CareerRe: University Degree Only For Gaining Self Confidence by tollu: 11:00pm On Dec 15, 2010
The argument of the OP is based on the assumption that being a university graduate gives you some kind of rep. Sorry to burst your bubble but that is no longer true. If you choose to look at it that way, what is the big deal in possessing something every and anybody holds?

When was the last time you visited an NYSC orientation camp? Imagine that crowd; now multiply it by all the states in the federation. That's a whole lot right?
Now multiply it by three (that's the number of batches these days - some batches even have two streams!)

How anybody can say a university degree is just for gaining self confidence beats me. Even as watered down and bastardised the Nigerian tertiary institution is, it still counts for something if you choose to improve yourself. The value of education cannot be overemphasized.

CareerRe: U.R.P As A Course. good or bad? by tollu: 8:41pm On Dec 09, 2010
One can be self employed, IF that's where you are led but then you can't knock being in paid employment. It's all about what you want to be, what you see yourself doing.

If you are not looking towards anything professional i.e (Law, Medicine etc) , I think one should hav an outlook that it's just a first degree, you can always build on that. In that vein, there's nothing wrong with the URP that u've been offered. If you believe that Quantity surveying would serve your purposes better (though I don't see how). Perhaps, you should go for that. As long as U don't have to waste 1 more year.

URP = Urban & Regional Planning yeah?

Jibson999:
thanks for d reply.
but pls can u state why i have to come out wit 2.1
The class of degree issue has been overflogged already and The sleek probably suggested you graduate with 2.1 minimum so you have more opportunities (Perceived) and a good start in the job market in the job market.

GMAT is not that bad oh if you have the right materials and tutoring. Anyways the schools you chose are good and LSE is top notch. So I guess you are on track then.

Since you have a 2:1 then I dont think you should apply to just Memorial, you can explore other options you might even get a scholarship. I took out time to visit all universities and colleges in Canada this weekend.

I think Toronto(GMAT & GRE required), York, Mcgill, Royal Roads University, University of Regina all do MHRM

Then some of the schools have masters in management that you have to pick a specialization, concerntration or field which HRM is inclusive:
Wilfred Laurier, University of Lethbridge, University of Sherbrooke.

The colleges also offer HRM too.

About the 1 year thingy, that u have to check on your own cos I think some full time progs are one year then part time 2 years. Me sef this PGD before masters becos of 2:2 is long sturvs, I would have preferred direct masters but hopefully Memorial will determine that.

Best of luck
Wow babes, U sound like a great person to have on a team.
Been really fraustrated about this masters thing of recent and then u came along with all your questions lol.
I might still write the GMAT depending on how 'smart' I feel in a few weeks. MUN does sound like a good place with your 2.2 have you completed your applications?

Babes, I think Memorial University is the best for an MBA oh with a 2:2 since its accredited and its ranking is not bad too. Sorry you might not even have a 2:2, what is your profile so I can suggest some MBA programs and info for u.
Mini Profile
2.1
3 yrs work experience (NYSC Inclusive)
Don't wanna write GMAT

Thanks Cuddlemii, I'm actually running away from writing GMAT and 2 years at a stretch seems rather too long to stay abroad. Looking at MUN for MER and London School of Economics Msc HRM. Applications still in progress

@lanresz, rare & laajman

How is an MBA at Vancouver Island University. Do employers go there too. They dont require GMAT and there is an option of me doing a PGD before the program and getting a dual masters degree in MBA/International business after.

I just want a good school & a good job after, is that too much to wish for, lol
The whole VIU thing dual degree deal sounds fantastic BUT on 4icu.org the ranking in rather poor, 2000 and sth!!! Oh well, since you've resigned to the one top and one bottom school thing, this should be your bottom ooo. Please any other thing you discover kindly pass on the gist wink

Pah! Ur university degree is a kobo a dozen and so not enough to seperate you from the rest of the crowd.

Obviously you don't use any of the 'artisans'. Then you would respect them when they bill you (1).
Your comments are based on the ignorant perceptions that lazy Nigerians (who are unfortunately in the majority) keep spreading around to discourage people from working hard for their daily bread. Nobody said don't go to school, but just know that you have to work hard to get anything (2) . That's the way it works every where in the world. Why would you think Nigeria is different?
@ Bolded (1)
Word! Artisans who know what they are on about make a heapload of money and when it is infused with that extra thingy you get when you hav been within the four walls of a higher institution - - - then, there's no stopping you.

@ Bolded (2)
Not necessarily hard but smart. I see some of these young guys especilly those in the diesel supply thing who do not leave their houses often times and still do very well for themselves. One thing every business needs - Contacts or customers if you will.

A little motivation for u,I graduated from school at the age of 21,I stayed home waiting for service for 1yr,applying for jobs on every website.I'm a Petroleum Engr, then during my service year,I decided to abandon service, take good use of the opportunities around me.I opened my own company with 2 people. We started a construction and management company.I was in charge of business development/public relations, today my experience has grown so much that big companys now want to employ me.I have turned down a lot of offers, and would only work in another corporation if its Total or Shell.Else as I would stick to my company.
This is impressive. All the best

lonelydude:
You all make this issue sound too straightforward but I'll like to let you guys know that the fact that some make it in business doesn't mean some others will.
I used to belong to your school of thought but these days, my thinking has changed. I used to say to myself that not everyone is entrepreneurial (Which is true) but then some of us can still find other things to do.
I’m not so qualified to dish out advice on this kind of issue just yet but then, this girl is getting there.
When I was much younger, I used to see myself as that power suit wearing, briefcase toting executive (I still do) but times are not so encouraging. I don try to force myself in sotay . . .The thing tire person. So currently, I’m no longer applying for jobs. Applications for an MBA sept. 2011 in progress and the koko of all the information is that on my free days I learn how to sew. This is something I have a slight interest in and hope would provide some sort in income whenever I make the relocation. At least pending the time I get to live my MAIN dream.

So, you will do well to modify, not necessarily change, your thinking. Cheers mate
