koseepaaro: OP, before you conclude that you need to replace your laptop screen, I'll advise you to carry out one thing. And the thing I want you to do is that you should get a flat screen monitor to confirm whether all will be okay after you change the screen of your laptop. If you check all the ports on your laptop, you should see VGA port among them. Please, connect any flat screen monitor to that VGA port (on your laptop) and power on the flat screen monitor and then your laptop that's showing white screen. Note: if nothing still shows on that flat screen monitor, just hold down 'Fn' key (close to 'ctrl key' and then press 'F4' key on your laptop keyboard until you see something display on the flat screen monitor that you connected to the laptop. Good luck to you.
drhopeful: Second offer from University of Virginia. Fully funded with a research fellowship + RAship. Rather late because I already accepted Penn State after waiting on Virginia for soooooo long. Spoke with my super nice POI from Virginia and he really wants to work with me and putting me in a big fix. Lol. Oh! And I already have my I-20 from Penn and paid SEVIS. Ah well... I don't know.
Scholastica16, how far for your end?
Congrats, lucky you! This is the kind of fix many of us here wish to have.
enshi: Some days ago i sought help concerning my gf who is a Social media freak.. Especially with posting slaying pics.
We actually got over the misunderstanding and tried to move on but it was after then that the unthinkable happened.. . She needed to move to a new apartment and therefore wanted me to suport her in raising some money...
She is aware i have some money in my account which was meant for something by next month but surprisingly she asked Me to help her from the money..
I tried giving her reasons why i shouldnt risk taking out money from the account but she refused to understand..
Recall that we stay in differnt states?? So i traveled to her state so as to explain things face to face but to my surprise she refused to see me though she earlier warned me not to try coming cos she would intentionally avoid seeing me but i took the risk just to see how mean she could get..
After waiting for hours and she didnt show up, i returned back to my state and yet i tried to fix things but this time she said things will go her way, and she mated out some rules to me...
These rules are evidently pointing out that she wants to start touring the state with her friends.. And believe me she will surely cheat..
We fell out on phone that sunday night and since then i have blocked her on my fb, whatsapp, and even deleted her number. She noticed it and sent me a text telling me that i was mean and heartless..
Since sunday she has been calling me but cos her number is barred on true caller i only see it as missed calls..
I really dont know if she wants us to make up or she is calling for the money..
The worst is we had an oath with the bible to stay fidel with each other and sincerely i think she had kept to the oath until now and like wise have i...
Pls what do i do cos i am not ready to touch the money meant for something serious and i cant continue with her based on the rules she gave then lastly we are on oath..
I am not surprised no one has mentioned it until now. I saw the same word used in the suit filed at the court here in Nigeria and no one even bothered to correct it, we have too many educated illiterates in this country. What else do you expect from a fake 3rd class degree holder?
Big kudos to those who constantly via this thread, sew into our lives. (pun intended) I am equally honored to add my little quota to the existing plethora of information on this thread.
The GRE isn't a test of intelligence (as they say at the beginning of most texts), it is a test of how well you can take the GRE (Cliche right?).
I started preparation about three months ago; getting acquainted with the structure of the exam, reading the tales of those who performed excellently and those who didn't. I also got the necessary materials suggested; magoosh GRE flashcards app and Memrise app; Even though it might seem a daunting challenge to study and remember 1000 new words in a matter of months, these apps ease you into it. IF you assiduously study a meagre 20 words per day(2 words an hour), you would consummate the GRE vocabs in 50 days. Also it helps that these apps are intertwined, so if you exhaust the magoosh word list (which you should), going to another app (say memrise) would be more or less revision. For those who have ample time to prepare, you can also take time to go through word power made easy by norman lewis; it is a thorough book that helps you really understand etymology and co. Another wonderful app is Ready4GRE; this not only has vocab flash cards, it simulates the real GRE syllabus and walks you through vital topics and concepts which are pertinent to your learning. I also combed through a lot of Sentence Equivalence and Text Completion Questions on various platforms; Manhattan 5lb, magoosh videos, barrons 6 tests, and princeton 1014 questions. I learned new words in the process and further got acquainted with the strategies and formats to tackle questions; the most efficacious being the Process of Elimination (IMO). For the Reading Comprehension; one key to acing this section is a cultivated reading habit. This can be improved by dedicating time to surfing academia texts, aldaily, nytimes, aeon, and the likes- ameliorating reading speed in the process.
