. A public enquiry to probe the board on it performance. 6. The immediate payment of all contractors whose payment invoices (IPC’s) have been lying on the MD’s table for several months in careless non-adherence to the provisions of the procurement act which states that payment invoices or IPC’s must not be delayed for more than 8 weeks from the date of submission of invoice. Mr. President our final plea is that you show more concern and get involved in the affairs of the Region. Hand pick the board of the NDDC yourself and do not rely on political associates or party affiliates. Whatever process that produced this board is complete hazard and must not be repeated. Long Live Mr. President; Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria! Signed: Prof. Tari Wilson Eze (Dr.) Nnamdi Dike-Ubani Mr. Pascal Chinwo Obong (Engr.) Udoette Iniobong Effiong Chief. Koko Ngeribara Dr. Kewe Osiebe Mrs. Lorrieta Osadebe Deacon. Precious Hart Source:pointblanknews.com/pbn/exclusive/massive-looting-in-nddc-as-board-members-get-n999-5-million-contract-each/ |
A coalition of self-determination groups in Yorubaland, under the aegis of O’Odua Nationalist Coalition (ONAC), has declared that the plan to forge an electoral alliance between the Hausa-Fulani North and the Yoruba of the South West cannot help the Yoruba’s quest for restructuring of the Nigerian polity. The group, in a statement on Wednesday, insisted that any alliance between the conservative Hausa-Fulani and the progressive Yorubas of the South West ahead of the 2015 elections could only benefit the North, which, it said, was not interested in restructuring the polity. In the statement by ONAC’s Assistant Publicity Secretary, Mr Ayoola Ajayi, the group said that the Nigerian “Garrison” must be restructured to ensure self-determination and resource control by ethnic nationalities. The group stated that rather than support the northern bid to return to power, the Yoruba should sponsor General Alani Akinrinade as a presidential hopeful in 2015. According to the group, Yoruba’s great thinker, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, did not at any time contemplate an alliance with the north because he knew it would be counterproductive. It said: “The alliance of the Yoruba people should be with progressive and pro-restructuring forces in the middle-belt, the South-South and the South-East.” “The Hausa-Fulani North will forever repel any attempt to restructure Nigeria. Our alliance should not be with feudalists. Any alliance with the Taliban will be ferociously repelled by the Yoruba population. ONAC will embark on a house-to house campaign against the Talibanisation of the South West.” Source:tribune.com.ng/news2013/en/news/item/14776-2015-alliance-with-north-won’t-help-yoruba-—oodua-coalition.html |

Mr. Tambuwal, who was at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Tuesday night for a meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan and other members of the PDP National Caucus, said he was the President’s property. At the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, President Jonathan dragged Mr. Tambuwal before television cameras prior to the National Working Committee (NWC) closed-door meeting. The President took the action in an apparent attempt to get the Speaker to dispel widespread speculations that he was romancing with the opposition elements with whom he had been photographed together on many occasions in recent times. As they walked into the hall alongside Vice President Namadi Sambo, Tony Anenih, Bamanga Tukur and Secretary to Government of the Federation, (SGF) Pius Ayim, they were confronted with a battery of cameras. Realising that the Speaker was shying away from the spotlight, President Jonathan playfully and physically dragged him, telling him to show his face to the cameras. He asked him: “Why are you hiding? They want to see your face.” Amid laughter, Mr. Tambuwal replied: “I am not hiding your Excellency. I am your property.” Thereafter, they proceeded to the venue of the meeting which started at about 9.00pm. Source:channelstv.com.I am-your-property-tambuwal-tells-jonathan/ |

Arsenal have reportedly been given the green light to make a formal offer for Man United striker Wayne Rooney following tentative discussions with representatives of the Man United striker. The 27 year old made a verbal request to leave the Old Trafford side at the tail end of the last campaign and was subsequently left out of Sir Alex Ferguson’s starting eleven for the club’s last three Premier League fixtures of 2012/13, leaving many to ponder whether the former Everton man had a future at Man United. Arsene Wenger has publicly stated his interest in Wayne Rooney and is ready to offer the England man a role as Arsenal’s central striking option, a position the Man United man lost following the arrival of Robin Van Persie at the club last summer. PSG, Real Madrid and Chelsea are also said to be keen on signing Rooney but the Man United man is said to be interested in the prospect of working under Wenger and is open to a move to London, more so than any potential move overseas. culled from:caughtoffside.com |
1.The world does not stop just because you’re having a bad day. It is understandable if you’re having a bad day to take some time for yourself, but you can’t expect for the world to stop spinning just because you do. There are some occasions that you can take a moment from it, but just by blowing important things off, just because you’re mad/sad/ annoyed, doesn’t fly. Especially if you have something very important to do,because not everyone is patient to wait for you to get out of your funk or get yourself together. 2.“You are not a unique snowflake”. There is only one “you,” however, if you’re sitting back and thinking: ”I know I’m going to make it because no one can do it like me,” that’s when you’re sadly mistaken. Yes, you do have an amazing talent, but you’re not the only one with it. To succeed in life, if you can’t rest on the fact that you’re the best at something. You have to also strive, work hard, and be personable. Yeah, you might be able to do something fantastic, but always remember that there is someone else who can always take your place if need be. 3.Do not become comfortable in dysfunction. Life is extremely crazy sometimes and sometimes when you’re trying to learn how to roll with the punches, you end up allowing yourself to stay in an unhealthy situation due to laziness. Now it’s true that you can’t spell “dysfunctional” without “fun,” but too much “fun” can be bad for you. If you’re in a bad relationship, or poor situation in your life, don’t become comfortable in it. You definitely deserve better in your life. 4.Two half people do not make a whole person. As humans we are meant to be social creatures, and wanting to be in a romantic relationship is expected. However, if you feel as if you are a hurt and broken person, trying to be in a relationship should not be a means for you to feel better about yourself. It’s even worse when you try to get into a relationship with someone who is just as broken as you are. Just because you two find each other, doesn’t mean that you should be together. Make sure that you’re in a better, more whole place first before you enter into a relationship with someone else. 5.“Scared money don’t make money. When trying to go after your dream job, it can be extremely terrifying, and a lot of times we can talk ourselves out of something. However, letting your fear consume you only hinders you and your ability to succeed. You have to want it more than you are afraid of it. Only then will you be able to succeed. 6.All criticism isn’t “hate”. Yes, you are amazing, wonderful, and fabulous, but just because someone points out a flaw doesn’t mean that they’re hating on you. There will be people who will only want to point out your weaknesses so they can feel better about themselves, but just because someone criticizes you (especially if it’s constructive) doesn’t mean that you should dismiss it. See it as something to help you improve yourself. Even if they are trying to hate, use it as a means to better yourself. 7.Sometimes it’s not everyone else. There’s a story of a man who went to a friend’s house, but shortly left after he smelled a foul smell. He went to another friend’s house, and left for the same offense. After visiting multiple friends’ homes and deeming them disgusting, he goes to his house, to find that the odor was at his house. Turns out the source of the odor was Something foul that he stepped in and carried into each house. Remember that when you’re thinking that there’s something wrong with everyone else in the world, that’s the moment you need to check yourself and make sure that you’re not playing a role in the craziness. Remember what Albert Einstein said: ”Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” If your personality persists and you keep on losing friends in new relationships, that’s when introspection is needed. 8.Sometimes closure is a solitary act. It would be nice if life was like the movies, or television shows, where you can get answers to how and why certain things happened, or why people do what they do. However, life isn’t like that, and obsessing over the fact someone hurt you is doing more harm to you than them. If you feel like getting answers will help you to heal, then go for it. However, sometimes you have to get your closure on your own. 9.Keep your name good in these streets. You will not be be best friends with everyone, but you should be at least on a cordial tip with most, because especially in this day and age, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. |
The deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha yesterday incurred the anger of majority of members at Tuesday’s plenary, when he ruled in favour of a bill seeking to water down the process of impeaching the president and his vice. Contributing on the floor of the House, most of them spoke against tempering with the provisions, indicating that they were not favourably disposed to the proposed amendment. It was obvious that most of them spoke against it. In reaction to his ruling that the ‘ayes’ had it when it was obvious that the ‘nays’ had it when he put the question at the end of debate on the general principles of the bill, most members who condemned the bill sponsored by Hon. Yakubu Dogara, (PDP Bauchi State) walked out before it was read a second time. During debate on the general principles of the bill, the majority leader, Hon. Mulikat Akande-Adeola, (PDP Oyo State), deputy majority leader, Hon. Leo Ogor, (PDP Delta State) and the minority leader, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, (ACN Lagos State) all said that section 143 of the 1999 Constitution which the bills seek to amend should be left as it is. Apart from the fact that the relevant section of the 1999 Constitution had taken care of the process to impeach the President and his Vice, the Minority Leader warned that the timing of the Bill was wrong because according to him, Nigerians could interpret it that the House wants to impeach President Goodluck Jonathan. “I stand to congratulate my colleague, Hon. Yakubu Dogara for the well researched bill, but notwithstanding the fact that the provisions of section 143 of the 1999 Constitution on the issue of impeachment of the president and his vice was not ambiguous, the timing is also wrong because Nigerians may interpret it in a negative way”, he said. Also contributing to the debate, Hon. Uzor Azubuike, Hon. Uzoma Abonta and Hon. Betty Apiafi added voice to say that it was wrong to water down the process of impeachment of the president and his vice, adding that according to the provisions of section 143 of the 1999 Constitution, there is