For the Quantitative section, this also requires practice. IMO, the quantitative comparison is perhaps the most important; as this incorporates all other concepts (Geometry, Combinatorics, algebra etc). It also makes up 16/40 questions of the test, and is the only section that would strike most as new. I read the books by manhattan on the various topics, revising old & forgotten concepts. I then went on to solve most of the questions in the 5lb pack. After doing this, I still had a major problem with certain topics such as combinatorics and probability (we all do ) and I went on to nova GRE bible; they had over 100 questions on each topic. I watched magoosh videos too; learning short cuts and more basic concepts. The Ready4GRE app also had a myriad of really tough questions that was a similitude of the actual exam.
I practiced the Analytical writing section with each practice test; so I had a rigid format, and I was a becoming a virtuoso in the art of using linking words and GRE vocabs. I also went through the question pool during leisure; taking time out to generate at least three points for each question.
The test day was overwhelming! I had QVQVQ; my dream format, and I proceeded to tackling the question. I cannot overemphasize the effect of adequate practice. I had almost no problem with pacing, even though I saw a few TOUGH traps disguised as questions. I was not so lucky with the verbal section. The Devil himself assisted ETS in setting the questions. Even the TC and SE I though I was good at, they proved to be too hot to handle. I barely had time to finish my last RC set and I had to make lucky guesses. I then had my break; quickly devouring my meal and from my conversation with other test takers, ETS was just in a bad mood that day. The second quant was quite tougher as expected, and I did my best and readily moved on to the verbal section; which seemed relatively easier, same as the last Quant. I reported scores; 163Q, 157V. Sent scores to four schools (major key). And I left feeling elated.
I can't but appreciate the likes of Sirriddy, Time2Smile, topiipii, OGreene, fredoricko, iekene, scholastica16, happyday, Alan (I cant spell that your long german name ) et al. for taking time out to give encouragement, tips and advice. God bless you guys real Good!
Pardon my verbose epistle and malapropist use of recondite and esoteric words. I barely saw 20 words on the exam; and I dont know what to do with the rest of the words in my head. tescoman90, ezeeche, temmitarts, et al. You are next folks! #Selah
Congrats Rex, wish you all the best in your applications.
Mehn! This is massive! Itzzz really genetically fingered. Any1 seen the seedless watermelon?
I don't think it is, Brahma chicken has been in existence before genetic modification existed and they're a naturally large specie having been bred from asian chickens primarily for meat. This one is just unusually large.
DozieInc: No matter how big it is, native fowl go still beat am.
The specie is actually quite peaceful based on comments from owners online, but which kain native fowl go wan try this one? abi you no watch the video?
I first saw this video on Facebook this morning and was quite surprised at the size of this massive chicken; it turns out that the video is trending all over the internet. I wonder why we don't have this specie in Nigeria yet, poultry farmers over to you.
I hope this meets you well. I was recently accepted into the department of X and Y at your institution for a Master's program. Yours was at the top of my list so you can understand my excitement on receiving the email.
I am using this opportunity to express my interest in securing a position in the department as a research or a teaching assistant. Apart from the tuition waiver and maybe stipend that the position will assure me of, I am vying for it because I believe it falls within my long term academic ambition to push for a doctoral position in your institution at the conclusion of the masters program and I am convinced that participating in an assistantship will help nuture me into further graduate study.
Let me chime in at this point to state that I am extemely resourceful; time conscious; diligent and above all disciplined enough to more than contribute my own fair share to the success of my program, the department and the University of X or Y as a whole. In fact, when you meet me in person you would agree.
Thank you for taking your time to read this. I will be expecting a response from you Sir/Ma.
Regards,
Topiipii/Andradaeze
You have nothing to lose. They already gave you the admission they cannot rescind it at this point. Besides, they know graduate school is expensive. You can even tell them FX issues in Nigeria will forestall your academic dreams. But waiting by and by will do nothing as they would assume you are OBO.
You're far too kind, I wish to be like you when I grow up in the future.