no ambiguity in the powers of the House of Representatives to impeach the president and his vice. The short title of the bill is: A bill for an Act to alter the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, to remove the ambiguity in the process of removal of the president and the vice president from office on allegation of gross misconduct and to provide for a more transparent and democratic procedure for impeachment and for other matters connected thereto. The World Health Organisation, WHO, has said 77 percent of women in Nigeria use skin- lightening products, the world’s highest percentage. The figure compares with 59 percent in Togo, and 27 percent in Senegal. The WHO report said the reasons for this are varied but most people said they use skin- lighteners because they want “white skin”. WHO also said skin bleaching comes with hazardous health consequences. The dangers associated with the use of toxic compounds for skin bleaching include, blood cancers such as leukemia and cancers of the liver and kidneys, as well as severe skin conditions. It said hardcore bleachers use illegal ointments containing toxins like mercury, a metal that blocks production of melanin, which gives the skin its colour, but can also be toxic. The report said in many parts of Africa, lighter-skinned women are considered more beautiful and believed to be more successful and likely to find marriage. It also said it is not only women who are obsessed with bleaching their skins. Some men too are involved in the practice. * In extreme cases of skin bleaching, the skin can become multi-coloured and marred with inflammation or scarring. WHO investigation said lightening creams are not effectively regulated in Nigeria where even roadside vendors sell tubes and plastic bags of powders and ointments from cardboard boxes stacked along sidewalks in market districts. Many of the tubes are unlabelled as to their actual ingredients. Qatar based Al Jazeera also reported that business is booming for shops selling skin- lightening products. A trader said, “About 90 percent of my clients come asking for skin whitening products,” adding “I sell it to them and give advice on what product is best for them and how to use them.” Source:Vanguardngr.com/2013/06/nigerian-women-lead-in-skin-bleaching-who/ |
ABUJA—Aggrieved medical students of the University of Abuja have once again stage a protest over failure of the authorities to put an end to their plights and demanded N10million compensation for each student for wasted years in the institution. The students, who disrupted activities within the main campus and environs, barricaded the highway, disrupting flow of traffic. Wielding placards with such inscriptions as “8 years and still in 300 level.” Without MBBS exams since 2005,” the students said their request to be transferred to other institutions as their counterparts in the affected departments had been kept in the cooler, saying time was running out. The angry students described their plights as a deliberate move on the part of the management of the institution and the federal government to frustrate their graduation from the institution. They also demanded a compensation of N10 million each per student of the medical department for the years wasted. The students explained that the N10 million compensation evolved from cost incurred by each student in the past eight years, including tuition and off- campus accommodation cost of up to N200,000 per year. The medical students demanded to be transferred to other universities, complaining they were tired of the school authorities, saying they had been “lying to us, deceiving us, wasting our productive years.” The protest, which was largely peaceful, prompted the cancellation of examinations set for thousands of distance- learning students. Public Relation Officer of the university, Mr Waziri Garba, told Vanguard that a committee had been set up to investigate the matter and provide possible solutions. Garba said all efforts by the vice- chancellor of the university, Prof Joseph Sunday Adelabu, to meet with the students a day before the protest fell on deaf ears. He said students who wished to be transferred to other universities had to apply, stressing that their transfer must pass through the National Universities Commission. The Northern Governors Forum appears to be embroiled in fresh crisis over their individual positions in the recently concluded PDP special convention, which climaxed with the nomination of the President Goodluck Jonathan as the PDP presidential candidate. Meeting in Yola yesterday for the first time after the PDP convention, the forum was re-scheduled intermittently, as a quorum could not be formed, as the governors were said to still maintain divergent views over their respective support for the candidature of the President Jonathan. The meeting which was earlier scheduled for the Banquet Hall of the Government House, in Yola, was hurriedly relocated to the Sebore farms, Governor Murtala Nyako’s private farm ostensibly to await the arrival of more governors. At the end, only four governors showed up at the Yola forum, out of the expected 19. Those on ground included the host governor, Murtala Nyako, Gabriel Suswam of Benue, Sule Lamido of Jigawa and the out- going chairman of the forum, Mauzu Babangida Aliyu of Niger. About four other states comprising Kaduna, Sokoto, Bauchi and Taraba sent in their deputy governors. The governors of Kano and Borno, both elected on the platform of ANPP, are believed to have boycotted the meeting in protest over the undue introduction of PDP issues into the forum’s overall business. Sources at the consultative forum meeting which was held behind close doors, said the meeting was eventually adjourned because of the heat generated over the agenda even amongst the few governors present. Another issue that was said to have been on the agenda, was the retention of Dr. Halilu Abubakar as the chairman of the PDP. It was further gathered that the forum might eventually be postponed to allow for more consultations and to calm frayed nerves. Anxious journalists who had besieged the both venues of the meeting, the Banquet hall of government house and the Sebore farms were barred by the Aide de camp of Governor Murtala Nyako, ASP Hassan Sani Kankara. He directed that no journalists be allowed near the venue of the meeting. thisday-staging.portal.dmflex.net/articles/crisis-hits-northern-governors-forum/85480/ |
There were indications last night that former National Security Adviser, NSA, General Mohammed Aliyu Gusau (rtd); has links with the huge cache of arms stocked in an underground bunker in Kano which was busted by members of the Joint Task Force mid last week. The JTF last Thursday explained how an underground bunker in which large cache of arms and ammunition, which was being operated by a foreign terrorist cell was busted in Kano two days earlier. The spokesman, Lieutenant Ikedichi Iweha, disclosed this to journalists in a statement issued in Kano same day. From the arrests made so far, security sources disclosed that Gusau’s link to the Hezbollah group is being investigated following tips by “those we have arrested.” “We respect the former NSA highly. He is one man that has served this country in diverse capacities very well. But from statements made by the people we have arrested, we need to investigate more to be sure that no mistakes are made. “One link we can really use to reach the conclusion is this Fawaz man that is on the run. His children that usually patronise a popular night club in Garki spending huge sums of money have suddenly disappeared from public radar;” said one source. He added that “much progress is being made to arrest the run-away Lebanese businessman. According to Iweha, “on May 28, 2013 a combined team of the JTF involving the Nigerian Army of the 3 Brigade here in Kano and the Kano State DSS conducted a thorough search of this house located at No 3 Gaya Road off Bompai Road, Kano belonging to one Abdul Hassan Tahir Fadlalla, a Lebanese national who is currently out of the country. “After painstaking search of the whole premises, the search team uncovered an underground bunker in the master bedroom where a large quantity of assorted weapons and calibre were recovered. “The bunker was specially constructed for this purpose. It is worth mentioning to say that the weapons include weapons, rocket propelled guns, anti-tank/anti-personnel mines among other weapons. “All the weapons and ammunition recovered were properly concealed with several layers of concrete and placed in coolers, drums and bags neatly wrapped.” Maintaining that the discoveries were not accidental but the outcome of an ongoing robust counterterrorism investigation by the Department of the State Services Abuja in the past several months, Iweha stated that “the investigation also confirmed the existence of a Hezbollah foreign terrorist cell in Nigeria. Consequently, the DSS on May 16, 2013 arrested one Mustapha Fawaz, the co-owner of the popular Amigo Supermarket as well as the Wonderland Amusement Park, all in Abuja.” A number of arrests that started with an Abuja-based businessman on May 16 have been made with the military disclosing that the arrested suspects had confessed to have undergone Hezbollah training. “The owner of this property is…a Lebanese national. Unfortunately, he is not even in Nigeria. There is somebody who is very prominent; he has property in Abuja…. “He was arrested by the SSS early this month,” he said. “ There is also somebody…also a Lebanese national, who was arrested at the Malam Aminu Kano Airport, MAKIA on his way to (the Lebanese capital) Beirut. “He was having the sum of $60,000 on him, which he did not declare. It was after he was arrested that the money was found on him during investigation,” they added. Adding that Fawaz is now at large, Iweha said the arms and ammunition were targeted at facilities of Israel and Western interests in Nigeria. “However, security agencies are making frantic efforts to unveil the true situation. At the end of investigation, all those involved will be prosecuted,” the JTF spokesman said in the statement. Another security source who spoke to Nigerian Pilot on the matter, further added that the sealing of Abuja’s high profile superstore, Amigo Supermarket as well as top relaxation spot, Wonderland, also based in the federal capital city, was not just to track the co-owner who is said to be on the run, but to secure the places from any likely angst of the Nigerian public as well as for security reasons, “in case they have stocked either place with arms Source:nigerianpilot/kano-arms-cache-ex-nsa-gusau-fingered/ |
A plot to kill the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) led by Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has been uncovered. If it succeeds, the action will pave the way for the recognition of Governor Jonah Jang as chairman. It was gathered that some forces in the Presidency, in connivance with some governors, are trying to prevail on the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) to de-register the NGF. The plan is to, after the de- registration, declare the NGF being led by Amaechi as illegal. The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) on March 2, 2009 registered the NGF with a 12-man group of trustees, including Vice-President Namadi Sambo, then Kaduna State governor. Investigation by our correspondent revealed that some forces in the Presidency had been disturbed following the failure of the Jang faction to secure the backing of the majority of the NGF members last Thursday. The Jang faction had only 16 of the 36 governors behind it at the inauguration of its secretariat last Thursday in Abuja. The “shocking development” made anti-Amaechi forces in the Presidency to go back to the drawing board on how to force most of the governors to abandon Amaechi. One of the options being weighed is to deregister the NGF being led by Amaechi. To set the ground for the de- registration, one of the aggrieved governors had on Saturday claimed that the NGF Constitution with which the Forum was registered with the CAC was unknown to members. A source said: “The anti-Amaechi forces in the presidency have decided to make the NGF battle a do-or-die affair. They believe it is humiliating for 16 out of 36 governors to be following Jang about after the NGF poll. “They have just concluded a plot to deregister the authentic NGF being led by Amaechi in CAC. Their permutation is that once it is an illegal body, the governors will be forced to associate Source:article.com.ng/news/plot-to-deregister governors forum uncovered. |