2. I woke up to hear knocking on glass. At first, I thought it was the window until I heard it come from the mirror again.
3. The last thing I saw was my alarm clock flashing 12:07 before she pushed her long rotting nails through my chest, her other hand muffling my screams. I sat bolt upright, relieved it was only a dream, but as I saw my alarm clock read 12:06, I heard my closet door creak open.
4. In all of the time that I've lived alone in this house, I swear to God I've closed more doors than I've opened.
5. A girl heard her mom yell her name from downstairs, so she got up & started to head down. As she got to the stairs, her mom pulled her into her room & said "I heard that, too."
6. My wife woke me up last night to tell me there was an intruder in our house. She was murdered by an intruder 2 years ago.
7. I always thought my cat had a staring problem. she always seemed fixated on my face. Until one day, when I realized that she was always looking just behind me.

Ndawe: Oh wow. I'll check and do so asap.Thank you. Did you also apply to Tennessee Tech and for what program?
MS Electrical Engineering
Ndawe: I sent an email yesterday inquiring about the need to make a separate application for an assistantship position in Tennessee Tech, and she was quick to respond as follows: "Thank you for your inquiry about the EVS PhD assistantships. I believe you have been recommended for an assistantship, but no decisions will be made until the EVS PhD Graduate Review Committee meet on March 23rd. We should have their recommendations by March 24th. We are also waiting on possible State Legislature funds to become available". Basically, by month end, there should be an update regarding that. Now I wouldn't know if this is peculiar to the department I'm applying to or it cuts across board. Did you get a response yet?
I have to apply based on the reply I got, the person that replied me even said it might be up to July before decisions are announced as usually get their funds late. It might be peculiar to my department though since the person I mailed works in the ECE department.
Note: For those with admission offers who are seeking funding, I'd advise you check with your department/graduate admissions if you need to apply for TA/RA. I was told I'd need to do so by Colorado State and on checking Tennessee Tech's website, I noticed I'd also need to apply as well (the deadline for ECE Fall 2017 is March 15). I intend to mail the department to confirm this. cc Ndawe
Yea, I got Rochester last year but their tuition was pretty high and d scholarship I got from them was just only 35% of d fees. Perhaps, I wasn't really serious with d whole thing then .....na why I no comot. And d country isn't getting better, I must comot this time oo
Why na? Who go come remain if all of una run comot?
Scholastica16: Master. Thanks o. Wetin remain na for you to announce the funding decision which I know will be grand. I wonder why you were evading the PhD route?
No mind me jare, I just think the lack of research experience will not count in my favour.
So I just received a congratulatory email from Tennessee Tech and they said to expect the official admission/offer letter via email within 5 days. I pray the offer is juicy.
Scholastica16: University of New Mexico. Saw 2 attachments and thought one was my acceptance and the other my "funding" letter so I hurriedly opened it. You can imagine my shock when I saw "I regret" somewhere. I could have reported it but I came online and saw you celebrating PennState, so I went back to silently moan.
I guess it is -2/8 now for me.
Keep hope alive, I'm sure you'll smile at the end.
jaybiz007: I applied for a PhD. My department contacted me weeks ago telling me that I was recommended for admission into their MS program instead. They were polite enough to request that I should change to ms using the link they sent to me. Mind if we hook up via email for seamless cross-fertilzation of opinion pertaining to colostate?
Scholastica16: I am surprised you guys are surprised. She had said it before pages back. That's why I was confident she would get atleast 2 of her top schools. It is not just about the 4/4 but that she got it from the UK which schools in the US can vouch for as against Local degrees.
I remember the 4.3/5 and also knew she got a distinction, but did not know the GPA. In fact, I have to start putting Aunty in front of her name whenever I want to address her.
drhopeful: Undergrad course and GPA: Petroleum Engineering, 4.3/5 MSc GPA: Materials Engineering, 4/4 GRE (Verbal and Quant scores): 157V, 164Q, 4AW TOEFL scores: 107 Work Experience: 8 years Papers Published: Nil Date of application and decision date: Nov 10, 2016 / Feb 27, 2017
I would also like to mention that I had no contact whatsoever with anyone from the school. Not even for an interview. So you can imagine the shock.