The party said the president’s spokesperson thrive on deceit. The Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, has said slammed President Goodluck Jonathan for recognizing Plateau state governor, Jonah Jang, as the “chairman” of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, despite Mr. Jang having been defeated by his Rivers state counterpart, Chibuike Amaechi. The party said it is a travesty of democracy for Mr. Jonathan, who has repeatedly claimed not to have had any interest in, or backed any candidate for the forum’s election, to recognize Mr. Jang, even when the governor had lost to Mr. Amaechi in what has been widely acknowledged as a free, fair and transparent poll. In a statement issued in Osogbo on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, the party said the President’s “ill-advised” decision has shown that he has little or no respect for democracy, and will stop at nothing to jettison time-tested ideals on the altar of political opportunism. It said the recognition of the defeated candidate for the Chairmanship of the NGF has also shown that the president’s spokesmen either do not know the thinking of their principal or have chosen to engage in downright lies in his defence. ”President Jonathan is frittering away whatever is left of his credibility by the day,’” the party said. “His spokesman said in a statement the day after the NGF election that ‘the President has always shown a willingness to work harmoniously with any leadership freely and independently chosen by the Governors Forum for the collective progress and development of all sections of the country and will continue to do so. ”’President Jonathan trusts that as true democrats and respected national political leaders, members of the Governors Forum will quickly resolve the issues and differences amongst them which emerged yesterday (May 24th) and continue to contribute effectively to national development as a strong, and progressive body’. ACN however said ”…it is now clear that the presidency’s statement is not worth the paper on which it is written, that in the Nigerian presidency, words do not carry their exact meanings and that the spokesmen for the President speak for no one but themselves. When viewed in the context of similar deceitful statements by the presidency in the past, especially on the health of the First Lady, one can see a growing pattern of a lying presidency, a presidency that likes to hide behind one finger. This is sad, because without credibility, a president cannot govern successfully,” ACN said. The party said the president, who should be looked up to as the father of all, has become the father of a few “renegades”, and descended from being the President of Nigeria to the President of the PDP and now the President of a faction of the PDP. ”This President is daily cementing his unenviable reputation as the most divisive President in the history of Nigeria. By raising partisan politics to a pedestal higher than national interest, he has divided the country along religious, ethnic and political lines more than any of his predecessors,” the party said. ”In the process he has destroyed or about to destroy national institutions and organisations. First, he succumbed to the pressure from his party to deal with the judiciary for daring to reverse the outcome of some of PDP’s rigged polls. But for a courageous Chief Justice of Nigeria who cannot be teleguided now in the saddle, the judiciary will have been emasculated altogether ”Then the President all but put an end to the fight against corruption, which is widely acknowledged as a canker worm that is fast destroying the fabric of our society, and now he has destroyed the NGF. This is not an enviable legacy for any President,” it said. Source:premiumtimesng.com/news/national/137297-acn-slams-jonathan-for-backing-jangs-faction-of-ngf.html |
A Kogi State House of Assembly member, Friday Sanni, representing Igalamela/ Odolu constituency in the state was yesterday arrested and being interrogated at the Force Headquarters by a team led by AIG Ahmodu over allegations bordering on murder, thuggery and the setting up of a terrorist group known as “Ajana Mopol”. The House of Representatives recently passed a resolution compelling the inspector General of police to arrest and prosecute Friday Sanni, representing Igalamela/ Odolu constituency in the state House of Assembly, over allegations bordering on murder, thuggery and illegal setting up of a security outfit known as “Ajana Mopol”. According to the resolution, the Inspector General of Police was ordered to issue a warrant of arrest on the lawmaker, and cause him to appear before the Ethics and Public Petitions Committee of the House of Representatives to answer to the allegations The House of Representatives, it was gathered, was acting on a petition written by former minister of interior, Mr Humphrey Abba, stating that the lawmaker had in the past been declared wanted by the police over the allegations and wondered why the police were yet to arrest the lawmaker. But the lawmaker denied committing the crimes and headed for the court to seek an exparte injunction restraining the Inspector General of Police, the National Assembly or their agents from arresting, detaining and or summoning him before the House committee. In his ruling, Justice Ekwo Iyang, while granting the application held that the fundamental rights of the lawmaker must not in any way be threatened by allegations which have not been determined by the court of law. Justice Iyang declared that the status quo be retained and restrained the Inspector General of police, the state commissioner of police, Speaker of the House of Representative and or their agents from arresting, detaining or summoning the lawmaker before any committee. On getting the ex-parte order, the lawmaker fled to neighboring Ghana but arrested yesterday upon his return. Source:Spyghana.com/friday-sanni-arrested-over-terrorist-activities |

Indications emerged, Thursday, that the north might sanction prominent politicians from the region found to be fraternising with President Goodluck Jonathan with a view to scuttling its desire of occupying the Presidency in 2015. Vanguard learnt that the decision to clip the wings of northern politicians who were yet to see the need for the country’s top political office to revert to the region, was taken at a meeting of the Northern Elders’ Forum, NEF, during one of its recent meetings in one of the states, which is under the state of emergency. At the meeting, which had some governors and many elite from the north in attendance, strategies for voting out President Jonathan was elaborately discussed and agreed upon. It was learnt that one of the weapons to be applied in cajoling influential northerners particularly governors and lawmakers, in railroading into the northern agenda, is to brand the unwilling ones as ‘enemies’ of the region and expose them to public. Fraternising with Jonathan A member of the NEF, Prof Ango Abdullahi, confirmed the position of the north in an exclusive interview with Vanguard but declined to say how such action would work against top politicians, who were not voted into office by the forum. The former ABU vice chancellor, said that although the NEF had no power to remove such politicians from office, they had the prerogative to expose them as saboteurs of the north. Abdullahi said: “It is true that we are looking at those from the north, who are fraternising with Jonathan to stop us from getting the Presidency in 2015. I can say to you that appropriate steps will be taken at the appropriate time to deal with such moles known to be working with Jonathan against northern interest as far as the next election is concerned. “We are aware that some of our people, governors, lawmakers and ministers are working against the interest of the region because they don’t believe that we should produce the next president of Nigeria. If we cannot do anything to stop them, we can mobilise the people to see them as the enemies of the north.” Vanguard learnt that the NEF took the decision to sanction northern politicians working for Jonathan following the alleged persecution of Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State by the Presidency for reportedly having an ambition of pairing with his Jigawa counterpart, Sule Lamido, to run in 2015. Although the duo have consistently denied the rumour, their posters, suspected to be planted by opponents, have continued to flood major cities and towns, thereby exposing them to more trouble with the Presidency. Despite the fact that the President has not declared his intention to run, his soldiers particularly former militants, have already threatened to cause mayhem if Jonathan was not returned in 2015. While some men don’t want to settle down and claim a girlfriend, most men don’t need any “girl…friends” either. After all, what man wants to just “hang out” with a beautiful woman? That’s what his boys are for. It’s totally possible for men and women to be platonic friends, but that’s not normally how it starts. The man is attracted to a woman, he asks her out, and they spend time together. But then somewhere along the line, said man falls into the dreaded “friend zone” – and he has no idea how he got there. He’s not sure if she’s playing hard to get, or if he’s been hoodwinked – and while he’s trying to figure it all out, the woman knows exactly what she’s doing. If you’re not sure if you’re being played for a fool, here are some signs that she just might be using you. 1. You Are Her Personal Chauffeur You have a car…she doesn’t. This is not a big deal, and being the gentleman you are, you have no problem picking her up for dates. But after a while, you’re not just picking her up to go to the movies. You’re driving her to work, to her doctor’s appointment and even to her friends’ house. As a matter of fact, she asks you to drive her AND her friends around – to the club, the mall, wherever. But she’s attractive, so you do it, even if it’s totally out of your way. The way you see it, she’ll think you’re such a nice guy that she might even invite you INSIDE of her home one day. But she doesn’t, and you barely get a kiss on the cheek for all of the gas you’ve burnt up. If she’s given you ZERO indication that she’s even remotely physically attracted to you, then she’s using you for a ride. Unless you’ve at least gotten to second base, keep your car parked and let her figure out how to get around herself. 2. You’re Her Flunky It’s not enough that you drive her around, but sometimes she sends you out WITHOUT HER to run her errands. She asks you, in that ever so sweet voice of hers, to pick up her dry cleaning “since it’s on your way home.” She has to work late, so she wants to know if you’d be a dear and walk her precious dog for her. And you do it, because you figure that’s what a good boyfriend would do, right? Right. Problem is, you’re not her boyfriend, you’re her errand boy; and any hopes you had of becoming her boyfriend went out the window along with your dignity. She’s not going to date you because she doesn’t respect you. Some women don’t like a guy who does whatever she says or who she can walk all over. What you see as kindness, she may view as weakness. It’s sad but true. There’s nothing wrong with being a good friend, if that’s all you want to be. But if you want more, and she’s not giving it to you, despite all of your good intentions, then bounce…and let her hire an assistant. 3. You Are Her “Go-To” Date If you find that she only wants to go OUT – to the movies, a concert or to her favorite restaurant, chances are she just wants to get out of the house and you are her “go-to” date. Every time she calls, you’re always available…probably because you sit around waiting for your phone to ring. She knows this, and she also knows that you will do anything to be in her presence. If she’s always busy when you invite her to your crib or you’ve never seen the inside of her place, then she probably doesn’t want to be anywhere where something could jump off…and she’d have to turn you down. Just once or twice, be busy when she calls or tell her “no” to an outside date and see how she reacts. If she’s bent out of shape or stops calling, then you’ll know she’s probably not that into you. 4. You Pay For ALL Dates Not only are you her “go-to” date – you also PAY for ALL of the dates. Some women expect men to pay for all dates, and some men even agree with that. But you shouldn’t be going broke while you’re trying to figure if she actually even likes you. If you’ve got the means to stick it out until she magically falls in love with you, then rock on. But if you have to take out a small loan just to keep courting this woman, while she NEVER ever offers to pay for anything, then stop…now. See how long she wants to “date” you when you tell her that you forgot your wallet. 5. You Pay Her Bills It’s one thing to pay for dates, but it’s another thing to pay her rent. There’s nothing wrong with helping out a friend in need, or LOANING someone some money until they get on their feet. But unless you are her MAN, and you KNOW this, then there is no way you should be paying for anything that’s in her name. Men and women use each other all the time for different things, but you’re a straight up sucka if she hands you a utility bill and you actually pay it…regularly. And don’t try taking her to court when she drops you for some other fool and you’re out hundreds or thousands of dollars. She’ll claim it was a “gift” and you’ll never get your money back. Listen to what I’m telling you and save yourself from having to learn an expensive lesson on your own. 6. You’re Mr. Fix It You’ve let it be known that you’re pretty handy when it comes to fixing things, so she invites you over one Saturday afternoon to “help” her paint her house. You think it’ll earn you some cool points – and you’ll get to be INSIDE her place and you can seduce her while you wait for the paint to dry. WRONG! All she’s going to do is find a way to be busy “doing something else” while you paint, and when you’re done, she’ll suddenly need a ride to Home Depot to pick up some things for the next project you’ll be working on. So you drive her there (See #1) and pay for all the materials (See #5) and then go back to her place to install her new cabinets, hang some shelves and fix her leaky faucet. She doesn’t even offer to feed you (See #4). She rushes you out of her house when the work is done because she’s “tired” (has a date with someone else) so you leave, hoping for another chance to get closer to her bedroom. You, my friend, have been had. Next time, tell her to hire a contractor and keep it moving. 7. You’re Her Confidante So by now, you realize that you’re in the” friend zone”, but you don’t care. You think you still have a chance to woo her, so you continue to be her shoulder to cry on hoping that one day she’ll come to her senses and realize what a wonderful, caring, compassionate man you are. So you endure endless hours of her late night calls crying to you about the jerk who broke her heart (again). You encourage her complaints about all the no- good men out there and remind her that if she were your woman, you’d never hurt her and treat her like the queen that she is. Little do you know, she’s a glutton for punishment, only likes “bad boys” and thinks nice guys like you are weak and pathetic. Dude, run…or else she’ll just continue to use you up and walk all over you. You’re wasting your time if you think she’ll change her mind about you – and if she finally ever does, it’ll be too late…because you will have found a woman who appreciates you. 8. You’re Her s*x Toy Now, this might not be a problem for most men out there, but if you are genuinely interested in having a real relationship, getting married and having kids one day, then you might want to find a woman who wants you for more than s*x. Believe it or not, there are women out there, like men, who have jump-offs who they will never be seen out in public with. The s*x is earth shattering, but she doesn’t want a relationship, OR, she doesn’t want a relationship with YOU. Maybe you’re too short, don’t have a job, have multiple children with multiple women, have some teeth missing…who knows. Either way, she doesn’t want her girlfriends to know about you, so you become her dirty little secret and she calls you after midnight to come by and crack her back. Now, again…some, if not most, men would be fine with this arrangement. But if you’ve somehow caught feelings for her, then it’s best you leave now before your heart gets broken into a million little pieces once she finds a guy she can actually be seen in daylight with. |
A lot has been written about the virtues of the first generation of Northern Nigeria’s political leaders especially the likes of the Late Sardauna of Sokoto, the Late Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, the Late Alhaji Muhammadu Ribadu, the Late Mallam Aminu Kano etc. Nonetheless, it will be note worthy to point out, with no fear of contradiction, that the period in which they – especially the Sardauna at the regional level and Sir Balewa at the federal level – led, can be regarded as the golden age of Northern Nigeria’s political glory. These was the period when Northerners in politics were revered by their peers and their opinions highly regarded even if not agreed to by contemporaries because they were totally patriotic and passionate to their causes. During this golden age, other regions will preferentially rather “do business” with the North politically, even if they disagree with it, than do business with other regions. The leaders from the North during this period, are respectable and, integrity is an honor they live by.They were incorruptible and had the best interests of their constituencies at heart. Politics for them is not a personal wealth-making endeavor, as it is the case with most of the later generation of leaders of Northern Nigerian extraction, but a call to leadership and service. The guiding principle of these leaders’ are: Duty, Honor, and Country, Regrettably, these same statements could not be made without exception about the subsequent generation of leaders of Northern Nigerian extraction both at regional and state levels. To varying degrees, the progress that the first generation of Northern Nigerian leaders achieved for the region and the nation at large were allowed to waste and in most cases reversed, Zainab Usman-2012, in her article titled, Northern Nigeria: The Disconnect Between Our Leaders and the Rest of Us, accused the present generation of leaders of progressively disconnecting themselves from the ordinary people through misplaced priorities. According to her, “The summaries of various communiqués of meetings and fora involving northern political leaders (mainly the Northern Governors Forum) and most northern elders (mostly former public office holders) of recent, on the North’s numerous problems are baffling and frustrating as it is apparent the agenda of these meetings typically have little to do with the region’s gargantuan economic, socio-political and security challenges. Neither do the final recommendations. “The themes of these meetings usually revolve around increased revenue allocation to northern states from the Federal Government, lamentations over existing conspiracies to “marginalize” and “destroy” the North; emphasis on the North’s “turn” to produce the next president in 2015; hollow, rhetorical lamentations on the decline of the northern economy and the need to revive agriculture, countering the Boko Haram insurgency and occasionally, a passing reference is made on the need for good governance, and in the end, these ills are ascribed to bad leadership and that’s about it. These meetings typically produce virtually no solid, detailed, implementable blue prints on how to methodically, systematically and effectively address the North’s well-documented problems. “As the communiqués and press briefings for these meetings become public, one’s hopes of tangible solutions are further dashed by the crushing realisation that these leaders are running round in vicious circles. At best, they gloss over the most critical problems, and at worst, their recommendations have practically no bearing on these problems.” Usman also classified the problems bedevilling the North into four broad distinct but interrelated categories: the steady economic decline of the region over several decades, the breakdown of social cohesion, the insecurity especially the Boko Haram insurgency and the gradual decline of the North’s political influence at the centre. She, however, opined that disturbing fact is that the priorities of the northern Governors and many of the northern elders, are skewed towards the North’s access to political power and how to bring back the Presidency to the North come 2015 while the more important economic, social and security challenges are of secondary importance to them. Besides, Usman said Thomas Friedman of the New York Times, writing in June 2012, identified two components of the global leadership deficit prevalent in many countries - generational and technological. She opined that the Northern Nigeria leadership shares in this deficit. She opined that “When this is applied to the situation in northern Nigeria, it becomes apparent that the disconnect between the leaders and the led has much to do with the little generational change amongst those responsible for aggregating and articulating the North’s aspirations, with mostly the same people who have been in the thick of things since some of us were in diapers, whom we’ve read about in social studies textbooks in primary and secondary school, still dexterously recycling themselves continuously back in power – as governors, ministers, legislators, permanent secretaries, board members of parastatals – still calling the shots today.” The incredibly persistent longevity of many die-hard power-brokers in northern Nigeria, Usman observed, has ensured that only a few neophytes have been genuinely groomed as successors. This situation of course, she added, is connected to the technological dimension of this leadership deficit which beyond the use of modern technology in governance, refers to the stale, archaic and retrogressive approach to leadership as a consequence of this generational gap, with little input of fresh ideas and approaches to governance. “Therefore, the same top-down, gerontocratic and quasi-feudal approaches to leadership of decades past is very much the norm in the North today, increasingly incapable of addressing present-day 21st century challenges,” she further said. Who then leads Northern Nigeria? |
